We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

I am planning to get Lukaku but have not decided what to do with de Gea and Smalling. Jones is a question mark. Is de Gea worth his price when 15 good players are needed for bb?

Anyone else think the double game weeks make the run in to the season extremely boring? Its so clearly the best strategy to save all chips for the end that everybody ends up doing more or less the same things the last game weeks. Anyone who has played the game a single season before knows to save chips, so its not like the planning and knowledge even gives a big advantage over anyone else.

Im pretty sure this is the reason most people enjoy it. Its a free way to get an advantage just by knowing what to do. It doesnt take any particular skill or thought, you just gain an advantage because you know you are supposed to save the chips.

no but it means more points are scored in the final gameweeks on average than in the earlier gameweeks, which makes for exciting finishes to mini leagues...dunno why so many complain about the chips, we'd be far more bored without them

i specifically like how picking a wildcard team for a run of games to maximise points is imperative to a good season, its probably the hardest aspect of fantasy (to accumulate team value, to identify the best 15 that play more games than others, and to select TC and BB at the right time)

I agree. The chips conceptually just don't work well with DGWs. Bench boost is probably the biggest culprit, as its value decreases massively when not paired with a WC.

I’m in some very competitive mini-leagues. It’s neither here nor there what everyone else has done - some will have planned better than others - it’s all about what I have done and my confidence in my own ability to have a very strong end to the season. I made up a deficit of exactly 100 points last season IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS to win my main cash league.

I found the whole thing particularly exciting.

I was similar. I was down 107 points in my ml after GW35. I wound up winning the league by 50 points.

Ml rival triple captained costa in the DGW 37 who only played in one of the games. I used BB and outscored him by 99 points in DGW37.

Planning is one thing but results can lead to huge swings with the chips.

Regardless of the chips, people would pop wc this time around and have identical teams. At least the chips are likely create a higher variance between the scores for the run in independent of rank, and in my opinion more fun.

I quite enjoy the DGWs and chips being used in conjunction with each other, because before them, come the latter weeks of the season and some/most mini leagues were done and dusted. The DGWs then gave some the chance to catch, but it wasn't always enough to get people to catch up to their ML leaders.

WIth the introduction of the chips, it allows players different strategies in those final weeks along with the DGWs and it allows for an overall more entertaining game to everyone.

I have an OR in the top 300. Looking at the teams around me it is amazing how many of them have not kept their chips intact. If you play your chips properly you can make a bit improvement in your rank.
I do agree that it makes it a bit of a procession and here on in there is not a lot of variety in to how to play the game successfully.

It's wrong to think that most people are going to do the same thing. A lot of managers high up have used chips already and even those that haven't will have different strategies about how and when to play them. In one of my mini leagues, there was a guy at the top ranked about 14k. He didn't plan for GW31 and scored 9. I scored 106 with my free hit and I've closed a massive gap. There must be other managers high up who have used chips or will miss their opportunities with the doubles and blanks. There will be huge swings between now and the end of the season and that makes things very interesting!

I'm inclined to agree. They should devise a rule like the wildcards where you have to use at least 1 chip in the first half of the season - or maybe 1 chip within the first 13 weeks, then another between 14-26, then another 27-38.

My MLs are really formulaic because of it and it's not like anything changes because everyone makes similar transfers. I'm starting to sound like Marvin the paranoid android now!! God I'm depressed...

It's definitely not as interesting when the DGWs fall at exactly the same time every year. They used to be a bit less predictable.

Fantasy Eliteserien is providing something new this year in this regard. Several games cancelled because of weather and we've got two early DGWs coming up.

GW1 proved you don't need a DGW to succeed with the chips in FES. Even if going all-out for the early DGWs is the right thing to do, if you get it wrong you've still got all season to make up ground.

I've decided that other than the 2 WCs to allow for a team unfairly done over by injuries to recover, that other chips and even captains are unnecessary. Would make for a purer and more skilled game in my opinion and I think 4 points for a hit is a perfect number. I'm tired of seeing 3rd on benchers and VCs hauling,

When the chips are being reserved for game weeks at the end of the season, then it dilutes their value somewhat, as everyone uses them at the same time for the same impact. Overtime, more will suss out how and when to use them which completely negates the impact of using them, or even having them at all. Don't get me wrong, the chips are great, but relying on the ignorance of others shouldn't be how we measure our success. Something needs to be done about when we use them. Maybe having to use the bench boost in the first half of the season and the free hit in the second, for example.

      Will play 3-4-3 until DGW;

      DDG
      Monreal | Smalling | Mee
      Son | Salah | Willian | Mahrez
      Firmino | Auba | Vardy

Then will do 3 transfers (-8) at GW34
      Firmino, Vardy, Mee to Ayew, Lukaku, Alonso and will end up ;

      DDG | Courtois
Monreal | Smalling | Alonso | Van der Hoorn | Morgan
      Son | Salah | Willian | Mahrez | Ki
      Ayew | Lukaku | Auba

        Mustafi to Robertson.

Silva to Mkhi if you want to risk rotation.

      Butland (Elliot)
      Bavies, Robertson, Dunk, Bauer, Zanka
      Salah, Mahrez, Albrighton, KDB, Shaqiri
      Firm, Aubam, Hemed
