Scout Notes – United Defeat Brings Complications

West Brom win at Old Trafford to hand Man City the league title as Double Gameweek 34 continues to surprise and delight precious few Fantasy managers.

Following modest returns from Saturday’s matches, Sunday was meant to be so much better but instead it handed us further disappointment and set up a variety of selection concerns for the run-in.

Man United’s 1-0 loss at home to the Baggies was the dampest of squibs for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers across the board.

Romelu Lukaku went into the match with 243,000+ new owners. Captained by 45 of the top 100 managers and 16.6% overall, a hefty 92,000+ made him the Double Gameweek’s most popular Triple Captain choice.

The Red Devils’ frontman squared up to the league’s bottom side having recorded a goal or an assist in seven of his last 10 Gameweek starts (five goals, three assists).

Just like armband rival Harry Kane less than 24 hours earlier, he blanked.

Albion keeper Ben Foster was required to make two saves – one a superb stop – to deny the Belgian, but both the forward and the team as a whole were so far removed from the heroics of last weekend at the Etihad Stadium.

Lukaku still has a second match to make amends – up against a Bournemouth defence with one clean sheet in 21 matches – but he’s managed just one goal in his last six away fixtures. While he remains a likely starter at the Vitality Stadium, coach Jose Mourinho is still set to rotate his squad in preparation for the weekend’s FA Cup semi-final with Spurs.

It’s far more doubtful whether Paul Pogba will retain his spot on the teamsheet, though, after an ineffectual display.

The driving force behind United’s second-half comeback at Man City, he was signed by 232,000+ for Double Gameweek 34 and captained by almost 86,000.

Yet despite Mourinho starting the match with the 4-3-3 formation that the Frenchman is said to thrive in, his 14.2% owners were rewarded with an abject performance as a booking and a 57-minute withdrawal produced zero points.

Pogba’s owners must now surely fear the worst when Mourinho unveils his Wednesday night teamsheet, with the manager far from complimentary on his display post-match:

“In the first-half I felt I had to bring one player with more dynamic and a player that runs more and has more touches of the ball. I had to make a decision one midfield player out to bring in Jesse Lingard and then after that I wanted more width, and Paul had a yellow card and before that he had a situation not for a second yellow but you never know in football, so I reacted to that. And Paul’s game was complicated like many others, always one more touch.”

At least the 175,000 who bought Chris Smalling got another 90 minutes out of the defender, but it’s now one clean sheet in seven Gameweeks for the United backline.

Mourinho preferred Victor Lindelof to Eric Bailly, who was rested from the squad altogether, as Smalling’s partner yesterday.

Prior to kick-off, he explained his decision to start with the summer signing:

“Normally, we are going to have more of the ball and, normally, it’s when we need somebody from the back to add extra technical quality in the middle of the back. We have three matches in a week. Bournemouth in a few days [Wednesday night] then Spurs after a few days again. In that semi-final, they are having one day extra to us to recover so I need also to think about that.”

Smalling now has 11 straight starts under his belt and seems to be rotation-proof, but with Phil Jones returning to the bench yesterday, even his pitch-time could be in doubt, leaving perhaps only David De Gea and Antonio Valencia as safe bets for midweek minutes.

Another who should feature at Bournemouth is Jesse Lingard, who was drafted in by 98,000+ for the West Brom match, only to be benched as Juan Mata returned to the starting XI on the right flank.

He did at least come on at half-time yesterday, although to little avail, while the brief renaissance of Alexis Sanchez, who had a goal and three assists from his previous two starts, ended abruptly against the Baggies.

Mourinho, as is his way, has made much of the fact that Spurs will have more time to prepare for Saturday’s semi-final, making changes yesterday and presumably plotting more of the same in midweek to combat the perceived injustice.

What effect that will have on the second act of our Double Gameweek 34 experience remains to be seen, but it will do well to be any worse than what has occurred so far.

Moore the merrier

West Brom’s caretaker manager Darren Moore has now won as many league matches (one) in two fixtures at the helm than his predecessor, Alan Pardew, achieved in 18 mostly miserable attempts.

