Scout Notes – Hazard Blows Baggies Away

Eden Hazard again provided the spark of brilliance for Chelsea, making his late contribution an extraordinarily high scoring Gameweek.

The Belgian fired two goals to double his tally in home matches this season, moving to 11 overall and six in the last six Gameweeks.

Owned by a modest 8.1%, Hazard was captained by just over 119,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. They went into Monday night’s clash desperate for him to produce in light of big returns from Sergio Aguero and Mohamed Salah and he duly obliged.

Olivier Giroud’s presence as the lone striker in Chelsea’s 3-4-2-1 proved significant. It was his lay-off that provided the assist for Hazard’s opener – a crisp strike into the bottom corner.

Giroud made his first start and lasted until 61 minutes until replaced by the fit-again Alvaro Morata.

Returning from a back injury far sooner than expected, the Spaniard provided the pass for Hazard’s second – a stunning finish from 20 yards.

Inevitably, Hazard went on to pick up the three bonus points – a seventh maximum of the season – to move to a total of 22.

Hazard has dropped in ownership in eight of the last nine Gameweeks, losing 419,000 managers over that period.

But even though he goes to Manchester United in Gameweek 28, with Manchester City to follow that, his current form and output makes it very difficult to dispose of his services.

The availability of Giroud and Morata are big factors, with Hazard looking far more menacing as a direct goal threat playing off a recognised striker.

It remains to be seen how that particularly pecking order forms, with Conte’s selection for Friday’s FA Cup tie with Hull City likely to offer clues. As it stands, it would be no surprise if Giroud remains in the starting XI.

Post-match, though, Conte’s thoughts on his strikers were mainly restricted to their lack of match sharpness:

“Morata missed one month with a pain in his back and I hope we’ve solved the situation.
For Giroud it’s the same, he’s coming from a muscular problem and for us it’s very important for him to go into our idea of football and understand the right positions, for example the first goal was a clear example of our idea.
Now it’s very important for him and Alvaro to play games, they need to find the best physical condition. Training is okay but games are better and more important.”

Alonso absent again

The night begun inauspiciously for Fantasy managers, with Marcos Alonso again missing out.

The wing-back was the most sold player heading into the Gameweek with 220,000 managers moving him out. However, there were still 1.3 million disappointed managers who were forced to turn to their bench to fill the void.

Alonso was sidelined with fatigue at Vicarage Road in Gameweek 26, but there were reports that the Spaniard had returned to training. However, Conte confirmed pre-match that he had suffered a twisted ankle in Saturday’s session.

With Chelsea’s next Gameweek action on Sunday February 25, Alonso should have the recovery time, and we will likely hear more on his situation in Conte’s press conference later this week.

In his absence, Davide Zappacosta lined up at left wing-back with Victor Moses on the right. It was the latter who produced on the night, scoring from a Cesc Fabregas deflected pass in between Hazard’s goals. It was Moses’ second goal in three starts.

He helped Chelsea keep their fourteenth clean sheet of the campaign, their seventh in ten Gameweeks. That provided a welcome reprieve for those still holding Andreas Christensen.

The Dane was again withdrawn early on 73 minutes, replaced by Gary Cahill, who dropped to the bench. But Christensen booked his clean sheet, a first since Gameweek 19 having missed out on shut-outs in Gameweeks 23 and 24 due to injuries that saw him depart short of the hour-mark.

Sturridge blow for Baggies

As for the Baggies, their plight remains perilous though their first-half performance will have given Alan Pardew some encouragement.

Daniel Sturridge’s injury after just two minutes is a major concern, particularly with Jay Rodriguez facing an FA charge that could see him suspended for a lengthy spell.

The Baggies boss is optimistic, though, that Sturridge’s latest injury setback will be a short one.

“We’re hoping it’s not too bad. We don’t think it’s a tear or anything. It might keep him out of the FA Cup (match against Southampton on Saturday), but he could be back in a couple of weeks.

In Fantasy terms, West Brom continue to offer slim pickings, though should they go out of the FA Cup to Southampton, their Gameweek 31 fixture with Bournemouth would make them a more attractive proposition.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Was actually planning to do Alonso > Davies and Kun > Kane, with Son already in the team so can't afford to have Eriksen. Or if I prefer Davies Eriksen and Kane from Spurs, who should I replace Son with? Arnie? Shaq? Mahrez?

If you have no WC left, but other chips intact, would you forget about planning for GW31 with players like Shaq, Doucoure, Walcott etc and instead, just focus on the bigger teams for the DGWs and use my free hit in 31?

I don't want to be lumbered with players from Watford, Stoke etc that I'll have to use transfers to remove.

Let’s face it, there is likely to be one big upset in the Cup which would have a big impact on GW31 and Free Hit planning. Ben Crellin can spreadsheet himself until he’s blue in the face but you cannot predict the cup and that’s the beauty of it.

For example Huddersfield to beat United? This would mean West Ham v United going ahead in GW31 which would open up some interesting options.

The implied probability on Crelin's sheet predicts an upset. Currently projects 4.26 games to go ahead. Crellin's just doing the work for you so you're aware of possible outcomes, and the likely overall impact. He's not predicting anything himself; he's just giving you odds.

