Scout Notes – Lukaku Has His Say

Romelu Lukaku calms the anxiety of almost a million Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers by springing from the Manchester United bench to play his part in Double Gameweek 34.

Over 934,000 handed Lukaku the captaincy for Wednesday night’s encounter, along with Sunday’s ill-fated clash with West Bromwich Albion.

Of the 26,000+ Triple Captains chips in play, 35.4% of them were also trusted on Lukaku.

That shock defeat left the striker with just two points heading into the Vitality Stadium contest, with Jose Mourinho’s teamsheet causing panic when it was revealed that the Belgian would be benched for the first time in his United career.

But a 30-minute appearance was enough for Lukaku to contribute, firing home smartly from a Paul Pogba through-ball as United countered swiftly and decisively in the second period.

It meant that Lukaku ended the Gameweek on a modest eight points, level with Mohamed Salah and trailing Harry Kane (ten). After the news that arrived at 6.45, his owners will be thankful for those returns.

Sanchez No Show

Alexis Sanchez also suffered from the cull, as Mourinho made seven changes in all, either out of punishment for Sunday’s defeat to the Baggies or, more likely, with Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final with Spurs in mind.

The Chilean failed to see action, ending the Gameweek on just two points having been signed by 78,000 for his two fixtures.

With United’s two principal attackers frustrating their managers, it was left to the most signed defender of Gameweek 34 to deliver big.

Smalling on target again

Snapped up by 175,000+ for the double-header, Chris Smalling crowned his twelfth successive start with another goal, his third in six Gameweek appearances.

All three of those recent strikes have arrived away from Old Trafford and, while many of Smalling’s 325,000 managers back in Gameweek 33 may have missed his goal at rivals Man City, his boosted ownership of 523,000+ will surely have benefited from Wednesday’s tap in.

It took Smalling to four goals for the season, trailing only Marcos Alonso (six) among FPL defenders.

More significantly, it meant that, combined with United’s 17th clean sheet of the campaign, Smalling picked up his first maximum bonus to amass 14 points. That took him to 16 for the Gameweek to make him the leading individual points scorer among those with two fixtures.

Smalling owed his opener to the pass and movement of Jesse Lingard, who claimed his second assist in four Gameweeks and sixth of the season. Starting on the right of a lively front three, Lingard was picked up by 98,000 ahead of United’s double-header but was owned by a modest 668,000+ (10.9%) ahead of Gameweek 34.

It was the playmaker who made way for Lukaku on the hour-mark, indicating that he will be a starter in Saturday’s cup-tie.

Jose shuffles the pack

Mourinho made seven changes in all, as Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Antonio Valencia, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata joined Lukaku and Sanchez in making way.

That meant starts for Lingard, Phil Jones, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Luke Shaw, Marouane Fellaini and the lesser-spotted Matteo Darmian.

As a result, Eric Bailly – owned by 5.9% of managers – failed to start in either of the Gameweek fixtures and has figured in just two of the last five outings.

The Ivorian is understandably suffering sales, though that also applies to United’s leading assets ahead of their blank in Gameweek 35.

United exodus underway

Even Lukaku, with five goals and two assists in his last seven Gameweek appearances, is currently the most sold player, with Pogba and Lingard also shedding ownership at pace.

United have two fixtures to come in Gameweek 37, though they are away at Brighton and West Ham United. Much will also depend on their fate on Saturday, with progress to the FA Cup final no doubt heightening the risk of rotation over those fixtures.

Both Spurs (wba NEW) and, in particular, Manchester City (HUD BHA), have a stronger double-header, so FPL managers appear to be clearing the decks to make way for their assets. Again with Spurs, any progress to the FA Cup showpiece could hinder our recruitment, particularly with such as Son Heung-min.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just a Lack(azette) of forward options.

I feel like there are loads of good options in all positions. And if you don't want 3 forwards, you can play just 2 or 1.

          • 10 Years

The most options now seem to be in the mids. What forwards do you really want?

          1. Deulofail
            • 8 Years
            6 years, 8 days ago

Nailed forwards like Tosun, Wood, Perez, and if Liverpool' leaked team look dodgy, JRod or Rondon.

Lacazette is a big risk as far as minutes are concerned.

