Sky Sports Focus

We now switch focus to the Sky Sports game and our Focus article which looks back at the previous round of matches before preparing you for the incoming Gameweek.

As always, we’ll examine the recent run of Man of the Match (MoTM) awards, the bonus point beneficiaries and the transfer trends, before moving on to the Scout team and our plans.

Gameweek 27 Man of the Match Awards

These were the players who convinced the Sky Sports reporters with their performances, earning an extra five points in the process.

A high-scoring week for most, with many of the game’s most popular captain choices returning substantial points.

Harry Kane and Sergio Aguero both went big on Saturday, followed by Mohamed Salah on Sunday and then Eden Hazard on Monday night – the stuff of dreams.

It’s exactly this kind of scenario that strikes fear into Fantasy managers who dare to go without the big guns with their Overhaul.

Talking of which, in case you missed our earlier article, you can find my guide to the Sky Sports Overhaul period here.

Gameweek 27 Bonus Points

Let’s take a look at any player to earn 40 points or more in bonus for the season.

Notes

Let me stress that my team is by no means set in stone. Like many Sky Sports managers, I’m constantly tinkering, but right now I’m sat with the above XI.

My season-goal of finishing inside the top 100 is certainly within reach and I’m confident I could achieve that by playing safe.

However, I would like to push to the top 25 or so and win some of my mini-leagues, so I’m happy to go down a slightly riskier route.

Of the top five transfers-in (above), I only have Roberto Firmino, so I am already going against the grain somewhat.

On to my team, then.

I’m going to briefly talk you through the rationale behind my choices and then highlight some other options who might yet still make the cut.

Kane, Kevin De Bruyne and Salah are immovable as far as I’m concerned – they are simply too well-owned and too consistent and explosive to overlook.

Firmino is in due to fantastic form, fixtures and a match in Gameweek 32. After that I may reassess, but for now he’s close to nailed-on for me.

Likewise, Loris Karius looks to be extremely good value – if Liverpool can keep churning out clean sheets. I have strongly considered Alex McCarthy for the money saved, but clean sheets are the bread and butter for keepers and it’s difficult to see Southampton improving in that respect, given their run of away fixtures.

Mike Van der Horn is a player I think most of the top 100 will gravitate towards. Budget picks are required and he looks to be the best of the bunch right now. He is pretty much a necessary “essential” for me.

I have considered going for Jonjoe Kenny, for even more of a saving, and hoping he gets matches. But I could easily leave myself with 10 starters and no money in the bank to rectify if it goes wrong, so I’ll bid to avoid that headache.

A Stephen Ward and James Tarkowski double-up is a risk, I accept that. Both have been injured for a while and Burnley shut-outs have dried up. I’m simply hoping the return of these two, and a nice set of fixtures, coincides with more clean sheets.

If it works, it’s a very cheap price to pay for hopefully decent returns. And if it doesn’t, then I could look at the more template option of Joe Gomez or Andreas Christensen in the future.

Christen Eriksen and Mesut Ozil are in there as differentials. Both have good fixtures and play in teams who can score goals.

I have considered the likes of Riyad Mahrez and Theo Walcott, but feel I can’t quite trust them (or perhaps their teams) to perform as much as I can the other two. Raheem Sterling is another I perhaps should just stick with, but it feels too much of a template player. I have no doubt he will continue to be a good pick, however.

That just leaves Andrew Robertson, who I am least confident about. He’s in there to exploit Liverpool’s fixtures at present, but I have also looked at Ben Davies, Phil Jones and even downgrading Ozil to Aaron Ramsey and swapping that slot to a 10.3 midfielder or less. In truth, I’m still undecided at this stage.

My biggest worry about this XI is the lack of variety from different teams. No doubt there will be many single matchdays towards the latter part of the season, and I currently sit with no Chelsea or Man United coverage.

In fact, I only have seven of 20 teams represented.

However, I have been guilty in the past of planning too far ahead, so I want to pick a team more geared to the immediate future and go from there.

I’m confident that, with nine transfers remaining, I can address this issue as and when required, rather than miss out on points in the meantime.

Please feel free to comment below on my team and your plans – you can also find me on twitter @d1sable if you want to trade ideas.

Sat 24th – Salah (WHU)
Sun 25th – Kane (cry)
Thurs 1st – De Bruyne (ars)

Over the 2 week break from FPL, I’ve been reviewing the expected goals data on understat.com, and it makes for some interesting reading, with a small number of headline outcomes.

(It's worth a reminder at this point that for the best teams with the best players they will often outperform their expected goals scored, simply because an expected goal is based on what an “average” player in that position would do. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/40699431 A finisher such as Harry Kane is obviously better than average, consequently he will frequently outperform his expected goals statistic.)

