Scout Notes – Frustration For Arnautovic

Target men emerge from the bench to share the spoils at the London Stadium as Peter Crouch and Andy Carroll put the much-fancied Marko Arnautovic in the shade.

Arnautovic boasted nine goals and five assists from his last 14 Gameweek starts before Monday’s game and had been involved in 54% of West Ham’s goals over the season.

True to form, Arnautovic was a threat throughout the clash with Stoke and was only denied a goal when adjudged marginally offside after guiding home an Aaron Creswell centre.

The Austrian had fired another two shots from inside the box before that incident but could not break the resolve of his former club. Instead it took the introduction of Carroll to rescue a point for West Ham.

The blank will come as a major blow to the 5.7% who took Arnautovic into the match as a single Gameweek asset, particularly in light of his schedule of fixtures to come.

West Ham have a Double Gameweek 37 – with match-ups at Leicester City and a home encounter with Manchester United. But, before that, they go to Arsenal and host Manchester City in matches that seem unlikely to give up too many opportunities for goals and points.

Nonetheless, given that Arnautovic offers a Gameweek 35 fixture away to the Gunners, he will likely be held and may continue to attract extra investment. He has already gained just over 8,500 owners since Saturday’s deadline.

Arsenal have kept two clean sheets over their last three on home turf, though incredibly those are their only shut-outs in 15 Gameweek outings.

In addition, Arsene Wenger’s side remain distracted by their Europa League campaign and again look set to rest players in Sunday’s fixture given that the semi-final first leg tie with Atletico Madrid arrives four days later.

The bigger issue for Arnautovic could be the availability of both Carroll and Chicharito, who were introduced on Monday as David Moyes chased the game.

Should they be considered for starts, Arnautovic could move back alongside the fit-again Manuel Lanzini in support behind a lone striker.

Hart at fault once more

Elsewhere, Joe Hart’s slip for Stoke’s goal could put an end to his four-match run of starts – it was the keeper’s second error leading to a goal over four appearances since replacing Adrian in Gameweek 30.

At just 4.2, Hart could yet provide the cheapest active goalkeeper option for Double Gameweek 37 but his security of starts and points potential are certainly both in question.

Meanwhile, Aaron Cresswell continues to catch the eye on the left side of the Hammers’ back three, having produced four shots on goal and eight crosses – a match-high in both cases. One of those deliveries supplied Carroll’s goal to give Cresswell a seventh assist of the season – a tally matched only by Ben Davies among FPL defenders.

More save points for Butland

At the opposite end of the pitch, Stoke City’s Jack Butland is now a short-term target ahead of Gameweek 35.

He and the Potters line-up were auditioning for spots in Free Hit squads ahead of a crucial home meeting with in-form Burnley.

Carroll’s late effort denied Butland a clean sheet, leaving him with just one in the last nine Gameweeks. However, over that spell, Butland has made 50 saves – including five on Monday – gathering 13 extra points, that’s more than any other goalkeeper in both cases.

In attacking areas, Stoke’s options surely remain limited to Xherdan Shaqiri, who appears the most likely to generate points from his No 10 role.

An assist for the Crouch goal was the playmaker’s eighth of the campaign and Shaqiri also claimed two bonus points, his first since Gameweek 28.

Indeed, the Swiss midfielder is now without a goal in six starts having struck three in three Gameweeks prior to that drought.

Exactly Sting in the Tail. Willian would have got 15+ without Hart's heroics. No way were Stoke gonna score until hairgel man decided to spill the ball instead of just diving on it. Beggars belief.

29 point bench boost. He also transferred in Zaha this week for his first brace in the PL.

The way brighton were defending at the weekend don't be surprised if theres some goals. The key is whether Kane can grab one in the first 30mins. If so its a long night for non captainers as his records suggest when he does that he goes on to get 2 or 3 goals.

