Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Usual Service From Salah

An almost inevitable goal from the dominant captain gets Gameweek 35 off to a positive start, only for the single afternoon encounter to provide more boredom than bang.

One goal, no bonus – that’s been the standard return from Mohamed Salah since he (presumably) peaked with a 29-point haul against Watford.

That season-high total saved pretty much everybody’s four-fixture Gamweek 31, but his 59.7% Fantasy Premier League (FPL) ownership had to make do with seven points from the latest reduced slate as Liverpool blew a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at West Brom.

Salah was again the top captaincy pick, with 1.6 million managers handing him the armband. That included 43 of the top 100 managers, while 67% of the 42,000+ Triple Captain chips played were trusted on the Egyptian.

It was a third straight match in which he has scored but gained no bonus. In fact, he has been awarded extra points in just one of his last six goalscoring matches – that four-goal Gameweek 31 masterclass.

Much will depend on performances elsewhere – and in particular Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus (backed by 272,000+)– to see if the captaincy call was justified.

What we do know is that Salah appears to remain undroppable as he continues his quest for the Golden Boot, even when that chase is taking place against the backdrop of Liverpool’s Champions League campaign.

His goal against the Baggies took him five clear of Spurs’ Harry Kane as he played 83 minutes at The Hawthorns despite Tuesday’s semi-final tie with Roma looming large.

Salah suffered a loss of over 328,000 in ownership over the past two Gameweeks in light of his recent injury scare and missing fixture.

But the lead up to Gameweek 35 saw this trend slammed back into reverse. Over 158,000 managers brought Salah (back?) into their squads before today’s return.

It seems highly unlikely that they, or indeed any of his current ownership will consider going without the midfielder for any of the remaining Gameweeks, such is his level of consistency.

Incredibly, Salah has now produced a goal or an assist in 26 of 33 Gameweek appearances.

Firmino Benched, Mane Blanks

In contrast, confidence in Liverpool’s other two principle attackers will be in decline.

Sadio Mane was, somewhat predictably, hooked after 65 minutes, while Roberto Firmino didn’t even start and had to make do with a 24-minute cameo from the bench.

Mane has now be substituted after 76 minutes or less in each of his last four Gameweeks. Meanwhile, Firmino appears to be the most prone to rotation having started on the bench both in Gameweek 33 and this weekend prior to a European fixture.

Owned by 11%, Mane has either scored or assisted in six of the last eight Gameweeks and, tellingly, the two matches in which he blanked coincided with either Salah or Firmino being benched.

The latest rest for Firmino will have been greeted with dismay by the 174,000 new managers who acquired the Brazilian, no doubt encouraged by Jurgen Klopp’s promise of a strong Liverpool line-up in Friday’s press conference.

Firmino’s brief encounter with the pitch means he now has just two goals and an assist from the last seven Gameweeks.

Although his 40.3% ownership will surely hold on to him for next weekend’s Anfield meeting with Stoke City, that fixture is sandwiched between the two legs with Roma.

As a result, there will be further concerns that it could again be his turn on the bench, with both Salah and Mane retained in the starting line-up. It remains to be seen if a four-day gap either side of the tie will calm Klopp’s rotation of Firmino.

Following that, the lack of a Double Gameweek 37 for Liverpool makes sales of the forward almost inevitable.

Firmino’s replacement up front, Danny Ings, scored the opener from a Georginio Wijnaldum assist. Substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain then set up Salah’s goal.

Klopp shuffles his backline

Klopp’s other major changes involved the back four, with both Andrew Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold preserved for Tuesday’s tie.

The pair had been Liverpool’s major defensive transfer targets, with 62,000 new owners apiece, but they made way as Ragnar Klavan, Alberto Moreno and Joe Gomez came in to join Virgil van Dijk at the back.

The new-look defence did not impress, shipping two late goals after conceding just five in 12 previous matches across all competitions.

Van Dijk’s 42,000+ new owners took home just a point from the match, while the Free Hit investors in James Milner failed to gain returns from their gamble on the out-of-position prospect.

Baggies not done just yet

The Fantasy appeal of West Brom has been limited all season, and it’s now more passive than active for the run-in.

