We check in with Gameweek 31 for the last time now, assessing the latest player, team and talking point to catch our attention.

Mohamed Salah’s relentless quest for Fantasy Premier League points gathers pace as Liverpool’s form has many thinking twice over parting company with their key assets.

Meanwhile, we offer our final word on the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip in light of Saturday’s reduced set of fixtures.

The Player

So much Fantasy faith was pinned on Mohamed Salah and Liverpool’s attack to deliver over Gameweek 31’s four matches.

Yet even the Egyptian managed to surpass our lofty expectations with an extraordinary display against Javi Gracia’s hapless Watford.

A sublime first season at Anfield stepped into the realms of the ridiculous as Salah ran riot against the Hornets, delivering a season-high tally of 29 points thanks to four goals and an assist.

With seven Gameweeks remaining, his tally of 266 points has already surpassed last season’s top scoring player, Alexis Sanchez, who returned 264 points in his final full campaign at Arsenal.

That’s better than Riyad Mahrez’s 240 points on his way to finishing first in Leicester’s title-winning 2015/16 campaign. It also eclipses the career-high tallies of the likes of Eden Hazard (233 points), Harry Kane (224 points) and Sergio Aguero (216 points).

One of only five players to produce more than 6.0 points per match (ppm) this term, Salah’s average of 8.9ppm is well clear of second-placed Aguero (7.0).

Indeed, with just one top-eight opponent remaining (cry eve BOU wba STO che BHA), the only surprise would now be if he fails to add to his 14 sets of double-digits and breach the 300-point mark come the end of the campaign.

The Team

After suffering a 2-1 loss at Old Trafford, Liverpool bounced back emphatically to help FPL managers to a bumper Gameweek.

The 5-0 victory over Watford also saw Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino in the points again, while at the back, the Reds delivered a thirteenth clean sheet of the campaign – just two less than the best defences, Man United and City, with fifteen apiece.

At a point when many are now eyeing up Wildcards to profit from the impending double Gameweeks, Salah’s ability to score big – and consistently do so – now surely makes him undroppable, regardless of the Reds’ lack of a double Gameweek.

Although many are keen to show Mane and Firmino the door, Klopp’s side served a timely reminder that getting rid doesn’t come without risk.

Saturday’s romp now means that Liverpool have scored three or more goals on 15 occasions – seven times at home and eight away showcases their consistency.

Firmino, meanwhile, has earned bonus in 11 of the 12 league matches he has scored in. As well as firing a hat-trick past Porto in the Champions League, Mane has hit his most consistency Fantasy form of the season, producing points in each of the last four Gameweeks.

Should Klopp’s men continue to rack up the goals and buck the growing exodus, those without Wildcards could profit if they keep faith in the Reds’ front three for those favourable remaining matches.

The Talking Point

This season’s first set of Gameweek postponements persuaded many – almost half a million managers – to unleash their Free Hit chip for Gameweek 31.

Although just four matches took place, Salah’s huge haul helped Free Hit chip managers average a hefty 95.5 points, gaining just over a 25-point margin on their rivals (70.1).

However, that margin could, and should, have been greater – only 80.6% of them decided to captain Salah.

On Sunday, Ragabolly’s look into the impact of the Gameweek 31 Free Hit chip also pointed out that planning for this round of fixtures cost, on average, a further three points for rivals.

Essentially, then, over 444,000 FPL managers chose the Free Hit chip as a means of navigating Gameweek 31’s four matches, with a lofty 94.7% earning a climb in ranking.

While that clearly can be chalked up as an undoubted success, it’s also worth pointing out that, despite just four fixtures taking place, Salah was the only player in the most transferred in XI for Gameweek 31 to claim double-digits.

Six others – James Tomkins, Andrew Robertson, Junior Stanislas, Jordon Ibe, Luka Milivojevic and Cenk Tosun – achieved this but were largely ignored.

Granted, while Stanislas and Tosun both went into the weekend in fine form, the likes of Tomkins, Robertson, Ibe and Milivojevic all chose the perfect time to deliver season-high returns.