You'd think the officials wear those earpieces for a reason. Can't they communicate into those while the game is still going? Considering how demoralizing conceding on the brink of half time is for any team, this will destroy football if this is how they intend to use VAR.

so it has teething problems and your first response , like alan shearer and co , is its a shambles and should never be used again? at the end of the day it is making the right decisions, all that other stuff can be fixed over time

look at the mistakes made at the weekend... one of them could relegate Southampton..VAR would stop all of this

I for one am delighted the PL has voted against VAR for next season. I just want the game to flow, not some cretins 100 miles away taking 5 minutes to make one decision which is subjective and killing the game. Think a lot of us will be glad to see flowing football after the VAR farce in the world cup. It will also encourage cheating from people in the box. The Italian theatrically fell over when his foot was slightly trodden on against England recently and the ball had gone. Expect more controversy in the World Cup.

it works well in rugby so there is no reason it shouldnt work in football as long as they can get it to run smoothly, like they do in the six nations. Literally takes 2 minutes to make the correct decision based on what happened. Play it on the big screen so every one can see it, let the officials make their decision and play on. It would do away with the ridiculous pantomime acting from some players who should be sent off for making a meal out of challenges that didnt even touch them.

        a fact that speaks volumes.....

since Payet left the Hammers over 15 months ago he is still their second most creative player in terms of chances made (behind Lanzini).

Explain how this makes sense? Do you mean in the last two years? Since he left he has created precisely zero chances for West Ham.

Yeah its since the start of the 16/17 season. So he created more in those 6 months than anyone else at west ham has managed in 2 whole seasons, apart from Lanzini, despite those other west ham players having an additional 15 months in which to create chances...

I want to try and keep this a serious question and not descend into tit for tat on Chip strategy.

Probability states that all things being equal, a DGW player scores more than a SGW player, and so it is understandable that we try to buy more tickets to the lottery. Will we ever be disciplined enough to not overlook the good form and fixtures of SGW players? Let's face it, if transfers had no cost, wouldn't we all have a squad of 15 DGW'ers to BB with? Which leads me onto my second point.

By marking a GW as optimum for BB (say 34) or the FHC (say 35), at what cost does this come? Earlier in the season when there are no DGW's, some people play this game extremely well - picking players for 6 week runs, adjusting to form and fixture. Then, when a blank or DGW arrives they narrow the scope of the players they can transfer in, which can (and has) drastically hit their rank. A few examples would be:

          Mahrez scoring 10 and 11 pts in GW29 and 30 proceeding BGW31.
          Alli scoring 11 and 15 in GW30 and 32.
          Aubameyang scoring 9 and 9 in GW29 and 30.

I really think we need to learn that DGW's are not the be-all-and-end-all, particularly when it colours our strategy for several gameweeks before and after. It will vary from season to season, but the fixtures are still very much key.

I don't think there's a set rule that we should always or never ignore SGW players. It depends on the SGW, DGW and blanking players available at the time.

In the case of this season, I think we erred by over-prioritising GW31 and ignoring Mahrez/Aubameyang at that time, however I think we were correct in going for only DGW players on the GW32/33 WC, as there were more than enough good players available and the template team has been pretty unlucky with Kane unexpectedly returning hurting Son, Mahrez now looking like he was on the beach and Chelsea/United just collapsing, all of which was relatively unforseen 1-2 weeks ago.

Feel like the mid will be something like these:

            Salah,KDB,Sterling,Zaha,Arnautovic

            Salah,Sane,Sterling,Mane,Zaha/Milli

            Salah,Sterling,Gundogan,Sane,Arnautovic.

One of those combos will be impressive and could rack up the points. 5 in mid is the way to go I think with auba, jesus(if fit) up top and first sub as wood/tosun/perez

          1. What does the template BGW35 FH team look like?
          2. Which BGW35 template busters could potenially rocket owners up the ranks?
          3. Which teams should we avoid due to the risk of being on the beach?
          4. Is the Anfield express a fpl dream come true or does it diminish the fun of a surprise lineup rotation?
          5. Now that they have won the league which man city players are safer from rotation for their dream home run?
          6. Time to say goodbye to Chelsea or can Giroud add a much needed outlet to their creativity?

