Scout Notes – Salah Delivers

Liverpool’s star man is on the mark yet again to help offset some of the damage suffered by those without Sergio Aguero following his four-goal haul.

It wasn’t quite the 21 points produced by the Man City striker on Saturday, but Mohamed Salah’s goal, assist and two bonus in the Reds’ 2-0 win at Southampton was another good job well done by the prolific Egyptian.

Some 22.1% of Fantasy Premier League (FP) managers made him Gameweek 27’s most captained player and enjoyed a 13-point tally – the 12th double-figure performance of his stellar season – as a result.

Exactly half of FPL’s pre-Gameweek 27 top 100 managers were among those handing him the armband (Aguero was picked by 26), and Salah is now likely to receive similar backing for the foreseeable future.

Liverpool have three home matches, against West Ham, Newcastle and Watford, in the next four, with only Gameweek 30’s trip to Man United likely to dull his captaincy prospects.

Then again, Salah’s form is so irresistible – he’s produced attacking returns in 16 of his last 18 appearances – that even Old Trafford might not be able to tame him.

He set up Roberto Firmino’s opener at St Mary’s before the roles were reversed for the second goal, providing the 39% of managers on the Brazilian with 12 points as their man also took home maximum bonus.

A run of two goals in the previous six Gameweeks had persuaded 93,000+ to sell Firmino ahead of Saturday’s deadline, but he now has 12 goals for the season – his best ever league total – as he continues to do battle with Jamie Vardy for the mid-price forward slot. Surprisingly, however, Firmino still ranks fourth for sales so far ahead of Gameweek 28.

Liverpool defenders have been rather less prized assets this season, but today’s clean sheet made it two shut-outs from their last four matches, both of which have come away from home.

It was also the first clean sheet the Reds have kept with Virgil Van Dijk (5.5%) in the side.

The Dutchman will now be considered as the ideal replacement for Nicolas Otamendi, particularly if Man City’s FA Cup tie with Wigan goes to a replay, thus taking them out of the Gameweek 28 meeting with Arsenal. City will also miss Gameweek 31 should they progress past the Latics.

Liverpool have no such worries, their fourth round exit in the cup ensuring that Gameweek’s fixture against Watford will definitely go ahead.

In fact, the Reds’ lack of FA Cup duty should be a real boon for Fantasy managers, lessening the threat of rotation despite their upcoming Champions League commitments.

Gameweek 29’s visit from Newcastle might be the exception, however, coming as it does just three days before the second leg of their European tie against Porto, with the United match following that four days later.

The magnitude of the later two fixtures suggests that coach Jurgen Klopp will field his strongest possible sides in both, perhaps creating anxiety for that teamsheet against the Magpies.

Unholy times for Saints

Southampton’s 3-2 win at West Brom last week proved to be a blip and they’ve now won just twice in the league since Gameweek 13.

They did at least force Loris Karius into four saves today, helping the Liverpool stopper earn a bonus point, but both form and fixtures are stacked against them now.

The Saints will play just two of their next eight matches at home, and one of those is against Chelsea.

Four of their next five (STK new swa whu) involve relegation rivals and will likely decide their fate as the schedule turns rather spiteful from Gameweek 33.

All of that means their assets have little to no Fantasy appeal now.

James Ward-Prowse’s run of three goals and two assists from his previous four starts prompted more than 78,000 managers to draft him in this week.

The midfielder did at least put in a shift for his new owners, delivering three key passes and having two efforts on target – both team-leading figures on the day.

But his withdrawal on 70 minutes suggests his pitch-time could even be in doubt again, having played 90 mins in each of the last four matches.

Just to dimish the lure of their players further, Southampton will miss Gameweek 31 if either they, or their scheduled league opponents Swansea City, win in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.

The Saints travel to West Brom, while the Swans are also away, at Sheffield Wednesday.

