Our series of summer members’ articles continues this afternoon as we assess what’s on offer at the managerial merry-go-round that is Watford.

To begin with, we analyse the Hornets’ performances on a team level, checking out last season’s data in order to spot trends and areas of improvement. Following that, we take a look at the players to pinpoint their key individuals.

For this article, we also focus on new manager Marco Silva’s impact on his former club Hull City after an impressive stint at the KCOM Stadidum during the second half of 2016/17.

Watford parted company with Quique Sanchez Flores at the end of 2015/16, scoring 40 times on their way to finishing in thirteenth spot on 45 points.

Yet the now-departed Walter Mazzarri failed to improve upon those performances in his only season at the helm. The Vicarage Road outfit scored the same number of goals but picked up just 40 points, ending the campaign in seventeenth position.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    A) Abraham
    B) Ayew & 0.5m in the bank for flexibility of jumping on bandwagons without a hit.

B if you're going with 2 up top A if going with 3 up top but I would get a better 3rd striker with 3 up top than Abraham.

Mathematically your actually better off with defensive double ups? I think anyway, say you have 3 defenders and a goalie. If all four of them are from different teams, your relying on 4 teams gettingcleansheets. If two defenders are paired and the other defender is paired with the keeper your just relying on two clean sheets. I might be being special here but im sure halfing the risk is better no? Or is it more complicated then that?

Comes down to whether you would like to put all your chickens in fewer baskets. Increase variance in doubling up.

      2. Pep says
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 4 months ago

That's a very special way of looking at it. If you have 2 double ups in defence, you're looking for 2 clean sheets. Nice rewards yes but if you get none, you get no points.

Spreading across 4 teams, gives you 4 chances of getting a clean sheet which mathematically is better than 2. And going for the bap magnets from each defemce will also add up when these teams decide to get cleans

        1. Turbolag
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 4 months ago

Mathematically the expected value is the same if we consider the probability of a clean sheet to be the same for all the defenders involved. Let's say that probability is 1/4. The expected number of clean sheets for two players on the same team is 1/4*2=1/2. The expected number of clean sheets for two players on different teams is 1/4*1+1/4*1=1/2. Doubling up has the same expected output, it just increases the chances of the extremes (0 and 2 CS) while removing the chance of a middle ground (1 CS).

With preseason now over I have finally settled on this:

    De Gea
    Trippier Cedric Kolasinac Alonso
    KDB Ince JWP
    Kane Lukaku Firmino

    Elliot Carroll RLC Long

Looks light in midfield but Alonso and even Trippier too at times are essentially wingers so not swaying too much from the 3-4-3.
Trips will be fantasy gold this season so will be keeping an eye on his injury, any less than 2 weeks I will keep hold as not to waste a transfer later among the early transfer madness once the game begins.
Only real "risks" I see are Ince and JWP - think Ince will do well with the early fixtures, has had a decent preseason and time for him to make his mark. JWP I'm a little iffy on but don't see too much value elsewhere at that price.
Tom Carroll "bargain of the year" there to cover if needs be anyway

    What do you think ?

Made my mind up on United anyway, would be steering clear offensively only Lukaku is so highly owned.

I think Willian/Fabs offer great value especially Willian on set pieces and taking over Hazard role. I rate Gross over JWP who relies solely on set pieces while Gross is on set pieces and plays as a second striker.

I'd downgrade DDG and Alonso to Valencia and a 4.5, use the money to upgrade a midfielder. Plenty of good options at 7.0 and you'll struggle to pick any of them up if they bandwagon. Pick Zaha or Willian. Waiting for Trip if injured is silly IMO, Spurs are pretty likely to sign a RB in the coming weeks.

So is it a wait and see for Man U defence??

None of them offer much value and the only nailed ones are Bailly and Valencia. If lindelof/blind looks nailed I will be going for them.

DDG is a good option but just think Forster at 0.5 cheaper will get same or more amount of points in first 10 GWs or maybe Ryan/Foster/Begovic at 1.0 less offers more value with save points and whatnot.

    or

    Foster
    Yoshida Trippier Daniels
    Redmond KDB Zaha Pogba Pedro
    Kane Lukaku

So tough debating which formation to rock with.

    My draft

    Hart | (Foster)

Trippier | Cedric | Kolasinac (Rangel | Hanley)

Salah | Alli | KDB | McArthur (RLC)

    Chicarito | Lukaku | Lacazette

If you wanna weaken the back three n strengthen Mcarthur be my guest, rotates well with the rest of the cannon fodder IMO

The Bournemouth captain started at RB every single game Ake started in last season, with Smith either in midfield or on the bench.

      He should start.
