Fantasy Eliteserien: 2018 Season Preview – Part 1

It is finally back. Last year the Norwegian top flight got it’s very own Fantasy game, and given its spring to autumn season it dovetailed nicely with the Fantasy Premier League game we know and love.

With more than 500 FFScout teams taking part, last season’s inaugural Fantasy Eliteserien proved to be a surprise success story among the community.

Ahead of next season’s launch on 10 March, MrKlin and Niemi have teamed up to guide you through the forthcoming campaign.

The Norwegian language version of the game can be found here here. This season the game’s creators have developed an English language version, which can be found here.

It is also worth checking out how last season panned out in this article –  Fantasy Eliteserien – Season Review.

The Game

The game itself comes from the same creators as FPL, and as such the game is very familiar to us all. The main differences are man-in-the-stand bonus points and the chips in play.

The Norwegian Eliteserien offers us players from 16 teams to choose from across a 30 Gameweek campaign, from March to late November.

The “man-in-the-stand” bonus will be familiar with FPL veterans and boils down to the commentators for the game handing out bonus-points as they see fit from the game performance.

In theory this could help some of the “invisible” players in a game, like the defensive midfielders and other overlooked workhorses, but in reality you’ll notice little difference to who gets points in FPL – other than not being able to predict it accurately before they are actually given.

This season they have added chips to the game as well, which are different from those used in FPL.

The Fantasy Eliteserien chips are:

“Parkere Bussen” – Literal translation “Parking the Buss” – essentially a captaincy on the entire defence (double points on all defenders)

“Spissrush” – Striker rush – double points on all strikers

“To kapteiner” – Two captains – Get your captain-points from both the captain and vice captain

Key Players

Being a mid-to-low level league in Europe, the trend is that the best players will be sold on. As such there are not too many stand-out stars that are a guaranteed must from season to season.

Despite this, there are some familiar old stagers who are excelling in Eliteserien  – most notably former Arsenal striker Niklas Bendtner. Now of last season’s champions Rosenborg the Dane was last season’s top goalscorer. The smart money is on him gracing at least half of all teams at the start of the new campaign.

Other notable names from last season that are still available in the league are the likes of Eirik Ulland Andersen, Basel Jradi, Gilbert Koomson, Torgil Gjertsen, Fredrik Haugen and Samuel Adegbenro.

On the flip-side, notable names from last season who do not figure again now are Krepin Diatta (Club Brügge), Milan Jevtovic (Antalyaspor), Carlos Grossmüller (Club Universitario de Deportes), Björn Bergman Sigurdarsson (Rostov) and Sigurd Rosted (KAA Gent).

This turnaround forces Eliteserien managers to find the new gems each season, and makes it all the more important to stay on top of emerging form and hype-trains – something the FFS community did admirably at last season.

It is also worth noting that the Norwegian transfer window is open until April 4th, so internal transfers in the league, as well as signings from foreign clubs, can still happen long after the Gameweeks start rolling in.

Coming Up

Moving closer to season start, we will publish part two of our 2018 Eliteserien preview – offering more detailed insight into the teams and the key  players to target, as well as those to avoid.

FFScout Competitions

As mentioned, FFSscout had a decent presence in the game last season, and we are hoping for a return of our three main leagues also this season. More details about these will be announced in due course.

Thanks for this - great to see Bendtner be the success he always thought he'd be 🙂

And well done for helping make this such a success story last season.

Right, a rundown of the chips this season for you as well:
"Parkere Bussen" - Literal translation "Parking the Buss" - essentially a captaincy on the entire defence (double points on all defenders)
"Spissrush" - Striker rush - double points on all strikers
"To kapteiner" - Two captains - Get your captain-points from both the captain and vice captain

A bit simple setup, but not too shabby anyways.

Nice. Prefer them to FPL chips tbh. Simple and sweet.

really interested to see what FPL managers think of them. Seem really simple and potentially lucrative.

