Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Kane Falls Short

Tottenham Hotspur dominate the north London derby but almost have to settle for a draw as many Fantasy managers endure a similarly frustrating afternoon.

Harry Kane scored his seventh goal in as many matches against Arsenal to secure a 1-0 win, although the scoreline could, and should, have been considerably more emphatic.

Spurs had three times as many attempts on goal as their rivals and six shots on target to the Gunners’ one, with Kane both the hero and the villain of the piece.

The striker’s winner, from a Ben Davies assist, rewarded the 980,000+ (17.8%) Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who handed him the captaincy.

But that was the only one of four chances, three of which were deemed big opportunties, that Kane managed to convert.

His profligacy cost him the chance of any bonus points and kept Arsenal in the match, with substitute Alexandre Lacazette missing two late chances to grab something from an encounter in which they were second best throughout.

It’s still five goals in five Gameweeks for Kane, but his failure to add any bonus to his six-point haul will be seen as vindication for the decision by many to seek captaincy rewards elsewhere – particuarly if that happened to be Sergio Aguero.

For the first time since Gameweek 21, the Spurs forward was not the most-captained player, with 1,265,966 (22.0%) of armbands instead being handed to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.

Whether the Egyptian will be able to confirm that decision as the correct one – particularly in light of Aguero’s stunning 21-point haul – remains to be seen.

What is not in doubt is the continued decline of the Spurs midfield as a consistent points-scoring unit.

Son Heung-min, who was sold by 101,000+ going into the weekend, blanked for the fourth successive Gameweek and made way for Erik Lamela on 69 minutes, while Dele Alli (two assists in six matches) and Christian Eriksen (two goals in six) also failed to deliver.

Davies thrives again

Instead, it was the backline that impressed.

Davies’ sixth assist of the season brought him level with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta as FPL’s most creative defender. That has drawn a reaction from the market, with Davies the most signed player ahead of Gameweek 28 – attracting 34,000 owners to this point.

A clean sheet and maximum bonus brought in 12 points for the Welsh international’s 15.1% ownership and they will be hoping he is handed an eighth successive start against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 28 if Danny Rose is given the nod for Spurs’ midweek Champions League tie.

Fellow defenders Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez were handed the other bonus points as Mauricio Pochettino’s side made it three straight home clean sheets in the league.

Ramsey misses out

As for Arsenal, the day started badly when the fourth most popular purchase of the Gameweek, Aaron Ramsey, was ruled out with a groin problem.

And it barely improved after that as Arsene Wenger’s uncharacteristically negative tactics, crowding the central areas and inviting crosses, backfired when Kane headed home.

The Gunners’ attacking weapons were also blunted as a result, with the most bought player ahead of Gameweek 27, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, subbed off on 63 minutes after creating precisely zero chances and having no shots.

That was a huge blow to his 288,000+ new managers, while the 235,000+ who brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were equally disappointed.

The striker had no shots on goal, a mere two penalty area touches and 23 touches overall – the fewest of any player who started the match. He was, however, unlucky to be flagged offside when put through in the first half.

All those new managers on Ramsey, Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang could well be left to rue their move further as Arsenal entertain Man City next – if, that is, the fixture even goes ahead.

Should City need an FA Cup fifth round replay with Wigan, then their Gameweek 28 match at the Emirates will have to be rescheduled.

The Man City match-up is hardly an ideal opportunity for Arsenal’s defence to step up either.

They’ve now gone nine matches without a clean sheet and with a visit from Pep Guardiola’s free scorers, or a blank, to come next, further sales of Nacho Monreal, who was moved on by 82,000+ this week, look more than likely.

Didn't Sanchez do last year, or was it "only"? I'm not greedy, I'll settle for 3 from the Pharoah today. I can survive him making two points less than Kun

Was just looking at the FA Cup fixtures along with GW 31 fixtures,

We could be having a slighty better GW instead of just 4 teams based on several scenarios which has a high chance of happening

Southampton winning WBA -> Allowing WBA vs Bou fixture to go on
ManUtd winning Huddersfield -> Allowing Huddersfield vs Palace

8 potential teams playing suddenly doesn't seem that bad after all to get around 7-8 and not using the Free Hit chip for now..

I think this GW shows a gap like that can be caught up in almost one go with a bit of luck. So definitely by the end of the season.

With the right players I guess... Both my brother's and mine team is really identical thus I have to come up with something different to catch the game. Must really use the free hit chip well to cut the gap. Still keeping the faith. Haven't lost him in 4 years since I started FPL and don't want to start this season!

Ahh haven't seen that curently. If I'm not planning to use my Free Hit in 31 then I would love to stock up on those who are playing instead of going with those who have good fixtures but yet have a blank in 31 (Leic players)

Yeah that's one of my reasons I'm thinking of using the Free Hit. Stocking up a full team with 11 players doesn't sound horrid even though the fixtures aren't especially suitable.

Plus using the free hit allows me to really change my team and play catch up now with the in form players without worrying about GW31

I thought of the most likely options. Didn't want to factor in shocks.

