Line-up Lessons – Gameweek 32 – Part One

Alvaro Morata fires Chelsea’s opener at home to Spurs in just his second start in eight league matches. Elsewhere, Chris Wood marks his first start since Gameweek 19 by netting Burnley’s winner at West Brom, while Henrikh Mkhitaryan becomes the latest Arsenal player to be afforded a bench role ahead of Europa League duties.

Here’s part one of Line-up Lessons, assessing the teamsheets and formations from the Gameweek 32 matches, with one eye on what’s to come from the midweek European matches and beyond.

Arsenal

Starting XI: Ospina; Bellerin, Mustafi, Chambers, Monreal; Wilshere (Mkhitaryan 76), Elneny (Xhaka 76) Ramsey; Ozil, Welbeck (Lacazette 61); Aubameyang. Subs not used: Koscielny, Iwobi, Kolasinac, Macey.

  • What we saw: Gunners boss Arsene Wenger again rested players against Stoke City ahead of the UEFA Europa League quarter-final first leg against CSKA Moscow. Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey were both fit to start in central midfield in a 4-3-3 system, but Laurent Koscielny was left on the bench, with Calum Chambers starting in central defence. Petr Cech was ruled out due to a groin injury, so David Ospina started in goal. Granit Xhaka and Henrikh Mkhitaryan only came on as late substitutes, while Alexandre Lacazette returned from injury to play the last half hour. He was stationed as the lone striker, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shifted out onto the left wing.
  • What we learned: With the home clash against Southampton coming just three days after the first leg against CSKA, and with the second leg following just four days later in Russia, Wenger could again preserve key players against Saints. Chambers may retain his start ahead of Koscielny, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Sead Kolasinac are viable starters in the full-back positions. Having only played 14 minutes against the Potters, Xhaka appears a more likely starter in Gameweek 33, with Ramsey perhaps most at risk of dropping to the bench. Mkhitaryan also looks a more likely starter next weekend following his brief cameo appearance, while Alex Iwobi could also come into contention. Wilshere and Danny Welbeck, who picked up a back problem against the Potters, may be possible rotation risks. But Aubameyang is ineligible to play in Europe and should retain his start in attack. Lacazette may well now start on Thursday night, making a substitute appearance likely once again on Sunday. If fit, Cech should replace Ospina in goal.

Current Status: Unsettled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, defence, central midfield, flanks, attacking midfield

Bournemouth

Starting XI: Begovic; Fraser, S Cook, Ake, Daniels; Stanislas (Pugh 45), L Cook, Gosling, Ibe (Defoe 67); King; Wilson (Surman 81). Subs not used: Boruc; Arter, Simpson, B Smith.

  • What we saw: With Adam Smith (knee) and Simon Francis (hamstring) both ruled out for the trip to Watford, Eddie Howe handed a start to Ryan Fraser at right-back. The Cherries boss kept faith in a 4-4-1-1 formation, although he was forced into making a change on the stroke of half-time. Junior Stanislas had to be replaced after suffering a knee injury, seeing substitute Marc Pugh take over on the left wing. Trailing 2-1, Howe switched to an attacking 4-3-3, with substitute Jermain Defoe joining Josh King and Callum Wilson up front. But he soon reverted back to a 4-4-1-1, with Andrew Surman brought on for Wilson.
  • What we learned: Stanislas looks very likely to miss Saturday’s home meeting with Crystal Palace, while Lys Mousset (illness) is still a worry ahead of Saturday. So if Francis remains sidelined, and Fraser is subsequently required to continue at right-back, Pugh appears a likely starter on the left side of midfield. Alternatively, an attacking move would be to use King on the left wing, allowing Defoe to join Wilson up front in a 4-4-2. Defoe made a strong claim for a starting berth by scoring a late equaliser at Vicarage Road and is putting real pressure on Wilson for the lone striker role.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, left wing, lone striker

Brighton & Hove Albion

Starting XI: Ryan; Schelotto, Duffy, Dunk, Bong; Locadia (March 75), Kayal (Baldock 84), Propper, Izquierdo; Gross; Murray. Subs not used: Krul, Bruno, Hemed, Goldson, Suttner.