I've sendt the admins a question as I'm curious to know if the first 2 boost with the captaincy or not.... imagine that if there is actually a hidden quadruple-captain with extra captains in the pot there..... hope they've thought of that...

ok, after some checking we've confirmed there is NO captain in play when using the spissrush or parkere bussen chips, the C/VC option disappear as soon as you activate the chip.

          That changes a lot!

I was pondering these chips, and was thinking that you're essentially getting a quadruple captain striker, plus two captains, in one week. Similarly, a quadruple captain defender, plus four captain defenders, in one week.

Could really make or break your season. I think I like it better now that it's confirmed that captaincy is turned off when these chips are in play.

Is it fair to assume benched players don't count? ie. you have to field 5 defenders for Parkere Bussen

That is correct, this much they have confirmed.... good question, thanks..

Just registered again for the jokes, played last season and gave up halfway through despite some fun times, getting jammy when I picked Stokke because somebody on here was friends with him in real life.

So, to kick off the new season, RMT? 😛 😉

Playing a 5 3 2 for the heck of it

    Hansen
    Ruud Parr Gabrielsen Wormgoor Skjerve
Jradi Koomson Brochmann (remember hating having this guy in my team but don't remember why)
    Bendtner (of course) Lehne Olsen
Jonsson | Sodlund Helmersen (promoted rando who I have no idea if they will play or not) Vetlesen.

    Any essentials I'm missing?

Not bad at all for a first draft, jury is well out on Ruud as he is getting on a bit in age, think the bench is where you are most prone to need tweaks, but it's not bad at all....

Early comments: Helmersen is a Rosenborg youngster loaned out to newly promoted Ranheim. He'll be competing with cult hero Michael Karlsen for the striker position there, so not at all a sure starter, but may get gametime. Other than that you are hitting all the key points, Rosenborg off. player, Strømsgodset double, Koomson in Brann, Gabrielsen for the Molde defence....

Thanks Mrklin 🙂 Been looking into the rule Jesus/Aguero parallel with Bendtner and Soderlund and think I'll just go for Adegbenro instead now. Will probably have to wait for those inevitable midpriced bargains before making any real good drafts as it is.

I didn’t play this last season. And I am coming into this with no knowledge of the league.

An hour ago, I couldn’t have named a single team with confidence, nevermind tell you who won it last season. I couldn’t have named a single player, didn’t even know that this was where Bendtner was playing his football.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to give this a good go, but has no knowledge of the league, its teams or players? Have you been in the same boat, either with Eliteserien, or even another league (maybe you only know the Premier League because of FPL)?

Pick the players everyone else seems to pick. Have a really good bench, you'll need it most weeks. Bandwagons are very very random, and the game changes a lot all the time in terms of picks. Form is generally ephemeral. It's harder than FPL for sure, but great fun.

We will be coming with part 2, 3 and 4 where we give a good account of the teams. As I'm from this country and well versed in the league I'm not the right to say, but my impression is that our articles last season helped most any FFS pundit do alright last season, your knowledge of the FPL workings is a big boon as the base game is the same.

Same for me last season - somehow finished 90th. You'll get the hang of it quickly, and a friendly community for info & questions. Have to rely more on stats, discussion - unless up for watching games/highlights (by the end I was even spending a weekend evening watching two eliteserien games - if someone had suggested that at the start I wouldn't have believed it).

Yeah as above, you need a playing bench.

True. Could be the same with Mos/Pedersen - will have to check how they've been lining up.

Bendtner will be first choice IMO. I think we can see them field both at times, and most likely some rotation when there are midweek games etc.

My guess is Bendtner will be sold in the summer, after the world cup. They just replaced him early with Søderlund.

                    My burning questions....

Are there any players likely to head off to the World Cup? Norway haven’t qualified, so I’m guessing not many. And I’m guessing the World Cup won’t affect the league’s schedule of games.

Does anything affect the schedule of games? Are there likely to be any blanks/double gameweeks due to cup ties or anything like that?