Though Leicester losing to Sheff United will throw a huge spanner in the Free Hit being used in GW31.

Unable to spend much time here or researching on fixtures so yeah, just trying to plan ahead and not get caught up by price rises and potential early transfers.

one thing to remember if you play FH in 31, all those players that blank in 31 will have a double in 34 so you can delay your WC until the DG37 if you want

I don't mind folk having a go, as long as they're being reasonable.

I just don't want the ScoutCast to turn into a "one size fits all" FFS advice show. I like us to talk about our own views on players from our own perspective, I think it's better that way.

But then the danger is that what's said on there, from that perspective, completely overrides our articles.

I didn't get Aguero for my own reasons which I put across here...

            http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2018/01/29/the-burning-question-swap-kane-for-aguero/

But I still edit all the articles and he still got recommended when he warranted it.

Kane has absolutely ruined my season. In the first half every time I captained him for a good game he blanked, I tried getting him out and he scored braces. Then was part of the original Kane exit and he got back to back hat tricks. Got him back for the double and he blanked. Then went for the second Kane exit, at least I got the aguero hattie, but the rest wasn't great.

Needless to say transferred out aguero for Kane (C) this weekend, so painful!!

I've owned Kane, Aguero and Firmino for about 12 consecutive weeks. I accidentally swapped Kane out 2 weeks ago instead of Aguero. I brought in Wilson and KDB, which last week saw 4 points but this week...sometimes you just get lucky in this game!

I think when you get Kane (post August ;-), you have to keep him and just ride it out because predicting where his points and big points will come is almost impossible. All we know is, they will come.

I'm a Kane zealot and he even got me. I left him out of my WC team to captain Lacazette before getting Kane back. He scored 2 at Everton - his first goals of the season and Laca got me 1.

Aguero has been different because of the previous rotation risk so there have been long periods where we could ignore him. It also seems he's more predictable when City's home form is so much stronger than away.

Salah just scores every week so he makes it easy 😉

Captaincy this coming week is tricky too - Salah, Kane & Aguero all have a case! It pains me to say this as an Arsenal fan, but I think we'll get trounced. Probably the one emotional thing I never do though is captain a player vs my team, so Salah/Kane for me.

Brought him in all the way back in GW9. Looked back to himself V Swansea the week before and bear in mind Jesus was still fit then so was a big risk.

In the first game v Spurs he was subbed off after 57 mins and to add salt City got a pen...which Jesus missed!

Kept and captained for Bou (32) and the rest is history.

Should have got at least a brace against Newcasle away, got a hatrick in the return game. Been a decent buy and captained for 3 major hauls.

Not sure what do to but team needs major overhaul because I have Aguero, Kane, Alonso and Ota and its a bit unbalanced.

I can't believe I didn't captain Aguero man. It was a tough choice as I have Salah Aguero Kane and Hazard in my team so captain choice was very difficult. I went for Hazard and if he gets a brace it could transform my season. But yeah gutted I changed from Kun to Hazard pretty much last minute.

Feedback on the ScoutCast (seeing as Mark is around 😉 )

    Things I like:
Banter between them especially when Granville is involved
Talking about their teams and plans
When they have guests to mix things up

Things I don't like so much:
    Group think
Rough with the smooth - honestly no one cares and it goes on too long
Fantasy Island Risks - no one keeps track so what's the point?

Anyone else want to weigh in?

Rough with the Smooth is one we get the most favourable feedback on. Someone on the live chat the other week said they didn't like that bit and about 20 people waded in to defend it. Seems they particularly like hearing about awful Gameweeks in particular. Human nature can be a cruel at times.

Greenwindmill keeps track of the fantasy island risks...we do a tally every now and again from his research.

The group think thing is a bit of a myth too...we've all got really different teams and ranks. This week alone Sanchez, Kane and Salah have all got the armband. Sometimes we agree though, granted. 😉

And yet Andy got Sanchez in. I got KDB in. Az backed wing backs before any of us. Granville wildcarded a blinder of a team at Christmas. Mark backs Pickford, I back Fabianski.

I've got Mili in....only one. Mark and Az have backed Hazard with the captaincy recently.

We all have different ways of playing the game - that's a key part of the discussion.

Yes none of us got Aguero in...but for every example of that we can give many more where we are markedly different.

You're referring to the bit part players, Jonty. The ones chosen after Kane, Salah and Sterling. There will always be differences in goalkeeper, defence, 3rd strikers and 4th mids.

Rarely do we see anyone try what you might deem to be a maverick or foolhardy approach even, other than Granville. I'm not saying risk your season for the sake of Scoutcasts entertainment but if you're chasing in a ML or OR, sell Kane for Aguero and invest the 1.5m elsewhere. Try something different and captain Salah every week.

Interesting to hear that De Bruyne is a bit part player. You have seen the midfielders points table haven't you? 😉

But on your second point last season I did do alot of my moves - which were very maverick (points hits, Giroud!) - for Scoutcast entertainment. I did awfully - so if anyone followed that advice they would have most likely done the same.

