Community Watch – Matchweek 19

After 18 dramatic Matchweeks and 180 games our Community Watch tournament has reached the business end of the competition, as 10 teams battle it out for one of six precious knockout stage places.

Matchweek 18 Review

Fashanu Zealand reclaimed top spot after an 18 point win over Germane.

Hungary Neville lost to Bolivia Giroud after winning 11 of their last 12 games. They drop to second place, while the win puts Bolivia in a good position to qualify for the knockouts.

Ibeland beat Gaboniadini by 60 points and sit in third, while Afghanistanislas were thrashed by Emre Canada by a 67 point margin. That’s the Canadian’s second big loss in two games as they conspire to make an easy qualification suddenly look difficult.

Grabbangladesh delivered a Gameweek high 411 points to beat Russia, which kept them alive in the race for a knockout spot. The Reussian’s now sit in sixth position with what looks like a must win game coming up.

Belgium and Kenyaya also won their  games and keep their qualification hopes alive, with the former beating Messidonia, who now sit tenth on the league table and will need a special performance to make the knockouts.

Early runaway favourites Mozambique have squandered their advantage with six consecutive losses. This time around they lost to Georgia Boyd by a mere two points, with qualification now looking unlikely. The Georgians continue to ride their luck, having won their previous encounter by a solitary point.

Full results can be found here.

Qualification Scenarios

Fashanu Zealand: Already guaranteed a top two league spot. A win would see them stay in first.

Hungary Neville: Through to the knockouts already. The top two spot looks good for them even if they lose as their competitors will need huge wins to bridge the points gap.

Ibeland: A win guarantees qualification. Their decent overall points total might take them through even if they lose.

Bolivia Giroud: Again, a win guarantees qualification. A loss will knock them out as their overall points total is second worst among the top ten.

Afghanistanislas: A win takes them through. A loss and they would need all of Russia, Belgium, Kenyaya and Messidonia to lose in order to qualify.

Reussia: They need a win, and hope that no other team below then bridges the point difference between them.

Grabbangladesh: They need a win and then need a couple of results going their way to ensure qualification.

Balegium: They need a win and hope that one of Bolivia Giroud/Reussia lose.

Kenyaya: They need a big win and hope most of their competitors lose.

Messidonia: They need a big win and hope all of their competitors lose as they have the lowest overall FPL points in the top 10.

Mozampique,Cech Republic and Georgia Boyd have an outside chance of qualification.

Note: All these qualification scenarios have been worked up by a human brain. If something mentioned doesn’t go to plan, apologies.

If Grabbangladesh beat Afghanistanislas we should go through.

Balegium would need to beat our score by about 60.

If that happened then we could still overtake Reussia and even Ibeland and Bolivia.

          No pressure JK

The trials and tribulations of Boris and his Salahmon Island team mates were unprecedented in the history of the Community Watch Football competition. Since being fired from the Balegium circus cannons they had undergone an odyssey even the ancient Greeks would struggle to believe. First there was the shark attack that claimed one of the team members, second was the loss of another team member in the pie eating competition scandal. Down to just eight men, the crew had fought bravely, week in, week out, always against the odds and nearly always failing to win their matches….

And so it was that their Green Windmill, still intact though bearing a few cracks and repairs, slowly crept it’s way into Sucre, the capital of the landlocked region, being pulled by a dozen goats, two dogs and Boris himself. As they travelled towards the main square at a snail’s pace, they were slowly joined by BGs (Bolivia Giroudians), who, one by one, gathered around to help pull the Green Windmill along. Without exception every single BG was dressed entirely in dark blue. Soon they were moving at a comfortable speed and shortly after the Salahmon Island team were in the middle of the square on a raised platform surrounded by thousands of BGs. “Wow!”, uttered Sune, to which the entire crowd repeated the word with great fervour. Lord approached a young, bearded man and asked, “I say young man, is Doosra your National Team Captain about?”. The young looked around at his compatriots, apparently completely non-plussed and then said, “Wow, I’m so gorgeous!”, with an elated smile. Swanmore approached another BG and asked the same question, to which the response was “Wow!”. Boris addressed his team mates. “Lads, do any of you know the language they speak in Bolivia Giroud?”. When the crowd heard this last word, they erupted in unison singing their national anthem, imaginatively entitled “Na na na nanana naa, Giroud”.

Finally, Doosra appeared. Straight away Boris could tell that this chap was not indigenous, partly because he spoke perfect English and also because he could have sworn he glimpsed a West Ham shirt underneath the Blue national dress he clearly was expected to wear. “Welcome to Bolivia Giroud,” Doosra exclaimed, cuing another mass rendition of the ‘Na na na…’ song, “just a couple of things to be aware of. Firstly, don’t drink the local brew, it’ll have you praying at the old porcelain alter for days on end, if you know what I mean, and secondly don’t ever mention the, erm, you know…[he lowered his voice to a whisper] the team that play in red.”
“You mean Arsenal?” said Swanmore. Instantly the entire square was brought to a standstill, and the leaves could be heard rustling in the breeze. Swanmore looked around in alarm, and quickly said, “Arsenal are CRAP!”, with a forced smile on his face. After a few short seconds, during which from Doosras expression they could tell he was expecting the worst, the entire crowd screamed, “WOW…ARSENAL ARE CRAP!!”, and they all fell back into the ‘Na na na…” anthem again. Doosra relaxed and let out a big sigh, “Crikey lads, that was close – they are a great bunch here but a little bit, you know – fanatical!”.