With no Double Gameweek 37 and only one home match, against Spurs, to come, even the fine form of their strikers is unlikely to prompt interest.

Salomon Rondon’s equaliser made it three goals and two assists from his last six Gameweeks, while Jay Rodriguez has scored three times in five matches. Jake Livermore was also on the scoresheet against Liverpool, with assists coming from Craig Dawson and Chris Brunt.

But the key lesson to be learned from coach Darren Moore’s three matches in charge is that the Baggies are no longer the pushovers they were under Alan Pardew – they’re unbeaten since his departure.

That should be considered when we look ahead at the schedules of the three teams – Newcastle, Spurs and Crystal Palace – still to face the Baggies.

And it should certainly apply to Mauricio Pochettino’s side as they travel to The Hawthorns as part of Double Gameweek 37 for a fixture that is no longer a shoo-in for a clean sheet or, indeed, even a positive result.

Blanks for Palace pair

Wilfried Zaha (183,000) and Luka Milivojevic (156,000) went into Gamweek 35 among the top seven most signed players prior to the deadline.

The pair certainly had some fine form to justify that interest, with three goals and two assists apiece from the previous five matches.

And their fixtures (LEI wba STK) to follow the trip to Watford might well have persuaded those new owners to hold onto the duo.

A bloodless blank at Vicarage Road could now spark an exodus, however.

Both were unlucky – Milivojevic hit the bar with a second-half free-kick, while Zaha could have won a penalty, but was instead booked for diving.

The lack of a Double Gameweek 37 now counts against the duo, with Zaha’s performance particularly underwhelming.

Playing out of position as a striker once more, he managed eight penalty area touches, but produced no key passes and zero shots.

The only joy to be had from the day was Palace’s second clean sheet in 12 matches, which took Free Hit chip managers in particular by surprise as no member of the side’s rearguard featured in the top 20 transfers-in.

Keeper Wayne Hennessey was bought by just 10,000, but five saves and maximum bonus brought in 10 points – his first double-digit haul of the season.

No sting from the Hornets

If Fantasy interest in Palace assets is on the wane, it’s non-existent where Watford players are concerned.

The Hornets have no Double Gameweek 37 and have to travel to both Spurs and Man United before the season’s end.

For those still intent on extracting some Fantasy worth from Watford, the stalemate was their third clean sheet in the last five home matches.

But back on the downside, form player Roberto Pereyra, who had goals in his last two home matches before the Palace match, was withdrawn with a groin problem.

Willian owners - keeping or selling? If he's not likely to play both GW37, I'm thinking Arnie of Gundo would be better choices.

He gives them a better chance of getting into the top 4 so I’d definitely say yes.

He may not have returned fantasy points recently, but he’s been pivotal in their attacks. He’s been more influential than Hazard at times lately.

If they get through to the final of the cup (which they should) I think he becomes an issue, since Chelsea may prioritise that.

Other fires to put out currently, and plenty of options at that price for player’s in 37.

      Keeping.

Bought at 6.7 so still think he's good value for me as the best way to cover the Chelsea attack in the double. Do you really want to gamble all that money on Hazard when there's so much value elsewhere? If I was buying now I might think twice, Arnie would be a priority over him. But having said that I'd still be worried to go without any Chelsea cover for the double, so again I don't think there's really any other option (unless you really believe Alonso can pull something spectacular out of the bag).

And as other posters have already mentioned, I just can't see any reason why Conte would drop him with the cup SF out the way, he's probably their best player at the moment (admittedly in a poorly-performing team).

To me its all about who's got to go for a City mid (see above). But otoh Pep wilm rotate, so its a moot issue. Have Christensen myself who I'll probably sell, so I'm inclined to keep Willi at this moment

If I had I'd probably keep as there would probably be more pressing issues. Reality is he was a risky pick in the first place. He was always very likely to be rotated during busy fixture spells.

Agree the risk were there in the first place. Guess it was the idea of needing Chelsea cover that led to choose him over a secure pick like Gross - who hadn't be delivering too much ahead of GW34, or Gudmundson - who was yellow flagged.