Is it really bad advice to promote Salah, Sterling or Kane? Three of the best players in FPL this season.

The podcasts are great, discussion of your teams, what happened in the last week, transfers planned for the following week, captaincy issues, who’s hot and who’s not and so on, with light banter in the mix. Great entertainment for ffpl players and football fans. The more guests the better.

You are being wrongly accused of encouraging group think. The mix is balanced and you all come across like you are giving honest opinions. At times I thought Andy was keeping his cards close to his chest and I wondered why but Ive changed my mind about that. It’s not the perfect show but it’s impressive how close you get. Show me a perfect show if you ever find one!!

I’m not interested in those frills: rough with the smooth as an example. The above poster is right there. The romantics might like it .... I see what you’re saying.

For clean sheets and other tips perhaps you could just recommend one between the lot of you: do a vote. The risk picks are not useful: nobody is going use them the way you do it currently.

Yeah, that was probably me that voiced that on the live chat. Not sure it was 20 people who waded in but regardless I wouldn't take that as positive feedback. They are the ones still watching. Others who agree have probably long since turned off.

I personally don;t see the point in the rough with the smooth. It's basically someone saying they sold a player who did well that one week, and got a player in who blanked (rough) and smooth is vice versa. I couldn't care less about what a random anecdotal selection have done with their teams. But, to appease some, I would recommend limiting it to the one' roughest' and one 'smoothest'.

Fantasy risks is pointless, especially as half the cast haven't even thought about it before the question comes up. Not even sure what you expect us to do with that information anyway.

Agree with the call on Rough with the Smooth. However, I do like fantasy island risks. Some seriously good differentials in there.

The format (order of each segment) could change every couple of weeks to make it less formulaic. Would welcome a new insights, like Jay’s, every few weeks. Out-of-the-box thinking makes for an entertaining show.

Otherwise, can’t fault it. Such a great show and an integral part of my week. Love listening and weighing up Scoutcast opinions with my own.

      - Rough with the smooth, I don't mind it. Maybe just call out the best and worst though?

      - Less focus on personal teams at times, only at times though as I think it's needed.
      - Keep the flow going, sometimes (no offence meant here) I think Jonty stops the flow when there's some good banter going on.
      - Contradicting that point. A couple more regular slots such as fantasy island risks etc. Would be cool. My imagination is limited.
      - Agree with the point on having so many people on. Don't particularly want to see anyone go, but maybe rather than do round tables on every topic. Have it more flowing and if say Luke/AZ/Andy (I'm going to say they're slightly quieter). want to chip in then they can. Also contradicting that though I think you need to do a round table or people don't get heard.

Overall, I'll still listen. Only thing for me is that flow. Also, can we get the jingles on the youtube version at all? They were awesome.

The scoutcast is a tradition for me. Since the first ever 1 ive been a listener. I'm just happy it's going strong still but here are mine for what they worth

      Likes
      - For me Mark has to host it, im just old skool and a traditionalist.
      - The new guests ( Jay was a good addition who mixed it up )
      - captaincy and transfers
      - Jonty is comedy gold

      Dislikes

      - too stats focused ( sorry guys stats are overrated and it ain't poker ;-))
      - too many scouts, keep it at 3 and rotate the 3rd spot. Or have 4 but have the odd poster as a special guest
      - Agree with rough smooth I don't care enough about how non rivals have done but that's more my problem lol

I did used to prefer it when Granny and Mark where at the helm. They worked off each other and it was more deep discussion about topics of intrest. Jonty was a great addition. Now it's a bit to based on each members perspective and a load of stats. Think we have had some really bad shouts of late with players ( Daniels, Baur etc)

Bauer's had two clean sheets in his last four, went into GWK 27 on form in terms of crossing etc and plays GWK 31. For 4.5 he's not going to pull up trees but is still a good budget option for the odd clean sheet and guaranteed fixt for those who don't want to use their free hit chip GWK 31.

But that's another example of how there isn't really a group think. Az and I backed Bauer. Mark backs Daniels, who I'm not so keen on. Andy prefers to spend even less and went for Francis. For a rotating cheap defender all those have merit - good to give listeners and viewers a range of options.

I understand why you seem to be taking the feedback on this thread and particularly group think accusations a little personally, it’s about you after all, but obviously there is a highly engaged community here who want to have a say so could be a time just to let the community have their say without fighting back. At the end of it it’s up to you and the rest of the team what you take out from it and what you discard. Sometimes how people perceive you is more real than how you perceive yourself.

Not at all. No ‘fighting back’. It’s great to be involved in something that people feel so passionate about.

Community involvement in the scoutcast is something I’ve been heavily involved in. From rough with the smooth to community questions it is about getting as many of the community involved as we can. That’s something I’ve been involved in all my journalistic career, especially from my local newspaper days - getting lots of faces and views of readers in is important for circulation and is popular.

But at the same time it is important to bust some myths and present the other side to a discussion. The group think one is a particular issue that has become a bit of a myth.

