The Big Numbers – Gameweek 35

Next, we take a look back at the post-match data in our usual members’ analysis of the previous Gameweek.

We skew our analysis towards Double Gameweek 37 assets, as Man City, Arsenal and West Ham’s attacks all feature. Meanwhile, Newcastle’s form at both ends of the pitch is also assessed prior to their favourable weekend fixture and double-header.

Playing all these chips has made the game very fun in recent weeks.

I think FPL would be even better if we are given a full set of chips to play before and another after xmas (like the 2 WCs)

Would be great fun to have a TC and FH to play on single GWs in the first half of the season, rather than just saving them all for the DGWs.

    Agree or disagree?

I see the point of TC, gives people way behind the chance to catch up with a differential TC.
WC was useful in previous incarnation, now just used for fa cup related dgw.

Agree. Currently chips are generally held for the DGWs - and most FPL players wait til then. Having two sets of chips brings in more strategy and planning (early on in the season) that does not depend on DGWs.

Refer to chip usage to GW35:

Disagree. If you basically have chips to get you out of more situations where you have to plan I think it levels the game more and casuals can get away with not looking ahead etc.

I would like a chip that perhaps doubles your VC score as well as C because my VC pick feels pointless every week.

Not sure we need two lots but maybe - certainly one or two which have to be used at a time where SGWs are the norm (such as pre-xmas, outside of possible WCC rescheduling).

I’m not sure we need to double up on chips...before FH arrived I could see the value in having 2x TC and BB and scrapping the 3rd chip...

but I am keen on suggestions to inject chips into the first half of the season.

How about creating one more chip (and perhaps reviewing BB and TC) so we have 2x WC and 4x different chips. 1WC and 2x chips must be used before and after end of January. 2x further chips can be activated thereafter. Up to you when you use them, and holding one for a rogue January DGW could be very much risk or reward given the way they fall is uncertain til pretty much the last minute.

        I strongly agree.

As it is now everyone just saves them for the blank/double gameweeks at the end of the season and it is really, really hard to navigate these fixtures without them. I didnt have my Free Hit for BGW35 and I had to do some tough and complex planning that ultimately hurt me more than it helped.

I would rather not have any chips (except WCs) than keep the current setup but FPL without chips I fear will be a lot more static, predictable and boring. Having chips just adds the possibility that you can actually make up more points and this keeps everyone more engaged.

My opinion is that a double set of chips will keep everyone from having the same strategy (save for BGW/DGW) and at the same time keep the game dynamic and more engaging.

I think the WC, BB and FH chips should all be retained, not so sure about the TC chip which is too much of a lottery. I'm also strongly in favour of the idea that one of the chips should be played first half of season, to make it even more challenging to plan around end of season DGW's.

Another idea I'd like to be considered is to have an extra FT each GW, but with the caveat that it may only be used on flagged players, and cannot be rolled over. I think it would make the game more dynamic being able to turn around a stale team.

I don't really agree or disagree, I enjoyed the game when it didn't have chips and I enjoy it now with them.

One thing I will say though is that all the people advocating having to use a chip in the first part of the season because there are no blanks or doubles: Liverpool will have a blank in December next year if they win the champions league due to participation in the club world cup.

Perhaps FPL might give everyone additional free transfers, Free Hits or Wildcards during the winter break?

The mid-season Qatar World Cup in four years time will also be extremely disruptive.
The World Cup should always be played in the summer months, so it should never have been awarded to them.

I think you are right. Lots of casual type players, the majority, use them early because they like using them.

More serious players should not be put out by this. The element of luck is very high anyway so just ‘skill’ alone cannot prevail.

It’s inteneded to be fun and 38 weeks is a long time. So, Yes.

        Disagree.

Too many chips takes the fun out of it and makes the game more luck-based and less skill-based. Would like them to remove TC and captaincy from the game as captaincy involves luck more than anything else in this game.

TC is luck, but getting the captaincy right regularly requires skill.