And while the Baggies’ revival will spark little Fantasy interest –they have no Double Gameweeks to come and the remaining schedule (LIV new TOT cpl) is less than kind – it does have some knock-on effects.

Four points from Moore’s two matches suggest that the team have moved on from their whipping-boy status under Pardew, which could make Liverpool’s Gameweek 35 trip to The Hawthorns less of a Fantasy banker than it appeared a week or so ago.

Those hoping, with or without the Free Hit chip to employ, for a major points haul from Salah and two of his team-mates in next week’s reduced slate might have to rein in their expectations.

There’s even a case to be made for drafting in West Brom’s match-winner at Old Trafford, Jay Rodriguez, who’s now scored in three of the last four Gameweeks, although the Reds defence has kept clean sheets in three of their last five away days.

But the major fallout from yesterday’s shock win was Man City’s title victory.

It’s mission accomplished for Pep Guardiola’s 2017/18 vintage, with nothing left to play for but pride from here on in.

A coach who has never been afraid to chop and change now has carte blanche to rotate to his heart’s content.

Those of us on a Free Hit strategy for Gameweek 35 will still be bringing in three City players for Sunday’s title celebration match at home to Swansea City.

Which of those assets actually gets pitch-time is the key question now, with Raheem Sterling currently the top transfer pick for the weekend and Gabriel Jesus not so far behind in third place.

And then there’s the matter of the champions’ Double Gameweek 37.

What was once a fill-yer-boots exercise involving plum home fixtures against Huddersfield and Brighton could now be used an excuse for Guardiola to make sure everyone gets a go before they pack for the beach and/or the World Cup.

City were always going to win the league, but West Brom’s victory yesterday has ushered in the resultant complications a little bit sooner than we all would have liked.

Rubbish - What an awful gameweek so far - played Free Hit.

Original side: 59 plus Mahrez & Maguire to go again
FH Side: 29 with 11 left to play

Who wins?! I have a horrible feeling it will be my original side!

FH team for GW34 (looked good on paper!):
      De Gea
      Alonso - Maguire - Lowton
      Sanchez (C) - Alli - Mahrez - Lingard - Gross
      Kane - Vardy

So need De Gea, Alonso, Lowton, Sanchez (C), Alli, Lingard, Gross, Kane & Vardy to net at least 31 points :~

Diabolical Ru. I wildcarded later than most this this DGW in mind, I have 15 DGW players and I'm on 34 points - two less than average.

Still, it's only half time and I'm hoping that a couple of my rested players (Son, Lingard) will start next time around. An Alonso ban would be very helpful too 🙂

Mine went well. I did however go against every fibre of my being, and all advice on here, and get Lukaku in for a hit when I don't have a FH. Thats the only disappointment for me this week, I only did it as it was a from the heart move, I really wanted to just treat this game week with as a bit of fun, knowing full well that Lukaku would have to outscore Auba by 8 points to make it worth it.
67 -4 with Salah captain, oh thats right, I captained him.

Nice work, and really ballsy captaining Salah (when should that ever be considered a ballsy move? XD)

I'm hoping Red Rom will come through with a goal or two midweek - I'm rather concerned now though!

Underwhelming, so far. 43 points. Would have been a lot worse for my rank though if united had won with Lukaku contributing.

Still hopeful for the rest of the gameweek though, especially from my Leicester and Spurs assets who have their "easier" GW fixture still to come.

    Morning gents

2 FT next week. Very early plan:

    Lukaku + Mahrez -> Jesus + Sterling.

    Gives me:

    Hennessy
    Tark Lowton Robertson
    Salah Sterling Zaha Mili Gudmunsson
    Auba Jesus

    DDG Morgan Simpson Kane

Looks ok for a non-FH team with no hits ? Anything worth a hit ? Worried about Robertson gametime so maybe one of the Leicester defenders to City defender up to 6m ?

Highs: Cheaper striker performance from Murray and Vardy. Keeping Salah.

Lows: The defence, 0 points from Davies and Bailly not even in the squad. A waste of several millions of budget right there. Son and Mahrez dissappointing for the third match in a row (although Mahrez was unfortunate not to score). Kane the troll, again.