I don’t have your years of journalism experience but I work in an industry which deals with customer feedback on a daily basis (as most industries do). We believe that we learn more from listening to the negative feedback, however confronting, than from seeking out and validating ourselves with the positive.

If enough of our customers believe us to be something then we probably are.

The ScoutCast had to change when the site became more of a commitment - back then it felt more like a hobby and if one of us couldn't make it, we called it off. It wasn't that much of a big deal if that happened.

These days, even if it goes ahead and I miss out there are questions asked!

So we had to grow it, expand the team and make it more robust when folk dropped in and out. These days I can afford to be ill or have family comitments and Jonty, Andy and Az do a great job.

We needed that, Granville and I couldn't be machines week in week out - he got twins and a political career for one!

            Cheers both.

Absolutely understand things change and commitments change and I hope I don't sound disrespectful to the other guys as it wasn't my intention. Just 2 or 3 work off each other better imo. More comedy involved ( kind of like s double act)

I guess it's more as im traditionalist . Having a scoutcast is better than none at all so maybe I need to change with the times 🙂

Can't argue with the range of options Jonty . That's what the show is there for end of the day, don't want it to sound like pure criticism because if I didn't like the show i wouldn't watch it ..

It's ironic that you shouted this because now you'll just be dismissed as hard of hearing. 😆

But you have a point! I've constantly had to tweak the volume between speakers on the Scoutcast and it would be nice to get all the voices modulated somehow to make it an easier listening experience. I've no idea if this is even possible?

Mark - your voice does go up and down a lot...obviously you can't change the voice you're comfortable talking in so it would require some nifty technological solution to fix this, I imagine.

I get the need to have a bigger "squad" with your and Granville's commitments but what that means is that if everyone is available there are just too many people involved. It also seems to lessen the opportunity for guests as there are so many regulars. My suggestion would be...

Mark - permahost barring man flu etc
Granville - permanent invite as the other founder (like ex winners of the US Masters)
One from Jonty / Az / Andy on rotation and depending on availability (I'd also add Luke although he seems to be out of contention now)
A guest (or another of the above if no guest)

With everyone else wading in, I will too 😀

I find the rough and the smooth tedious to the point where I actually skip it now. I know which players have done well and which haven't, and can imagine scenarios where things happen to people that are good or bad - I can even imagine scenarios worse than those presented! I understand the desire to get people involved by telling their stories, but I can hear people's stories on the boards and find it really quite boring.

Other than that, nothing needs drastic changing. Personalities will always rub people the wrong way, that's fine. Some people like stats and some don't, and presentation styles are always going to vary. Talk about your teams, trends, transfers, all the other stuff is really great.

I think all the segments are good and should stay. Except rough with the smooth 🙂

Agree with most of these. Although would personally argue for more stat based discussion. Such great work goes into the articles, would be worth delving deeper into the numbers when weighing up two or three players.

I'd like more discussion on stats if it was properly analysed.

Probably a personal thing but can't stand it when people use stats in isolation, when previously a member, the stats articles were in depth and didn't do this so really enjoyed them.

However on the scoutcast I find it to be "Aguero has scored 20 goals in January". Ok but he's played 4 times as many minutes as everyone else.... That's not a genuine example but just what I see happen. Again, it's completely free so wouldn't expect that at all. Just my opinion on it.

I agree about the granville/mark point above. Wasn't around when Jonty joined so for me went from granville/mark to the current format. I do like the point that it was a deep discussion about points of interest. Perhaps use that as a framework.

Could do with being aired later in the week so we/they have the most information possible.

There was a gameweek not too far back when blanks were on topic and city played twice between the scoutcast and the gameweek start. We also got the shock news of the Arsenal/City fixture being on.

Sort of agree here, but I think we have so much info post-scoutcast that maybe it doesn't matter so much? Scoutcast for me isn't so much about advice. Might be for others though.

Watching the Rough and the smooth I don't understand why you would like to listen to both sides? Quite often, there's a Good Rough along with a boring Smooth OR a Good smooth with a boring Rough.....
Why not call it ROUGH OR the SMOOTH...
That way you get the best roughs or the best smooths

On the whole I wouldn't change much. I listen to every FPL pod under the sun
when I'm bored at work and the scoutcast is the best out there.

I'd see Luke back on and have Jay on more often.

And maybe a special guest or two ... Like that Virgin fella 😉

Rough with the smooth can be shortened a bit!
Maybe just discuss the best & worst

Also i like the idea of having a diff guest for the 4th spot each week...like another mod/poster from here

I realy liked the episode with jay it mixed things up! Yes kanexit 1 was a failure but he was different

Would like more variety of opinion....like when jesus got injured it would've been nice to have someone on who got & advocated for aguero

I've started listening the last few weeks and quite like it.

I think the criticisms of group think are really just symptomatic of everyone's anger at not getting Kun. Tbh the Scoutcast probably did influence me in getting Firmino over Kun and spreading the funds elsewhere, but that was still completely my decision and I think criticism of them is unfair.