If you think TC is luck, you think captaincy is luck too, because it's just a higher multiplier but the same concept. So we've established that at least.

So you believe that since captaincy is done for 37 weeks instead of just 1, there's a skill to getting it right most of the time? Wrong. You can get it right more often than not easily. It would be abnormal for someone to have more captain fails than captain successes in a season. There are always 1-3 obvious candidates based on fixtures, and you have all these resources like FFS, FPL Show, etc. to know who most people are captaining and why. It doesn't take much skill. But that's not the point. The point is that all it takes is a few fails to have a big effect.

Let's take this week for example. Salah and Kane are top of the Captain Poll. There are strong reasons to captain both and majority of the people here with great ranks think so. So let's say the one you captain ends up blanking and the other one gets 15 points. That's 13 points you've lost. That's also a good chance you may be getting a red arrow this week. Not skill, just bad luck right?

How many captain fails do you get in a season, if you're a decent player? 5? 10? Maybe a little more? Is it safe to say that this accounts for about a 50k difference in your rank? (just guessing here, could be more, it really depends)

My point is that captaincy can decide the difference between a green arrow and a red arrow so easily, and even getting it wrong 5-10 times a season can create a significant rank difference that doesn't accurately reflect skill. And this can happen to even the best players.

TC and regular captaincy both require a combination of luck and skill, and so does every little decision that we make when playing FPL.
Single decisions such as TC contain a very high percentage of luck. Look at GW22 and GW31 for example.

Anyone can have a lucky or unlucky game-week, but over the course of a season good and bad luck should even themselves out to at least some extent and have a much smaller effect.

To get more decisions, such as the captaincy, right over the course of a season than most other players do is not possible without skill.

Anyone who Triple Captained Salah in GW31 either just got very lucky or were taking a punt that came off. Those who Triple Captained Kane in GW22, as even some quite strong players did, were a bit unlucky. But Ben Crabtree being far more successful with his captain choices last season than any of his rivals required a lot of skill.

                5 years, 11 months ago

It doesn't necessarily even out. It's more random. How many times have you captained Kane over Salah in a gameweek and Kane ended up blanking while Salah hauled? Was that just because you had no skill? There have been plenty of gameweeks where these 2 have been strong captaincy options, and you could have easily got it wrong more often than right. It won't necessarily even out.

If Ben Crabtree's captaincy successes last season were due to skill, why is he having a poor season this time? (he is, isn't he?)

Ben's poor season this time is mainly due to his no-Liverpool players policy (he's an Everton supporter).

Captaining Kane over Salah this season has often been a poor decision. Many FPL managers took far too long to realise this.

I only captained Kane 7 times, 5 of which were captaincy failures - but 2 of these were before I owned Salah, 1 when Salah didn't play, and 2 when Salah also blanked.
Salah (captained 9 times), Lukaku (7), Sterling (3), Rooney, Kolasinac, Jesus and Aguero (once each) were all more successful.
The only worse captains were Alonso (twice) and Sanchez, Sane and Mahrez (once each).

I think most of the purists here disagree, as do I. I'd have no captains and have half points for bench players coming in, or maybe some system where the first sub gets more points than the third etc. Then there would be an emphasis on getting selections and squads right week on week.

Happy with two wildcards as a season can be decimated by injuries which is I think unfair on a manager (though picking injury prone players is a gamble). You need to have an option to get out of jail if 4-5 injuries happen.

Would be good if FPL could somehow set it up so that you could tailor the type of game you wanted to use for your ML or for those that don't like TC/BB/FH.

Well, that suggestion provoked a contrary response.

Many want to keep the game fairly dullard style.

Others wanna have fun whilst playing the game.

38 weeks is a long time and to sustain interest it needs points of injection with opportunities for catch up, or indeed push on.

More interaction, even whilst the game is on, would be welcome, like changing captains, bringing subs into play, etc.

Well this has resulted in quite a reaction of polarised opinions, which is great!

I personally like the idea of 2 sets of chips, as it's a long season of 38GWs so I don't think it would result in the game being too gimmicky.

