We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

I'd make it a question of either:

        A) Barnes, Silva
        B) Lukaku, Kenedy

Decide based on the DGWs. I would lean with B based on what we currently know (which is not a lot).

i was adamant that a 3-5-2 was the way to go with WC, as a lot on here one night were more or less agreeing that there's isn't much value in a thirdforward overa a good 5th mid.

However, now i don't know. Have only 8.0 for the 5th mid spot with Barnes as a third bench forward, and the only players i'd be interested in midfield are Mkhi, Willian, and D.Silva, and there's points for each one being a bit risky.

Are we in firm agreement that a front line of Vardy + Auba+ Firmino woul be better now?

Settled on that strikeforce and have seen it a lot lately

5 decent defs, 4 decent mids and 3 up top.

5 big mids means 2 big strikers and don't fancy the cheap strikers

Lots of people have money in Firmino and Liverpool scoring for fun

yep, that's more or less the way my team is going.

Things i'm unsure on are Otamendi, D.Silva, and Willian.
You confident they'll still play plenty?

Willian worth a punt especially with decent subs on the bench for the bb in 34 so happy to risk him!

I regret selling Otamendi but I think i probably would on the current wc. Need the good fixtures from nailed players

Yeah that's true, i think on his current form he's too good to be dropped anyway, and now out of the champs league also.

I could very well sell Otamendi now, think i've had the last good run out of him tbh.

                Cheers for the reply man.

Even if GW37 is the bigger of the two it doesn't change the fact we're going to wildcard 32 or 33 does it? Plus we'll know for sure before GW32 starts I assume? I guess the only difference might be delaying the bench boost to GW37, or perhaps free hitting as an alternative (navigate through GW35 with transfers only).

Quick question. On a wildcard, would you ditch Sterling for Willian today to secure DGW and price rise?

Rest of my team is pretty template:

      Balanced def, no Alonso
I know no Alonso is risky but balanced team is better

These moves worth a hit you reckon?

    Walcott > Son/Mkhi/Sterling
    Kane > Auba

    Cheers

Who would you out rather have on a wildcard:

    D.Silva or Sterling?

sterling - think silva might be given a lot of time off to see family once title wrapped up. sterling still big rotation risk but playing for WC space as well

My only ManCity cover is Otamendi and I'm thinking of having DSilva in too.
My ideal midfield has to have 5 from these 6: Salah, Willian, Mahrez, DSilva, Mkhi, Son.
Fixturewise, I'd prefer starting without Son since he plays away to Chelsea, then do DSilva->Son after EVE-MCI.

But do you think DSilva will play vs Everton, 4 days before Liverpool away?

No idea to be honest, that’s why I might skip a MCY def altogether

Those going with only 2 big players up front, how are you distributing those funds to the defence?

Aside from Alonso, there aren't many options I am interested in that would differ from a budget constrained defence. Would still want 1 burnley, 1 swansea, not keen on Arsenal. Doesn't leave much else

i’m thinking of getting dummet as an enabler, in the weeks where some of the bigger teams have poorer fixtures newcastle have some good ones, and it means I can upgrade elsewhere.

Alonso Burnley Swansea Leicester/Liverpool/Arsenal/United for the final spots.

If you have DdG, maybe Robertson. Arsenal great fixtures so maybe Mustafi/Monreal and Robertson

    3. Duffy Dunk

Going with Auba Firmino Murray, I plan to have Alonso Otamendi Monreal Robertson Fernandez.
Ota will probably become Bavies/Vertonghen after GW32.

i’m dodging both, want nailed players really if I can.

would probably go smalling out of the 2, better fixtures

Dybala10 Would you consider De Gea,bailly, robertson. Know its double united defense but will otamendi be rotation risk if league sown up and saved for championa league, and united are pushing for second spot and tend to be more defensive? Just a thought

    Wc G2G?

    DDG / Fab
    Morgan / Lowton / Tarkowski / Vdh / Christensen
    Willian / Mahrez / Salah / Son / Kennedy
    Aubameyang / Lukaku / Firmino

A big if but...if rescheduled blanks fall as expected in 34 and 37 by my calcs gives me...

    13/15 in DGW (play BB)
8 in BGW 35 (salah cap vs WBA)
7 in DGW 37 Just need to save enough FTs between 35-37 for double and sorted (play TC - kane?!)

Although never quite goes to plan!

Similar set-up. I'd be concerned about Monreal, Wenger has 2 left backs that can allow him to concentrate on EL. Burnley defender might be good, or go Mustafi.

Take a break and wait for the fixtures to be announed 🙂 Looks good to me though. Not sold on the backline personally - would rather have Alonso and a cheapie despite his horrendous run of points

    A: Silva Christensen Naughton

    B: Kenedy Alonso Bailly

So thus is the side taking my fancy. Really breaks my heart to drop Gross though.

    DDG Fabianski

    Alonso Mustafi Naughton Morgan Lowton

    Salah Mahrez Son Willian Kenedy

    Aubameyang Firmino Vardy

    1. Netley Lucas
      • 10 Years

Very nice, you could go for Lukaku & Murray instead of Firmino & Vardy, but it's a very good squad.

        That's true. I could also go Mhki/Barnes over Kenedy/Vardy.

Hopefully these fixtures get announced an actual draft can be nailed down

        Thanks for the reply

      Solid.

Lukaku seems a bit marmite around here but I fancy him to do the business over the run in.

You definitely not sold on him?

          Think in isolation you’re right.

I’m considering capping Lukaku for 34 though, which throws an extra incentive in there for me 🙂

Looks good - could you downgrade Mustafi to get Gross for Kenedy? 🙂 But then Gross is expensive for semi-permanent benching!

      1. Viper

I might do that because I love Gross. Had him from 5.4

Not even a huge downgrade needed then? I know how you feel - was sad when I sold him a while back! 🙁