One small thing I don't like is the clean sheet predictions since I can just look at odds - but I do enjoy fantasy island risk (and rough with the smooth for that matter).

Agree with the rough and smooth part, I fast forward that. Not bothered about it, not relevant to my team. Same with clean sheets and Fantasy island risks, it is easy to choose a risky player that "might" score well, but I don't find it helpful. Saying this overall I love the scoutcast, the more banter and mick taking the better. Knowledge of players, formations, teams has been excellent. Can't really avoid group think, people think what they think. You're not going to mix your team up for the sake of the scoutcast being "representative".

I agree that rough with the smooth could be dropped or at least reduced. We all read people’s roughs on the site at the weekend or on twitter anyway so not sure we need to focus on them again.

Some new features would freshen things. Maybe who’s on your watch list for the next couple of weeks or your long term plans?

It’s a great show and still the best podcast out there but maybe next season it could be tweaked slightly.

Something about a Yahoo game I couldn't give a toss about.

Regarding everything else, I've never watched a scout cast, don't pay attention to group think, maybe commented twice in rough with the smooth, and back in my day fantasy island was a top rating tv show.

But no one listens to me. 😆

Personally love the scoutcast and love how we can get involved and support, or chastise, everyone's teams. Like rough with the smooth just want to have an interesting enough week to be mentioned.
      just keep the banter flowing!

Obviously I'm a fan as I ask a question every week- my constructive feedback:
-cut down the 'How did our teams do this week' I'm not saying eliminate it completely but it's often 20mins or so long and I think there is fat to be trimmed there.
-Agree completely with the fantasy island risk point. This is a section that does need a how did we do last week and who's winning, that shouldn't take too much time adding that on.

I also want to commend Granville this season as I think he has really upped his game; he's definitely the one that pops the group think bubble when he comes on. Bravo.

Other than that can't complain love the scoutcast.

I like it. Better than it was. And always improving.
I would suggest though that jonty calms down just a tad when doing his weekly mocking of marks choices. It just goes on and on.

Also. I miss the opening theme tune.
Can you bring it back, even if just for 1 episode. And all the casters have to do a little arm dance to it and sing along.. pleeeeease.

My views it's a brilliant podcast and well balance team regarding views. I think its more informative than ever happy with stats and discussions.

I do think the schedule timing is the bigger issue I understand Mark has commitments but needs to be Thurs or wed not Tuesday as so many things change before deadline .

Also no idea why it has to wait till Friday to upload to the site I am frustrated having to download as podcast directly from YouTube to listen to it.

As with anything you can't please everyone. Personally I enjoy the personal side and the different factors people make their decisions on.

The rough with smooth can go on a little, maybe just the best and worst case would do.

The Jay episode I particularly enjoyed, could be a good idea to have a guest on every so often, a fixture specialist would be handy in a couple weeks.

Any changes is welcomed but as an avid listener of the Scoutcast, I think it's good as it's...Jonty brings brilliant sense of humor in the discussion, Mark is the host and watching an episode without him is weird but life gets in the way..I prefer the Scoutcast merrier with Az and Granville...add a new guest once in a while like Jay and Luke..
p.s. I believe that FPL Virgin is due an invitation to the Scoucast, why not invite him for the next episode..

I would personally change it from a Tuesday to a Thursday. There's midweek fixtures almost every week these days with all the competitions, Europe and replays going on, so often what's relevant on Tuesday is irrelevant by Thursday.

Except Europa League, there are no games on Thursday either whereas on Tuesday the Scoutcast starts while the games are actually on sometimes. This not only cuts cuts out a chunk of would-be live viewers, but stuff can happen in those games that directly affects the topics being discussed by the guys. For example, a month or so back Morata and the benefits of keeping him for the weekend were being discussed, while at the same time he was being booked for exuberant celebrating and subsequently suspended!

I love the scoutcast, I listen almost every week and have done for a few years. I wouldn't change anything except the below:
      -Limit of 4 scoutcasters per episode, 5 perhaps absolute maximum, any more and it becomes cluttered. Yes guests could be on there occasionally, but I think Mark, Jonty, Andy, Az and Granville are a good core team and offer enough differing points;
      -Each scoutcaster should be allowed to speak in the first 2-3 mins or so, probably a quick round up of their gameweek. I feel sorry for Andy or Az when it's 5 mins in and they get a chance to speak, and have to round up their GW and give their opinion on anything already discussed, all whilst being nudged to move on (or worse, interrupted!);
-Mark, there's a point above poorly made but i agree with. Often your volume tails off towards the end of sentences. Andy and Az are very clear so it can't be a general scoutcast thing.

Keep up the good work guys!

I only discovered the Scoutcast about 12 months ago and I look forward to it every week. I wish I had found it earlier. Anyone who gives their free time to the Scoutcast and this site can only be applauded. Looking at the state of Mark's room, he seems to have a busy life. Andy delayed sorting out his boxes of stuff with the house move to appear on the show and his own channel.