I think the FPL game should consider differentiating between attacking midfielders, (Salah, Zaha, Sterling, Silva, Sanchez, Erikson etc.) and defensive midfielders, (Dembele, Kante, Matic, etc.). In a way it already differentiates using price, but how about changing the game so that your squad consists of 2 goalkeepers, 5 defenders, 1 defensive midfielder, 4 attacking midfielders and 3 forwards. Only the defensive midfielders would get an extra point for a blank score sheet. The game could allow only picking 2 defenders as long as the defensive midfielder was picked too, otherwise no need to pick the defensive midfielder unless you wanted to. 14 possible line ups would be (5,0,4,1) (5,0,3,2) (5,0,2,3) (5,1,3,1) (5,1,2,2) (4,0,4,2) (4,0,3,3) (4,1,4,1) (4,1,3,2) (4,1,2,3) (3,0,4,3) (3,1,4,2) (3,1,3,3) (2,1,4,3)

I agree that the game has a BIG issue with defensive midfielders

For me there is only 1 option:
Classify defensive midfielders as defenders, because that's their main job, to defend.
Anything else will simply over-complicate the game.

Players like Dembele, Kante, Matic, Fernandinho could get a price tag of 6.5M, 0.5M higher than central defenders and fullbacks.

The best example is Milner, he is classified as midfielder because last year he played as LB, but he is not really a LB.

      Problem solved.

Gameweek 36 Rate My Wildcard Team

This week is another popular week for wildcarding.

Feel free to post your wildcard team here and also to offer advice on other teams.

This, hopefully, should also prove useful for those without a wildcard as it gives a good steer on key players to target and those to ditch.

Key issues I expect will be Salah - keep or dump, given likely rotation/limited minutes versus Stoke?

Kane- is he really worth investing in, or is an Eriksen/Alli double up better?

What key issues are you facing in Gameweek 36 - wildcarding or not?

If I was wildcarding I'd be looking to get

JAyew Jesus and Kane in attack... I still think fixtures will trump form for Kane. Ayew offers great value and Jesus looks a certain starter with great fixtures.

Midfield would be Eriksen and Sterling definitely. Arnautovic for the talisman with poor team tactic.

Defence is the tricky one. I guess Smalling for his DGWK prowess - looks the favoured one too among Jose's troops.

In goal - if Bench boosting DDG and Fabianski. If not BBing DDG and someone even cheaper - Hennessey perhaps.

Think BBing Lloris & Fabianski could be better. Newcastle being very overlooked on here too. Cheap defenders, good for BB! I like them for 36 and their double in 37 includes Watford. Benitez has done wonders to get them where they are and they seem to have a lot of confidence atm!

I presume most that are WC in 36 are BB in 37.

With looking at 15 DGWs in mind, defence and keepers are where the value appears to be, and looking deeper into rotations, I feel it becomes a lot easier to work out.

I think one draft with and one draft without Salah may also be required.

Looks good, assuming you are bench boosting?

I'd be wary of Monreal though around Champions Lg semi-final.

Like the Swansea focus for the cheapsheets.

I bench boosted in GWK 34 and got 20 pts which I'm very pleased with.

Some who got Long in ended up with 25+

Best use of it I think is go cheap - hope they all play and get you 16 min - any CS or assist or save point is a nice extra. That way you can focus your cash where it counts - premium players with a high ceiling.

Swansea very good team for that strategy GWK 37.

            Good luck.

Might be worth setting up your team without Salah and have pre-planned transfers to get him in if he starts, that 1.1 million price difference would give the bench a better look 🙂

      This is my draft:

      Fabianski McCarthy
      Smalling Christensen Kompany Yedlin Dummett
      Salah Sterling Pogba Tadic A.King
      Kane Jesus Vardy

      0.1 ITB
      BB 37

Really not sure about the defence, not happy with the three pricey ones. Feel Newcastle > Leicester for the budget options. Will probably end up with someone safer than Tadic in the end, want 4 points in 37 from A.King/cheap mid.