Additionally the Bench Boost has only contributed appearance points so far.

All very underwhelming, but 43 points is par for the top 10k average so keeps me in the hunt with 13 players to play, hopefully.....

Rough- just 8 points from my B.B. all sgw players so that’s that.

Smooth- 52 points so far with Salah, Mili, Gudmundsson the best performers.

Half time (8 players to go again) so no idea if it’s a rough or smooth GW. I think I’m happy enough so far, could be worse.

Smooth: bench boost already successful with a bench of Ryan + Long, Murray and Gudmundsson! Plus my decision to ignore United attack seems to be working well.

Rough: well mostly Kane captain but have high hopes for the second game.

Highs: Eriksen, Vardy, Gudmundsson & Robertson
Lows: Lukaku (c), Hennessy, De Gea & Smalling

Currently on 51 with 10 to play including (c).

Ruing United conceding the most of all....Smalling & De Gea were on 2 & 1 BPS respectively before conceding. An extra 11 points I could've really done with over my Rivals.

      All pretty smooth so far:

      * Bench Boost of Mili / Robertson / Zaha delivering 29 points.

      * Gudmunsson Assist

      * Kane and Lukaku blanking (so far). Whilst I own both and captain Kane, rivals have TC both

Rough. Kiko off at 57', three more minutes would've been 5 more points. Went for Alli last week over Eriksen. Needless to say I own Son too. Barnes assist denied as Schmeichel denied Woods first effort. BB activated, 6 points on the bench. Lukaku captain, double Utd defence. Absolutely nothing going my way this season.

There have been a number of higher scores reported here, including Going Home's 67 with 9 to play, Rupert The Horse's 67 (-4) with 11 to play, Santigold's 61 (-4) with 14 to play, and Wasp3000's 61 (no hit) with 14 to play.

So of teams with 14 to play, Wasp3000 appears to be the highest so far.

Rough - Lu(k)aku blank and likely Alonso ban
Smooth - 67 points with nine to play; 2 FTs rolled into 35 with no FH; 40 points from the 7 SGW players I kept against FFS group consensus; united not getting a pair of CSs as I am without any united defence; OR to 13k from 27k

Very much a smooth first 2/3 of the GW

      Hey Jonty.
      67 (-4)
      Smooth:
After using my free hit earlier in the season I found myself in a position whereby I needed a few gw 35 players.
So I got in Milivojevic and after Stephens got a red carded last week (last on bench) I could only really get one player due to the rest of my team, one mr Tomkins, who grabbed himself a goal. I kept hold of Firmino and captained Salah.
11 DGW players still to go.

      Rough:
I went against everything I know about fantasy football and got in Lukaku for a hit, I knew it was wrong as with no free hit he'd have to outscore Auba by 8 for it to pay off, but I wanted to have a bit of fun.

        Sama situation ( NO-FH )
WC32 got 9 DGW + ( Salah Karuis Robbo Mustafi Zaha Arnie )
        60 Pts + 10 Players to go ( Kaku C )
        8 Players to go for GW35 + 2 Fts
I think my 2 Fts give me more advantage than FH'ers to prepare DGW37

Yeah, thats a proper strategy, the extra transfer is huge for you. The only reason Im annoyed at the Lukaku move is because it would have been the perfect week, one which I haven't had this season. Compounded by the fact that Auba got an assist. so its a -7 plus the hit I'll take to get him back in so -11 at them mo.

Fantastic, horseman. You’ve 2x my tally so far. And, the auba to Lukaku for a hit was proper strategy, imo. 2 games to 1. My entire output was consistent with the unexpected result of your Lukaku buy. Nothing has really worked out thus far for Dgw players. Maybe round 2 will bear fruit.

I felt kane would have a good gw. I thought spurs would beat a reeling man city (how wrong I was!), kane would score a brace, and then score more vs Brighton, who are stumbling. It is a good think I don’t make investment decisions on my own! I do indeed need Kane to have a big game vs Brighton. Huge opportunity for me.

