Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 28

With Premier League action resuming this weekend, we have launched our latest Captain Poll to canvass your views on the best armband options for Gameweek 28.

Leader of the Gameweek 27 poll, Mohamed Salah (10.4) is likely to dominate voting once again as Liverpool host a West Ham side with just one clean sheet from their last nine league run outs.

The Egyptian’s goal in last week’s 5-0 Champions League rout of Porto last week was his 30th in all competitions this season.

Salah has already bagged 15 points away to the Hammers in Gameweek 11, while seven of his 12 sets of double-figure returns have arrived at Anfield.

Furthermore, he remains the most consistent captaincy option around, with attacking returns in all but two of his last 18 league appearances.

Roberto Firmino (9.2), who also scored against the Portuguese side last time out, is another reliable option. The Brazilian has three goals and a pair of assists in his last five league starts.

Yet at home, he has been involved in just under a third (30%) of his side’s goals, compared with Salah’s impressive 62%.

Sadio Mane (9.3)’s hat-trick against Porto could see the Senegalese winger garner support, even though he last scored in the league in Gameweek 23.

Mane has managed double-digit returns just twice this season, though encouragingly for his owners, one of those arrived in that trip to the London Stadium.

Away to a Crystal Palace outfit that has shipped nine goals in the last four Gameweeks, Harry Kane (12.8) cannot be overlooked.

His goal from the spot against Rochdale in the FA Cup on Sunday was his fourth in his last five matches in all competitions. Away from home, Kane is the top-ranked player for goals (12), attempts (55), penalty area efforts (37) and shots on target (21). Indeed, four of his eight sets of 10+ points hauls have been recorded on the road.

Kane has also found the net in two of his three league visits to Selhurst Park.

Surprisingly, he is currently the most sold striker with 47,000 Fantasy Premier League managers ditching him ahead of Gameweek 28.

Christian Eriksen (9.2) – who joined Kane on the scoresheet in the 2-2 away draw with Juventus in the Champions League – offers an in-form alternative. The Dane has two goals and as many assists in his last four league outings.

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy (8.6) has upped his consistency of late; the Foxes frontman has scored in each of his last four league matches and also fired the only goal in Friday’s FA Cup win over Sheffield United.

Vardy hosts the Premier League’s worst away side, Stoke City, at the King Power Stadium this weekend. The Potters have shipped a league-high 32 goals and kept just one clean sheet on their travels. That includes five goals in two away outings under new manager Paul Lambert.

Vardy’s team-mate Riyad Mahrez (8.6) may also gather votes after making his return to the fold. The Algerian – who set up Vardy’s goal against the Blades on Saturday – has delivered a goal or assist in nine of his last 11 league starts.

Bournemouth’s Callum Wilson is another in-form frontman, handed a new lease of life in Fantasy terms by the fact that he could now feature in Gameweek 31. Before that, he enjoys a home fixture with a Newcastle United defence with just one clean sheet from their last 11 away matches. The Cherries’ striker has served up 12 points against both Arsenal and Chelsea in the previous five Gameweeks.

Manchester United’s home clash with Chelsea on Sunday may mute interest in assets from both camps. However, with four goals in his last three road trips, Blues playmaker Eden Hazard (10.7) could yet prove to be a shrewd alternative captaincy pick.

Arsenal’s home clash with Manchester City also looks hard to call, but their respective home and away form suggests this could be a high-scoring encounter.

On the road Pep Guardiola’s men have netted 29 goals, a tally only Liverpool can beat (34). However, the Sky Blues last kept a clean sheet on the road back in Gameweek 21, against Crystal Palace.

In front of their own fans, the Gunners have notched 36 times, which is second only to City (50). However, over their last four home matches, Arsene Wenger’s troops have failed to keep a clean sheet and shipped seven goals.

For the visitors Sergio Aguero (12.0) looks the stand-out selection, with six goals and two assists in his seven away starts. The Argentine is currently the most popular striker in FPL’s transfer market, with 119,000 managers swooping to acquire his services.

Both Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne were on the scoresheet against the Gunners back in Gameweek 11 – the Belgian’s 10-point haul was one of eight double-figure hauls this season.

Among the hosts’ assets, recent recruit Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (10.5) could prosper after scoring on his debut, at home to Everton, in Gameweek 26. In that encounter, another new Arsenal face Henrikh Mkhitaryan (7.8) also impressed, with a hat-trick of assists, which could see him earn support.

Mesut Ozil (9.3) is another intriguing captaincy candidate with three goals and four assists in his last seven Emirates encounters.

However, it is worth mentioning that if tonight’s FA Cup tie between Manchester City and Wigan goes to a replay, then their trip to the Emirates Stadium will be postponed.

Everton’s Theo Walcott (7.3) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (8.0) are among the other armband differentials. They face an away trip to face a Watford defence with the worst home record, conceding 26 goals in front of their own fans.

Sigurdsson’s goal and assist in his last league run out, at home to Crystal Palace, served as a reminder of his potential, while Walcott’s two successful strikes and one assist in his four Toffees’ starts has also impressed.

The poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

Remember, we are looking for your vote for the player you think will be most effective, regardless of whether you own them or not.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of the Gameweek 28 deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Not sure about that unless he really starts firing as Firmino has Bournemouth gw34 and it would require a downgrade of a player I'm not willing to downgrade e.g. Salah, Sterling, Eriksen or two downgrades elsewhere

    GW29: Dunk > Daniels*
    GW30/31: Ogbonna > Schindler*

    Current team [0FT, 0.5M ITB]:

    DDG [Elliot]
    VVD* Maguire Long [Dunk Ogbonna]
    Hazard Salah* Sterling Walcott* Shaqiri*
    Kane Firmino* [Quaner*]

    * BGW31 players: after those 2 moves [exact cash to do them, btw], 8 players total in the end. Is it a good plan? I'd appreciate any suggestions. Cheers!