I would look second keeper to find that value - Fabs or Pickford are fine picks for the DGW. Not sure on Ramsey and Lingard either so downgrading Auba to upgrade would improve.

RMWCT for BB37. Primary aim is to find secure starters so I'm tending to steer away from the likes of United due to rotation. TV isn't great either which is limiting things. Here's the current draft:

      Pickford, Fabianski
      Kompany, Cedric, LeJeune, Yedlin, Chiwell
      Salah, Eriksen, Sterling, Kenedy, Arnie
      Kane, Jesus, J Ayew

Considering Kane->Auba and/or Jesus->Vardy to upgrade Arnie or defence.

      All thoughts welcome.

      My thoughts:

Lots of nice enabling 4.2m defenders with a double.

Davies could be interesting if Rose is out.

I've seen FPL Freddo triple up on 3 Spurs and 3 Man City heavy hitters with cheap Newcastle/Leicester filler. Looks interesting with their superb fixtures.

Salah is in my team unless Anfield Express says he is out for Stoke. May ditch him for KDB in 37 with my FT and leave money ITB to bring him back in 38 for the TC.

I would love A.Ayew in my team but not sure about his minutes. After being scarred by rotation in 34, I will only be bringing in 100% nailed on players who have played 90 minutes in at least 10 consecutive gameweeks.

Auba is another issue. It's nice being able to see what Wenger does today. Likewise the knowledge of Pep's teamsheet today is invaluable .. as is getting a sense of what will happen in the first leg of Liverpool's and Arsenal's European semifinals.

Not seeing Milocevic in any of the wild card teams. I know Palace do not have a double but those of us who only paid 4.7 for him he is a diamond. Last Three matches are against Leicester, Stoke and Wba. The last Two will probably be already relegated when they meet.
Compared with any similarly priced players that have a double I do not see them outscoring him even though they have Four games compared with Three

that´s what i tried to do as well, looked at players that have played 90 minutes consecutively myself only to see them play one game. lesson is also take into account the players fitness levels/physique/age. I thought Valencia and Alli were pretty close to beeing nailed, but they weren´t. Lukaku too? Morgan captain, suddenly gets a rest? You can´t foresee that kind of things, and that will going to happen in 37 also. But warning signs were there not to be seen; Morgan, old, fitness level not what is used to be, Puel did the same last year with Southampton, rotated a lot. Valencia was also rested last year in the same scenario, i just didn´t remember it. Alli or any of the Spurs mids were likely to get rotated, i just hoped it would´nt be Alli, which i think it would not have been unless he didn´t get all those kicks vs City but again, one could never know these things inbeforehand.

And the main reason to wc, at least for me wasn´t just the double but the games leading to it. Willian and Son obviously didn´t look like good in the double but both could have hauled massive in 32 and 33, Willians game vs West Ham is the worst game i´ve ever seen in fpl perspective.

still, after all this i probably would have gone for the same approach if i had the chance of doing it again.

      BB37 for me

1st draft (without Mo), probably will be very different in the end:P

Fabianski - De Gea (considering Dubravka instead De Gea)

Walker (most nailed City defender?), Davies (will Rose still get minutes in Spurs team?), Cedric, Yedlin, Van Der Hoorn
Eriksen, Sterling, Pogba (I hope for strong finnish from him), Arnautovic, Kenedy
      Kane, Jesus, JAyew

Please share some thoughts. Searching for some differentials, have nothing to lose really....

This is my Salah-less team for now (if Salah is in the starting lineup for 36, he will be in for Silva, with Arnie becoming Kenedy - and just reversing those in 37).

      DDG - McCarthy

      Smalling - Vert - Chilwell - Fernandez - Dummett

      Sterling - Sane - Silva - Son - Arnie

      Kane - Vardy - Ayew

I think Vardy still has goals/hunger in him, and prefer the triple up with City midfield.

This is where I am currently. Probably will switch out Alonso for Vertonghen yet which will free up some money. Loathe to sell Gross last week for Silva which worked well but I see no point bringing him back with the fixtures so went for Jesse as my Mane replacement to enable a Wilson upgrade to Vardy. Also switched Auba for Kane. I can't work both in, and having had Kane since the summer there's no way I'm going into a DGW without him.