  • What we saw: Chris Hughton was again without the injured Dale Stephens for the home encounter against Leicester City, so Beram Kayal retained his place in central midfield in the usual 4-4-1-1 formation. Jurgen Locadia came in for the suspended Anthony Knockaert on the right side of midfield. After falling 1-0 behind, Hughton introduced Sam Baldock, seeing the Seagulls switch to a 4-4-2. Baldock joined Glenn Murray up front, while Pascal Gross dropped back into central midfield.
  • What we learned: Despite the 2-0 defeat, the Brighton side is expected to remain pretty settled. Up next is a home meeting with Huddersfield Town. Solly March provides a possible alternative to Locadia on the right wing with Knockaert still suspended, while Stephens should come back into the side in place of Kayal if fit. On-loan forward Leonardo Ulloa will be available for Gameweek 33 after being ineligible to face his parent club, but he’s unlikely to push for a start ahead of Murray.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, right wing

Burnley

Starting XI: Pope; Lowton, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward; Lennon, Westwood, Cork, Nkoudou (Hendrick 69); Wood (Vokes 77), Barnes. Subs not used: Lindegaard, Taylor, Marney, Bardsley, Long.

  • What we saw: With Johann Berg Gudmundsson absent due to a calf injury picked up in training on Friday, Sean Dyche handed a start to Georges-Kevin Nkoudou on the left side of midfield against West Bromwich Albion. Chris Wood was recalled alongside Ashley Barnes up front in a 4-4-2, with Jeff Hendrick dropping to the bench. The Republic of Ireland international entered the fray during the second half, playing on the right side of midfield, seeing Aaron Lennon move across to the left.
  • What we learned: Providing Gudmundsson is fit to return at Watford on Saturday, he should replace Nkoudou out wide for the Clarets. Hendrick may again be left on the bench unless he’s considered to replace Ashley Westwood in central midfield. After both getting on the scoresheet, Barnes and Wood are set to continue in attack.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks

Chelsea

Starting XI: Caballero; Azpilicueta, Christensen, Rudiger; Moses (Giroud 81), Fabregas, Kante, Alonso (Emerson 83); Willian, Morata (Hudson-Odoi 88), Hazard. Subs not used: Eduardo, Cahill, Drinkwater, Bakayoko.

  • What we saw: Thibaut Courtois failed to recover from a hamstring injury in time for the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to Stamford Bridge, so Willy Caballero started in goal. Cesc Fabregas was preferred to Tiemoue Bakayoko and Danny Drinkwater in central midfield, while Alvaro Morata was handed the lone striker role. The Blues ended the match in a 4-2-3-1, with substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi stationed on the left of the attacking midfield trio, while fellow substitute Olivier Giroud operated as the lone striker. Cesar Azpilicueta moved to right-back after Victor Moses was withdrawn.
  • What we learned: Despite the disappointing 3-1 defeat, Antonio Conte lacks the options to make changes for Sunday’s home fixture against West Ham United. With a week to prove his fitness, Courtois may be ready to return in goal in place of Caballero, though, while after getting on the scoresheet, Morata could retain his place up front. Bakayoko and Drinkwater are possible starters in central midfield in place of Fabregas, while Gary Cahill provides cover at the back. Davide Zappacosta missed out on Sunday with a tendon problem but could return to challenge Victor Moses’ start. Meanwhile, Pedro could also return having missed the Spurs defeat with a training ground injury.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Goalkeeper, central midfield

Crystal Palace

Starting XI: Hennessey; Wan-Bissaka (Fosu-Mensah 88), Kelly, Sakho, van Aanholt; McArthur, Milivojevic, Cabaye (Loftus-Cheek 73); Townsend, Benteke, Zaha. Subs not used: Cavalieri, Lee Chung-Yong, Souare, Delaney, Riedewald.