    Hi All,

I was 100pts clear last month in my league not owning KdB and Aguero has now cost me I'm 60pts behind my rivals now. Ive played FH still got the rest. My question is there still hope knowing I don't own KDB and Aguero don't have FH for GW31?

I have 2 free transfers this week should I swap hazard for Mane or Kdb forget the blank. Use the other transfer next gw?

    Much help needed. Thank You!

Yeah, there's still hope. You just got unlucky with your transfers/captaincy.

Wouldn't bring in Mané - other than no blank, he's looked pretty off for a while. Potentially better options. Hard to say what the best moves are without seeing your team.

14 teams are projected to play in GW35.

Are you telling me that a Wildcard team for GW34 won't be able to get a decent team out for GW35?

Are we assuming all 15 players will be from those 3 fixtures that blank?

I don't think you need a free hit to deal with just 3 missing fixtures.

5 to 6 projected blanks in 31. You're feeding off scraps to get points from the remaining games. It's a barren wasteland. That screams free hit.

I think 3 projected blanks is much easier to deal with without a free hit.

I don't think it's fair to criticize him in this particular instance because I certainly - and I'm sure I'm in the vast majority - didn't expect the FA to cram the fixtures into the same GW as the cup final. They haven't done it in the past so that's why it was low probability. With hindsight it's World Cup related I guess so who knows, maybe they do it with other GWs too and cram fixtures in.

He made an incorrect assumption about matches clashing with the League Cup Final being unlikely to be rearranged to dates later in the same GW28 and got that one wrong - nobody's perfect - but his percentages for GW31 and GW34 are probably far more reliable.

I had always assumed that there was a good chance of them remaining in the same game-week, and never considered (as some planned to) using my Free Hit chip then.

One reason that they have not always remained in the same game-week in previous seasons is that the following mid-week has not always been free.

Someone with better knowledge of maths than me should crack this and offer the probability.

It's very unlikely that city have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that utd have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that cfc have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that Spurs have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that Arsenal have a fix in 31

However, It's not very unlikely that ONE of these teams have a fix in 31. My guess is that it's more likely than unlikely.

An upset in the cup and suddenly a pool of players not yet considered gets thrown in the mix. I believe everyone should shut the brain off and start planning when all the fixtures in 31 are settled. When you know more of who's playing and not, you can assess your own team and make judgements if a decent 31team, though FTs is attainable and logical leading up to the gw.

According to the odds in Ben Crellin's spreadsheet, the odds that Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenall ALL blank in GW31 is 45%. (calculated by multiplying the five individual percentages together)

Therefore, the probability that at least one of them will play in GW31 is 55%.

Every chance that at least one will play. Cupsets can happen!

Everyone that blanks in 35 will have also blanked in 31, correct? So that argument is worthless. 35 blanks are just for the 7th round of Fa Cup which means they were also in the 6th round and blank in 31.

Correction* obviously it's the teams playing against those still in the FA Cup that could change, but given that most of the big teams we care about are the ones who will still be in, it's the big players who will blank in 31 and 35 as well.

The projected number of blanks for 35 is 3.26. I don't need a free hit to deal with that.

5.74 projected blanks in 31 is much scarier.

You can do all the planning in the world and forfeit points in 28, 29 and 30 from the likes of Mahrez and Arnie only to end up with a Watford player who gets you 2 points in GW31. Is that 2 points really worth the opportunity cost in the 3 preceding gameweeks?

I do agree with you on 31 vs 35 because I don't want to bring in a load of rubbish and ditch a lot of good players for 31 so the FH seems more logical to me... but I haven't seen Ben's reasoning and want to do so before categorically disagreeing with him.

If most big teams progress as expected and blank in 31, there will be a much better pool of players to pick from in gw35, makes FH then more valuable imo

I wouldn't be so sure about Bournemouth and Wilson. Southampton could easily beat West Brom like they did last week.

            That leaves you with 5.

You still need 6 more doss players who are likely to get you 2 points each in 31.

