The king is dead, long live the old one.

Well, Mohamed Salah isn’t actually pushing up the Fantasy daisies, nor pining for the non-existent Egyptian fjords, he’s merely devoid of a Double Gameweek 34 to demand selection by our panel of Fantasy Football Scout regulars Mark, Paul and Jonty and Career Hall of Fame number one Peter Kouwenberg.

In his stead, up steps last year’s free-scoring midfield points-hoover Alexis Sanchez, who finds himself the number one pick of three of our four Scouts, with Paul ploughing a lone furrow by ignoring him completely.

At least there’s universal agreement that Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku should double up in attack, with Jamie Vardy the unanimous third choice should 3-4-3 be the formation du Gameweek.

Peter seems to have blown much of the rest of his budget offering up both David De Gea and Thibaut Courtois for the goalkeeper selection (with his third choice, Kasper Schmeichel, not exactly cheap at 5.1 either), and a good deal of cash is also likely to be splurged on the quartet’s top defensive pick, Marcos Alonso.

The budget enablers that will be needed to fund all this extravagance is likely to be the hottest topic of debate among our panel.

We’ll be back later in the week to see which of their selections make the final cut for Double Gameweek 34, and in the meantime, here are their reasons why they’ve said no to Mo along with their other, rather less vexed, considerations.

Peter Says…

To start with the bleeding obvious, with eight teams enjoying a Double Gameweek (catnip to the discerning Fantasy manager) it’s going to take something pretty special (or cheap) for a player with a single match to break into our 18-man squads.

Mohamed Salah certainly ticks that first box, having scored 83 points more than his nearest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) rival, and yet I have to omit him this week knowing that the budget is going to take a hefty pounding from the likes of Spurs, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Instead, the pocket-friendly trio of Andrew Robertson, Kiko Femenía and Marko Arnautović constitute my singleton makeweights, coming in at a combined £16.3 million and facing up to Bournemouth, Huddersfield and Stoke City respectively.

Also helping to balance the books are Kasper Schmeichel, Matt Lowton, Chris Wood and Glenn Murray, the latter facing a somewhat mixed double of Crystal Palace and Spurs but, along with Wood, surely representing the best value striker in the sub-6.5 category this week.

And so to the big guns from Stamford Bridge, the King Power Stadium, Wembley and Old Trafford, who will likely make up the lion’s share of most active managers’ squads this weekend.

David De Gea looks a great bet for 12+ points as United host the forlorn Baggies before heading to the Vitality Stadium.

Indeed, West Brom and Bournemouth are two of five sides who have conceded the most (12) goals in their last six matches, which is enough to justify in-form Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku joining the Spaniard in my picks.

Of course, whether José Mourinho lets his horses run free, particularly with one eye on the FA Cup semi-final, remains to be seen.

My nine remaining slots are filled by FPL stalwarts such as Christian Eriksen, Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Harry “who stole my goal?” Kane, all of whom require no further explanation.

In contrast, although Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso and Willian will carry the hopes of many an FPL manager, I would understand it if funds were diverted towards other assets in the final selection.

Despite the Spaniard’s meagre average return of 1.5 points over his last six matches and Willian’s recent profligacy in front of goal, they both still make my cut.

Paul Says…

I’ve loaded up on Double Gameweek 34 players, with slight concerns over Salah’s minutes against Bournemouth enough to force me to look elsewhere.

If any budget defence is worthy of a double-up, it’s Burnley – hence the reason for the inclusion of two of their back four, along with goal threats Alonso and Harry Maguire.

As discussed in our recent Big Numbers article, the Clarets are ranked fourth most resilient for goals against (seven) since Gameweek 25 onwards, and fifth for big chances conceded (12).

Eriksen is the only Spurs player to already record points against both his upcoming opponents. Furthermore, the Dane is joint-top for both shots and key passes over their previous four and therefore is my midfield pick from Mauricio Pochettino’s contingent.

Lukaku’s flat-track bully record is more than persuasive – 14 of his 15 league goals have been scored against teams outside the top eight. Yet Paul Pogba’s upturn in output and underlying threat, as covered in today’s Monitor piece on Alexis Sanchez, could be the value option.

United host a Baggies defence with just a single clean sheet in their last 15 road trips, while midweek opponents Bournemouth have managed one shut-out in 13 attempts at the Vitality. After defeating City to prevent them taking the title, Jose Mourinho’s men will head into their pair of matches brimming with confidence.

As evidenced by his impact off the bench at Arsenal, Charlie Austin’s contribution will be vital if Southampton are to beat the drop.