If we look at this weekend as one GW is it actually the lowest ever average score? I can’t recall a season where we have had such inconsistency. The teams who haven’t anticipated the DGW seem to be outperforming those that have at the moment.

Lows: Triple united with Smalling and DeGea and Lukaku (c) so that “last minute” goal was a killer. Didn’t have Alonso but Christensen who at least played but did nothing. Lots of near misses in Mahrez and Son. Willian got booked...when does that ever happen?

      Highs: Salah...that’s it.

This will be my first season in 7 years where I will not be in the top 20k and will be lucky to finish in the 100k making it my worst ever in 9 years.

Wow, you do have a very impressive FPL history, my fellow Antipodean. Well said, this season has been a very strange one in many ways....BGW31 of only 4 fixtures having an average of 46 pts for starters, of course Salah but yeh. Best wishes with the run-in, already looking forward to next season, this one has been a major write-off!

All rough, really. Planned for Dgw by wc gw33. Had a selling value of 105.1, and got 15 Dgw players with the ability to have kane, Lukaku and Vardy... Vardy is my top scorer with 6, then Willian and Alonso with 4 each, the former may get suspended, too. Currently on 35, and have seen my rank go from 5.9k to 8.3k.

      Smooth

Alonso and Stanislas out for Erik and Long for a hit. Bench boost of Ryan Ayew Fernandez and Long for 22 pts so far which is good. Happy I wasn't completly blinded by dgw fever and now have 2 Swansea players for their double gameweek in 37

60pts. Struggling to find motivation to play the game after a run of severely dull gameweeks but this has helped a little.

Smooth - 54(-4) with 14 to go including Kane (C). 18 points from my bench boost so far, more than I expected from two games. Hit was Mustafi to Long. Lukaku not scoring.

No roughs really, easy to feel bad about de Gea, Mahrez, Kane (C) blanks, but most managers in the same/worse situation.

GW 33: Old team with only 9 players would have outscored new WC team by 2 points including a planned hit.

Rough; Decided to FH, my non FH team would have 76 points so far. My actual FH team has 43.

      Smooth: Kevin Long.

It's not really a fair comparison because if I hadn't planned to use my FH in GW34 I would have built a team with more than 2 DGW'ers. Nonetheless it's frustrating, especially because I had those players for GW32 and GW33 when they didn't do as well. At least I'm well set up for GW35; Zaha, Salah, Sterling, Tomkins, Firmino, Auba, VVD. Then I also have 3 Free Transfers to use before DGW37, as opposed to 2 for those who FH in GW35. I'm trying to find positives...

Decided against doing Dummett for Long for -4 because I didn't want to be overthinking things and taking points away from myself.

Also, and this is my own fault, accidentally have captained Ashley Barnes instead of Kane after juggling players around so they're all colour aligned. Should have checked a million times.

      BB 34 50-4

      A bit mixed:

Highs: took a hit to sell Alonso and son for Kevin Long and Sanchez. Vardy goal and William assist.

Lows: United non cs while I had De Gea and smalling. And no return from captain Sanchez. Vardy goal which wiped out cs points on Lowton and long. Austin did not start.

No players rotated yet and doing really average. The roughest part is that a lot of managers who didn't really do much planning for the DGW are being rewarded by all sorts of SGW players going off. So instead of making up ground, I have barely moved up the ranks

Smooth - didn't bring any United in, 3 goalscorers in team.

Rough: Kane (TC) I fear the worst. Also chucked Mane and Auba for Salah and Kane, the former both getting points. Also got Gundogan first on my bench and Hegazi 3rd neither will feature. BB (19pts) over TC would have been OK even without a playing keeper.

Had considered van der Hoorn and Auba to Lukaku and Long but decided against it as no double for Burnley in 37 and already have Lowton. No CS for de Gea too and Mahrez blanked again and one point from Son and Azpi.

Rough: Pogba in for Mkhitaryan on a hit = 57 min and a yellow; Mahrez captain; ML rival captained Eriksen; red arrows in every league but one (FFS members, ironically).