While that only serves to highlight the unpredictability of such occasions, it’s worth bearing in mind that Liverpool were the only top-eight team in action in Gameweek 31.

Those retaining Free Hit chips will be hoping that Gameweek 35 is a little easier to pinpoint the key names and big scorers, with the Merseysiders, Man City and Arsenal all set for favourable fixtures in the six-match slate.

    Who wins?
    1) Naughton + Lowton + Morgan
    2) Van der hoon + ward/mee + Chillwell
    3) Ward + Mee + Chillwell
Really confused as Ward more attacking and better defence but Chillwell doesnt seem nailed

No point making this decision right now. If Swansea & Burnley don’t have a double in 34 we won’t even get players from those teams.

They said on or around 19th March. Let’s hope today so that we can start making decisions.

I’d just look at the core of them right now which probably includes players from Spurs, Cheslea, United & Leicester.

I'm just not feeling the Auba or Vardy love, so how's this for a potential WC squad:
    DDG
    Alonso Smalling Mawson
    Mahrez Son Salah Willian Ki
    Fimino Lukaku

    Karius, J Ayew, Ward, Morgan

Bit of flexibility to also go 443 or 343.

1.4 ITB for a cheeky Kaku to Kane upgrade if needs be.

I have all my chips except BB.

I'm thinking there could be better options to Smalling, Mawson and Morgan.

    Any suggestions?

Smalling the risk of rotation. Morgan solid if they stopped giving up 1 goal per game in easier fixtures.
You are paying for Mawson over Fernandez and Naughton but there is that attacking threat.

      Karius ??
That's so left field it sounds like a bunch of hippys have kidnapped a panda are are holding it for ransom at the the North Pole 🙂

Yeah, Karius is just for the blank GW cover with ML matchups in mind, not planning to use my FH for it.

Downgrade Mawson to Fernandez and upgrade Smalling to...?

I'm struggling to find semi-premium defenders I like, Arsenal & Spurs leaky, City rotation and no doubles, already got Chelsea.

Any other suggestions for 5.5 to 6 mil-ish defenders?

    WC team:

    DDG, Fabianski

Monreal, Mustafi, Smalling, Christensen, Van der Hoorn

    Salah, Son, Willian, Mahrez, Kenedy

    Lukaku, Aubamayang, Murray

Murray short term for the 2 home games (32,33). Placeholder for Ayew in DGW34.

Aim is to switch to Kane and Vardy for GW37.

I have BB for 34, FH (get some City) for 35 and TC for 37 left.

I did Morgan > Chilwell to allow Smalling > Bailley. Therefore, 0.1 short for Morgan.

Dear Premier League, Sky Sports, BT Sport.

Please continue to take as long as you like to negotiate rescheduled Premier League fixtures, the rising undercurrent of panic and faux-assuredness from FPL managers who have spunked their Wildcards is a joy to watch.

Furthermore, most of said managers are only in their current predicament due to an unexplainable zeal to acquire players from dog poo teams like Stoke and Everton who have a horrible fixture this week...imagine wasting precious spots in your squad in the lead up to a blank game week with such players - and then when the blank is past, offloading them at such a speed you wondered why they were ever brought into their squads in the first place! 🙄

It goes without saying that such FPL managers really ought to be punished. Please do whatever you can to lend advantage to sensible managers who effectively winged the BGW to a degree, holding onto the likes of Heung-Min Son against all community advice, and prioritising the purchase of non-blankers such as Riyad Mahrez over early purchases of Theo Walcott.

I see your handy work at play in the stalling of the transfer market over the past two days - excellent, excellent work. In addition I’d thouroughly recommend tossing a gigantic spanner in to WC works by assigning as many rescheduled fixtures to the end of the season as possible...the scenes created on these pages would be a delight to behold 😆

    Sincerely,
    Legomané Schadenfreude

P.s. if you are in full agreement of the above please lend a +1 to the cause. Please note any disgruntled responses below. x

The underlying message has been horribly brushed under the carpet on here...over-planning for the BGW was a MASSIVE fail. A MASSIVE fail.
Not only because of the prioritisation and acquisition of the likes of Stoke, Everton and (dare I whisper it..) WBA players, but by the fact it has FORCED managers into an early GW32 wildcard because they are overloaded on rubbish teams with one poor fixture.