He’s played a part in 70% of the Saints’ goals when on the pitch and has found the net every 100 minutes this season – only Sergio Aguero has scored at a quicker rate.

Jonty Says…

The Wildcard template picks have proved far from lucrative ahead of double Gameweek 34.

Brighton’s Pascal Gross, Chelsea’s Willian and Alonso and Leicester City’s Riyad Mahrez have now blanked for two matches in a row, much to the annoyance of their new owners.

Despite their recent failures, I believe the Double Gameweek offers them the chance of redemption. This is, after all, why they were recruited in the first place.

That Chelsea pair, Leicester’s playmaker and Spurs’ Son Heung-min all earn another nod from me.

But I’ve finally lost patience with Gross, who fails to make the cut. The Seagulls’ derby encounter with Crystal Palace is tough to call, while their Spurs match-up is simply too tough.

I like the look of United pair Lukaku and Sanchez, as well as the Golden Boot-chasing Kane.

But as I’ve found out with my own team, owning all three is tricky given their lofty price-tags. Reluctantly, I’ll back any of my colleagues who want to shun Sanchez as I believe Kane and Lukaku, as the focal point of their sides’ attacking play and the expected top captaincy picks, are vital for our selection.

Another issue is whether to include a single Gameweek asset.

Salah’s goal against Man City in the Champions League on Tuesday proves he is fit enough to start against Bournemouth. After delivering a 29-point haul in his last home league match, against Watford, he has an ample chance to outgun his Double Gameweek counterparts.

Burnley looks the perfect destination for budget enablers, so I think one of Ashley Barnes or a defender, with Matt Lowton my favoured option, may be needed if we are to squeeze the Double Gameweek’s pricier assets into our 84m budget.

I’ve also put forward Southampton’s Cedric Soares and Austin for consideration, after the former picked up two assists and the latter a goal in the Saints’ visit to Arsenal on Sunday.

Mark Says…

Having just come round to captaining Salah, I’m now fully signed up to Jonty’s fan club for the Egyptian, so I’ll be fighting hard to get him re-installed in Friday’s Picks line-up.

Today’s reaction to the decision to award Kane “his” goal illustrates that this Golden Boot malarky matters to both players.

Salah will be buoyant after Tuesday’s result and his sublime finish. Meanwhile, Bournemouth might just provide a perfect target for any frustration aimed at the goal accreditation panel.

The unpredictable Cherries could either shock us all and smash and grab a 1-0, or capitulate spectacularly to the Liverpool tide and allow Salah to fill his boots. The latter seems more likely, which is why the 39-goal man is ranked third in my midfield selection.

I honestly feel that he can hold his own in the Double Gameweek circus with just 70 minutes against Eddie Howe’s obliging defence. Let’s face it; he is that good.

This doesn’t mean I’m turning my back on Kane. Somewhat controversially for some, I’ve placed him at the top of the striker pile, though Lukaku and Vardy look shoo-ins alongside him.

If we have to cheapen up the frontline, then I’ll push hard for Austin’s inclusion.

He might only get a sniff or two against Chelsea and Leicester, but that’s all he needs. He has six goals from his last six starts and has scored every 100 minutes.

Not even my Harry can match that.

The Community Champion

Representing the community against the Scouts in Gameweek 30 will be veteran poster Effe. He is in his 11th season, with 2010/11’s impressive finish of 240 his best to date.

The community champion who has the best lead over the Scouts during 2017/18 will win a £100 Amazon voucher (currently we can only offer Amazon.co.uk or Amazon.com vouchers).

Last week’s champion Big Red Dog beat the Scouts 81-74

The one to beat remains Gregor, who achieved victory over the Scouts by a 33-point margin in Gameweek 5.

    No WC, BB this week, FH next week, TC Week 37, 0.0 ITB, 2 FT

    DDG, McCarthy
    Alonso, Christensen, Simpson, Lowton, Tarkowski
    Mahrez, Salah, Son, Willian, Hojbjerg
    Lukaku, Vardy, Barnes

    Thinking the right move is to sell Salah now, use him for FH next week, to fund Kane moving forward (but not over Lukaku this week due to fixtures)

    a) Salah->Pogba -- puts 2.5 ITB, and guarantees me Lukaku->Kane in GW36
    b) Salah+Son -> Eriksen+Pogba -- puts 1.4 ITB and lets me go Lukaku->Kaku in GW36 if neither changes (Lukaku 11.5, Kane 12.9)
    c) Salah->Eriksen -- puts 0.9 ITB, can get Kane with double swap in GW37
    d) Salah->Alli -- puts 1.3 ITB, chance at Lukaku->Kane in GW36 (if he drops/Lukaku goes up, but that's unlikely) or can double swap in GW37
    e) Salah+Alonso -> Azpi+Alli -- puts 1.6 ITB and should guarantee me Lukaku->.Kane in GW36
    f) Salah+Christensen -> Eriksen+Morgan -- puts 1.8 ITB and guarantees me Lukakue->Kane in GW36
    g) Salah+Christensen -> Pogba+Maguire -- puts 2.2 ITB and guarantees me Lukakue->Kane in GW36

    Thoughts?