          1) With so few clean sheets at the moment, would the best defensive stratergy for the Free Hit this week be to go for the dirt cheap Crystal Palace keeper combo (£8.3m for the pair) and then go for defenders who offer attacking threat such as Van Dijk, Baines, Chambers, Van Aanholt, etc?

          2) Will we change our approach to the blanks and doubles next season?

Many managers missed out on Mahrez’s 2 double digit hauls prior to GW31 as they loaded up on the likes of Theo Walcott and Choupo Moting.

Many this week offloaded the likes of Milivojevic, Mane, Salah and Firmino who all returned points to make room for DGW players such as Lingard, Pogba, Sanchez and Lukaku who all blanked and may not play the second game.

With so many good-value, money-saving options, we could easily build a FH-team that avoids big-money rotation-risks with 24m+ to spare in the bank. For example:

          Ederson (Foster)
          Coleman Baines Long (Lowton Masuaku)
          Zaha Mili Townsend Shelvey (McClean)
          Wood JRod Perez

          1) Which top-team extravagances should we target?

Since there is so much money to spare, should we throw 'value' out of the window and choose our big-hitters based on potential for (absolute) points?

          2) How would you decide which budget options make your final teams?

Would you target specific PL teams based on attacking an defensive potential or would you choose individual players? Would you avoid players who play each other or 'spread the risk'?

          How to approach the free-hit?
          A) going templatish with mainly Liverpool and city assets
          B) mixing a few punts like bolasie, tosun, iwobi, wood, solanke or ings, townsend, ayoze Perez ;etc in there
          C) Just having Salah and a city mid and going full-on differential in other attacking positions

Agree - to add to this:
            1) Which City players might benefit from Pep's plans to give more playing time to fringe members of his squad - Laporte, Mendy viable options?
            2) Time to sell Marcos Alonso and go cheap at the back to afford a big hitting front 7 for DGW37? Where do you see value among cheaper defenders?

          Hi Jonty...
          i) How will Manchester City approach the game against Swansea with them being confirmed as Champions...should we triple up on City assets? whom should we triple-on ? should we go for a defender as well?

            i) I would expect (hope) that they will field their strongest possible team for the trophy presentation celebrations in GW35, then rotate in GW36 and 37.

The new Fantasy Allsvenskan game (based on FPL just like the Eliteserien game) has a Sky-style tiered bonus system for attacking and defensive contributions (crosses, key passes, tackles, chances created, mistakes leading to goals etc.)

All updated in-game with no extra bonus awarded after the final whitle.

Would this be a fairer and more objective system than FPL's current 3-2-1 bonus?

A few people have been wondering why I haven't submitted any questions this week or the week before last.

I'll be knocking the scoutcast questions on the head, sorry guys.

Questions don't appear to be chosen on merit and unfortunately there appears to be a personal agenda ... at least where I'm concerned.

No hard feelings from me. If you go to all this time and effort to build up a brilliant website like this, you get to run it however you want. I'll still be tuning in every week as a big fan of the show. I've always said - and still continue to say - that the scoutcast is the best thing on telly! 😀

Is this the toughest end of the season to predict? I can’t think of any teams with much to play for; Man City title, top 4 decided, relegation pretty much decided. What sides are you looking at from now until the end of the season?

The top 4 isn't quite decided yet - if Chelsea win their game in hand and also beat Liverpool then the gap between them would only be 4 points, though with a far better goal difference for Liverpool.
So Liverpool might need to win at least two of their remaining four games, and can't pack their bags for the beach just yet.

Spurs and Liverpool will also be trying to help Kane and Salah respectively to win the golden boot, although the Champions League must be Liverpool's highest priority, and Spurs will also be hoping to win the FA Cup.

Pep may rotate and give more playing time to some of his fringe players, but he will also be hoping to set a number of unbeatable new records.

Man United's and Jose's pride would be hurt if they don't finish second.

And there are still at least 8 teams that are not yet mathematically certain of avoiding relegation - although it would require a most unlikely improvement on their part for Stoke or Southampton to survive.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 35

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will be selected at random at 8:30am Wednesday and then asked to submit their XI by 10am by Friday by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual in the Scout Picks article.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.