I seem to be in the minority that likes Rough with the Smooth. I enjoy hearing tales of woes and maverick moves that come off. Sometimes there's only been one or two smooths if it's been a low scoring week and it's not a segment that goes on too long in any case.

I enjoyed the episodes when James Egersdorff and Peter Kouwenberg were on. It's nice to hear a different person now and again. I hope some more in the Hall of Fame appear in the future.

I personally like more than three people being on the Scoutcast. Luke hasn't been on for a while so it would be nice to have him on soon.

It's nice that there's variety in the Scouts ranging from dullard (Jonty) [based on this season anyway] to Maverick (Az). It would be boring if everyone had the same ideas.

I hope the Scoutcast, and this site, continues for many years to come.

      - I like ‘rwts’ because it brings a bit of light relief and the good/bad that we all experience and a good way of involving the community
      - Not bothered about FIR, no one would ever pick those players so why bother.
      - would like to see a bit more about the ‘watch list’ for each of the 4 positions
      - would like to see the scouts a bit more focussed when they talk about their teams and what they may do, why they are doing things the way they are, strategy etc. because that bit comes over as ramblings of mad men 😉

        Think it works most seasons.
Different approaches - Mark or Jonty's.
Nothing wrong with the other hosts. Do enjoy Granville's appearances particularly when he's being a bit contrary.
Just thinking it's suffering a bit the last few weeks because the hosts ORs are in quite a tight grouping. Last year Mark going well Jonty having to catch meant the discussions offered more diverse opinions/strategies etc. which could "appeal" to a wider base of FPLers. Year before roles were reversed from memory.
Bringing Peter & Jay off the bench was good. Jay going well & Peter struggling at the time explaining their strategies did offer a broader outlook for more players.
Maybe rotating players from different rankings to the hosts could freshen it up sometimes.
Aguero thing is a non-story. Perfectly valid reasons given weeks ago for not bringing him in. Plenty of article info for this week on the merits of Aguero for this week. Bit of a perfect storm because of Aguero's haul yesterday but if he blanked no-one cares. Obviously it'll probably lead to a bit this week on Scoutcast do you bring him in even now, owners sell etc. because as the hosts are all non-owners it's relevant.

For me the main thing is that the ScoutCast gives us an insight into the Scouts' thought-processes and how they reach their decisions; irrespective of whether they are commenting on each other's teams, giving clean sheets or reacting to Rough with the Smooth.

I'm happy for the 'Cast to evolve any way necessary as long as we don't lose this...

Fantasy Island Risk had more point when it was competitive between just Mark and Granville and they kept score.

Now it just seems to be four or five random choices for a single game-week that the scoutcasters probably aren't even seriously considering for their own teams, and if anyone is keeping score then it isn't mentioned.

Greenwindmill keeps score and we reveal the latest from him
          Every now and again.

I always recommend someone I’d get ... and spend quite some time researching that. Often I am considering them for my team but sometimes for my squad structure they don’t fit. We are actually quite competitive and v quick to let each other and others know if our risk comes off .

I agree with most of this except I like fantasy island risks. You get rid of groupthink by alternating people or bringing in guests but the guys take time out of their regular lives to do this so I accept it’s tough to have people making time like Luke. I don’t think it’s complete groupthink either. There are enough disagreements on there. Jonty for example is much more stats based, I think Az tends to have a bit of gut feeling and Mark is halfway between stats and eye tests. Granville is the maverick for sure and not afraid to challenge consensus views. All in all I’m grateful for their views.

I like it how it is, the podcast is almost like getting thoughts out in the open. It’s not a requisite of the subscription people pay nor is it an expectancy. The fact there is even a video version is good of them to put out.

Agreed that constructive criticism and feedback is good, but I think people are going over the top here.

        Hi everybody,

Long time lurker here, more recent member, but pretty much never post. Great hot topic with great suggestions and wanted to share my thoughts.

I just first started listening to the scoutcast midway through last season. Absolutely love it and it’s something I look forward to each week! From top to bottom- Mark, Jonty, Granville, Andy, Az- great group of guys to listen to. And it's always great having different guests on the show!

First thing, I can’t help but think how different the scoutcast will look 5 years from now. I’d like to think more people are watching it than listening to it via audio. It kind of does look straight out of the 1990’s lol. I like how Andy has his team displayed on the screen on his personal podcasts. I just think it really adds to the commentary and is easier to follow when you all talk about your teams. I’m not saying all of your handsome mugs aren’t enough on the eyes but I think some better visuals will certainly add to it. But I’m not a technology guy at all so I shouldn’t be talking…

My second suggestion is probably a bit controversial. I enjoy how the scoutcasts are like “hangouts on the air," with back and forth commentary and banter about football. For me- I just like hearing people talk fantasy football as the only fantasy football my friends/co-workers talk about is fantasy American football- I’m from New York. However, on the flipside, it is interesting to think about how many topics you all could cover if say you limited the discussion on each topic to 5-10 minutes or so. Sometimes there will be a long discussion on certain topics (usually important ones) and sometimes I feel that there are many good topics/questions that we have that go undiscovered and untouched. Mark does well transitioning topics but it is something I noticed. But again- love listening to you guys and something I look forward to every Tuesday evening.