Agreed, and I'm not having a go at Ben Crellin, I really like what he does.

My point is, let's say for example Man City suddenly have a game in GW31. That is going to massively change everyone's plans. So really no point in discussing Free Hits until after this weekend.

      Retweet - FPL Holly

Plenty of injuries & suspensions could happen before GW28:

      - 10 teams play in the FA Cup
      - Top 5 have a UCL fixture
      - Arsenal play twice in Europa league
      - GW31 blanks should be confirmed

Be patient! Hold onto those transfers!

Is Firmino essential? In my opinion I can't see him keeping up his form and there are a number of reasons why.

      1. During CL season Firmino seems to have a dip in form. When the group stages were taking place from GW4 - 17 Firmino only managed 3 goals and 1 assist. Since the group stages have finished from GW 17 - 28 he has managed 7 goals and 4 assists. That's is a massive increase in 2 less gameweeeks. This would make sense considering Firmino would be rotated and played on the wing more often which ruins his appeal. Pools focus would also shift to the CL and they would be more tired on the weekends. With Klopps demanding pressing game and tired players this can be a recipe for disaster. I would also expect Liverpool to progress to the last 8 being the biased fan I am. I would be surprised to see us lose to Porto. Also the way we play suits the CL as teams play more attacking leaving space for the counter.

      2. His short term fixtures aren't very appealing. Since Moyes has taken over these are West Ham's results against the top 6
      City - Lost 2-1
      Chelsea - Won 1-0
      Arsenal - Drew 0-0
      Spurs - Drew 1-1
These results are because they sit back and defend superbly while having a threat on the counter and from set-pieces. I can see them causing Liverpool a major problem. Newcastle and Utd will also sit back deep and Liverpool really struggle in these situations.

Sorry for this extremely long post and I'm not suggesting you sell him or stay away - It's up to you but this is MY opinion. What's your thoughts on this?

        1) Literally no other options in the 6-10m brackets (except Vardy)
        2) Plays a guaranteed game in GW31
        3) In form and a good Liv cover, as everyone owns Salah

You don't need 3 up top with all the firing mids at the moment and a Kane-Auba partnership could work. Also why ignore Vardy? If you have FH you can play that in GW31 and therefore you wouldn't want people with a game as they don't double in GW35. The last point you're right however as there isn't any other options with Manes form.

Exactly. You dont want to overspend in attack so you can afford the mids.

Personal choice of course, but I am convinced that GW35 is the better week to FH (subject to no/max 1 upset in FA cup this weekend).

            So Firmino stays.

I just have enough of this game. I don't know what I am doing wrong... Hoovering around 100k from the GW1 and everytime I think now I can break higher, I go up to around 50k and then two bad gameweeks and I'm 150k. Was 50k two GWs ago, then back to 110k and disastrous 210k after this GW. Of course Kane could have easily had 2 goals vs Arsenal, 2 or 3 goals against Liverpool, but no, who is overperforming his xG? Of course Aguero, Firmino, Hazard, players I don't have. If I had gone for Shaquiri instead of Choupo two weeks ago I would have 15 points more... And those goalkeepers... I had two cleen sheets from them all season, If a monkey choose also 2 of them, it would have more CS'.

Sorry for all this moaning, but I just had to get this out from me.

I know, it's not that bad and I will go up during blank and double GWs but I was 100k before this GW and I was also 200k in GW3. I know I should't be saying that when a lot of folks better than me are lower, but this lack of progress is really dampening.

I've had miles worse luck than that this season 🙂
FWIW, Choupo is just a shocking pick full stop - anyone who still owns him deserves to be 500k +

5k here and own Choupo 🙂 🙂 It's true I got him three weeks ago as I couldn't reach Shaqiri but he's gone for me, no blank in GW31 won't save the fecker from leaving my team. 🙂

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking getting him. Sold some time ago, and got back to this crap player. But Shaqiri isn't much better either in my opinion. Anyway, wish you good luck for the rest of the season 😛

      Alonso* Jones* VVD Mee

And I need a bit of help on what to do here:
      A) Alonso/Jones ➡ Spurs defender (Chelsea and ManU fixtures are turning to bad the next few GWs while Spurs fixtures are superb and they showed good performance.)
      B) Alonso and Mee ➡ Davies and Mawson
      C) Save
      D) Any other idea?

I think I'm_Awesome means that sometimes you click on an FPL team link and it doesn't take you to the right place.

I know for me I often end up staring and laughing at my own team before realising that it's not the team I was expecting to see from clicking on someone else's link.

55 pts and a drop from 13K to 37k OR. Rivals passed me up in ML's. TV dropped.....To say GW 27 was a let down is an understatement 🙁

We'll keep ploughing on though to try and reel back in my rivals.

      Hennessy Speroni*
      Alonso* Otamendi Mee Gomez* Daniels
      Salah Sterling Lingard B.Silva Walcott
      Kane Firmino Wilson

Any thoughts on the best use of my 2FT (0.1m ITB)? Have a few issues. Thinking Lingard out to bench fodder and upgrade elsewhere. Thoughts?