GW13-16 are played during WC. Bendtner and Jensen will likely play for Denmark.

GW17-20 could lead to blanks for Lillestrøm, Molde, Sarpsborg and Rosenborg due to EL/CL. The clubs themselves have to request for postponements.

GW27 and GW29 have dates reserved for postponed games.

Cheapest options: Any prospects of playing defenders for 4.0 and midlfielders for 4.5?

On a more specific note: really keen on Odd's goalie but unsure whether Rossbach is their undisputed nr 1. Got any news on that?

Btw, thanks for setting everything up so quickly!

4.5 midfielders look sparse still, but we'll look deep into that for you, likely you'll have to go to 5.5 for any joy though.

4.0 defenders also sparse, although there is one likely candidate, we'll need some more friendlies to be sure, will get back to that. 4.5 are plentifull though.

On your Odd-question, there is an interesting twist there.... Rossbach has refused to sign a contract extension, wishing to move on to bigger and better things. As a result Odd's policy kicks in, stating that they will play players who will be staying and developing with the club. This has led to Myhra being the defacto #1 for Odd as of now. Time will tell if they will stay firm on this though...

I'm gonna drop some names right now. Grorud (Sandefjord) is likely to be one of their three CBs at 4.0. As MrKlin said we will have to monitor the lineups during friendlies, but if he doesn't start I'm pretty sure it will be van Berkel who's also 4.0. Wouldn't expect many points though.

At 4.5 there are a few who might be regular starters, but not many exciting options. Vetlesen at Stabæk is the standout option for me (really surprised he's not 5.0 or 5.5).

Grorud plays in the middle of the back 3. Reppesgård Hansen was the first choice there last season. He's been out injured this pre-season. van Berkel seems to be fighting with Gana Kane and to some degree Seck for a spot.

You're right, almost forgot about Reppesgård Hansen. Grorud was out for the first half of the season last year though, so still think he might have a shot at being first choice even with Reppesgård Hansen back. We'll have to monitor, but I think the two Sandefjord CBs are the 4.0 players most likely to get minutes. Maybe Granli at Stabæk as well, has played a lot in preseason.

Can get quite a good squad via Adegbenro + assuming picks like Schwartz/Skalevik, Kabran work out. 3-5-2 looks quite appealing actually, although struggling to find a cheap fwd vs cheap mid.

Considering how staunchly they stick to 4-3-3 it looks a very similar, even more expensive Aguero/Jesus situation. No chance I'm playing £13m for a forward with even a bit of competition.

Even Adegbenro looks a little expensive considering his form at the end of last season was good but not explosive.

I hate advicing on bisquits, but the number 1 choice in Rosenborg outside of Bendtner is really Pål Andre Helland. Has been sharp this winter, and hauled 118 points last season despite a neverending string of niggling injuries.... one to keep close watch on as he is ALWAYS in the thick of it when he actually plays..

Agree on this. He burned me so many times last season with his injuries, but if he's fit he will get points.

THE discussion of the pre-season. To be fair I don't think you can make a "wrong" choice there at this point. Pros and Cons for the choices are marginal in my opinion. There are elements like Andersen on set pieces vs. Jradi closer up to the striker, there are speculations on how they will resolve playtime for their two premium strikers, and will that impact Jradi in any way, and there is even an outlier in what the new purchases in midfield can do to steal play-time...

This is something that will likely be discussed on every article for the pre-season and perhaps the first couple of gameweeks.

Jradi played furthest forward last season, as he played in behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1. He's also a brilliant player, probably likely to attract interest from abroad in the summer. He has stated he wants to leave for a bigger club abroad.

Ulland Andersen is playing out wide on the left flank. His strength is his brilliant right foot. From open play I'd say Jradi is more dangerous, but Ulland Andersen is such a threat from set pieces (direct from free kicks or crosses from corners and free kicks). He's like a poor mans Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Can't go wrong with either. Ulland Andersen was best pick at the start of the season, Jradi was better towards the end.