Using my FT in DGW37 for Vvd>Maguire but I want VvD this week as having sold Mane I don't want to be exposed for Liverpool cover vs Stoke. Or should I do it now and save the bother?

      DDG

My FH week earlier in the season wasn’t too great, but not having it meant that I didn’t go overboard on DGW players last week and scored over 100 points. It’s sometimes hard to take the chips in isolation as they impact your selections in other weeks.

I partly agree with you here. I dislike the chips too.

I play telegraph as well, been my first year I’ve paid attention to it. I think a mixture of telegraph and FPL would be perfect. I think if telegraph had captain choices then I’d probably pack in FPL.

I'm on park the bus this week in Norwegian, after one match I'm on 49 thanks to a double Brann defence (Wormgoor, Teniste) and would be over 70 if I'd had Ròlanttson too. I like what they've tried but think the chip is much too powerful, effectively five captains in one (double) gameweek.

5 defender captains and no out field captain, but it means you also have to drop a decent attacker or two ... it is certainly all or nothing

Double captain is fun when one is Wormgoor 🙂

I'm genuinely undecided, don't like the chips as whole because I started playing this decades ago when it was simpler but they certainly mix the game up.

I think it would be much better if you got 2 lots and had to use the 1st batch before January. Would mix it up rather than majority all hoarding them until the end

I think with 2 WC in the season, and having 2 FH Chips might be a bit much? It always for me was going to be saved to negotiate this week 🙂

Like the FH, good fun playing this week and weaving into an overall strategy.

It would be good if we got extra chips to use in first half of the season a la WC.

      Eliteseren chips also look good.

I like free hit but maybe check back at the end of the gameweek for definitive answer. I do feel though that I am going to have to take a -4 possibly on top of another so a -8 in total to get the players in permanently as it is kind of like missing a transfer this week.
I would like to see some chips that run over multiple gameweeks e.g. clean sheet in a second consecutive gameweek scores you another +1, 3 in a row another bonus +1, 5 in a row another +1. Feels like +1, +2, +3 would be too rewarding but 3 lots of +1 feels ok. Could also do similar for goal scoring consecutively.

I like the rewarding idea of +1, +2, +3 as it would involve more strategy and plus 5 clean sheets in a row isn't as regular as people think imo

Any particular reason for hating all chips?
I haven't looked (probably should have done) but I'm guessing you've been playing for quite some time? This is only my 3rd season so I don't have any experience of playing the game without chips. I tend to find that those that have played the game before their introduction prefer without, but I quite like them tbh, spruces up the game and brings in an air of strategy...

I like it - whether it is a success with points or not.

It's a rare chance to have a one week wildcard - something when I'm helping compile the scout picks I often wish I had.

Been good focusing just on those few fixtures and nice to pick players that I wouldn't normally want long term - ie Crouch on my bench, Baines, Milner.

Also enjoyed playing it this week - took the strain out of navigating the doubles - meant I could field a strong XI with no hits, and next week have a good team in place and set up for DGWK 37.

As said - even if the points don't come in I've liked it.

Agree with that, especially for this week and you've hit the nail on the head for me when you say "even if the points don't come in I've liked it."
Sometimes people on here take this game too seriously (yes I know OR is a serious business, and of course winning MLs) and forget that this game CAN be fun.

Plenty of points or next to none, I've REALLY enjoyed it too 🙂

I’ll fins the results out today, but so far I’m enjoying it.

Unexpected issues were certain players which become very desirable and I can bring in on free hit but would want in my team after, so that’s proving tricky.

Does the free hit affect price changes? Or not like the wildcard? Jesus and sterling rises so close together were unprecedented this season.

Think of it as your pre FH team is put in cold storage. Whilst in there and you're playing with your FH team price changes will affect both teams. When you get your original team back it will be back with the price rises and falls of that week.
In your example if Jesus and Sterling were in your original pre FH team then you're coming back to a profit 🙂

Oh no I understand that side of it, but in the same way wildcards do not affect the outcome of price rises, is that the same for th free hit? Jesus and sterling both rose in consecutive nights which I don’t think ine ever seen before.