Always enjoy the Scoutcasts and its guests, yes rough with the smooth can be done away with but apart from that ive got no problems with it

Thursday episodes would be better info wise but maybe the casters have real jobs and family commitments except Tuesdays so keep it on Tuesdays for as long as you want, end of the day you pick your own team, why play FPL otherwise? no fun if others are picking your team

I might be making it up, but did there used to be an actual FFS team and Mark and Granville would take it in turns to make a transfer each week. I would prefer that incorporated into Fantasy Island Risks. Despite Green Windmill taking notes, I think it is a weak link in the ScoutCast.

You all do a fantastic job and I look forward to watching or listening to the scoutcast every week.

I read the above comments with interest, a few have called for the abolition of the risks but I would disagree with this as they have proved really useful in the draft format of the game in particular.

I don't mind the scoutcast being long either, that means more in depth discussion which can only be a good thing. The only times it does drag slightly is when the conversation goes round in circles, such as recently when mark made an early transfer. Jonty spent 20 minutes trying to wind him up about it to no avail. There's a difference between somewhat tedious banter like that and something like what we saw on marks wildcard-which was wonderful winding up and hilarious to watch!

On recommendations, one I would like to suggest is for you to occasionally include segments on how to be a better FPL player. You all have impressive rank histories, it would be good to hear some of that wisdom imparted, such as a comparison of formations and the benefits and drawbacks of 4-4-2 v 3-5-2 v 3-4-3 etc, and when to change formation in a season, what needs to be seen for you to advocate a switch etc. Or what are the key stats you look for in a captain? Just a couple of ideas 🙂

        Keep up the good work!

It will always attract criticism it’s the modern world it seems, don’t worry about giving tips so much like buy Salah for example but more strategy guides and things to consider
One of my main complaints about the ‘modern’ scoutcast is there is to much chat about each scouts team, wasn’t a problem when only 2 people but now there is 5 it takes up to much time , I dont really care about Jontys or Az team only my own team
So spend more time on the big questions of the week and strategy
For example this gw a big issue for Aguero owners is whether to sell because of fixtures/Jesus/31 , but this won’t be discussed much as nobody on the cast owns him. We all should be considering our plans up to and including 31 , it would interesting to hear Scout’s general view on this ...not only on what This means for their own team

Maybe bring in the tools of the site (members tools that is, not certain posters 🙂 ) , like who is RMT pushing us to buy , watch list recommendations, etc
By all means keep the banter and mocking debate of each other’s team but all our issues are different so keep it general
Don’t be scared to go out on a limb and be controversial...if you think it’s time to sell Alonso say it , if people follow you and Alonso scores it’s not your fault it’s theres
        You can’t please everyone

        Keep up the good work

The sense of entitlement on here is outrageous. If you don't like it, jog on. If you were critiquing the members area that you paid for then fair enough.

And speak for yourself - "honestly no on cares and it goes on too long" is just your uninformed opinion - for what it's worth I think it's one of the most enjoyable parts.

I mentioned in another thread, I'd like to see the contributors teams as a graphic on screen so I can keep up. I could, of course, research this myself but it'd take a bit of light sleuthing!

I enjoy Rough with the Smooth, but I loathe the title. It's a bit too Junior Gazette for me!

        i love the scoutcast.

Only thing that would make it better for me is if possible, there was an index as to what things are discussed at what time, for example if you are talking about 3rd strikers for 5 minutes but im set on not playing 3 strikers i can skip to the next segment without accidentally missing something else.

I'll defend fantasy island risks by saying they are great for the draft game as lots of those types of players are available and transfers unlimited.

Maybe the Fantasy Island risks segment could be freshened up a bit somehow, but it'd be a shame to get rid of it altogether. The basic premise is a good one - I'm always keen to know which leftfield punts people are sizing up.

But yeah I think rough with the smooth is a bit of a yawnfest...and a little more diversity in opinions wouldn't go amiss - though realistically, that can only happen organically or not at all.

I dont understand all the rough with the smooth hate. Yes the hot topic does lend itself to people bragging ,but in the Scoutcast it is nice knowing someone else out there has done worse than me.

It's a human quality taking comfort from knowing someone else is in a worse boat than you.

I really enjoy the scoutcast lads. Aguero's haul just released a bit of a powder keg of saltiness I think. I got a tad annoyed myself. Keep up the good work!

        1) Instead of spending the first 20 minutes or so talking about how you did the past gw maybe mention a few things that went well and then link your teams in the video description (or in the article) if people want to have a more in depth look?
        2) The rough with the smooth is a bit too much sometimes and especially painful to listen to the smooths when you've had an awful gw yourself.
3)Need more community members on. Sometimes the discussions can get (and not to sound overly harsh) a bit stale. I just feel that after watching several episodes you can kind of predict your guys' thinking on certain topics and subjects and so would be nice to sometimes hear a more refreshing approach.
4)I really like the fantasy island risk segment and to further that, would it be possible to do something like fantasy island risk for the coming month or maybe like a player of the month prediction? Maybe score predictions or at least general result predictions for the upcoming week?