It will be interesting, as MrKlin said, to see how the purchase of Mos affects the lineup. Do they change the lineup and play two strikers, or continue with 4-4-1-1? If Jradi is moved out wide to accommodate both Mos and Pedersen I'd say Ulland Andersen is the better pick due to set piece threat.

Agdestein a good option? I read that he scored 4 goals during preseason on the previous article, for 6.0 in the Odd defence...

Agdestein is a striker at 6.0, but after the game in question they've bought Torgeir Børven from Brann, coming in at 8.0 and likely their main man. Worth shortlisting, but not starting off a squad with.

Yeah, he absolutely smashed it in the Norwegian championship on loan last season. He's tucked a few away during pre-season as well. I think Komsoon will be a bigger hit in Brann than in Sogndal, interesting to see how he will impact Haugen's output in midfield

I think they will sign another striker, but unless they sell two foreigners they can only sign a Norwegian striker.. And there aren't many available quality options, so Skålevik could still be first choice.

Alright, until further articles, I think I'll be sticking with this

                      Hansen
                      Glesnes Wormgoor Gabrielsen
                      Adegbenro Jradi Koomson Reginuissen
                      Johnson Lehne Olsen Bakenga
                      Jonsson | Haakenstaad Skerjve Vetlesen

Bakenga and Reginuissen are placeholders at the moment for their prices, just looked at their fixtures really. No Bendtner/Soderlund could be an issue but for the time being the squad looks better without them.

Quite like most of this really, but I'm not sold on your strikers (any of them really), feels like you have 3 differentials there and they can all be improved upon...

I'm looking at names like Benjamin Stokke, Flamur Kastrati, Steffen Skålevik, Ronnie Schwartz or Kristian Floki Finnbogason if you are looking at budget options there.

Was looking at Kastrati. To be honest none of the strikers atm seem like fantastic options, but I guess that will change as I learn more. Would have got Stokke again but Kristiansund have rather meh opening fixtures.

Just a side note MrKlin, could Engblom challenge Kastrati at Sandefjord? They signed him from Strømsgodset in the summer. Against Bodø/Glimt two days ago Engblom started, with Kastrati on the bench.

I'd go Anders Konradsen over Trondsen, they've swapped around so Trondsen is sitting deep while Konradsen is the runner in the left lane this season.

As per above, look at Grorud from Sandefjord as your 5th before Antonijevic.

Vetlesen could be a good shout for midfield 5th, but check friendlies for playtime, not too sure about his starting prospects this season.

The rest of the team looks rather smashing tbh.

I like Hussain. He has been playing a very attacking role in a midfield three in preseason. He was on fire for the second half of the season last year at Odd and have been looking good so far in preseason.

Oh, and Haugesund might be signing a new great CB so Skjerve's place might be under threat (or Knudsen's, hard to say right now).

Not sure Gregersen is nailed either. Molde will be lining up with four at the back this season and I think this is the first choice lineup:

Forgot about Sarr, he's pretty much nailed on at CB. No idea who'll play out of the 3 CBs if they play with 4 at the back. Not likely to be Gregersen.

                                An added resource for you:
                                https://www.vg.no/spesial/2018/vglupen/

Each day up to league start they present an analysis of a team, with expected starting lineup, expected season result etc. It's in norwegian, but the expected lineup alone can be of great help.

Joined again, should be good. Done a largely autofill team so far, and will tweak up until deadline. Thanks in advance all (and especially MrKlin, Niemi and MTPockets) for the number of questions I will inevitably ask.

Broader question - what's a good site to check pre-season results/team selections etc.? I've had a search but nothing clear is jumping out?

Flashscore has info on goals (not lineups), but even that's not a quick process.

                                      Elilteserien - https://www.flashscore.com/football/norway/eliteserien/
                                      Select a team - e.g. https://www.flashscore.com/team/stabaek/CbXNfZvn/ then a match.