  • What we saw: Roy Hodgson chose to go with a 4-3-3 formation for the home clash against Liverpool, with Wilfried Zaha fit to start on the left of the front three. Yohan Cabaye returned in central midfield, while Martin Kelly came in for the injured James Tomkins in central defence.
  • What we learned: Following another encouraging performance without reward, Hodgson is expected to name a similar starting XI for Saturday’s trip to Bournemouth. The Eagles boss may consider starting with a slightly more attacking 4-4-2, though, with Zaha joining Christian Benteke up front, while Ruben Loftus-Cheek is perhaps an option to start on the left wing. Alexander Sorloth missed out again on the weekend due to a hamstring problem, and he remains a doubt ahead of Gameweek 33. Tomkins should return in place of Kelly if he’s passed fit, while Timothy Fosu-Mensah continues to offer an alternative to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at right-back.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defence, flanks, forwards

Everton

Starting XI: Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Jagielka, Baines; Walcott, Schneiderlin, Rooney (Davies 57), Bolasie; Tosun (Niasse 79), Calvert-Lewin (Baningime 75). Subs not used: Robles, Martina, Funes Mori, Vlasic.

  • What we saw: Sam Allardyce decided to use a 4-4-2 formation for the home fixture against Manchester City, deploying Dominic Calvert-Lewin alongside Cenk Tosun up front. With Idrissa Gueye ruled out due to a muscle problem, Morgan Schneiderlin partnered Wayne Rooney in central midfield. The Toffees ended the match in a 4-3-3, with Beni Baningime brought on to reinforce the midfield.
  • What we learned: Everton face a Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Goodison Park next. Gueye was close to being fit against Man City, so he will be expected to be available. A more defensive 4-3-3 may be an option from the start, then, with Gueye joining Schneiderlin and one of Rooney or Tom Davies in the middle of the park. Calvert-Lewin could be the player to make way. The rest of the line-up looks settled, although Ramiro Funes Mori was named among the substitutes against City, and may yet challenge for a start in central defence.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, flanks

Huddersfield Town

Starting XI: Lossl; Smith (Mounie 83), Schindler, Jorgensen, Kongolo; Hogg, Mooy; Kachunga (Quaner 56), Pritchard, van La Parra (Malone 86); Depoitre. Subs not used: Billing, Coleman, Ince, Hadergjonaj.

  • What we saw: David Wagner rang the changes following the 2-0 defeat to Crystal Palace for the trip to Newcastle United. Laurent Depoitre was recalled in place of Steve Mounie as the lone striker in the usual 4-2-3-1 formation, while Elias Kachunga and Rajiv van La Parra returned out wide. Aaron Mooy was fit to start at the base of midfield, the fit-again Terence Kongolo returned at left-back, while Tommy Smith was recalled at right-back. Kachunga had to be replaced just before the hour mark after picking up an ankle injury, however, with Collin Quaner his replacement. After falling behind, Wagner brought on Mounie to play alongside Depoitre in attack.
  • What we learned: Kachunga is expected to miss Saturday’s trip to Brighton & Hove Albion, so either Quaner or Tom Ince look set to start on the right wing. Mounie could push for a recall in attack, while Wagner may also consider starting both he and Depoitre up front in a 4-4-2. In defence, Florent Hadergjonaj is an option to return at right-back in place of Smith. Philip Billing could be a viable starter in central midfield if the Terriers’ boss switches to a 4-3-3.

Current Status: Slightly Unsettled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central midfield, right wing, lone striker

Leicester City

Starting XI: Schmeichel; Simpson, Morgan, Maguire, Chilwell; Mahrez (Fuchs 85), Iborra, Ndidi, Albrighton (Gray 79); Okazaki (Diabate 56), Vardy. Subs not used: Jakupovic, Iheanacho, Silva, Dragovic.

  • What we saw: Claude Puel handed a recall to Shinji Okazaki for the trip to Brighton, with the Japanese international starting in the support striker role in the usual 4-4-1-1 system. But with the match goalless, he was the first player to be replaced, making way for Fousseni Diabate in a straight swap just before the hour mark. Christian Fuchs entered the fray late on, playing at left-back, with Ben Chilwell pushed forward onto the left wing. That meant that substitute Demarai Gray was stationed on the right side of midfield.
  • What we learned: After picking up all three points at the Amex Stadium, Puel is set to name a similar starting XI for Saturday’s home clash against Newcastle United. But he will be without the suspended Wilfred Ndidi, who was sent off for a second yellow card during the latter stages of Saturday’s match. Adrien Silva is the Nigerian’s likely replacement unless Matty James is available to return following an Achilles problem. Diabate, Gray and Kelechi Iheanacho are all possible alternatives to Okazaki in the support striker role.

