Scout Notes – Walcott Decides Low Key Clash

Theo Walcott strikes to secure an Everton victory and end Newcastle United’s run of wins, as Fantasy managers benefit from defensive returns.

Walcott converted a Yannick Bolasie cross at the second attempt, mis-controlling initially before seeing the ball ricochet back to him via DeAndre Yedlin.

It marked only the second match in which Walcott has found the net for the Toffees following a brace back in Gameweek 25.

A run of just one assist in nine Gameweeks has understandably seen Walcott decline and stall as a Fantasy attraction – he went into Monday’s encounter owned by just 169,000+ managers.

Some 8,900 of those had the foresight to bring in the winger with their Free Hit; it meant that Walcott was found in just 5.7% of squads built with that chip for Gameweek 35.

There faith in Everton’s defence was stronger.

A quiet night for Pickford

Having kept two clean sheets in the previous three at home before last night’s shut-out, the Magpies’ visit provided enough incentive for significant Free Hit investment.

Jordan Pickford was signed by 40,000+ managers before Saturday’s deadline, second only to Ederson among FPL goalkeepers.

But another 40,000 also acquired the keeper with their Free Hit, meaning that he was found in 26.1% of the chip’s squads.

Ironically, Pickford had a restful evening and was called upon to make just two saves; it’s only the second time in nine Gameweeks that he has failed to produce a save point.

As a result, the bonus points went elsewhere, with Michael Keane and Leighton Baines the chief benefactors.

Keane was a major differential in the Toffees backline. He earned the maximum bonus but was limited to an eight-point return following a booking. The centre-back was part of just 307,000 squads, which included 7,000 Free Hit managers.

Baines was a far more popular target.

Some 18,000 used a Gameweek transfer on the full-back, while another 41,000 acquired him with the Free Hit. Like Keane, he delivered eight points on the night.

Everton’s assets are now set to fade from view in Fantasy terms. While their fixtures are strong (hud SOU whu), they offer no Double Gameweek and continue to be erratic as a source of both defensive and attacking returns.

Magpies fail the chipless

While a good proportion of Free Hit managers benefited from the Everton clean sheet, those without the chip active who invested in Newcastle’s budget assets were left empty-handed.

Striker Ayoze Perez was brought in by 136,000 ahead of Gameweek 35, making him the eighth most signed player.

That investment followed a run of three goals and two assists from his last three starts.

But despite firing five shots on goal, Perez blanked, along with budget midfielder Kenedy, who was acquired by another 13,000 managers prior to the deadline.

Walcott’s goal also denied the clean sheet, as those holding keeper Martin Dubravka and full-back Paul Dummett were disappointed.

But unlike Everton, there is still some life in Newcastle’ Fantasy appeal.

They face a home fixture with a resurgent West Brom in Gameweek 36, before two fixtures in Gameweek 37 as they travel to Watford and Spurs.

Neither of those fixtures scream big returns, though Dummett and Kenedy will likely be retained and recruited as cut-price options – particularly by late Bench Boosters – for the double-header.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    Ederson - DDG
    Vertonghen - Naughton - Fernandez - Stephens - Dummett
    Sterling - Alli - Mahrez - Arnautovic - Ramsey
    Kane - Jesus - Ayew

Obviously nice to have Ederson and DDG but that defence is struggling as a result.. needs working on.

Frontline is pretty decent though - ramsey is a bit of a punt

If I ditch 1 for Fabianski, I can get a 5.5m defender in which would be Mustafi. Not sure he'd be nailed.

Dont particulalrly like Ramsey pick, especially if Ars beat AM. Mahrez also a bit meh.

Have you considered Auba instead of Jesus and adding a second City mid for Mahrez/Ramsey

Don't think Arsenal can beat Atletico. Simeone is too good for Wenger. Ramsey will then be nailed for 37 an38 as Wenger will definitely play in first team in his last few games in charge of Arsenal as he would want to go out on a high.

Mahrez will be out in 38 to get Salah. Like Mahrez's next 3 and he's nailed for 270 mins with set pieces.

        That's the thinking now.

      Great Mid - Fwd line.
I think the defence could be bolstered a bit by picking one of the Premium GK and pairing with a cheaper alternative.
11.5M is a lot to spend on both when you have some suspect defenders (IMO)

I'll be BBing in 37 and it doesn't get any more nailed players than those 2 for their defense. Would lose 1 in 38 to fund Mahrez ➡ Salah in 38.

Fair enough, thought you might say that. I do understand the appeal of Ederson as he's the member of the City back 5 you'd trust to play every week, but would still move funds around to make your defence better. Maybe sell De Gea and get Smalling?