Hoping someone else can point to something more encompassing.

I've even looked on some of the teams websites, but even they only show results and not line-ups.

For info, altomfotball will be a good resource for the season:

Fixture difficulty. Pondering home/away ratings (1-5), factoring in last season + newcomers. Think this looks ok?

                                            Team - Home / Away
                                            RBK - 5 / 5

                                            ODD - 5 / 2
                                            SIF - 5 / 2
                                            MOL - 4 / 3

                                            LSK - 3 / 2
                                            TIL - 3 / 2
                                            KBK - 3 / 2
                                            SAN - 3 / 2

I would like to point out it's way harder to do this in Eliteserien, the gap in quality isn't as big as in Premier League. I'd say go for form over fixture any day. The only exception is Rosenborg. They won the league easy last year and I expect them to be even better this year. Rosenborg should be way better than everyone else, and that's why I would argue only they should get the 5 rating. I wouldn't care to much about fixtures for my players other than against Rosenborg, as long as they are in form or playing for a team in form.

If we had a scale from 1-6, my subjective opinion of the teams right now, but it could look massively different after a few games.

                                                Rosenborg 6
                                                Molde 5
                                                Strømgodset 5
                                                Sarpsborg 4+
                                                Brann 4
                                                Vålerenga 4
                                                Odd 4-
                                                Tromsø 3+
                                                Stabæk 3+

Harder for sure. Scale will gradually get replaced with auto ratings according to results, but I like having a rough starting guide.

You're right about Rosenborg, although Odd, Sif, S08 had slightly better home results last season. Maybe a function of euro fixtures to be fair. I only have one season league experience to go by - so appreciate there's more to it. Another example is you have Start above BG, which I guess is from broader info rather than just last season.

Plus factoring in the difference between what's good for a def vs goals makes it harder.

Scale - cheers, will look at merging some of that.

There is a MOTD type of show, but shorter highlights than in MOTD. There are extended highlights available for every game online, but as said might be geo-blocked. There was a guy putting them on YouTube last season, but he was asked to remove them. Not sure how it will be this season, but we'll keep you guys updated.

Thought I'd write some words about Brann, since I'm following them quite closely.

                                                  Players to consider:

                                                  Sahin-Radlinger (Kee, 5.5):
New goalie of the season. Joining Brann on loan from Hannover, where he played third string in goal for years. Unless injured, he's the clear first choice. Seeing that Brann has been been keeping quite a few clean sheets under the current manager he might be considered. But there's probably more value to be found among the defenders.

                                                  Teniste (Def, 5.5):
New signing from Sogndal. Seems to be grabbing the right-back in front of Jonsson. Been having a good attacking relationship with Koomson during the preseason. Unclear whether this will lead to points during the season, seeing that he only had one goal and one assist last season.

                                                  Wormgoor (Def, 5.5):
Wearing the captain's armband he should be a first choice as center-back. His real appeal is that he's second in line when it comes to free kicks in dangerous positions, and a probable penalty taker. The problem here is that Brann very rarely gets either.

                                                  Acosta (Def, 5.5):
Seems to be the clear choice accompanying Wormgoor this season as well. Had several massive chances in front of goal on set pieces last season. With a normal conversion rate this season, he could yield great value.

                                                  Haugen (Mid, 10.0):
Involved in "everything" offensively for Brann. Scored 5 and had 11 assists last year. Seems like he's developed a good relationship with the newcomer Koomson. Brann is possibly a more attacking-minded side this year as well. Could be a great pick if you can afford him. With players like Adegbenro and Helland on Rosenborg in the same price range however, it might be hard to find room for him.

                                                  Koomson (Mid, 8.5):
The big signing of the transfer window for Brann. Did good for the relegated Sogndal last season, and has been looking good in the preseason. He has scored two goals in four matches. Might be a good pick.

