Dugout Discussion – Watford vs Everton

Saturday’s slate of seven matches comes to a conclusion at Vicarage Road as Watford entertain Everton at 5.30pm.

This evening’s encounter affords Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers the chance of short-term scouting, with both sides two of only eight teams currently guaranteed to play in Gameweek 31.

The Hornets swept aside Chelsea 4-1 in their previous home match under Javi Gracia, with the likes of Gerard Deulofeu and Abdoulaye Doucoure emerging as potential targets for our five-man midfields.

Meanwhile, both Theo Walcott and Oumar Niasse will fancy their chances against the league’s worst home defence.

The Toffees pair have both delivered two goals and an assist in the last four Gameweeks to earn the interest of Fantasy managers.

Indeed, Niasse was the fourth most transferred in player for Gameweek 28, claiming over 152,00 new owners, while 40,000+ have opted for Walcott as they square up to a backline that’s conceded 26 times in front of their own fans.

Feel like Newcastle might have it in them to sit back and play a similar game to Swansea and stifle Salah's ability to get in behind, but at Anfield it could be too much to ask.

Liverpool CL tie is done, no need to be rested for the second leg.

Would expect Kane and key team mates to have limited minutes ahead of Juve.

If you take away Salah's goals you are looking at Townsend, lots of shots for little reason and no product.

Townsend doesnt deserve baps for turning up and neither does Salah. Its great for Liverpool as he does score, but if he didnt, he would be a useless player who looks flash but ultimately achieves nothing.

Maybe Townsend is a harsh comparison, maybe Taarabt is a better analogy.

Indeed, and he is a great player for it. Why would he get baps though? He wastes so many opportunities, admittedly opportunities he quite often creates. An attacking move that "almost" scores may as well have been no attacking move at all, its just part of the hype of the game. The game is binary, goal or no goal, everything else is superfluous.

It is a massive if. Agreed.

Kane without goals is still a decent targetman who can set up opportunities for his teammates with good distribution. See, there is a massive difference between Salah and Kane in their teamplay. Salah is a briliant player, he is not a brilliant teammate.

Doesn't count, because if you take the assist away, he really doesn't provide so much end product.

Salah just is not a clinical finisher, nor a good team mate. He just takes bad shots and misses chances. Because that's the narrative. No matter what the stats say, they're wrong.

What I would say is Salah misses more "must score" chances than anyone else (leader for big chances missed) however, from his general shooting he's certainly been a better finisher than Kane this season.

I actually think Kane's finishing has been abysmal this season.

Kane's conversion has been just fine. Around 19%, which is grand, particularly seen that his xG/shot has been about 13%.

But the thing is Salah has been ridiculously good. If you check Paul Riley's xG maps here, Kane's xG (non-penalty) this season is 17, real goals 21 - but Salah has got those 21 goals from chances from which you'd expect a professional football player (a player who is in the opta stats packages that are analysed, so mainly just the big leagues) to score just 13 goals. Actually the truth is that he is not just taking pot shots, nor is he wasting a lot of good chances. He gets to good shooting sector, and finishes more clinically than anybody in the big leagues right now.

Ah I see, xG for me isn't as much a factor that I use as it varies by seemingly everyone's models. By that table also looks like Aguero is finishing rather well.

Salah and Aguero finishing their overall shots well is no surprise to me, as I go by the basic shot to goal conversions and both are in around 23% from the stats I've available. Big chances missed, Salah leads the pack, with 19, while Kun is down on 12 (Kane, on 14). Funny enough, mine say Kane is in at 15% rather than 19% but then maybe he has 19% overall vs 15% in the PL which is what I apply as I prefer to keep competitions separate (for fairness of comparison in a discussion about, say, the PL).

I think Salah is a funny blend where he misses more chances you really thing is an absolute goal, therefore gets a name as being a poor finisher (and early in the season was certainly capable of some real howlers) but will score a more difficult chance that some perceive as easy when it isn't.

                    • 10 Years

That 19% is PL but from last month. Appears that he's been missing a lot of shots recently. The thing is, however, that 15% conversion rate is absolutely fine, and particularly for a player who takes a lot of shots from distance. Kane has become a real shot hogger, which also shows in his diminishing creativity. Against what Ginkapo said above, Salah is much more useful for his team mates than Kane is to his now.