Smooth: BB of Ryan, Mili, Monreal, and Kenedy netted me 14 points (with 1 game to go); kept Auba; 44 points with 11 games left.

Jonty, can I nominate my mini-league rival for having a 'rough' and 'smooth' within the same game-week?

You can call him 'Bob' if you need to anonymise on the Scoutcast.

      https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/team/225311/event/34

      Rough:
      - Has Lossl (7pts) and Schindler (8pts) sitting on his bench, with Cresswell and Shaqiri too with no bench boost.

      - Doesn't have Free Hit and has only 7 players for GW35 (don't think he's realised missing fixtures in BGW35).

      Smooth:
      - Has SGW players Zaha (14), Salah (8) and Robertson (6) in his first 11

      - Avoiding getting punished with no Lukaku, Kane, Spurs mid or Sanchez

      - Has front line of Wood (9 pts), Murray (7pts) and Vardy (6pts)

      - Currently destroying my carefully planned DGW34 team 61 - 45!

Rough: Sold Zanka to Lowton for a hit and have Foster and Mili on the bench for what could've been a 29 points BB + Bauer

Smooth: Didn't buy Lukaku and didn't TC Kane as most did but chose to TC Hazard instead

A smooth 62 so far with up to 6 players left to play.

I said it last week and will say it again - not having FH left has worked our well so far.

It has meant buying players like Zaha and Tomkins rather than say Willian and Alonso.

Already have up to 10 for GW35 with 1 FT to get up to 11 potentially.

Don't think this counts but I will put it out there anyway

Sold Hegazi for a hit and benched Zanka

If I hadn't made a transfer I would be 19 point better off

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but I would do the same again

Rough: The casuals and those not planning for the DGW seem to be winning this week. A loss for the community really.

Smooth: I have 15 players with another game to play this week. Fingers crossed.

27 in total from De Gea, Ryan, Davies, Christensen, Chilwell, Lowton, Tarkowski, Alli, Mahrez, Willian (with his 4 points being my top score), Lingard, Lukaku (c), Kane and Barnes.

All 15 have a game left, so I might very well end up with more than 50 points this gameweek.

      Very rough story,
Young person in ML tried to do Kane & Pogba > Eriksen & Hazard just before deadline but chickened out????
      Very smooth story

Smooth - Vardy (C), Triple Liverpool, Zaha, Aube SGW points and haven’t been punished (yet) by having no Kane or Lukaku.

Rough: Son and Lingard benched. 2 goals conceded by Simpson, Azpi and Alonso. No clean sheets. Alonso facing a potential ban for idiocy.

Smooth: Captaining Vardy over Mahrez with goals from him, Wood and Eriksen, and an assist from Alonso. Somehow made it to 51pts after Monday's game with effectively 15 still to play (14 if Alonso gets the ban).

          Also, although it's not allowed, here's a "something I didn't do":

I spent the whole week deliberating which cheap defender to buy. In the end, I sold Kiko (2pts) for Masuaku (2pts) instead of Long (10pts and counting), who I avoided simply because he might not play in GW37 (even though I could put him on the bench that week anyway!).

Smooth: taking a -8 to bring in Wood and Long to make full use of the bench boost

        Rough:
Captaining Lukaku with a supporting cast of Kane, Son, Alonso, Alli, Gross, Mahrez, double Lei defence, DDG, and Willian

        Stupid/Rough
        Forgetting to press bench boost

        Result
26 points minus 8 for the hits

        Gone from 43k to 83k

      I've went from ranked 1300 to around 4000 in probably the worst GW of my whole time playing this game;

Top of my ML by 30 pts, I took a 16point hit (with GW37 in mind)

I subbed out Zaha for Erikksen, Lossl for De Gea, Ward Prose for Mane and a few others aswell as leaving Milojevic on the bench.

That alone caused a 30pt loss and with the 16pt hit I am now 15 points behind, in 2nd place.

Got 10 players still to play but what a rookie mistake...

      kill me now!

Hi team, been a while since I posted here, but I could use your expert opinion!