                                                  Skålevik (Off, 6.5):
Currently the clear first choice up front as Brann only has one other striker. Great value for money unless Brann signs someone new, but it's been real quiet on that front lately. Did great for Start on loan last season, scoring 10 goals in 11 matches. Two goals in four matches in the preseason so far. He has however struggled in Eliteserien. Unlikely to score more than 10 goals, even if he should play consistently all season.

                                                  Players NOT to consider:

                                                  Rolantsson (Def, 6.5):
Although playing as a winger for big parts of last season, he's unlikely to play a big roll in the team this year. Brann currently has 10 foreign players, and are only able to register 9 for league play. After refusing to sign a new contract, Rolantsson is likely to be out the doors before the season starts. Even if he stays, he's looking to be a rotation player at best.

Agree on all parts. My arguments against Koomson is that he had set-pieces and penalties at Sogndal. He'll most likely have neither at Brann. Will he be dangerous enough from open play? Remains to be seen.

With Koomson playing, Vega and Braaten fit and Marengo finally settling I wouldn't be surprised to see more penalties coming Brann's way this season.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see Skålevik score 10-12 goals for Brann if they really give him a go, but to be honest I would be surprised if they don't sign anyone else. Not expecting a big signing, but maybe someone who will challenge Skålevik and giving us a similar situation as Brann had up front last season.

Although he is back where he has done best, Børven has yet to prove himself as any kind of goalscorer, so at 8.0 I'd say give it a wait-and-see.

Daniel Chima Chukwu on the other hand.... interesting prospect. We're paying attention to the Molde friendlies moving into the season, see if he has shaken off the rust of bench-time in poland... he did quite well last time he was in Norway, about 0.3 per game or so for goals AND assists, and kept that into his china-career. When he reached Legia Warzawa he didn't break in though, so 2 very silent seasons may have left a mark....

He did okay last time, but he's not a clinical striker. Hard working, but wasted a lot of chances last time he was here. Haven't watch him since he played in Molde a few years ago, but haven't done well. Certainly no captain material, so I would wait until he show form at 9.0.

Settled on this at the moment, steering towards the 3,5,2 due to the value in midfield.

Backing Helland, I know he gets injured but when he plays his double digit hauls come in thick and fast. Nearly matched adengbenro for points and played 500 less minutes.....

Also there are always fires to put out in this game so it's nice to not have to spend a transfer on a keeper if by some chance yours gets injured.

The fact that Brann finished 2nd in 2016 after being promoted combined with what I've read so far makes a few Bodø/Glimt players look like great value considering how well they did in the second division.

Difficult to ignore Opseth's scoring record last season. A few of the midfielders look decent value, especially Trond Olsen who seems to be a bit of a club legend and has scored well over the years.

They've got a couple of Spaniards who have played regularly in Spain's second tier and they've just signed a new keeper who was voted the best in the Serbian league last season.

Apparently (unsure as to the veracity of this statement, got it from here https://www.vg.no/spesial/2018/vglupen/ iirc) Bodo/Glimt has a history of underperforming with a strong team. You're right about the closeness of the league though, they could end up doing very well.

It was big shock that Brann went down though. Sure, they weren't expected to finish 2nd, but they are one of the bigger teams in Norway.

If anything I would expect Start to do well from the promoted teams, as they are one of the traditional bigger teams and they have quite a solid budget compared to other Eliteserien clubs (they almost bought Fredrik Haugen from Brann this winter). The question mark is how will they're young squad fare in Eliteserien, there are few players with experience from Eliteserien.

Their first choice midfield trio are 20, 18 and 17 old.

                                                      Thoughts on Heintz?

Will he be a regular this season?

Sorry, this was supposed to be a separate post 😆 !

Not sold on Ospeth. I remember Bamba scoring wel in the lower division and that form never came through once he was playing in the big boys league 🙂

Opseth is in recovery after operating this winter, and is nowhere near match fit yet anyway, so you'll have time to wait and see there.
