Scout Notes – Lacazette Leaves It Late

A late Arsenal goal rush saves the day for Free Hit managers, while a Burnley forward delivers the goods to keep those without the chip in credit as well.

Eighty minutes into the Gunners’ home match with West Ham and many of the 154,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers who had employed their Free Hit chip were in a dark place.

As revealed by Ragabolly’s latest Metrics article, 63.9% of the top 10,000 managers playing the chip had elected to recruit Alexandre Lacazette.

The striker had been signed by 42,000, and captained by more than 100,000, with many taking advantage of the Free Hit to bring him in after coach Arsene Wenger revealed, during a press conference on Thursday, that he wanted to give run-outs to most of the side likely to play in next week’s Europa League semi-final tie against Atletico Madrid.

That was a bitter blow to those looking to cash in on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Ineligible in Europe, he’d seemed a shoo-in for domestic action, prompting major investment ahead of Gameweek 35.

He was the third most signed player ahead of Saturday’s deadline, with 201,000 making their move. Meanwhile, 221,000 captained the 14.8%-owned forward – Arsenal’s most popular player in FPL.

Wenger’s statements on Thursday changed everything, leaving those without the Free Hit chip somewhat in the lurch.

Sure enough, Lacazette started and Aubameyang was on the bench, although at 1-1 with 10 minutes to go, neither had anything to show for their troubles.

By then, the Gabon international was on the pitch as the Gunners sought to reclaim a lead given them by Nacho Monreal, only for Marko Arnautovic to equalise for the visitors.

A goal blitz then followed, with Aaron Ramsey and Lacazette, twice, putting a decidedly flattering spin on a match in which the Hammers had been competitive until their late capitulation.

Aubameyang did at least produce an assist for his owners, with Ramsey and Granit Xhaka also setting up goals in the 4-1 win.

Maximum bonus went to Lacazette as he recorded only his second double-digit return of the campaign, his 13-point total matching his previous season’s best, in Gameweek 6.

Those points, relative to Aubameyang’s tally of four, are likely to have a major impact on FPL ranks once Gameweek 35 is done.

And Lacazette’s form – four goals in as many Gameweeks, with only two of those starts – suggests he’ll continue in the main striker role despite Aubameyang’s equally strong recent showings. He’d scored four goals in his last three home matches, and six in eight Gameweeek appearances overall.

That state of affairs, and Arsenal’s next fixture away at Man United, is persuading many of those non-Free Hitters to offload Aubameyang – he’s the second most sold player ahead of Gameweek 36, as managers look to Harry Kane and Gabriel Jesus for the run-in.

Ups and downs for others

Ramsey was another vital Gameweek 35 figure.

Signed by 27,000, he was a key differential for Free Hit investors after returning to the starting XI and producing a goal and an assist, along with two bonus points, against the Hammers.

The Welsh international had four shots, three chances created and a match-high nine touches in the box in a strong attacking display.

His 12-point return was a huge boost to his 4.0% ownership, particularly when stacked against the fortunes of those who decided to use their Free Hit chip to bring in Mesut Ozil instead.

The 2.7%-owned German missed the match due to illness – as did keeper Petr Cech – and his 9.3 price tag (compared to Ramsey’s 6.8) was a high one to pay for a no-show.

Arsenal’s defenders, meanwhile, had attracted 149,000 transfers-in for the West Ham clash, with hopes high of a third consecutive home clean sheet.

But those shut-outs were their only ones in 16 Gameweeks, and it was left to goalscorer Monreal to provide a decent return among the backline.

Owned by 493,000 and signed by 68,000, the Spaniard was the most popular of those Gameweek 35 defensive acquisitions and his fifth goal of the season means he’s now just one shy of Marcos Alonso – amazing work for a man with just one strike in his five previous Premier League seasons.

Marko the man

Predictably enough, Arnautovic was West Ham’s only bright spark.

He had four shots, all in the box, and his goal from substitute Manuel Lanzini’s assist was his 10th in his last 16 Gameweek appearances.

The midfielder also has five assists from that spell and was signed by 49,000+ going into the Arsenal match as his ownership, now at 6.1%, continues to increase.