Overall though appreciate the time you guys take out of your week to these and they're actually great to listen to (even if it takes me til Friday night to summon the strength after an awful gw)

Agree about the Rough/Smooth. I have never liked it and I have heard every single episode (it started about 100 ago).

Disagree with the 'Rough with the Smooth' being unimportant. You'll miss it if it's gone.

I was reading this yesterday, nodding in agreement with the majority against the section 'Rough with the Smooth' - while I am interested in the Scout cast members GWs, I'm not really interested in the communities rough and smooth GWs as I have no buy-in with them. They are faceless entities with very little meaning to me.

        This was my stance yesterday.

However, I have now reflected on this and remembered the time I was read out on this section - I was thrilled! It was like I had suddenly became famous (which I wasn't!). When Jonty had spent the time to look through the hundreds of posters and picked out my rough (very ROUGH at 21 pts) GW It really made me feel a part of the community, and goes back to what Jonty was saying yesterday - get the community involved!

TLDR: I was against the 'Rough with the Smooth' it but am not now as I think its great for all those average FPL managers (like me) who can get some recognition, for better or worse.

Contrary to some opinions, I enjoy listening to the rough with the smooth. It's always good to hear about people who have tried something different (both positive and negative) but it would be nice to see how some of those rough/smooths do over a longer period. Perhaps post some of the teams on twitter (if the manager agrees) and those who are interested can then see if that particular week's rough was a one off or if they were able to gain further advantages/disadvantages on the back of it

There has to be some form of forfeit for the scoutcast "loser", which will hopefully bring back some of Granville's competitive edge.

It's also nice to hear alternative views every now and again, with the greatest of respect none of you are maverick managers (despite what you might think). Pulling people like Luke, Peter, Jay etc in every now and again is really refreshing and introduces some interesting topics and debates.

Fantasy Island risks, transfers, captains, clean sheets etc - It would be nice if the individuals concerned researched it a bit more versus coming up with a random one on the spot.

4-5 is the right number of people on the scoutcast, I enjoy listening to each person's view. 2 or 3 narrows the topics and the debate

The biggest suggestion I have though is that it would be nice to have a regular segment with a manager who isn't doing as well (so may be someone who has done well historically but is having a shocker). You could spend a bit of time exploring the strategies that said manager is then employing to try and redress the situation. The majority of players/listeners aren't doing as well as you, so when Jonty was doing badly last season, it was much more interesting because he was having similar problems to a lot more people

Also, Jonty really needs to learn people's names :o)

And there should never be discussion on Christian Benteke or Andy Carroll!!!

Which one is best way to replace b.silva?
Son ? I like him but he gets subbed soon and now in rotation risk. Arnie ? Some difficult fixtures
Or take a hit to buy mahrez?
      Already have: salah walcott shaqiri

This kun explosion means I can't sell him for kane...but I need kane

Only option is a - 4 and lose firmino ( a gw 31 player) . Only have 5 currently and 2 don't start ( zeegs and Ox) for first time in my fpl career I am at a total loss .

      Anyone else in similar position

        I'm selling aguero

Firmino better fixtures and no blank coming up so he is nailed to my team. Lane better pick than kun over the next few

Hold the knee on Firmino mate. Lots of football to play before next GW (City play in three different competitions before they play in the league again), Jesus is back imminently and City's fixtures turn for the worse. Obviously they're fixture proof but I don't think you'd be captaining Aguero either considering Kane or Salah's corresponding fixtures.

It sounds madness but I'm considering selling Kun too. Maybe not this GW but definitely before 31, and for Firmino. I'll ride out the inevitable price rises first though!

Thanks for the in depth reply mate. You make good sence . It's scary losing him but the captaincy point is a good one.

Yeah I have Kane, with Wilson as my third striker. Kun will become Firmino soon, mainly thanks to GW31.

I've been looking through the teams in my ML after captaining Aguero and *falling* one spot. Kane, Salah and Sterling are among the usual suspects, but then there's variation; each manager opting for a differential in Aguero, Hazard, KdB or Sanchez.

From the moment Jesus limped off v Palace 7 weeks ago, Aguero was captainable. We've always bemoaned Pep's rotation of his strikers and here was the turning point; Aguero was now nailed. He hasn't failed as a captain since.

      GW19 Aguero(c) 32
      GW20 Aguero 2, Coutinho(c) 26
      GW21 Aguero 1, Richarlison(c) 10
      GW22 Aguero 6, Son(c) 24
      GW23 Aguero(c) 10
      GW24 Aguero(c) 34
      GW25 Aguero(c) 12
      GW26 Aguero 2, Sanchez(c) 10
      GW27 Aguero(c) 42
