Tom Ince hits his third goal of pre-season as Huddersfield Town lose in Germany, while a Stefano Okaka strike is enough for Watford to seal their first victory of the summer.

Here are Tuesday’s notes.

SV Sandhausen 3 Huddersfield Town 2

Summer recruit Tom Ince scored for the third consecutive match as Huddersfield slumped to a 3-2 defeat against their Bundesliga 2 opponents.

The midfielder, currently one of only three Terriers players enjoying more than 2% Fantasy Premier League ownership, curled home from the edge of the area after coming on at half-time.

Pre-season goalscoring exploits always need to be taken with a generous measure of salt – Burnley’s Andre Gray (9 goals) being a prime example last summer – but Ince’s form is welcome for those of us looking for an asset to exploit Huddersfield’s kindly start to the season (pal, NEW, SOT, wham, LEI, bur).

Elsewhere, club record signing, Benin forward Steve Mounie, was also on the scoresheet – his second goal in as many matches since his move from Montpellier.

Both goals were set up by Rajiv van La Parra.

The match was rather less memorable for defender Martin Cranie, who was brought on after 54 minutes and promptly had a hand in two of the German side’s goals, including the concession of the penalty that proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Town coach David Wagner again stuck to his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation and made a raft of changes at both half-time and on the hour-mark.

But a number of players remain unavailable to him. Tommy Smith (foot), Nahki Wells (ankle), Jon Gorenc Stankovic (knee) and Michael Hefele (Achilles) are injured, while Aaron Mooy is still on extended leave following Australia’s participation in the Confederations Cup. Meanwhile, Scott Malone suffered a knock and was forced off on 40 minutes.

Huddersfield Town XI: Lossl (Coleman 46); Scannell (J Williams 46), Jorgensen (Edmonds-Green 75), Schindler (Cranie 46), Malone (Lowe 41); Hogg (van La Parra 60), Whitehead (D Williams 60); Kachunga (Billing 60), Palmer (Lolley 46), Quaner (Ince 46); Depoitre (Mounie 60).

Viktoria Plzen 0 Watford 1

A Stefano Okaka goal 10 minutes from time handed Watford their first victory of pre-season.

The striker, currently the Hornets’ only fit first team forward, scored from close range having been set up new signing Will Hughes.

The former Derby County midfielder had been handed 20 minutes by coach Marco Silva to make a good first impression, and he did just that.

Silva again employed a 4-2-3-1 formation in a match in which neither goalkeeper was overly busy, but right-back Brice Dja Djédjé at least caught the eye, coming on at half-time and impressing in an unfamiliar role on the left flank.

Etienne Capoue was again deployed as part of the attacking midfield three behind the striker, with Ben Watson and Abdoulaye Doucouré occupying the roles in the double pivot.

Watford XI: Gomes (Pantilimon 60); Janmaat, Prödl, Kabasele, Holebas (Dja Djédjé 46); Watson, Doucouré; Berghuis (Amrabat 46), Capoue (Hughes 68), Success (Sinclair 68); Okaka.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Pre-season stock take

What lessons have we learned so far from the small amount of pre-season games that have taken place?

Here’s a few to get the ball rolling

Pogba – he’s still being fielded in a deep lying role. Even if a DM is recruited will his attacks continue to be muted? Could he be the assister of the assister? The early warning signs are there.

Mkhitaryan - is he nailed? If so he is looking a prime candidate to being Lukaku’s assister in chief.

Tom Ince- is he a Boselli or a Michu? The Huddersfield midfielder has scored three goals in as many pre season matches so far. Could he be a bargain at 6.0?

Knockaert – If his injury proves serious and keeps him out, could Gross or indeed Suttner become Brighton’s set piece-meisters?

Sanchez- unsettled and if he stays at Arsenal he will have missed early pre season training. Could this mean he starts sluggishly and Lacazette becomes the best option among the Gunners’ premium assets?

What have you learned from pre season so far?

And what are the outstanding issues you hope it will resolve?

They are leaking good players and not recruiting - it is a worry.

Arnie at West Ham is interesting. Could see an upturn in fortunes there.

Everyone else seems to be be getting better.

Just had a look at Stoke's current frontline. It may well be the worst I've ever seen of a side that is not a promoted team.

it's forcing my hand in getting Rooney for week 1 captaincy. I don't particularly rate Hughes either.

2nd point is Ben Watson at Watford. Playing and on set pieces, but not in the FPL player lists!

Klopp said yesterday that we should expect rotation - early signs are that around CL in partic the key players will be rotated.

Mane will obviously play most games if fit - but would be annoying if he missed a plum easy home tie.

I'm a big fan of Knockaert and currently got him in. May look at Ince or Kachunga as a replacement if injury proves serious.