        Yeah, I know, sorry! Let me narrow it down to 3:

        a) Salah->Eriksen
        b) Salah+Christensen -> Eriksen + Morgan/Yoshida/Cedric
        c) Salah+Christensen -> Pogba + Maguire/Vertonghten/Bailly

        (a) means I can't get Kane until double swap GW37. (b)/(c) means I can, potentially with room to upgrade elsewhere.

      Do what you believe in the end but since you're asking for input I have to disagree with most others (it seems?),

      I wouldn't go for neither of the decisions you've suggested. I would personally TC Salah this week if I had him (I sold him last GW because I thought it was worth getting three games vs one. I either sold last GW, or not until gw37, unless there were any injuries of course).

      Even if you don't want to put the C on him I would say that if you kept him through last game week, for god's sake keep him for this one.

      Everybody's talking about Kane due to Golden boot race, but it seems like they're forgetting that he isn't alone in that race. Sarah also wants to win it, and Bournemouth at home with a whole weeks rest until the next game would not be a game I would remove him for. Not for anyone.

      Don't you have any other player to downgrade?

      Is selling Salah your only option? I wouldn't be surprised if he scored near 20p this GW, but who knows.

      Either way, best of luck, but that's my two cents.

        Seems crazy to me to TC Salah this week, given Champions League priority (yes Golden Boot is a counter), when I can TC Kane vs wba/NEW GW37. Salah's obviously great, but 2 games of Kane against even worse opponents seems like a better bet. Plus, I've planned my whole team around getting 15 DGW players (Salah being the only possible exception), so I'm gonna do that I think.

        My team is above -- I could downgrade Mahrez or Son, but...they both have 2 DGW. I guess I could go
        v) Son+Christensen -> Pogba+Maguire
        w) Son+Christensen -> Alli+Yoshida/Cedric
        x) Mahrez+Christensen->Eriksen+Yoshida/Cedric
        y) Mahrez+Christensen->Alli+Yoshida/Cedric
        z) Mahrez+Christensen->Pogba+Vertonghen/Bailly/Cedric

          Of course! Should've been clearer; meant that I would've TC'd Salah if I had him this week because I'm BB in GW37 and therefor TC this week. Otherwise I agree with you that Kane in GW37 > Salah in this (or any other) GW.

          I understand the thinking behind it, I just don't agree with it 🙂 Imo, if you didn't get rid of Salah last GW, don't do it this one. I think he has a faire chance of scoring higher than just about anybody this GW.

          Since you already have Vardy and Mahrez have blanked in his last couple of GWs, maybe downgrade him?

          Personally though, I'd downgrade Son. That has nothing to do with his ability, only with presumed game time.

          It's true that he has two games, but 1. one of them is against City and 2. it's quite possible that he'll play about the same amount of minutes as Salah.

          He generally performs better at home, and the last time he was benched was in an away game against a lower placed team. They also have the FA Cup semi a few days after brighton.

          It's possible that he'll start the home game and be benched for the other, which would mean that you're choosing Son vs City over Salah vs Bournemouth.

          Of course he could play both, and he could score against any team. But since we're playing probabilities I would say that there's a higher chance of Salah scoring this GW than that Son does.

          However I understand that you might also want to weigh in how you want you're squad to look post GW35 as well. But for now I'd at least definitely have kept Salah (had I have still had him).

          Out of the options you listed in your last post my personal favorite is Z (as long as you're defender isn't Cedric), followed by X (if you get a defender that doesn't play for southampton. I wouldn't pick them even if they had three game weeks) Especially since you already have a Soton' player represented in your squad. That's more than plenty imo 🙂

            That all makes sense, you're selling me here, and you are right I have been pretty let down by Mahrez.