That should mean he remains the Hammers’ one tempting asset ahead of Double Gameweek 37’s trip to Leicester City and a visit from Man United.

Before that, there’s the small matter of a home match against Man City, with David Moyes’ side still requiring points to finally put their relegation fears to bed.

Arnautovic’s owners can only hope that his form will trump what are a tricky set of fixtures.

Deadlock at Stoke

Burnley assets went into their match at Stoke City well supported, particularly by managers without the Free Hit active.

And it was striker Ashley Barnes who delivered, bundling home his sixth goal in eight Gameweek starts to earn the Clarets a point and deny their hosts a precious win.

Owned by 288,080, Barnes had proved a popular target for Double Gameweek 34, although he was jettisoned or benched by many Free Hit managers ahead of Saturday’s deadline.

The forward promptly punished that decision, but there were slim pickings on offer among other Burnley assets.

Kevin Long, with 45,000+ new investors, was their most signed player ahead of Gameweek 35, only for the Clarets defence to concede yet again.

They’ve kept just one clean sheet in 15 league matches in 2018 – only Brighton have a worse record in the Premier League since the turn of the year – with an assist for centre-half James Tarkowski at least providing some joy for his 5.0% ownership.

For Stoke, Xherdan Shaqiri was their most popular target in action.

He was brought in by 51,000+, with goalkeeper Jack Butland (7,700) ranking next.

The midfielder managed one shot and created three chances, but he failed to find the net for the seventh successive match, having delivered three in three prior to that.

Butland at least brought in a couple of save points in a performance that also earned him one bonus point, with the main hauls coming from goalscorer Badou Ndiaye and Mame Diouf, who provided the assist.

In truth, players from neither side are of much interest to Fantasy managers now, with their assets likely to provide bench back-up at best, or more likely replaced by Double Gameweekers for the run-in.

What's everyone's transfer plans between now and DGW37?

Thinking of doing Salah to Eriksen/Sterling if leaks show he's not starting v Stoke.

Then doing Lukaku to Jesus and either upgrade Lowton or take out the worst looking of Willian/Mahrez/Son for a hit for the DGW.

I think Lukaku to Kane, Mahrez to Sterling, and downgrade Alonso to fund the moves. Might change my mind of course.

Mahrez is a real dilemma for me. Great DGW fixtures and was in great form not too long ago. Will be hard dropping him but might be the right choice.

It might very well end up being Willian to Sterling if I can afford it, we'll see. I have Vardy anyway and I don't think Leicester will score enough to warrant having both.

Oh yeah if you have Vardy it's definitely not as risky. Willian's another form vs fixtures dilemma

Might let it roll this week just to avoid a hit for 37.

Wouldn't mind a City mid. Could get rid of Hazard or Son although the latter would only allow Silva this week.

Want Jesus but don't think I'll sell Kane or Vardy so would have to find just over 4m.

Hazards loomed alright from the highlights although it was against Southampton even if Chelseas not in form.

Wish Lamela wasnt around to make Son an uncertainty. Would make things so much simpler

      36: Lukaku & Bailly to Cedric & Kane (-4)

      37: Mahrez & Murray to 4.7 (TBC) & Jesus (-4)

Feel like I need to get Sterling in but not sure how I do it.

So in the end, despite GW34 being a low-scoring DGW my bench boost and free hit this week have still delivered - a jump in rank from about 100k to 44k in two weeks. Still with TC to go in GW37 so I'm looking forward to a positive end to the season.

I'd try to get Sterling and Kane in as part of a -8 if needs be.

Ideally one which gives you a float which can be used to buy Jesus for 37.

Sounds sensible. If Salah is rested then I could so Salah & Lukaku -> Sterling & Kane (-4). Only leaves 0.3 so would have to be something like Mahrez/Vardy -> Arnie/Jesus(-4) in 37 if needs be.

Wow looks like you have a nightmare on your hands trying to get in your rivals differentials.

Probably the most important question is how confident are you that Kane won't find form and score a hat trick v WAT this week (same fixture that Salah scored 29)

If you have a big enough couch, maybe just A.

