As announced last week, Fantasy Football Scout will be working with Yahoo Daily Fantasy Football throughout the new season.

With a scoring system that awards points for a range of player actions – all powered by the Opta data we know and love – the game looks ideally suited for our community.

To get started, you can sign up and claim a free £50 in credit to your account when you deposit just £5.

Ahead of Friday’s article focusing on player recommendations for Gameweek 1, here are our key strategies and tips for success in the Yahoo game.

Deadlines and Player Selection

As you might expect, we have a budget – this time £200 million – and are tasked with selecting an 11-man line-up.

Notably, you pick a keeper, three defenders, four midfielders and two forwards. You then have a utility slot that can cover a player of any position within your budget restrictions. This effectively allows you to deploy a 4-4-2, 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 formation.

There are no substitutes, which means you will need to ensure that you select certain starters, or use the “late swap” feature to tailor your line-up once teamsheets are announced.

As an example, the deadline for Saturday’s £10k Contest is 3pm. This means that you can view the teamsheets for the six matches included when they are announced at 2pm and tweak your line-up accordingly. So pay close attention to deadlines and try to use the teamsheets to your advantage.

Recruiting a last-minute bargain can free up some valuable funds. It often pays to have a likely target in mind – in case of this scenario developing – so you can act fast to finalise your line-up before deadline.

Scoring Points

Analysis of Yahoo Daily Fantasy’s scoring model is key to success.

One of the first things to note is that goalkeepers earn points for draws and victories. This will clearly influence our decision-making in this position.

While cheap goalkeeping options that play for sides under the cosh will return points for saves, they will need to make seven saves to surpass a rival that keeps a clean sheet and wins the match – and that’s without the latter making a single save in the process.

The holy grail is a keeper that makes a couple of saves, wins the match and keeps a shut-out. The likes of Arsenal’s Petr Cech and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois immediately spring to mind for Gameweek 1. Of course, you’ll pay a premium – relative to other goalkeepers – for these names.

When selecting defenders, you should note that, while they gain points for clean sheets, they are only rewarded with three, compared with a goalkeeper’s six.

Without points for saves, defenders can rely on a series of defensive actions for returns. Clearances are not factored in, but blocks and interceptions are included, as are tackles won. Even so, from our analysis, attacking actions, even for defenders, are vital to their prospects.

If we look at last season’s top Yahoo defenders for minutes per points (above), we see that five of the top six were full-backs.

There are a number of factors at play here, not least their ability to provide crosses and win corners. Full-backs are also more likely to make challenges and therefore win tackles.

Even when we look at the pure centre-backs included in the top ten, both Nathan Ake and Vincent Kompany supplement their defensive actions with some form of attacking points.

With clearances omitted from the scoring, if you’re going to go with a centre-back, you’ll need to find one who is either a monster for interceptions or blocks or, ideally, one that gets forward to provide a threat and shots on goal.

Because shots are absolutely vital in Yahoo.

It stands to reason that attacking players who take shots are more likely to score goals. However, even those who suffer a low conversion rate can prosper.

A shot is awarded with 0.5 points. If it also hits the target it gains another 2 points, with a further 0.5 points if it results in a corner. You can appreciate how this can layer up to reward those who pepper the goal.

If we look at the top ten Yahoo scorers in attacking positions, we can see that the purely creative players – Fabregas aside – are conspicuous by their absence, with shot makers and goal scorers dominant.

As an example, outside of the top ten, Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson outscored Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgian’s superior creativity and assist count could not see him better the Swansea playmaker. Sigurdsson scored 158 points for shots and shots on target, compared with De Bruyne’s 85 – and that proved decisive.

In short, then, we must isolate attacking players that shoot as much as possible. If they make a lot of passes, cross the ball and draw fouls then all the better.

While combative midfielders have a place in the Yahoo game, we should not expect to pay a premium for these. Indeed, they should really be seen as “enablers” to free up funds.

If we look at the minutes per points averages, one of the most successful defensive midfielders is Everton’s Idrissa Gueye. But he only achieved a point every 13.4 minutes, despite winning an impressive 50 points from tackles and 40.5 points from interceptions. Elsewhere, Arsenal pair Mohamed Elneny and Granit Xhaka won a point every 12.9 and 13.1 minutes respectively.

That can’t compete with a player providing crosses and, in particular, shooting for goal. Even those outside of the “elite” players for those metrics can prosper over a midfield destroyer.

As an example, Burnley’s Robbie Brady chipped in with a point every 10.2 minutes, while even the Clarets’ new signing Jon Walters fetched a point every 12.3 minutes while at Stoke City. Walters earned a third of his points through shots and shots on targets combined.

Player Prices

Player valuations will fluctuate weekly based on their previous performances.

Pinpointing the cheap, hidden gems with the potential to score big each week is obviously vital.

Each week our dedicated Yahoo article will attempt to unearth these players while giving you a breakdown of our primary XI for big contests in the Gameweek.

Look out for our first article this coming Friday.

Is Vokes being overlooked at 6.0 for a cheap 3rd striker, particularly if you're happy to play or potentially rotate with Carroll?

Firstly he managed 10 goals and 4 assists in around 2000 minutes, putting him as the 10th best striker not including reclassifications. Considering Gray was favoured in the Burnley team early in the season resulting in that he only played 2/3 of the season I don't think this is bad for a goal shy Burnley team.

If he was playing for any other team he'd surely be being hyped for this sort of output and although Burnley may only score 35-50 goals this season, someone still has to score them!