Current Status: Settled
Risk Areas: Central midfield, support striker

Liverpool

Starting XI: Karius; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum (Lallana 65, Lovren 70); Salah, Firmino, Mane (Oxlade-Chamberlain 64). Subs not used: Mignolet, Clyne, Moreno, Ings.

  • What we saw: Jurgen Klopp named a strong side for the trip to Crystal Palace, despite Liverpool’s demanding schedule over the next few weeks. With Emre Can ruled out with a back injury, Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Georginio Wijnaldum lined up in central midfield in the usual 4-3-3 system. The thigh injury suffered by Adam Lallana saw Klopp switch to a 3-5-2 formation, with Dejan Lovren brought on to bolster the defence. Mohamed Salah joined Roberto Firmino up front, while substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was part of a three-man midfield.
  • What we learned: The Reds now host Manchester City in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final before Saturday’s Merseyside derby. The second leg then follows three days later. With Lallana’s injury set to rule him out for the rest of the season, Klopp perhaps lacks the options to rotate in attacking areas. However, the minutes of Salah, Firmino and Sadio Mane could be managed at Goodison Park. Oxlade-Chamberlain may be handed a start against Everton, with Can perhaps set to be saved for the European matches providing he can recover from a back problem. Lovren provides a viable alternative in central defence, while Nathaniel Clyne was back on the bench at the weekend, and could soon be a factor at right-back.

Current Status: Fairly Settled
Risk Areas: Right-back, central defence, central midfield

Part two of Line-up Lessons, assessing the remaining ten teams, will follow tomorrow.

Right chaps, 10 pts to catch up but on WC, BB34 and FH35 (rival only has BB).

    DDG Ryan
    Morgan Christensen Tarkowski (Lowton Smalling)
    Salah Mahrez Willian Gudmundsson (Cook)
    Kane Vardy Aube*

    * LUK FT next week.

Could also, for same price, do:

    1. Smalling / Gudmundsson > Lingard / Dunk (or other 4.5)

    2. Vardy / Gudmundsson > Barnes / Son

Would appreciate any thoughts as I have been scheming all day!!

Not really. I had a dead team for 2 months in my 1st season, used WC around Xmas for DGWs etc and smashed it. With luck and a good start, a late WC is massive.

How happy are you about how you have used your chips this season? What would you do different next year?

My season hasn't been great so far. I had a terrible start and have made some poor decisions. I'm currently around 126k OR.

I used my 1st Wildcard in GW7 and rose over 1.6m in OR over the next 2 GWs so I was very happy with that.

I used my TC on Kane in GW22 and got a massive 3pts from it. Definite fail.

I used my 2nd Wildcard in GW32. I didn't really have a choice as my squad was dreadful after bringing in all the wrong differentials for the BGW31. It was a long term plan but overall I think going a week early is a good strategy just to save money and to get an extra usable transfer before the DGW. I saved 0.5m (it could have been 0.8m with better planning) and was happy with a GW rank around 188k considering my team wasn't really set up for this week. I have 14 players with doubles for GW34 and should have 10 + Salah for GW37. The extra transfer means I can bring in Kane or Lukaku for free.

As planned i'll use my BB in DGW34. DGW37 could be better by I am too worried about rotation to risk it.

I'll use my FH in BGW35. This was the week when most people said it should be used when it was first announced. I was one of the dissenters and maintained that any GW is a possible FH week. I spent all season looking for creative ways to use it (I consider it the most powerful chip) but never quite found the ideal time. It turns out the ideal time is the one everybody thought it was because without it I would be fielding 4 players (3 of which I consider bench fodder) in BGW35. Obviously if I had used the FH chip I would have had to set up my wildcard differently but that would have meant a weaker squad for both the BGW and the DGWs.

I am delighted to still have all my chips.
decided quite early on my plan, and decided against 'dead ending' my team for the BGW31.
      Had a strong GW32. So I am going to be FH34, WC36 and BB37

I will have 11 out in BGW35 with just a minus 4. Which I am pleased with.