I recently thought that Bravo may get some game time to make him eligible for a league winners medal (https://twitter.com/FFplayermanager/status/985808464336293888) but it's since been quite rightly pointed out that Begovic got one last year despite only playing twice for Chelsea.

Does anyone have a comprehensive understanding of the medal system, and how it may influence game time for the remaining games?

      Morning all. 🙂

Tinkering to take my mind off a horrible GW. How does this GW 36 WC look like?

      Ederson - Lloris
Mustafi - Smalling - Morgan - Fernandez - Van der Hoorn
      Hazard - Eriksen - Sterling - Sane - Arnautovic
      Kane - Austin - Ayew

Leaves me 0m itb. Hope I can afford it as only Sterling and Kane look like rising from that lot and i have Kane and will buy Sterling this week.

Will change Hazard and Austin ➡ Vardy and Willian if there are form and fitness isssues with them.

      Thoughts?

Sane and Sterling seems ambitious now that City have won the league. Then again no champions league, so who knows.

Mahrez is doing nothing atm. Salah has CL. 36 between 2 legs of CL. Will get rested and 37 vs Chelsea. I'll take a chance with that.

Wasn't this always gonna be the case. Even if United won both games this gameweek City still only had to beat Swansea to secure the league so imo GW37 was always gonna present us with this situation

That is the most sideways move I've ever seen suggested. Surely you have better things to do with transfers. Gross has always fixtures for the run in. Murray to Ayew imo, no point dropping Gudmundsson for a player who doesn't have a game in 35

      Hows this FH:

      Pickford
      Robertson--Lowton--Pva
      Salah--Sterling--Sane--Zaha
      Auba--Firmino--Jesus

      3.9---Arnie--Kiko--Tark

      FH Draft 1:

      Pickford
      Tarkowski PvA Robertson
      KdB Salah Sterling Sane Zaha
      Auba Firmino

How's it looking? Too top heavy?

Dubravka away to Everton over Pickford at home to Newcastle?

Nope, but I'd get Vardy for the run-in, too.

Picking a good defence looks like the biggest challenge for FH35......what will be your back 7?

Agreed, Im thinking of a power front 7 of Auba, Firm, Jesus, Sterling, Sane, Salah, Mane, and some cheapies along with Mustafi at the back

I you used your free hit this week, how much do you think its affected you? Has it been a positive or negative experience?
Also, those with 15 dew players, do you feel you were a little blindsided and ignored the SGW form players like Miliv and Salah?

Yes to he last question. Lesson is that form may be more important than an extra game. Salah I sold on wc gw3e, which I think was correct, yet wc in GroB, Morgan was just dumb.

Well Morgan could pay off, I certainly got him in for the Southampton game.

True. I guess it’s all only half over, and maybe the opposite will happen in the 2nd half. I’m a tad demoralized as I thought I had a competitive advantage with wc patience, very high net worth, and blah blah. Give me some of your horse feed (or maybe a scotch, at 6am nyc time!).

Yeah, its a real shame. All that planning and solid strategic work, and then there'll be many out there who got caught out by the DGW and nailed it.

Riiiiiight. Such is fantasy sports. Especially this one where goals are scarce and more randomly distributed. In hoops, baseball, and to a lesser extent, hockey and NFL, such planning more often bears returns...this football, with few fantasy points, is more subject to such ironic outcomes.

      Thoughts on this top-heavy FH-team?

      Pickford
      Mustafi - Yedlin - Long
      Sterling - Sane - Salah - Mane
      Jesus - Firmino - Auba

Question about Free Hit Chip ...

Can I make a regular transfer to my squad now in preparation for GW36. Afterwards activate my free hit chip, make my FH changes for a GW35 team.

Will the original transfer remain in my GW36 Team or are they lost in my GW35 Free Hit team?

      Hope that makes sense.

No - team reverts back to exactly as it was at 11:31 just after GW34 deadline (i.e. no changes will be reflected)

What a topsy tipsy turvy few weeks it’s been in playing this game.

Obviously there’s winners and losers. But have we learned any lessons?

Not to be so influenced by the chips is mine. Keep your core team.

      Jesus - Firmino - Auba
