Dugout Discussion – Spurs vs Man City

We end a marathon day of football at Wembley Stadium which provides a fitting finale as Tottenham Hotspur host champions elect Manchester City.

But it’s not Pep Guardiola’s City that hold the interest for Fantasy managers, as Harry Kane goes into tonight’s contest as the most signed player ahead for Gameweek 34 (255,000+) and wearing just over a million armbands.

Kane’s recent output has been hampered by injury, though having been awarded a controversial goal at Stoke City in Gameweek 33, he still boasts attacking returns in five of his previous starts.

Christian Eriksen has also proved a big draw ahead of this encounter, claiming 158,000 new owners before today’s deadline to edge ahead in the popularity pecking order in the Spurs midfield.

Son Heung-min may just have slipped down that ladder – he is benched today as Erik Lamela gets the nod. The South Korean will therefore likely start the away fixture with Brighton on Tuesday, though only three of his 12 goals this season have come on the road.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

      Judging by the rules it’s not, but in real life it kind of is.
      Don’t get me wrong but some ball bouncing is enough to steal an assist from the passer according to a quite unflexible rule.

      In real life it’s a thorugh ball, executed with the help of a rebound, according to the rules it’s 2 seperate chances and shots, which is not quite right. No assist though in fpl terms, it’s the rules.

      Clearly Eriksen doesn’t score if not for the pass from Kane to set the whole sequence up. The PL should take a lesson from the NHL on how they award assists. If the player recieving the pass scores regardless of how many shots it takes and possession hasn’t changed..., the assist is awarded.

          Not sure why they don’t do It this way. It takes way from the beautiful assists that led to a goal just because a defender gets an inadvertent block and the ball still ends up going i without changing possession. What’s the problem?? Just award assists this way.

        Right. American here, and hockey fan for 40 plus years. Assists are very different between the two sports. Much less forgiving in hockey around ricochets and rebounds. FPL approaches this, but otherwise, has some pretty strict thresholds for assists to be granted compared to hockey.

        Very different events.

        No assist is awarded if a goalscorer scores after his initial shot is blocked. I can't think of any examples of this not being the case.

        That wasn't an assist since there was no shot from Diouf. It's essentialy a shot from Shaqiri, off Lloris and then the goal.

          It's not really a shot by Shaqiri, it's a pass intended for Diouf who scores after the touch by Lloris.

          Did the touch from Lloris divert the ball from the intended target. No.

          The Eriksen goal would have had an assist had Ederson's touch not come from an attempted shot.

        The first attempt from Eriksen is clear. He scores with his second touch after a first initial shot. No assist.

          I'm not saying that Kane should have an assist but why does Shaqiri get one? Why are the FPL rules as they are? Why does a player who actually finds a teammate not get an assist while a player that misplaces a pass gets one?

          A) Player X passes to Player Y. Player Y shoots, attempt is saved and Player Y puts in the rebound. No assist for Player X.
          B) Player X attempts a pass to Player Y. Goalkeeper is first to it, tries to clear but only manages to hit Player Y, who happily accepts the gift and scores. Assist is given to Player X.

          IMO either you should give an assist in both the situations, or in neither. As it stands you're punishing players who actually find their teammates (Kane and Barnes today), while rewarding players who find their opponents (Shaqiri last week). It really doesn't make sense.