Delaying WC has meant I have gained so much more info than I could've hoped for - Keeping away from Willan and Chelsea in general, and Kane return has thrown a huge curveball

Lets see what the PL says about the remaining fixtures. Might still be a surprise in store.

That's a creative way of doing it. Good luck.

I don't think anything that happened last GW changed my plans. The only difference is I wouldn't be able to afford the team I picked this week.

        Ahh

        Well.
I think if over the next three games, it is still Kane.

Kane can score vs City, especially if they have nothing to play for. And Kane can easily score a couple vs brighten to get him back in the running for the Golden boot race.

Lukaku will score his standard one goal vs the weaker teams

Worth having them both for DGW34

Unfortunately I caught virtually every Kane 2pt'er earlier in the season when captaining...then managed to miss his hattricks...captaincy this year has been very poor for me.

Tried to beat the template, but nothing really worked.

Took hits to dig myself out...that made it worse.

            This season's been like quicksand!

      A. Pick mostly the template throughout the season with a few very well thought out differentials. Don’t pick differential players just for the sake of it.

      B. Recognise that the game is about probability and pick players based on their expected returns and underlying statistics. If you do this then even if your player scores badly, you still made the ‘correct’ decision based on the information available to you at the time without the benefit of hindsight.

      C. Use the first WC effectively - optimal time is usually GW6-8. Before that you may want to WC since your team is bad, but you’ll likely waste your WC since you don’t know who the best players are to get (so you’ll just be replacing bad players with more bad players).

      A) Being disciplined and only taking hits when you need to.
      B) Prioritizing points over pounds (e.g., don't make early transfers when midweek games are scheduled).
      C) Avoiding being too clever or stubborn with captaincy picks.

I'm good at A and B. I get too creative and don't always follow through on C (as evidence: I've captained Salah three times this season (three times!) and Kane 16; and I even captained Tadic once this season). I've been lucky enough, even with that flaw, to be part of that group you mentioned above.

      1. Don't take risks with captaincy, it should usually be the best player in your team.

      3. Play the fixtures when trying to innovate from the template.

Tips for finishing in the top 10k in the past aren't as useful for trying to finish there now. Consistency is good but it is no longer enough, perhaps it will help you finish in the top 50k.

To go from a solid top 50k to top 10k you need to differentiate yourself from the crowd at opportune moments. Mark did that well this week with Arnautovic for example.

You can no longer just follow the FFS template completely and blindly walk into the top 10k. You have to do something a little different every now and then and often that means being ahead of the curve and getting players that are about to hit form, not an easy thing to do.

      A. Learn how the mechanics of the game actually works. That means things like value (and how to assess it), the pros and cons of various squad structures and the price/performance landscapes they work best in, coverage, ownership, momentum, risk management and a whole host of other elements including the methods you will use to predict future player performance - who's on the up and who's on the downslope (or is likely to be). You can do this by making your own studies of these elements and/or by watching and analysing what managers that are better than you do.

      B. Always work on the quality of your judgement and decision-making; that is the very core of being a good FPL manager. That means being candid with yourself about your mistakes (which you will make a lot of). But don't confuse a bad outcome with a mistake. A mistake is a poor decision, not a reasonable or good decision that had a poor outcome.

      C. Develop a style of play that suits you. Not everyone has the same personality and different people have different tolerance to risk/reward for example. You can be successful in FPL through a variety of different approaches but what is important is that YOU know what you are doing and why rather than knee-jerking around copying other people. You have to steer your ship yourself in your own way and you will also enjoy it more if you do.

I put so much planning and preparation in at the beginning of the season and started slowly. At some point I stopped deeply reading and being influenced by what was written here and elsewhere and purely went with my own judgement. Result - circling around the top 1000 at the moment.

        Verdict:

        1. Luck
        2. Luck
        3. Luck

nb. we'll see next week if this holds - I've just Wildcarded, jettisoning players that have brought me tons (Sterling 167, Alonso 112, Azpil 102, Firmino 101) and brought in players with negligible ownership such as Chilwell, Kenedy and Dier.

If you stopped confusing yourself and just trusted your judgement then how is that luck?