On the money = forget free hit, forget getting 11 out, for week 31 I'd quite happily roll into the week with 6 or 7 players, but really you need these three as a basic starter
            - Salah
            - Firminho
            - Liv Defender
            - Maybe a walcott
            - Shaqiri

They already hve decent games and are in form - I'm more worried about getting the RIGHT 5 or 6 players in, but then I've already burnt my second wildcard..... so seems silly to waste my free hit on week 31 when even with a full 11 the points are unlikely to be massive.

yeah your talking so much sense. Im not even worrying about 31 players, and will use my free hit chip and go from there with the wildcard in hand, or the back pocket.

If 31 does end up being a barren wasteland, wouldn't using your FH then on a bunch of 2 pointers also be a waste? As opposed to using it on players from the 13.74 teams not projected to blank in 35?

            Fair point.

Bully from FF Surgery mooted the idea of using the FH in 38. Someone in his mini league did incredible things last season by wildcarding in 38. That could be the best use of the chip, which no one is talking about.

I think the fact that you can navigate out of the two BGW with using the WC on GW32 and the FH on GW35, is what is most appealing.

The unbalanced team you'll have come GW31 can be Wildcarded in GW32, and the team you'll need for GW35 will not affect your GW34 and 36 DGW teams.

I accept that there is a drawback on compromising on a few transfers leading up to GW31, but nothing too bad imo.

I am keeping my FH chip to use potentially in GW37 or 38. All depends of course on form and fixtures, but all to play for re a champions league spot and relegation battle, DGW37 may be a good time to use it.

Yeah I think ideally everyone should plan for a gameweek 35 free hit. The other benefit imo is flexibility. Planning for a gw31 free hit pretty much restricts you to using it that gameweek. If you plan for a gameweek 35 free hit you still have the flexibility to play the chip in gameweek 31 if things don't go to plan

Has any analysis been done on the longevity of the second WC? The first one is often used to get rid of early-season deadwood and this has a relatively long knock-on effect. But the second? Can a team be set up for the remainder of the season from (say) GW32 or is the second WC only really making a significant difference for a couple of weeks?

It really depends on the state of your squad.
A popular time to play the first one is around the second international break, at which point your squad is likely to still contain some early-season deadwood but a sufficient amount of information should be available about the current season's form of the players you are thinking of replacing them with.
If your squad is in really bad shape then you might benefit by playing your second wildcard early.
But if not, then it's probably better to use it to make the most of the DGWs.

A few years back, when only one wildcard was available, there used to be a divergence of opinion between those who like to play it early and those who preferred to save it for the late-season DGWs.
Both strategies had their successes and failures.

If you ignore 31 and use your FH you naturally already have many of the double game week players in 34 and don’t need to use your WC in 32?

This is a very subjective topic based on the number of players you have currently. I have 5 players at the moment while there are few who have just 1. I dont plan to make any transfers this week keeping 31 in mind. In 30, i plan to bring in 2 Everton players who have BRI which is a juicy fixture in itself. Then one more in 31 and i have 8 players playing that week.

Cant see much potential for Clean sheets that week apart from Liverpool so i feel those are 2 spots wasted that week.

This is a crucial point when planning for a FH in 35 which isnt being talked about. Also Kane Sterling Alonso are 4 players who i feel are gonna be in most teams till the end of the season and have a blank in 35 (based on probability). They cost 29m. I just cant see any way of utilizing this 29m in 31 when compared to 35 which so many more options.

Kane and Alonso will play against each other in 32. I'm definitely dropping them both if they have a blank in 31 and get them back on WC if needed. GW 32 is a good GW for pre WC punt: ARS-STO; MUN-SWA; EVE-MCI.

It’s seriously impossible to plan all this right now without knowing what fixtures will be and when.

Say for eg if Cheslea & United progress to the FA Cup Semis they will have a double in 34 but a blank in 35. You will probaly have 4-6 players from those teams if they have a double in 34 but all those players will have a blank in 35. With 1 or 2 transfer how will you field a starting 11 in GW35?