Doosra gave them all their hotel room keys along with directions to their hotel and to the National Stadium. “So, listen lads, we are throwing a massive party just before the match, it being, you know, the final one for both our teams. We’ve got the food all sorted except for the dessert, I’m afraid, they don’t really do sweets here…”. Rjcv177 piped up straight away, “We can sort out the dessert, don’t worry, I have an NVQ in catering!”, he beamed. “Excellent!”, sighed Doosra, “we’ll see you at the stadium then, good luck chaps and, you know, may the best team win and all that.”, and after shaking all their hands, he allowed the islanders to go to their hotel and freshen up.

Hours later, all the Salahmons were partying hard with the BGs, dancing around to the national anthem which seemed to be the only song they knew. The food had been immense in both quantity and quality, and the atmosphere was one of brotherly love and respect. Suddenly a fanfare filled the stadium, and rjcv177 appeared a the stadium entrance wheeling in what appeared to be a gigantic pie tin on a wheel barrow. In the middle of the enormous browned pie were at least a hundred fireworks, that upon arriving at the centre of the stadium were all lit and everyone stood back to watch the ensuing display in the night sky. “I say, young chap”, exclaimed Doosra, “this is the most dazzling and delicious dessert I have ever tasted! What is it called?”. Rjcv177 smiled proudly and said, “I call it a Bang Meringue”.

Suddenly silence felt throughout the Bolivia Giroudian crown for the third time that day. “Aubamayang?....” muttered a small BG boy. “Aubamayang!” repeated another fullgrown BG with a grimace. “AUBAMAYANG!!!!!”, the crowd started to scream as they began mang a bee line for the Islanders, with livid expressions of hatred in their eyes. “Quick chaps, I think you’d better all, you know – RUN FOR IT!”, cried Doosra, as the baying throng of Bolivia Giroudians began to surround them all. The Salahmon Islanders were never seen again, although the Green Windmill still silently rotates in the plains of Bolivia Giroud, enjoying peace at last after it’s long journey around the world…..

Salahmon Islands may be 2nd bottom and have the lowest overall total points but you do have the best creative writers and it’s admirable that you’ve kept up the spirit each week. Hats off to you guys 🙂

11.30am on the Salahmons team raft moored on Lake Titicaca, and the excitement is building as the squad convene for the final time. Dreams of fame, glory, or even being the last match shown on 'Match of the Day' have faded away, and the rumours of David Lynch seeking the film rights on Boris' musings have yet to be confirmed. All that's left is to go one more time against a tough, but surprisingly friendly Bolivia Giroud team who desperately need the win ... our kinda game.

Notwithstanding last night's hard partying, we're in good shape: rowing 3500m uphill and training on the salt flats of Salar de Uyani will do that for you. The only problem is our skipper - the team were unanimous that he should lead us out in this last match - but, overcome by the occasion, thin air, and too much Kava, he sadly overdosed on Arsenal when playing his wildcard, and is now in a padded cell screaming about being chased by Bolivia Giroud natives. It's up to the rest of us to win one for the Skipper -
                  our final team is:

                  Greenwindmill (C)
                  Sune
                  Knuckles

                  Lord
                  Swannmoretime
                  Torreslove

                  It's been emotional.

Salahmons lead by 40 but Bolivia Giroud have the edge on differentials:

Very good score for you guys. You needed to win and us to lose (which looks likely) while you out score us by 111 points. I think you’re roughly 106 ahead atm but we have lots and lots extra to go. Still a small outside chance you actually do it.

Your best chance of making it is if Balegium lose (assuming you win), you can follow their match a bit further up -Speedyboyz has posted in relation to it.

Kenyaya and Reussia are currently losing by potentially significant amounts.

Even if we lose, I don't think you'll overtake us by 90 points but you don't need to if the above 3 teams lose.

Well, that is much more positive than I expected. We are not hoping to overtake you just a 5th or 6th position will be more than enough for now

After the Sunday games and assuming Baps don’t change I make it:

                              Salahmons +9 and Azpilicueta
                              BG Hazard x 4

Cheers for the update but that can't be right, surely? You had a +40 advantage and Salah as a differential.

I could be wrong but we only had one extra Salah and Mounie more than offsets that, and you had other differentials too. Either way it’s all eyes on Hazard. Good luck.

An Alonso no show would give Messidonia 10 points and Hungary Neville 7

I think an Alonso no show I should worth +5 to you guys. You get 10 we get 5 (Robertson 6, Bauer 2, Simpson x 3 (-1).

Very interesting. Best of luck 🙂

                                            So we’re +7 vs

                                            Azpi, Hazard x3

There is one extreme scenario that can result in a tie in both cases. This happens if Azpi scores 0 (and plays) , Alonso 2, and Hazard 5

Correction: It is Hungary Neville +10 not 11 (608 Vs 598) which rules out the interesting scenario mentioned above 😀