All the things I wrote above only have to be done consciously while you are learning about them. Once you have then what you have learned steers your judgement without you necessarily having to calculate it, It's like learning to drive; first you have to do it consciously but later most of it becomes automatic.

That's a good example. I don't think I'm contradicting you, just placing more emphasis on the luck factor.

I've been playing FPL since reading the prices in newspapers and phoning in my transfers, yet never have I put less research in and obtained such a high position. You might say experience counts yet 2 years ago I had a woeful season.

I am no expert , but this season have been over achieving . Mostly cause I didn't really listen to the crowd here.( Eg Kane was a must for the first half of the season ). Went with my gut feeling 9/10 times. And that's it.

Rest everything is covered by many of the people here.

      Tips from a top 11.5k player 🙂

      A. Learn when to hedge and when not to. Try to own the two highest-scoring players regardless of who you captain, but avoid defenders who play your attackers, especially at the start of the season or on wildcard, as this limits points.

      B. Decide your priorities and fight for them alone. I missed out on top 10k by picking a differential captain in a late DGW last season in an ultimately futile attempt to beat the leader of my ML. Had I realised 10k was considered a magic club round here I would have done things differently.

      C. Never bench Alonso.

Advice from a dullard and remembering that the question was about consistent 10kr finishes and not winning FPL:

      1. No need to differentiate: Over a full season there is no stable template being used by thousands of managers, so do not worry about differentiating for the sake of it. The only time I would advice breaking the template is when you think that the numbers back up a "differential" (usually someone just outside the template pick). No one cares about your one week punt success in the end as it is likely to be followed by multiple failures down the line. Same logic applies to picking a captain (again when picking 38 captains you will differentiate by default no matter what your picks are).

      2. Stop trying to be smart and plan for the unexpected: Expect injuries and surprises and build your team accordingly, i.e. do not pick a player for 1-3 GWs with the intention to then transfer that player out as by that time you will have to use your FTs for other things. There are the rare exceptions to this, for example, WC32, BB34 and FH35 when you know you have to burn 2FTs in GW34 and thus you might take a calculated risk (such as Auba).

      3. The logic of the game differs season by season - Last season was the season of build TV with a highly fluctuated market. It was also the season you should break the 3-4-3 template and go for 3-5-2. This season flexibilty in formation has been key (even 4-4-2 at the start of the season) and TV seemingly harder to build (so you should hold FTs longer as the value of early FTs is less while the risk is the same as previous season). Understand the basics of the game and then adapt quickly to what is unique about a particular season.

*hadn't given 2 much thought but it makes sense. My Bernardo Silva pick is a good example recently. His returns have been OK but he has got 0-1 a couple of times too and he's been one transfer in and one out for not much return.

Guaranteed top 10k IMO if you: a. Captain scout poll leader and own 4 of the top 6 in the poll every week. b. Pick scout team for gw 1 and wildcard after gw1 for hot starters/season keepers. c. No hits.

      A) Understand that in the short term the *decision* is what's important, not necessarily the outcome.

      B) Accept you can't own them all.

      1. Limited & Mediocre Mana…

        (hit post by accident)

        B) Every week I see people asking if they should year their squad apart with multiple transfers, for the sake of one player who overperformed in the previous week. Maybe they are the best option this week, but you have to be able to assess the expected points, not just get scared to miss out on an unexpected hall again.

        C) Factor ownership into your decisions. Can't believe I'm saying this as I argued against this last season, but ownership certainly becomes more of a factor later in the season. Because we have the whole season of information behind us, the total FPL points are truer indicators of future points than early season, so ownership on average better correlates to future points. This doesn't mean you have to have all the most owned players, but to understand where you are likely to be punished for not owning certain players at certain times.