      If not then E

Yeah, so hard to predict how Kane will do but you're right, Eriksen looks the better Spurs asset atm.

Fresh off a FH and need to dump Alonso now before his drop. The question is do I prioritise getting Kane or Jesus for this week? BBing in 37.

    DDG, Ryan
Robertson, Alonso*, VDH, Morgan and Lowton
Salah*, Pogba, Son, Mahrez and Kenedy
    Vardy*, Lukaku* and Murray*

    A) Vardy and Alonso --> Kane and 4.3 def(Lejuene/Tomkins) (-4)
    B) Lukaku and Alonso --> Kane and 5-5.3 def and then get Jesus for Vardy next week if need be (-4)
    C) Murray, Salah and Alonso --> Kane, Ki and a 4.9 def and have money to do the same as B or upgrade Pogba to Sterling next week (-8)

I know some of these are drastic options, but I'm open to a hit and to your suggestions. Your responses would be appreciated. 🙂

B from those. I’d also consider holding Alonso and prioritize getting 2 attackers from City/Spurs. Perhaps Pogba & Lukaku -> Eriksen/Sterling & Jesus (-4)

Thanks for the response. Yeah the idea is to get Spurs and City attackers, especially with Spurs vs Watford this week.

What do you think of Vardy/Lukaku and Salah -> Jesus and Sterling. Next week I can then do Pogba and Lukaku/Vardy to Kane if need be.

If Salah isn’t starting (which we should know by the deadline) then yeah that looks decent. Can you afford Kane & Sterling with those moves? I’m looking at that if Salah is out. If Salah is starting there’s no way I’m ditching.

I can afford it and yeah I agree with you on that one, but as I said above, I'm slightly apprehensive whether to drop Lukaku this week after remembering Arsenal's away form.

Might have to wait a couple of days.

Thoughts on Aubameyang starting for the upcoming week?

Surely Wenger won't want to put a full strength euro side out sandwiched between the two ties. Was a bit different last game to boost confidence

    Who to bench for GW36:

    A. 10.8 forward visiting Old Trafford.
    B. A player exactly half that price at home to BHA.

I think Aubameyang will surely start this time as Lacazette won't be lacking match sharpness for Europe, but Arsenal's awful away form would worry me. Sorry, don't think I can help!

It seems crazy but Auba is currently benched in my team. I think Auba has more change of blanking at OT than Barnes does at home to Brighton.
But it just feels dirty haha!

It's not luck mate, he hit the bar from a FK on Saturday. He has so much threat about him, he should be an 8m mid atm really!

The more I don't have him in my team the more in denial I am! I just thought he was the new Doucoure/Capoue but it seems he's more like the new Lampard!

Just the fact that he is so dangerous from FKs and is on pens. Palace have the players (Zaha in particular) who will win loads of set pieces for him. He has a hell of a shot on him also from range and has added assists to his game of late! Best value in the game atm imo!

It's the assists recently that have thrown me, I didn't know he had it in him, I thought he was just lucky to be getting all those penalties.

Are Serbia in the world cup? I promise I'll get him in world cup fantasy if so!

    Hello, everyone.

    Here is my front seven:

    Salah, Pogba, Son, Willian, Mahrez
    Kane, Murray, Austin

Which players should I be looking to bring in for the next two-three gameweeks? I'm definitely getting Sterling, but I'm also considering the likes of Arnautovic, Vardy, Ramsey, Jesus, Aubameyang and Silva.

Definitely top heavy. I don't have any MCI players either after my 34BB and 35FH but will look to get them in for 37 when we might have a better Idea of who is more likely to play (wishful thinking). The one positive about your team being so strong up top and weak in midfield is that it should be an easy fix. I'd personally downgrade Lukaku to a budget 3rd striker with a DGW and upgrade a midfielder to a much better player with a DGW too. 2 or 3 transfers and you can make it look much better. Good Luck

Cheers. Yeh very top heavy. And yeh that was exactly my plan for 37.

Thinking about Kaku+Albrighton+Bailly -> Ayew+Sterling+Vert. Something like that..

Might even swap out son for someone, maybe lingard. Keeping an eye on newcastle players too over the next 2 games. Could be some solid options there.