The idea is to use my FH chip @BGW35, simply because BGW31 fixtures are so rubish imo.

    Bottomed..

    Foster
    Hegazi - Jones - Mee
    Salah - Sterling - Lingard - Shaqiri
    Kane - Agüero - Firmino

    Bench: Elliot, Otamendi, Carroll, Ogbonna.

    2FT, 0.1M ITB.

Want to get in VVD for Otamendi, but that only leaves me 0.7M ITB to use on replacement for Lingard (6.8M). Struggling to find a good option to replace him with that also has a fixture in 31..

Planning to save my free chip on GW31 and will start gearing up towards gw31 immediately.

On that basis, I suspect it makes sense to go
OTA + LINGARD -> MANE + JAANMAT right?

I already have firmino and salah but Liverpool has hands down the best fixtures and Mane is a much stronger differentiator than VVD.

    1. OldBenKenobi

Why Jaanmat? They play against pool on GW31. Wouldn’t invest in their defence. Better beat would be BOU or HUD imo

Sanchez owners, are we sticking by him?
Despite MUN being poor of late, I like the next three fixtures myself for Sanchez returns:
Home to CHE who may have a CL hangover, then Palace away and home to LIV which should be an open affair.
Getting in Eriksen or Mahrez (and banking the funds) for him is tempting me but I think I'll hold onto to him and might even give him the armband over the weekend (as I don't see Moses/Zap containing him)!

Nope, he's had 3 games to proven himself at 11.7 and hasn't done so. Not so say the underlying statistics haven't been bad but the end result...POINTS! Two no returns, just doesn't bode well for me and I don't think we have enough time to watch the Sanchez Experiment get rolling. It appears there might be some chemistry problems the squad is working through as well.

As for what to do with him. I am shipping him, that I know of. Not sure I am going with 2 premium forwards to pair with Kane or one premium midfielder and one premium forward.I like the Mahrez shout, but would want to move Albrighton as I have him as my fifth. Up front, it will be Firmino and possibly Aubameyang after GW28

Yeah fair enough, he has let my wildcard (when going with power mids) down pretty badly! Last week all of my mids bar Alexis scored double digits. I still feel the next three are good fixtures for him so will see how Sanchez(C) goes this weekend!
My horrible rank and lack of mini league interest allows for an experimental approach for the rest of the season 😉

I have seen lots of guys on here over the years that are great with stats but has anyone ever worked out how many different squads that could be picked within the rules?

It must be a humongous number.

I just looked at Arsenal (26 players) when trying to work it out using a permutation calculator but i came unstuck when i thought that i could have only 2 goalkeepers in any combination.

It might not be that bad just to work it out excluding GKs but the answer would be wrong.

I was kinda inspired about this after learning about the Shannon number.

Planning to use FH in GW 31.

Alonso -> Maguire has been done,
However, which 1 out of these 2 Leicester players should I get in either a -8 move this week or spreading it through 2 weeks for a -4

    1) Mahrez (Take out Choupo and downgrade Ayew to 4.5m)
    2) Vardy (Upgrade Ayew and downgrade Choupo to 4.5m)

A: Hazard (mun) out for Mane (WHU) save 2nd ft
B: RLC & Aguero (ars) out for Mane & Wilson (NEW) (bench shaq or Ibe)

B depending on your other two strikers (Kane and Firmino I'd guess which be fine). Bench Ibe as Shaq has form and it would hurt you more if he did something and you benched him

You still own Richarlison! Watford is still a mess with Gracia now in place. Deulofeu was a nice spark to the squad, but I see him benefiting Doucoure. Two good players on the wings sending balls in. I would (and did) move Richarilson weeks ago.

OK so here’s my plan (No WC)

    GW28 Pogba > Walcott
    GW29 Dummett > Francis
    GW 30 Elliot > Hennessy

Gives me 10 for GW31 without comprising my main 11.

    DDG, Hennessy
    Alonso, Otamendi, VVD, Bauer, Francis
    Salah, Sterling, Walcott, Shaqiri, Ibe
    Kane, Firmino, Wilson

    1.3ITB

GW32 onwards get DGW players in
BB GW34 or if fixtures fall nicely for bench.
    FH GW35

Already splunked my TC on Kane for 3 points 🙁

    Solid?

Might take a hit or towo but I’m not too worried about getting my bench full of DGWs - really only a luxury for WC holders.
I could easily get most of my main 11 playing DGWs without too much hassle

After having a good think about it--- without having a wildcard left, the choice between the GW31 and GW35 FHC strategies is very tough. I feel like it's pretty equal between them. I'm pretty stuck.

I was edging towards playing the FHC in GW31, but after Saturday's results, I have 8 non-blanking players already in my team which suggests I would be silly to do so but on the other hand, I would be pretty un-prepared for the DGW34...

    1. OldBenKenobi
      • 7 Years

Yes I would keep your FH for Later. My post above yours is my plan to tackle GW31 without a WC

I think 8 is enough for GW31. I'd start prepping for DGW34 now and save the FH for GW35. Lots of players with good short term fixtures as well as a double in 34 (Spurs, Arsenal, Leicester especially).

That's unlikely. Most likely a DGW in GW30 for City and Brighton will take place, just like last season.

Leicester - Southampton or Swansea - Southampton could become a 4th DGW if Leicester get to the semi finals.

The likely set up would be: DGW34: Arsenal - City, Swansea - Southampton | DGW37 City - Swansea, Arsenal - Leicester.

As you can see, Leicester - Southampton can only be played in place of Swansea - Southampton or as a standalone DGW.
