Next up in our summer series of members’ articles, offering in-depth team-by-team analysis are Southampton. A side that carry extra significance ahead of the new campaign given their exceptionally kind early fixtures.

To get underway, we’ll analyse performance at a team level and attempt to spot trends or improvements. We then delve into the player data, analysing the key individuals as we scour for potential targets ahead of next month’s Gameweek 1 deadline.

In addition, we’ll also focus on any specific periods of interest brought about by tactical changes or breakout Fantasy performances – in this case we’ll focus on the Saints’ home/away displays, investigating a trend that saw them score just 17 goals in front of their own supporters.

Southampton finished in sixth spot under Ronald Koeman back in 2015/16 – a total of 63 points was just three points behind Manchester City in fourth. But the Dutchman’s decision to move to Everton proved detrimental to their prospects, with replacement Claude Puel struggling to maintain those standards.

Despite claiming eight place, Southampton bagged just 46 points and found the net on 41 occasions – a tally that bettered only the bottom five and well behind the 59 strikes under Koeman.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

3rd (and last) time lucky. I'm guessing you all love it, right?

Good day to you all, it's the first time I've done this but would welcome your honest feedback on this lot for GW1:

    Foster
    Cedric, - Alonso, - Milner, - Trippier
Willian, - De Bruyne, - Alli
    Lukaku, - Firmino, - Defoe

    Subs: Elliot, Loftus-Cheek, Rangel, Carroll

There's no Arsenal but that's just how I like it

Can't see an Arsenal attacker I like personally. Sanchez I would avoid until the transfer window shuts, Lacazette I think will take time to adapt and hasn't been great in pre-season so far. Maybe Ramsey but he plays quite deep and there are better options in his price range.

I like it actually. Only 1 heavy hitter up top could screw you though, but Firmino & Defoe can easily become a heavy hitter and a form budget striker (JRod, Austin)

I haven't posted one for a while, but i like this a lot:

    Foster, Myhill
    Bailley, Tripp, Yoshi, Hegazi, Lowton
    KDB, Alli, Willian (Carroll, Romeu)
    Lukaku, Jesus, Firmino

    Nice enough?

Nice enough but 2 of them defenders could easily be non-playing, and you'll be relying on TC as 4th mid

By the logic on this site, that's a good thing. Makes it easier to pick the sub that will score the most and that's save frustration.

        Yosh and Hega?

Thought i might try out a bit of power playing with lots of big attackers paid for by going 4 at the back.

      • 11 Years

Good apart from defence - don't think Hegazi is a starter and Lowton's position now looks under threat following Bardsley aquisition. I'm torn on Trippier - depends if Spurs sign another RB and if so, whether that player will be good enough to pose a rotation risk.

    Irritatingly bottomed. RMT?
IF Austin appears to be nailed up top:

    Alli Salah Sane Zaha (4.5)
    Lukaku Jesus Austin

As a Newcastle fan, Elliot is nailed on to be number one ahead of Darlow.

I don't like the Mawson & Shelvey picks. I'd flog Prodl for a 4.0 bench fodder and upgrade one of those two.

Not sure of shelvey but the newcastle fans spoke very highly of him after last year. I like the Mawso pick. Goal threat and swansea improved defensivey last year once clement took over. Cedric isnt back in pre season so you should monitor. Good team

Agree Mawson has goal threat. I guess with Mee and Prodl on the bench there's the option to rotate.

Still, there's better options at 5.0 for me: Dawson, Cedric, Daniels, Cook..

Are many going for Fabregas? Did very well for only playing 1300 minutes. 15 assists is ridiculous for that playing time. He has started all pre season games. Worth a punt pareticularly if wildcarding early.

I was also looking at chadli. Same price as Philips and has similar statistics last season but got more goals. Got alot of goals a few years back for spurs. I know West Brom are not spurs but they do have great fixtures. He was also on pens last year

How likely is it the Coutinho and Sanchez are leaving?

I find it hard to keep up with rumours, they got any foundation?

Both too risky IMO as possibly pissed at not getting moves. Especially Sanchez.

Sanchez more likely. I don't know obviously but Coutinho doesn't seem unhappy at Liverpool and given Liverpool will say 'not for sale' it would probably require Coutinho to go on strike and force the move himself. If Arsenal bring in a replacement I can see Sanchez going late in the window.

Thoughts on this bunch? Not sure about Coutinho any more, doesn't seem committed to Liverpool after apparently 'agreeing personal terms' with Barcelona. Thinking maybe Mkhitaryan instead, had him in and out so far.

      Gomes // Hart

      Bailly // Yoshida // Dawson // Naughton // Mee

      KdB // Coutinho // Tadic // Ritchie // Ince

      Kane // Lukaku // Quaner

You may cry, but I started with a 4.5 striker last year (Diomande) and had a great season. Granted, Quaner is less likely to start but I'm planning an early wildcard anyway so does it really matter? Worse that happens is he drops a couple of mil.

Point taken, I know it's probably just rumours but I don't feel he's 100% committed and despite Klopp insisting he'll stay, you can't deny that he fancies the Barca move?

Was great on loan at Colchester a few years ago. Good finish on him, very direct player. Could be a bargain at 5.5m and an alternative to Ritchie.

I would switch out Phillips for one of Ince/Ritchie/Knockaert, and I'd consider possibly downgrading KDB to Sane and downgrading Mee to a 4.0 defender so you can upgrade Jesus to Kane