About the "big chances", when you get a lot of shots from good areas, you're also going to miss a lot of them. I'm not sure what is the definition of big chance here. Some count as clear cut chance a chance with xG 0.4 or more, but i'm not sure if the big chances are defined by am xG value or by the distance to goal or being alone against GK. The last time I checked, the big chances stat wasn't really transparent.

I find the xG maps more useful in these days when they can define quite well the xG for individual shot depending on whether the chance resulted from pass or dribble, what is the shot location, are there players between the shot and the taker, what body part it is taken with etc.

But yeah, there's no denying that he has still managed to miss more good chances than he has scored goals, despite exceeding his scoring expectations wildly. That makes for a really strange season.

You know, funnily comparable player is Giroud. He is proven to be an exceptionally good finisher, but still managed to miss more big chances than he scored goals some seasons.

I think this kind of observation was behind the bad finisher myth in his case too.

'Not a good teammate' lol because all those goals that his teammates set up for him are nothing to do with the quality of Salah's movement making him easy to find in dangerous positions

Doesn't count. Just because he creates a lot of chances for others, that doesn't make him a good team mate once it has been decided that he is not.

      ???

He's very much at the top of the table both in xG and xA per 90. Means that he creates a lot of good enough scoring chances for himself and his team mates to score even if he wasn't finishing them at a ridiculous rate.

That said, I agree with you in that the baps should mainly come from things that are not already rewarded with points, and goals and assists are.

Typical of this site, where people don't try to understand the point being made. The point is that bonus should not just be awarded for doing things that already get points, like scoring. If Salah is just doing his job in a given match, which is being up front and scoring or assisting, then that gets points, but not necessarily bonus. He should get bonus when he is one of the three best performers (in his job) on the pitch. Today he was perhaps not that. Other days he is.

I don't think the point is well made by imagining taking away his goals. But I think the point is sound. People are whinging because Salah gets a goal and assist and no baps. But aside from those contributions, on this day, he did not add enough to be among the top three. Stop moaning, is really the point. It is not just scoring that earns baps--it's not how the system was designed.

I agree that there's no point worrying yourself about whether you can convince others to agree with your views. But that doesn't mean that the right way to deal with views you disagree with or that strike you as not quite right is to just treat them as if they are utter rubbish. Part of being successful and happy is often coming to some understanding with people you need to deal with, and learning what they are really trying to say rather than just dismissing things as soon as they don't match what you would say yourself.

I see a lot of people transferring Kane in, and it makes sense, before Huddersfield and Bournemouth. But there's a vital CL clash against Juventus between them, just 3 days from Huddersfield match. Don't you think there's a risk that he'll be rested for it, particularly against Huddersfield? Even if he starts, it's not unlikely that he's subbed if the get a goal, and so a really big haul seems unlikely.

City, on the other hand, already won their CL tie, so they can actually rest players in CL and focus fully on PL for a moment.

I've avoided Kane all season until now. Benching doesn't worry me now as Poch has flogged the man gives him less rest than any keep PL player, Llorente has been a poor backup and they are in a dogfight for top 4 so can't see him resting him at all.

It's particularly captaincy option that concerns me. I'd be all in for Kun to Kane(c), but if Spurs are a goal or two up on second half, I can well see that Poche subs him to keep him fresh for Juve match. So I just think that he is unlikely to score more than 1 goal despite the splendid fixture, and having other concerns, 1 goal expectation just doesn't justify a hit when it means selling Aguero.

It says a lot for Salah's class and Liverpool's scoring prowess when I feel almost satisfied with ONLY 10 points for Salah with my hugely differential captain Kane to play.

It does say a lot that we can say 'only' 10 points. That man is a machine and has been a no-brainer captain choice for most recent weeks.

I would have captained Salah if I was top of my mini league. But I had to take a chance on kane.

Butland just Heaton'd the system. No biggie. The positive points he racked up clearly out weighed the negative points. An own goal is only a -6 on the bps, so not a big hit as some are thinking.

Should be more then -6bps, but then again I might just be salty that Shaqiri ain’t getting all 3 BAPS

Also missed out on a CS with the own goal.

.. but he only got 23 BPS. Wouldn't be enough for 1 bonus point in most matches.

Can't expect much more as a Newcastle supporter. Personally think you should be raiding Celtic, Rangers, Aberdeen for players. Take the best from Scotland as their heads don't get turned by Manchester, London and overseas. They're used to being up north.