I planned for several weeks for the BGW, fielded 10 players and scored 107 points without using the free hit. Yes I am on wildcard now and I'll clean up the dross of 31 but at the same time I can set up my team well for the GW's 32/33 and adjust and make a plan for double gameweeks whenever they will be after fixture rescheduling. I don't think it'll make a big difference whether you wildcard on 32 or 33 depending on your team. Whatever will occur in rescheduling of fixtures I'm confident I can adjust my team for doubles with all other chips still intact. I just have a feeling that all this discussion about when to wildcard and failing the gw32 wildcard because of fixture rescheduling is unnecessary exaggerating.

Recency bias based on a short hot streak. Before wk 27 his highest score was 3, and most scores were 0. Last two seasons he scored 41 and 61 pts all season respectively. Personally, not interested. Plus I watch Swansea a fair bit and they are bad

Thanks for the thoughts on him. I assumed he was into some better form just but yeah nothing to say it won't dip again based on his overall season history.

I think I want lukaku though, with 2 dgws, over firmino as I have salah for liverpool cover anyway.

Would go with 1. Ki is SWAs best player and he has set pieces. Lukaku will get a few more goals. Plus they have one more DGW than the options in 2.

2 DGWs will probably have the teams SPU, BRI, MUN, LEI, SOU, CHE. Until they are announced cant be sure ofc.

Does this make sense for a current wildcarder who has No free hit chip?:

    Create team using
    3 Arsenal
    3 Man City
And 6 from Burnley Newcastle Swansea West ham
4 players from Spurs Chelsea Man Utd Leicester

This gives 15 DGW players for BB gameweek 34. 11 playing players in 35. And 3 free transfers to put out 7 DGW 37 players. -4 for 8 players, -8 for 9 players and so on.

And Triple captain Kane week 37.

Is this a reasonable plan do you reckon ?

Just wait for the fixtures to be confirmed imo.

There’s a good chance Burnley, Swansea, West Ham, Arsenal & City don’t have dgw in 34.

TV scheduling may mean more fixtures spread from 31 to 37 (not 34). Some 35 blanks may go to 34 not 37.

Looks OK in theory. I'm in the same boat. There are some problems such as
      - predicting who's going to be in the MCI team during the run in
      - predicting who's going to be in the ARS team while they remain in Europe (Auba excepted)
-having to choose 6 from some poor teams with ugly fixtures (WHM, SWA for example)
      - restricting yourself to 4 players from the most attractive sources (TOT CHE MAN LEI)

I'm waiting to see what the rearranged fixtures are and expecting to take a targeted hit or two.

      1. Four Letter Wirtz
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 8 months ago

Indeed. The good thing about MCI and LIV being drawn against each other is that they can't both go through. So either:

        - LIV will be fighting tooth and nail for a top league finish, or
        - MCI will be trying to break the all time points record

        1. Cok3y5murf
          • 9 Years
          7 years, 8 months ago

Liverpool will be fighting for a top 4 finish anyway though, even if they go through. In the event they don't win the CL (which can easily happen as they're not favorites), they still need to qualify for next year's CL. Just lost to United and Spurs are closing in too. So as much as people are speculating rotation, City have way more incentive to rotate than them. I expect just minutes to be managed mostly, which is alright.

    Willian / Mahrez / Salah / Son / Kenedy
    Aubameyang / Lukaku / Firmino

A big if but...if rescheduled blanks fall as expected in 34 and 37 by my calcs gives me...

    13/15 in DGW (play BB)
8 in BGW 35 (salah cap vs WBA)
7/11 in DGW 37 Just need to save enough FTs between 35-37 for double and sorted (play TC - kane?!)

I think if your playing your WC now you've done a good job of including players that will play, (no bench fodder). Though flexibility will come at a cost - i.e getting Kane back, or the multiple variations that could occur when we find out about DGW's.