            For Z, I definitely meant Maguire not Cedric. Would you pick Vertonghen, Bailly, or Maguire?
            For X, I could actually go Mahrez+Christensen -> Eriksen+Morgan/Chilwell too, if we think SOT is awful

            Would you pick either of those over a straight Mahrez->Pogba swap? Between the Pogba options, question is basically, what's more valuable:

            a) Lukaku->Kane in GW36 (instead of just 37)
            b) Christensen->Maguire/Vertonghen/Bailly for DGW34+GW36 (and potentially 37 and 38, since I have more double swap options going into GW37)

              I suppose I also just thought of one (last, final last?) option: a simple Mahrez+Son->Pogba+Eriksen. Do those upgrades do more than upgrading Christensen?

      I honestly think a lot depends on the result of the first game(s).

      If he/they win and perform well, I think he'll start the next one as well (but might get subbed off with 30 minutes left), especially if spurs lose to city as well. Even though it's distant I think they'll give it a last go for the final four (and I only said spurs and not Liverpool because spurs have city while liverpool, well... don't. but of course the same applies if liverpool were to drop points on saturday.)

      But then again, Conte has surprised us more than once this season so he could also start do everything from playing Hazard as a lone striker/target to benching him.

    IF you do not have your FH left but have Auba + Lukaku, I see absolutely not reason why people are trying to hard to get Kane in.

    1) I think Lukaku is the better captaincy option this week.
    2) Auba's two games are great over the next two, Kane's 2 this week are one of each.
    3) Without the FH you're likely to be short for GW35, so saving a transfer on this (and another one for bringing Auba back in), gives you 2 extra players in GW35, and 1 more game over the the two GWs..

        Lukaku can become Kane for GW36, but using a transfer to bring him in when he has the same number of games over the next two as Auba seems silly without a FH (which is silly to not have as well).

        TC'ing GW34, BB'ing GW35 with 15 DGWers (bench of Duvbraka, Ayew, Fernandez, Kenedy)

    Current team with 2 FT and plan on using BB this weekend (no FH for 35 either)..thoughts appreciated

    DDG
    Lowton - Smalling - Mustafi
    Salah - Willian - Son - Mahrez - Gudmonsson
    Lukaku (C) - Auba

    Henn-Barnes-Morgan-Robertson

    .6 ITB

    Thinking Mustafi > Vert or Auba and Salah > Kane and 8.2 (Silva)?

      Think about the number of games you get out of your team over the next 2 weeks, not this week or GW35 separately.

      You've got 3 transfers to maximize the amounts of games played.

      Probably is a penalty, but vasquez did go down pretty easily.

      To be fair to benatia as well, he had an insanely difficult to make in terms of whether to try to challenge like that or hope buffon can save it himself.

        Its a tough challenge to make. Quite similar to the one Kante had in the Prem last match. Player behind the opposition tries to get the ball without fouling the attacker. Kantes' was probably a bit easier as the ball was at the ground level if I remember correctly but he did a marvelous job.

        This gets called every day everywhere around the pitch. Penalty foul is just a foul. Doesnt need to be harsher for it to be a penalty than your regular foul.

      Was a penalty and probably a 2nd yellow for Banatia. Was coming to Vasquez at chest high so he still had to bring it down so Banatia would have had time to get goalside and between him and gigi, had a decent chance of stopping him fairly. Still think real would have won in ET anyway.

      It was a penalty all day long.

      The defender gets caught wrong side and tried to go through his man.

      Seems like everything has to be deemed as controversial or require VAR to be confirmed as correct.

      It was correct and not much of a discussion point.

    Ayew only has a SGW this week, but a great DGW in 37. FH in 35.

      Kane and Lingard long-term. Tbf, I'm tempted by Kane and Son.

      1. Rik Waller
        • 8 Years

        Yeh, I think so. I haven't looked into losing him tbh.

        If I get Kane and Lingard, I'll get Son back in for Salah after the FH.
        If I get Lukaku and change Mustafi to Dunk, I'll get Kane in after the FH.
        Can't decide...

        1. Prøfeßör …

          I feel your pain, I can't choose either.

          For me, no Lukaku could backfire but it's the same with no Kane. The way I see it, when it's such a close decision, I'd probably rather not have a planned transfer for GW 36 (if Salah is out too, this means an instant hit). Not sure though.

          I posted the below this morning for some more thoughts behind the Groß out idea:

          A) Son & Milivojević (or someone cheaper)
          B) Lingard & Groß

          B may score more in GW 34 but I'm leaning with A long-term. B means Groß (and £6m) will likely be stuck in my team for the rest of the season, but Lingard provides Man United attacking 'cover.' Son means I'm blocked from getting in Eriksen or Alli for GW 36.

            So many permutations all of a sudden.

            I was set on Mustafi + Auba > Dunk and Lukaku as my plan for a while, but now I'm thinking of about 20 different options.

            Might have to get the ol' pen and paper out for this one.