Or as you've said below, just play 5 in midfield. There are about 20 midfielders I want this week. 4 at the back is an option instead/as well.

I prefer Zaha and Arnautovic to all the mid-price forwards. So it really just leaves two of Jesus, Firmino and Lacazette.

Lacazette really hasn't been explosive and will probably be subbed early to preserve him for Europa. Firmino could be rested. So it really just leaves Jesus as the only certainty.

              1. Deulofail
                • 8 Years
                6 years, 8 days ago

Right, but if Firmino is in the leaked teamsheet, he's a far superior option to Lacazette, who is a doubt to start.

If Firmino is out, you could play:

                A) 352 with Lacazette
                B) 352 with Wood/Tosun/etc and use the money to upgrade elsewhere
                C) 451 with perhaps a little too much money to spare?

Of those options I would lean away from A. I guess it comes down to how much you value Lacazette. At the moment, I think he too much money (he already was when he was nailed). You could even get Welbeck to lessen the cost, but then you may as well get Wood for more minutes and more money to spend elsewhere.

                1. JasonG123
                  • 10 Years
                  6 years, 8 days ago

Of course Firmino is the best option if confirmed to start. However, if he's confirmed rested then for the structure of my team the price of Wood vs Lazazette doesn't matter since if I get Wood I'll literally have 4m in the bank, unused. Given that, surely you would prefer Lacazette to Wood or Tosun?

                  1. Deulofail
                    • 8 Years
                    6 years, 8 days ago

I would restructure my team. Are you not on a FH?

In fact, I'm not making a team until the leaked news. If nothing leaks, then I'll probably go without Firmino and get someone like Wood.

                    1. JasonG123
                      • 10 Years
                      6 years, 8 days ago

Yes I'm on a FH. My point is that there is actually nowhere to distribute the funds if Firmino is out. If I go with the following team:

                      Butland
                      Coleman Baines Robertson
                      Salah Mane KDB Sterling Zaha
                      Jesus Wood

This is about as expensive a team as I could possibly want (without Laca) and I still have 3.1m ITB. So I may as well just get Lacazette instead of Wood and then just downgrade Coleman to a Mustafi/PvA type.

                      1. JasonG123
                        • 10 Years
                        6 years, 8 days ago

I'm also not making a team properly until the leak comes out, but it's good to consider options before then to prepare for every eventuality.

  7. JasonG123
    • 10 Years

With Aubameyang seemingly no longer an option, there seems to be a real dearth of striker options. It's pretty much just Jesus, Firmino (rotation risk) and Lacazette (not explosive) as the premium options with Tosun and Wood as the mid pricers.

Personally, I prefer Zaha and Arnautovic to the forward mid pricers so it looks like 3-5-2 is now the best strategy with Jesus and then Firmino if he starts or Lacazette if Firmino doesn't start.

I was leading my main rival by 30 pts but now he gained 40 pts on me playing smalling, gross, etc. My or dropped from 30 k to 57 k already and will drop further now. I thought of putting long but went for Lowton. I thought of putting Kane and Pogba but went for Sanchez and Alli. Thought f captaining Lukaku but chose Sanchez. Worst gw ever! I don't own him but wouldn't put +7m on the bench for 2 GWs

It's only 1 GW if you're playing FH in GW35.

He'll be in my team after this GW. But that is only because he automatically comes back in after the FH.

And if you just bench him he’s then available for DGW37 rested so should play both....

Not sure myself but I’ll never be in a rush to remove players with an upcoming double if I can find another way.

    If we don’t get a leaked line-up ...

Just have Salah from Liverpool and captain him as cover?

There has been references to leaked info on the Liverpool team line up in advance of the official release. What is the site for this please.

If I put together a team using my free hit chip with Liverpool players in it and find they aren't playing am I able to make last minute changes to my team or am I stuck with it.

    Auba - might be rested
    Firmino - might be rested
    Aguero - out
    Lukaku - ManU not playing
    Kane - Spurs not playing

Jesus seems to be the only nailed on striker of choice for FH'ers

So what to do with the other 2 spots?

I'm tempted with an Auba and Lacazette double up and make sure I have 2 nailed subs 3rd one will be cheapest player I can find, nailed or not)

We will find out on Firmino hopefully before deadline...

      If not I like a 352 with

      Jesus Lacazatte