The first thing that struck me was the poor defensive performance of Manchester United, their expected points (xPTS) are 9 fewer than what they actually have, mostly because their expected goals conceded (xGA) is a mammoth 13 higher than the amount they have actually let in. The league's best defence is, based on xGA, only 5th best. I think this reaffirms just how critical DDG is to them.

Another team in a fortuitous position is Burnley. An excellent article published on statsbomb (https://statsbomb.com/2017/12/on-burnley-and-expected-goals/) on December 1st, highlighted how at the time Burnley were outperforming their xGA data, and insinuated that regression to the mean was likely. This has indeed come to pass (possibly aided by injuries to their backline) and Burnley are without a win in 11 games. However, what surprised me is the difference in the actual and expected data even now. Burnley have an xGA 14 higher than their actual goals against total, and their xG total of 19 is the lowest in the entire league. Putting this together, Burnley “should” be bottom of the league with just 24 points!

Huddersfield have the second worst defence in the league (47 conceded), however according to xGA, theirs is the 10th strongest, with an xGA of 37.

Finally, Crystal Palace fans can count themselves very unfortunate to be in a relegation battle. Their xG total is 14 higher than reality, perhaps highlighting the profligate finishing of Christian Benteke. Their expected points total would be good for 7th in the league.

Summary and considerations for the rest of the season

I would avoid defensive investment in Manchester United barring De Gea
I would avoid all investment in Burnley
Huddersfield defence may be good value from GW30-GW34
Crystal Palace attack could offer value from GW31-GW38, particularly useful for those planning long term investment who may have fewer chips available. This is pretty dependent on Benteke hitting a purple patch though, so keep tabs on him.

Yeah Burnley are a funny one to analyse really, as they stopped keeping clean sheets around the time their fixtures turned and they started to pick up defensive injuries, so that could be a contributing factor also.

Bobby Gardiner had a similar piece on The Ringer today - essentially highlighting how de Gea has been the difference between a league-leading and a league-average defence. Burnley and Swansea were also highlighted as sides whose keepers have kept them afloat despite poor defensive play overall.

West Ham have had the worst showing of all PL sides from the GK position - conceding 15% more goals than expected. Interestingly, Man City rank 3rd from bottom - by his numbers (a more complex xG that accounts also for the actually quality of each shot itself, as well as its location) Ederson hasn't quite been as good as the hype around him suggests.

Thank you for the link to the article, a fascinating read! (And pleased to see it backs up what I was saying haha). Would be interesting to see if West Ham's xGA picked up after Hart was dropped for Adrian, or if its the defence as a whole that is to blame, or indeed if Moyes has bought about an improvement since Bilic.

I guess as far as City are concerned anyone is an upgade on Bravo!

In an age of 24 hour sports news and channels tailored for specific sports i think they should have some kind of press the red button option to watch the pressers live or at a time of your choosing.

The little snippets they show on SSN just dont cut it and sometimes they are trying to push some kinda of narrative that i dont give a shite about.

Butland or Pickford until GW31? And why? Pickford has better fixtures but Stoke have been vastly superior defensively.

Its a difficult one - personally I don't really fancy either Mahrez or Mane. I'd rather have Vardy or Firmino, which means also dropping one of Kun or Wilson for a -4...

    Salah - Sterling - Mkhitaryan - Son

Should I get Mahrez, and for whom?

Do we reckon Trippier gets all 3 league games with Aurier getting Rochdale and then Juventus again?

Aurier is banner for Juve so Trippier will miss HUD or bou.

    DRAFT QUESTION:
Is this the best starring 11 and bench for this week? Who would you drop to the bench if Not?

    Karius
    Alonso - Sanchez - Robertson
    Hazard - KDB - Sigurdsson - Son
    Auba - Wilson - Vardy

    Cech - Walcott - Alder - Moses

Why have walcott if you're gonna bench him?

    Pick
    Ota / Duffy / VVD
    Son / Salah / Deulofeu / Mahrez
    Kun / Kane / Wilson
    (Elliot, Choupo, Christensen, Kiko)

    Yay 🙂 or nay 🙁 ?

    Could do with some advice:

    DDG / Elliot
    Kenny / Alonso / Duffy / Otamendi / Ogbonna
    Chamberlain / Salah / Sterling / Mkhi / Walcott
    Aguero / Firmino / Wilson

    Aguero + Otamendi --> Kane + Daniels/Mee? for a -4

    Or any other suggestions??

Ibe or Stanislas - which one is a better route to Bournemouth midfield? Want to get the latter, but he has been subbed off (around 60-ish minute) more often than Ibe, which annoys me.