I like it. Gives you to change your team for one week in such situations or when fixtures are turning.

The only change is I would like to use the team to be set to the one before activating the FH chip and not to the team at the start of GW (i.e. if I make transfers before activating the chip, I want those to be a part of my team next week, not a part of the FH)

It would be nice but don't think they have the capability to do that just yet as you need to make at least a transfer or two before you can activate the FH chip :/

Transfers made while activating the FH and after that should be a part of FH. If I make a transfer before activating the chip, it should be counted as a normal transfer. I guess they can implement it.

Too complicated for the system, and would result in more confusion in here (you've seen how many times the question on doing a first transfer has been asked on here) and people not realising they can do it who then 'lose' the free transfer they would've had

It should stay as it is.
It's quite powerful enough without also being able to make both temporary and permanent transfers in the same game-week.

Chips are ok but it would be nice if we must use it in a SGW (blocked for DGW or use date till 31.12) or like WC one till 31.12 and than another pack of chips.
Personally hate those chips and captain. Gives advantage (captain especially) for casuals and is based purely on luck.

Choosing the right normal captains regularly requires skill as well as luck, and adds to the interest.

Triple Captain is too much of a lottery though, and I wouldn't mind losing that chip.

Not a problem at all, it opens up more strategies.

Not everyone wants to plan Burnley and Swansea’s players into a blank gameweek, much like when people didn’t free hit for 31. It opens up loads more avenues for options.

You are essentially trying to segregate this early that don’t plan to use it and those that do, when in reality there is a lot of crossover.

It doesn’t open up more strategies, it opens up an easier more obvious strategy IMO.

I just preferred this game without any chips. You needed to be a better manager back then to navigate all the BGWs and DGWs.

If you see how virg bangs on about how the WC 32 user s has failed, then in reality it doesn’t. So many variables. People wildcard on a double, before, straight after the January transfer window. Who’s to say any of those options are wrong or didn’t work?

Looks like the top 10k have their own strategies. There isn’t a single right way to play the game, you are just part of a community that edge towards the same outcome

Either the chip doesn't exist and you plan for life without it, or it does exist and you plan to make the best use of it.

If you're a better player than these 'casuals', then you should be able to outscore them over the season with or without this chip.

You don't like the chip and are entitled to say so, but I disagree with your blaming it for your failure to outscore the 'casuals' in your mini-league. (If you are beating them, then why are you complaining?)

My opinion is that it's a good chip, that I have to plan differently than I would if it didn't exist, and that if I can't outscore so-called 'casuals' by better planning over the rest of the season then the fault is not in the chip.

Never did I say that I’m actually better than all casuals, I’m sure there’s plenty better than me.

My complaint about the chip also has nothing to do with casuals finishing above me so you assuming that made it look as though you just fancied having a little dig.

Why don’t you just relax and enjoy your weekend rather than pester me with assumptions on my opinions.

With or without chips, the double and blank game-weeks still require good planning in order to negotiate them successfully.
The plans might be different, but planning is still required.

And I don't believe that the Free Hit chip especially favours the 'casuals':
Many casuals are hardly aware of the chips and may not use any of them.
Others were not aware of the importance of double and blank game-weeks and frittered their chips away too early.
And quite a few completely misunderstood the Free Hit chip, thinking that it merely allowed one additional free transfer without a 4 point penalty.

Some FPL managers will have had a shock when they realised how few matches there were in GW31 and decided to play their Free Hit chip then, without even considering that there might be another blank game-week later. Others started to make plans to play their Free Hit in GW31 several weeks earlier.

Most managers who have resisted the temptation to play their Free Hit chip earlier and have saved it for GW35 for GW35 will have planned to do so at least 4 game-weeks in advance.
If they are also keeping up with us in the overall rankings, they do not deserve to be called casuals.

Not related to this thread but I think your Chips league (GW31 to end of season) should really start counting from GW28 which is around the time the blanks for 31 is known. Because starting from 31 may not account for transfers made leading up to 31 to avoid using FH chip for example.