    13. Football Weekender
      • 7 Years

In think there’s a different angle to look at this from and that’s the small pool of players to choose from in GW31. Everyone will captain Salah, most will also own Firmino, Shaqiri, Walcott and possibly Van Dijk. So where’s the advantage in playing the FH? The other players you’re using it for will be mostly pure filler and punts.

So my argument (in addition to the obvious benefits of the “Boomerang Theory”) is there’s more advantage in playing it in GW35 due to the wider pool of players to choose from.

      1. Hotdogs for Tea

But if you are WCing in 36, 2 FT and a -4 hit in 35 will probably give you a similar team as the FH chip with a minimum of six fixtures?
Not much in it all imo 🙂

But the players you’ll remove for 35 you may want back in 37. Just personal opinion but I’d rather build a full squad for both the DGWs with a GW32/33 wildcard and just not worry about any Hokey Cokey in GW35 by way of the FH chip. I also just feel the small pool of players available in GW31 and everyone captaining Salah means that the chip isn’t being utilised to its full potential.

It’s good that others are using it differently though, that’s what makes the game interesting 🙂

I'm planning on not using my FH in 31 and this is my reasoning fwiw (not saying I'm right, just how I came to the decision)

      - with so many big teams likely to blank, I think 31 will be a low scoring week.

      - I think the main points scorers will be lpool, I already have 3 pool players plus Walcott and Shaq.

      - everyone will salah(c), I have Salah.

      - I have 4 gws and 5 transfers to plan a good team for gw31 whilst not ignoring the weeks between.

      - if o only get 8/9 players out i am confident the only difference between my team and someone who uses FH is

This is exactly my thinking as mentioned above. I just think if you cover the key players and captain Salah then there’s no need to play the FH.

As I sit here today, I have 3 players for 31 and 6 players for 35 (assuming worst case scenario). I am not inclined to ‘team up’ for 31.
By the time 35 comes around I really don’t think I need a FH, especially with 2 FT & -4 to play around with .... and then a WC to follow in 36.

But ... I think it is a marginal call on the best strategy for 31/35

The problem with free hitting in 31 rather than 35 (for those that have not yet wildcarded) is that it compromises your deployment of the wildcard in 32/33/34. Your wildcard will then have to take into account blanking players in 35, whereas if you have the FH available, you can forget about 35 and work on maximising the doubles in 34 and 37. As the wildcard is the most important chip we have available, any compromise to it should be avoided, IMO.

Someone with better knowledge of maths than me should crack this and offer the probability

It's very unlikely that city have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that utd have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that cfc have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that Spurs have a fix in 31
It's very unlikely that Arsenal have a fix in 31

      However,

It's not very unlikely that ONE of these teams have a fix in 31. My guess is that it's more likely than unlikely.

An upset in the cup and suddenly a pool of players not yet considered gets thrown in the mix. I believe everyone should shut the brain off and start planning when all the fixtures in 31 are settled. When you know more of who's playing and not, you can assess your own team and make judgements if a decent 31team, though FTs is attainable and logical leading up to the gw.

also, it might be a similar probability that 1 of those happens to the probability of none of them happening (1 likely event vs 5 "very" unlikely ones)

Agree, Wesmantooth. I responded to you above too: The probability that at least one of Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal plays in GW31 is 55% (according to Ben Crellin's odds).

my plans is to use free hit in gw31, TC in gw34, with our current squad and few transfers can deal the blank gw35, WC in gw36 and BB in gw37...

      - GW28 of last year was very much looking like GW31 of this year: Only 4 games were played with only LIV from top 6. I managed to get 62 (-8) points with 7 or 8 players and got a 44K GWRank (3rd highest of all year).

      - GW32 of last year was very much looking like GW35 of this year: Only 3 games were missing including 3 top 6 teams (ARS, TOT, CHE). I got 67 (-4) points with 11 players but got a 1,1M GWRank which turned into a red arrow that week.