After a decent end to last season and the player himself epitomising the Dyche style of play, is he not a better option than the likes of Mounie/Abraham who are unproven? He may not be the most glamorous player but with Brady's set piece delivery and Gray gone maybe even offering penalties (highly speculative but not impossible) is he not worth a punt? The opening fixture couldn't be much worse but if you're willing to play the likes of Carroll, Atsu etc I don't think he's a bad shout at all!

Talk about undecided, just swapped out Danilo + Salah + RLC + Benteke to Walker + Zaha + Atsu + Firmino.

He'll probably supply a steady stream of assist points, depends what you're after I guess.

He won't get many 10+ pointers, but I think he can reach 6-8 points on a regular basis.

Remember Fabregas first season for Chelsea? Fantasy gold, playing deeper and pulling the strings, laying on nice assists for teammates.

Could be a similar story for Silva...

Will probably only change this 40 times before Friday...but thoughts so far on this team?

    Foster (Myhill)
Kola - Yoshida - Cedric (Mee, Rangel)
KDB - Mhki - Willian - Milijovetic (Carroll)
    Firmino - Kane - Kaku

Don't like Foster personally, WBA defence isnt good

Change Rangel, his high ownership will inevitably end in a price drop

Double Saints defence is risky. I'd pick another 5m

      Mkhi isn't nailed

      Willian will lose his place

      Mili could play reverse OOP

Double United attack isn't worth it

Although a short term pick, Willian can be explosive, he's a good pick IMO

That's why I have him. All the while Hazard is injured, Willian should play.

Fantasy is a mix of short and long term picks I think, and Willian certainly falls into the short term category.

Missed the brackets, which kinda make the structure irrelevant anyway. Loads will have this value defence.

          Yes? 5.5+5.5+5.0+4.5+4.0 = 24.5
          6.0+5.0+4.5+4.5+4.5 = 24.5

Solanke to be this years' budget Harry Kane? 5m punt looks tempting.

Could be at some stage, like Harry Kane in his breakthrough season though, it would be crazy to get him now.

    1) Iwobi
    2) JWP
    3) Downgrade Danilo or Kolasinac and get Ritchie
    4) Other option up to 5.5??

Even tempted to move the armband onto Kun. I'm getting pretty excited about this.

I think there might be a big scramble to bring in Aguero after gw1

Hi all - really appreciate a RMT -

    Foster - Elliott
    Kompany - Baillly - Dann - Mee - Hunnmeier
    KDB - Mikky - Willian - JWP - Carroll
    Kane - Aguero - Gabbi

Was toying with Lukaku but fancy a fit Kun to go bonkers in week 1 ...

    Need some thoughts 🙂

    Foster (Elliot)
    Cédric-Dann-Kolasinac (Hunemeier-Aké)
    Salah-Alli-Redmond-Willian (LoftusCheek)
    Gabbiadini - Lacazette - Kane

    Thanks!!

    Foster
    Daniel Bertran Monreal
    Fraser Zaha Salah Redmond
    Jesus Kane Lukaku

    Elliot Carroll Suttner Mariappa

    Good enough?

37 point team - 39 if you captain any of the front 3.

Not bad for a gw 1 but not great either

Bottomed - Hey guys! Hope I am nearly there. Thoughts would be most welcome:

    DDG (Elliot)
    B.Davies Daniels Cedric/Stephens (Mee Hunnemier)
    KDB Zaha Willian Gross (Carroll)
    Kane Lukaku Firminho

    0.5 itb

Fear no Mane, Jesus, Aguero, but you cant have them all.

Main area to tweak are my c.7m/5.5m combo, being 2 of:

    1. Gross / Iwobi / Fraser / Ritchie / Demari Gray

    2. Fabregas / Willian / Redmond

    Any thoughts?

Lacazette, Giroud, Welbeck, Ozil, Walcott and Sanchez when he returns, for 3 spots.

Well laca and giroud are up front, iwobi has been preferred over walcott and it doesnt look like sanchez is returnin plus 2 weeks gives me a chance to see what cheap mid starts well

The issue with no Kane is that it's going to take a hit to get him back in if he explodes...

Yes. Thats the #1 factor of the decision. Just picture that first match v Newcastle. You'll be waiting for when not of he'll score

But he's also the most expensive player, holding up funds for midfield madness...

Newcastle will hold him off imo and Chelsea his second fixture so even if he does explode against burnley gw 3 - you can wildcard during international break

I'm currently on a setup with Kane, Lukaku and Jesus, start with all three and then ditch the weakest link later on if needs must.

      90% IMO

Chance of Bong playing some games here, for 100% nailed - pick either Duffy or Dunk from BHA defence

      (BHA fan here)

Final draft RMT guys any glaring mistakes here?

    Foster, (Myhill)
    Daniels/Ake, Kolasinac, Bertrand, (Lowe, Long)
    Zaha, KDB, Iwobi, Ritchie, (Carroll)
    Firmino, Kane, Lukaku

Want utd defence but only ddg viable, but left 1.0itb instead to enable iwobi upgrade when necessary, hopefully to tadic or redmond preferably if they perform.

    Thanks!

Fair point. But I'd say it's 85%+ they both start. Kolasinac the 'risk'. He's in my team.

yeah, if arsenal is playing 3-5-2, Kolasinac has a high chance of playing the lwb position, and not sure on man city starting with jesus or aguero, but on the other hand lacazette and alderweireld both close to 100% start