I'm not going to change it now, but Jay has a mini-league (The home stretch, https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/leagues/standings/1268274/classic) that started in GW28.

All but one of the top 49 positions in that mini-league are currently all held by GW35 Free Hitters.
The exception is A Mannon in 16th position who played his Free Hit in GW34.

The highest placed GW31 Free Hitter is Liaqat Hayat in 50th place, who is 50 points behind the leader.
Shirin Nizar, the leader of my January to May League, was another GW31 Free Hitter and is 51 points behind the leader.

In my Doubles, Blanks and Chips mini-league, the top 10 positions are also currently held by GW35 Free Hitters.
But Zeroual Aymen is in 11th position despite playing his Free Hit back in GW10!

We can't really make a final judgement till the end of the season, but it does appear that on the evidence so far the GW35 Free Hitters have been far more successful than the GW31 ones.

Thats quite interesting data. I joined your league today. Will prolly come in at around 100th 🙁 Do you know by % split how many are FH31 vs FH35 etc? Because raw data could be misleading.
Guess we'll see at end of season, personally I used my FH in 22 but i'm Team FH31 for next season.

There are 177 teams in my Doubles, Blanks and Chips, and I've only checked the leading ones. (I don't have an automated program to make it easier, so I have to check each one separately, and chips not played in the current game-week require a couple of extra clicks).

That probably includes at least 30 GW31 Free Hitters, enough to make it significant that none of them are currently in the leading positions, even though hits taken in GW31 were not deducted in my mini-league because it was the first scoring game-week.

Their lack of success in Jay's mini-league is probably even more significant.

The double and blank game-weeks may not be the same next season, and the chips may change too, so I think it's too early to make such decisions.

I certainly think that GW35 was a better time to play it than GW31 this season. But there is insufficient data to tell whether playing it in a double game-week might also have been a good option.

                      Not as many GW31 Free Hitters in Doubles, Blanks and Chips as I thought - only 13 out of 177 (7.3%), currently in positions 21st, 45th, 57th, 71st, 91st, 109th, 115th, 130th, 137th (2), 144th, 150th and 156th.

There are also quite a few who Free Hitted in GW34 or in earlier game-weeks such as GW10 and GW22.

Some of those currently in low positions may be there partly because they didn't play their Bench Boost in GW34, so they may regain some ground if they still have it to play in GW37.

So the comparison between GW31 and GW34 for the Free Hit is less conclusive than I thought -
perhaps it just shows that most experienced managers decided not to play their Free Hit in GW31.

WC in GW32 would have been a headache if i didnt save the FH.
Looking at my FH thus week its filled with players that i have for the 1st time like bellerin/baines/laca etx

Don't miss the AOA at all. I do quite like the FH chip.

They could improve it still with an ability to tinker with your 'real' team somehow in the background whilst the chip is still active

Chips are fine but I wouldn't mind if they didn't exist (although I'd keep wildcards).

They add more volatility to an already volatile game.

Firstly chips s should not be available in DGWs.
FH has certainly had the biggest impact on how game is played. Once I targeted this week enabled greater maximisation of WC and point harvesting around it.
I'd of had 1 player this GW if not for freehit. Potentially going into Gw37 with 13 players.
With fixture changes planned for winter break coming can see 3 or 4 free hit chips coming into the game.

My FH week earlier in the season wasn’t great, but not having it meant that I didn’t go overboard on DGW players last week and scored over 100 points. It’s sometimes hard to take the chips in isolation as they impact your selections in other weeks.

This is probably not going to be a popular view but I would like more chips in the game, with more flexibility on their usage, but with no flexibility on the WC.

Basically, 3 WCs in a season: GW1, the first GW deadline after summer transfer window closes, the first GW deadline after winter transfer window closes. So we get the chances to spruce up our teams, but it's not going to become a template "before DGW".

Having said that, I'd like to see maybe 10 or so chips (maybe even with duplicates) over the course of the season that affect the XV, allowing far more flexibility with strategies.

I loved playing the FH chip! You get a WC for one week, and WCs are always fun! I just can't help but thing that sometimes the 1FT a week game is a bit boring as you don't actually get to do much... And when you decide to save a transfer... God that's boring! I want a game that activates me more!