Point on Sanchez, I instinctively started building my team around him but downgrading him to Ramsey has enabled strength all over the park.

Re : Pogba and Mkhi. I'd steer clear of both personally.

Fit and in his best form, Sanchez is a major captaincy option.

I'm preparing teams with and without him and will decide nearer to the GW1 deadline which one to start with.

Nothing concrete yet. As teams are not playing Their main team at the moment.

Main issue is waiting for a nailed On 4.0 Def and a 4.5 Mid.

Also weighting that third Fwd slot. Defoe or a 6.5 type.

      I'm looking at Redmond now.

Have swapped Sane and Pogba for KDB!!! and Redmond - same price.

If Redmond can show a sign he'll start and prosper I'll swerve the seemingly deep lying Pogba and luxuriate in KDB's greatness.

We were, but anyone looking into the stats would see that this was as a result of a few heavy defeats towards the end of the season, when playoff place was secure, and also intermittently when key players were out.

sanchez could go either way. he might be on a misson at the start of the season, he's scored big against leicester and stoke before as well. He's in my team at present - can't see him sulking and missing out, if anything it makes him more selfish in front of goal.

        Currently Kane, Lukaku and Defoe.

I have KDB in midfield and may still do some kind of swap with jim and Defoe to perhaps Aguero and Stanislas. Leaves midfield and balance a little weak though. I like the look of Defoe too.

Sanchez is my main issue here and seems to be resolving along the lines of Jonty's summary. I do not recall starting a season without him, nor leaving him out of my squad for more than a few weeks, but this year is different. He is too expensive, too unsettled and unless pre-season convinces me otherwise, he will not be worthy at this price so he is the one I am keenly following... As for Ince, I doubt any Huddersfield player can be a bargain at 6.0 but, if not a bargain, he could be a decent choice, though I would be inclined to think that when it comes to top flight real games, he is bound to deliver less.

Ah. For me i think last season suggests you will score heavily. Your conversion was a blip, but your shot count wasn't. If it gets back up to the previous average shot conversion you'll score plenty

I agree sort of. But it's understandable why last season would raise concerns for many.

                Lukaku should change a lot

Also, statistically, the probability of conversion rate returning to the norm based on it being lower last season is nonsense

Actually, it's really not. Using data for the last two seasons, I ran a simple linear regression of chance conversion rate from one season to the next and found that the two had a wholly negligible correlation coefficient (r^2=0.0022). It looked as if the previous season's chance conversion rate had no bearing on the next. Given that we know chance conversion rates over the past several years follow a normal distribution, severe outliers (1+ standard deviation from the mean) like United are absolutely likely to regress the following year. I'd expect their CC rate to be somewhere in the 10-12% cluster that most sides fall into last year. Based on the number of chances created last year, that would have resulted in approximately 10 more goals over the course of the year (a 9% increase).

I can get numbers for more seasons if you like.

Below 5.0 means 4.5. And you say 'attacker' specifically. All of the 4.5 attackers are priced thus because they are not going to get a game, even for terrible teams, and you say that none isn't an option?

Ayew should get some time for Swansea but out wide.

Crouch, Mitrovic and Calvert-Lewin will play a bit. Calvert-Lewin could be exciting if he does.

Bakakyoko injured till September so fabs will play. Haz injured till September so Willian will play. If he does well he could oust Pedro place when hazard comes back. Most likely rudiger will play due to Moses being suspended, and azpi going to wing back, but I think Chelsea will sign a right back/right wing back who will start instead.

Right guys, tried to mix it up a bit but still think it offers a lot of potential. Would love to know your thoughts.

    Foster /Elliot

    Tripper, Valencia, Cedric/ lascelles, Rangel

    Ali, kdb, redmond, rlc, wijnaldum

    Lakaku, lacazette/ Gayle

Valencia in the fwd postion could be a differential?

Lascelles will get game time and I think Newcastle will do well with (mid table) with Rafa.

Wijnaldum despite playing further back seems to get the point every season and covers Liverpool for a good price to points.

Gayle again is scoring well pre season and last.

    Thanks for the thoughts

    1. Dasher0303

Why would Valencia be in the forward position?? Unless they sign a rb, he will definitely play rb.

Lascelles is a good option and nailed.

Wijnaldum will get rotated heavily and competes with Lallana for a place in the team, as Hendo and cout are in the other two places in midfield.

Gayle didn't do well on premier league, better to watch and wait.

In my dream last night Arsenal scored 5 in the opening game of the season. Ozil and Sanchez with one apiece, and Ramsey with a hattrick.

      Only in your dream lol.

Ramsey may score 3 in a season if lucky