I was going down the same double keeper route as both are the cheapest and most nailed way in to the defences, but Fabianski offers such great value too ... will review this closer to the time but at the moment am holding Ederson for a potential double digit rise in price

Otherwise I think Mahrez money could be better spent (Pogba, Lingard, Willian etc or even Mili) and the defence strengthened, Alli upgraded to Eriksen

Looking again, definitely getting rid of Gross.
Gross has 3 of his 4 remaining games away from home and he hasn't produced a return away from home since GW9 v WHam.
His only remaining home game is v Man Utd no can't expect much there either.
I'd say max. of 16 points possibility from his last 4 games, with 9 points more realistic.

Not quite... He was on fire up until about GW24... And has done almost nothign since, other than, as you say a wee flurry in 29/30 v Bour/WBA.
1st half of season he was around 7 goals 8 assists. Now at 10 goals 11 assists. The output is down and I think one or other is enough cover as Leicester have been mince.

      Tough call KOL.

I can certainly see Son being benched for some of Spurs games going forward, Moura and Lamela will steal his minutes, he's lost all form just as Mahrez has. Spurs has better fixtures though and Son can still get points off the bench!

      Keep Son imo.

Son, Mahrez is nailed on for two home games in the DGW against teams with terrible away records.
I expect Leicester to score 5 goals in those two games with him involved in at least 3.
I'd be very disappointed if Mahrez doesn't deliver double digits in the DGW.
If Son plays all 3 of his next 3 games I expect him to outscore Mahrez, but there's an IF, so prefer to keep the player without the IF.
I have both, definitely keeping Mahrez, thinking of upgrading Son to Eriksen.

Good chance of Son and Mahrez outscoring most Man City midfielders if Pep brings in Yaya, Foden, etc.

Out of the country for the next few days and not sure how much opportunity I'll have for fantasy matters in the mean time. Nice easy one for you, who scores more points this week?

    Lukaku (ARS)
    Jesus (whm)

    Thanks 🙂

Cool, thanks everyone, that's what I thought off the top of my head too but I was starting to have doubts about how much resistance Arsenal might actually put up! Will stop overthinking it 🙂

I agree he's decent but I would rather have Jesus for the run in I think. Can't have them all (I won't have Kane this week!)

That was my other option hence the question but it looks like the majority support my initial gut feel so I'm going to make the switch this week. Could easily backfire though!

What’s the name/link to that website that does statistical analysis of your season?

Getting rid of Alonso should be a priority imo. With a game against Liverpool and suspended this week, his realistic returns are much lower than his price requires. Alonso to Vert should suffice

I am keeping Alonso, he’s got a dGW and will be fresh. He can score against anyone and it’s at home. It’s an extra transfer you don’t need.

The highest score of the week is becoming irrelevant as new teams are set up for a big first week - even during GW35!

It's been irrelevant for a long time. Until they introduce a rule that says only teams registered in the first week(s) are eligible it's a pointless accolade. Almost always a new team using either Bench Boost or Triple Captain and with a number for a team name that tells you how many teams they've tried this with.

Do you like this team better than the one posted above?

    Ederson - Lloris
    Smalling - Jones - Fernandez - VDH - Dummett
    Sterling - Alli - Mahrez - Arnautovic - Ramsey
    Kane - Jesuus - Ayew

BB in 37 and save FT.

    GW 38 - Mahrez + Ederson ➡ #.9m gk + Salah for free.

I like it. But i wouldn't go with double swansea. I like to spread the risk more. But the double manu could be great if both play all the games

        It comes down to -

DDG + Vertonghen + Naughton vs Lloris + Jones + VDH

Only alternative to double swansea is double newcastle or Mogan. Swansea have more upside I feel.

Well, I don't actually think Willian is too bad a pick still to be honest!

If you're focused upon GW37 then any other Man City player you think is likely to play would be my first choice - Silva/Sane probably. Otherwise you could think about Mahrez (albeit he's out of form), Son (ditto), Ramsey (if Arsenal crash out of Europa cup and he looks nailed).

I'm not imaginative so these are all the most obvious picks!

    Hart - Ederson
    Masuaka - Smalling - Azpi - Dummet - Chillwell

Considering going without Salah for the rest of the season. Just to hard getting him in without ruining other options.

How does these moves look over the next two gameweeks: For -4

    GW36: Alonso -> Vertonghen
    GW37: Lukaku+Willian -> Jesus+Sterling

    My team:
    De Gea
    Alonso Mustafi Lowton Dunk Morgan
    Mahrez Alli Willian Lingard Gudmundsson
    Kane Lukaku Barnes

Good question. I have both + Alonso, couldn't decide if my life depended on it... maybe Willian most at risk after Conte clash? OR it could be he was just preserved for the league. According to Conte Chelsea will be fighting for top 4 full throttle, then he can't afford to punish Willian.

      Ah jeez, this game...