Disappointed with my 13 points yesterday.. Salah, Mané, Zaha and Dijk didn't quite cut it. However I've just fallen about 300 places in overall (9300 --> 9600) so with Jesus (C), Sané, Laca, Baines, Butland, Mustafi and Sterling left I could climb a bit both in overall and ML if Jesus outscores Salah. Go on Jesus!

No it’s a valid tactic. They can’t tell who you bring in but they can guess and that’s also good.

If they can deduce who you intend to bring in then I don’t see any issues with that, they’ve earned it.

We're three years into the chips and I'm yet to see how they've improved the game or kept casuals more interested, which was surely their initial intention. Casuals blow their load early with them still and "serious" players just all hoard them ready for the doubles. The playing field isn't more level, if anything it's more titled than ever.

There used to be a fighting chance of someone getting near the top with blind luck and momentum but the chips have meant so many people just overtake them on the home stretch.

I've never liked the chips. I don't even like the captain. But what's the future of these?

For me the future has to be restricting when you can play the chips, as they're clearly not going to scrap them.

My suggestion for next year is simple:

    Three chips (plus two wildcards)

    Free hit
    Bench Boost
Captain Combo (captain AND vice) - let's be fair, the triple is a real season killer

One MUST be used before half way point of season.

That would be a start at least. Most people have saved their chips this season as is, but if nothing changes next year EVERYONE will. Renders them pointless.

Have a think towers. Be brave.

Yes Think chips should be spread throughout the season Maybe half to be taken in the first half of the season instead of people sitting on them till the last few games

Hulk this! I like all those ideas. Agree that one should be forced to play one first half of season.

Ideas are fine, but I like the chips.

      Reason?

A lot of my opponents in the league use them early and I spend the whole season not first. They know I like this so they keep playing because they are beating me me. I may not be doing well but this home stretch is always when I catch up on them, and watch their groans as I overtake them using the chips.

They could have played them any way they wanted, just like me. Fact is it adds a different dimension to a game by offering more avenues to play with and more routes to success. Imagine 5r so called casuals loading up on city players before we contended on, there would be virtually no way back.

I left 4m in the bank to do Firmino to Kane this week but seeing how poor if looked yesterday having second thoughts now.
Also have Jesus and Vardy .
So should I just get him anyway?

Kane is class. A few off-form weeks but should bounce back. Cup out of the way, they'll wanna stop Chelsea getting top 4 by any means. I had him and Firmino and got Vardy on WC.

Greedy Harry might want to impress new suitors in the coming game weeks. I'm probably keeping him for the rest of the season and then never getting him again (shoulder gate soured it all).

He’s got the World Cup for that, which he’ll want to get fit for so can’t see him pushing too hard in the league if it doesn’t feel right

Hold me to it please as I pick a hard Brexit team with none of Britains finest. Might make the game slightly more interesting.

Imagine a lot of the dead teams have Hennessey and other cheapies who are playing this week, on their benches. Feel the generous green from last night after 21 points won't be as good when the gw is finished.

Might be. A lot of teams with just 8 or 9 players before WC.

Planning on going triple City for the remaining GWs especially that double in GW37 looks amazing for hauls. So how does Lukaku, Gross and Alonso to Jesus, Sterling and Kompany for -8pts sound?

A lot of people harping on about Kane. I don’t think he looked that bad yesterday, he just received no service against a well drilled United team. I don’t think since he’s come back he’s looked 100% but a blank vs United won’t be putting me off. I’d much rather him than Lukaku/Firmino/Aubameyang.

Would you take a -4 hit for the following transfers (bare in mind the DGW37)
Barnes + Mahrez > Jesus + Andy King

If I do this my attack will include:
Sterling, Son, Willian, Andy King, (Cork)
    Lukaku, Kane, Jesus

    Yay or Nay?

Can you not upgrade King to maybe Kenedy or Mili

I could but that would require a -8 hit which I'm a bit reluctant in doing...

The other alternative would be to do Lukaku > Jesus instead