      - According to FPL Discovery %38 of teams in top 10K already played their FH chip (%27 for overall). Assuming that 2/3 of remaining part will play in GW35 and rest in GW31, only %20-25 of teams will play FH in GW31 and they will have 3-4 more below-average players than the rest. So not playing your FH in GW31 should not harm your rankings if you can field 7-8 players.

      - Even if one of those 5 big teams does not fail in FA cup 5th round but only SOU beats WBA and BOU-WBA game comes back into the fixture of GW31, there would be 8-9 good candidates to bring points such as Salah, Firmino, VVD (versus Watford at home) Daniels/Francis, Ibe/Stanislas, Wilson (versus WBA at home), Shaqiri/CM, Walcott/Siggy (playing against each other). We already have at least 3-4 of those players and we can bring 3-4 more of them right before the GW31 deadline with 2 FT and -4/-8. And there are 3 more GWs in between to make further adjustments.

      - It is all about good planning but we should first see the 5th round games and QF draw. Above scenario + 1 surprise from top 6 teams would make it very clear for me to play it in the GW31. Even if it would be limited to the current two games and HUD-CPL (worst case scenario) who will you pick with your FH to fill those 4-5 places?

      - Fixture-wise,next 3 GW, CHE, MUN, MCI does not have good fixtures, ARS is still unclear to invest (for me) and only TOT players seem to have a good potential to bring points.

Although only having Salah, Firmino and 2 FT atm, I will try to get 7-8 starting GW31 players and play my FH in GW35. However, it can easily go wrong but at least I justified my decision with the above points. Good luck all!

If you save your Free Hit chip for GW35, you'll have a much bigger advantage if four Top 6 teams Blank in GW35.

If only two Top 6 teams Blank in GW35, it'll be pretty easy for the people who've already used their Free Hit to navigate DGW34, BGW35 and DGW37.

Wasting your FH on 2 extra players?

        1. Postman Ty
          • 9 Years
          6 years, 2 months ago

How on earth do you go about thinking it's a waste in the biggest blank GW of the season...?
2 extra players is basically best case scenario from teams who have already been working towards this, which I still firmly believe is a bad idea.
You're set on bringing in players for 4-5 weeks from mostly crap teams, limiting who you can bring in and hindered by uncertainty of who will even blank. Then you have to hold them at least another week until you WC.
How many points are you losing leading up to, and following, the blank by not using the FH?
This chip is designed specifically to avoid one week of chaos. The biggest blank of the season is when there will be the most chaos.
Using it in a random week is just a silly gamble which can actually lose you points.
Using it in 35 is the same but less useful because it's easier to get 11 players then.

Up to you. Not sure bringing in VVD or Walcott/Siggy and playing my bench players constitutes losing points. I will wildcard straight after 31 too so dont need to worry on that front either. As I say up to you mate. You seem set on that approach. Best of luck to you.

There are a reasonable amount of decent to good options opening up as you've mentioned with those lot. Planning from weeks ago though, most of those options were essentially non-existent, hence my planning to just play as normal and FH for the blank.
I just really don't see any 'better' week to use it for a variety of reasons.
Cheers, best wishes to you and your team.

is it me or does the obsession with the bgw seem ridiculous? people talking about keeping transfers to get bgw players or only getting in players who are definitely playing.
The majority of players being brought in wouldn't darken your team normally and are most likely to only get 2 bps. Also people talking about using their FH which woykd be much more profitable another week.

Lots of good-great options, and the people picking bad ones probably make bad decisions regularly.
Incorrect on average. FH in a random week is just a gamble, lots of people have lost points from it. FH in a blank absolutely guarantees more points.

He was the highest rated player on the pitch on the fotmob app. 16 out of 20 successful duels, 8/8 successful dribbles, 1 key pass, and admittedly 0 shots. But he was very active in the game.