      A. Plan well but be proactive when your plan does not work (which generally means taking hits to deviate from initial plan)
      B. Start is very important, if you do not start well, don't be too late to use the 1st WC.
      C. No need to differentiate that much. Stats and probabilities are key for the 10K finish. Luck and differentials may be needed for top 1K but not necessary for top 10K.
      D. Don't stick to your findings from previous seasons that much, every season is different.
      E. Don't be too stubborn and prejudiced against some players (Me vs. Yaya Toure and Ramsey in 2013/14 - I never had them and cost me the worst ranking ever)

      1. Stats. If you can see who is in the right place at the right time consistently before the masses see them scoring big, you’ll always be a week ahead of most.
      2. Strap your knees down. Don’t get someone in just because they hauled this week. Get them in because they are consistently getting it right on the pitch. See point 1.
      3. Get lucky. You can put everything you have into planning, stats, strategies and punts, but sometimes the real world of actual humans playing unpredictable football will let you down. Sometimes you need to make 50/50 calls and you’ll get them all wrong. It’s not a guarantee.

FPL is a gambling game. There’s not a magic bullet to get it right 100% of the time; there is only a list of things that have worked in the past to try and eliminate all the edge cases and cut down the margins so you gamble with a smaller number of variables.

(This from someone who has never bothered the top 10k)

      A. Understand every season is different and that is still a game of relatively fine margins. This can make your weakest player nearly as important your stronger ones. Add 2/3 pts to your weekly scores so far and see what it does to your current rank.

      B. There is no "one size fits all" approach. e.g. Ridiculous to say don't take hits, rigidly stick to a certain formation etc.
Game itself is fluid throughout the season (due to runs of fixtures & form) so have to be able to adapt & plan.

      C. Are no shortcuts. You do have to plan and you do have to put some time into it to do well over a season/seasons.

      Be aware of:
      A. Hindsight bias (don’t rage transfer out if next week looks good)
      B. Group think (don’t make transfers just because they are popular)
      C. Anchoring (ignoring good choices because you don’t like the player or team or everyone in your league already has them)

Prob don't fit the criteria of consistent 10k finishes, but on route to get in for a third time this season. The most deciding factor is probably luck, because 2-3 50/50 decisions during a season could be the difference between a 50k and 10k finish.

      A)
      Be calm.
If you've planned well and don't start the season with an awful team, then don't start ripping your team apart just because your rank is'nt were you want it to be. Moving funds up and down the pitch, selecting new formations, trying to jump on every player that looks hot, accumulating minuspoints and shipping away the players one so carefully selected ahead of the season will not help your OR at all.
      B)
      Value.
Probably related to A, because the ugly nagging stepsister to being calm is the need to acummulate wealth for further down the road. If you dont, then suddenly, come buisness end of the season, those who did wil have a much stronger squad then your's. For both A and B to work one has to be smart about it. Will the player in your squad come back around to make up for losing value? Will the player whose transfertrends say is due to rise actually add the points aswell? - Dificult excersise.
      C)
Getting your money on the pitch.
The players within the game have different prices for a reason. Their price is supposed to syymbolize how much pts one can expect to get in return for investing in the player. Selecting players that are prone to rotation leaves money on the bench and not the field. Selecting a strategy thats based on benching players that exceeds a lot more than the minimum of each position can also be detrimental. However one also has to be confident that the players coming off the bench have outside chances of giving returns.

GW 34 and 37 should be used for TC and BB. The question is when to use each! I am seriously leaning towards using my BB in GW 37 and using TC in 34. Lukaku (WBA/bou) in 34 looks like the best and last opportunity to use TC. City in 37 (HUD/BHA) looks better but who do you choose?

Free hit chip guidance seems a bit contradictory:

After playing your Free Hit chip, at the next deadline your bank balance and squad is restored to as they were at the previous deadline, with any player price changes in the previous gameweek reflected.

Any change to your bank balance whilst the Free Hit chip was active will be lost.

What does it mean by any change to bank balance will be lost?(yet it starts by saying it will be restored to original balance)Anyone able to clarify this?

    Thanks

Basically you cant make profit off any players brought in using your FH chip so if you do the bank balance will revert to what it was prior to FH.

Anything for a hit lads? On a -4 currently

    Keane > Mee/Tarko/Christensen?

Wildcard and BB only chips remaining. Plan to WC in 35 and BB in 37.

    Lloris
    Smalling - Maguire - Robertson
    Salah - Mahrez - Zaha - Milivojevic
    Kane(c) - Lukaku - Vardy

Bench: Elliot - McArthur - Keane - Kenny