One opinion that I see often is that it would benefit casuals who don't plan and just use chips to bail them out. I strongly disagree with this.

Planning when to use your chips has been the most important part of my season so far and has boosted my rank in recent weeks. Just ask any 'casuals' who used their FH chip earlier in the season only to encounter these horrendous blank GWs and a huge drop in rank.

Either way, however the game develops, it'll still be good fun.
        Appreciate all the opinions 🙂

The TC and BB chips should not count in head-to-head leagues, knock-out competitions or weekly prizes.
In fact, I wouldn't mind losing the weekly prizes altogether.
The additional points obtained from these chips should only apply to classic mini-leagues and to the overall rankings.

Most of us experts would be happy to lose most of the chips, but it isn't going to happen because FPL Towers don't want to lose all those casuals, so we just have to accept them and adapt our play accordingly.

Most of the replies here want fewer if any chips, but we mustn't forget that we are a minority who are probably considerably outnumbered by the casuals.

With all the talk of scrapping the chips and all, why not give option of 5 chips out of which you can choose only 3 ?

There won't be this mass of people following a certain trend .With this there will be many different strategies, different plans , and will add to the fun.

With this you can add another constraint that the chips cannot be used in. a BGW or a DGW , it will add to the fun

Klopp said that they have to win the Stoke Match. Salah rested after 75'.

I think Salah starts. And maybe this GW is our last chance of captaining him. 🙂

They conceded 2 away goals after he was taken off. Klopp probably feels a tiny bit silly. I still think he starts but it’s created enough doubt to give us non owners a little bit of hope.

At that point he was likely rested that in mind. But Roma scored 2 after that. Cannot see him playing this weekend, but only my opinion. Worst case scenario would cost CL win. Too risky imo.

Yes, perhaps. But on the other hand in Scoutcast there was much talk about Jesus needing Sterling close to him. And also talk about Sterling being rested sooner than later. There can be a big trap.

Who have you got instead of VDh?

The thing is even if Smalling and Jones start 1 game each, they cover DDG's 2 games. If the play more that's just a bonus. Lloris and Vert cancel out each other anyway.

So it all comes down to VDH/Morgan/Yedlin vs Stephens which may well be equal.

Could also see at least one of smalling and jones playing both in 37, as they are the two best performers, and that Mourinho is usually consistent with his cb's if he feels like they currently works best together

For city I have Jesus and Sterling

I'm not sure I'll be taking further hits. There are some uncertainties in my team like Alonso, Robertson and Morgan but whether I sell or bench them really depends lol.

And I see the Arsenal fixture as a good game. Arsenal are the only team in the league that haven't got a single point away from home this year. It's almost a certain loss since they'll be playing a weak team as well.

Hmm.. in the other game im playing I already have Eriksen + Kane... could have two more (max is 4), but seems a bit overkill

Klopp is going to change his tried and tested methods and play Salah because a bunch of fantasy managers held hands tonight and wished it.

Don't own him but think he'll get some time, enough to score.
              Hoping he doesn't though.

            Hi all,

Planning my transfers for the dgw and have got it down to 2 options. Need some voices of reason here.

            A. Willan and drummett
            B. Ramsey and chilwell

My logic as follows, but you'll see why I can't settle on one...

            A. Willan at home both games but form of late is patchy, and didn't play vs burnley, then benched in the cup against Southampton after 60. Drummett is the only nailed on 4.2 def playing dgw, but fixtures are terrible and both are away.
            B. Arsenal fixtures favorable but Ramsey is an injury risk and certainly rotation risk with Europa league, while chilwell is playing at home both games and seems nailed on.

Waiting till next week to pull the trigger and check this weekends lineups and form. Any help or advice would be awesome, or perhaps a different option. Would love to discuss and debate. I have 11.3 to spend. Thanks in advance.

Pretty much agree with you. I sold Willian for those reasons & Sterling, although his stats aren't so bad.
Ramsey would be a good pick if we knew he'd get both games, but we don't.
Willian if I had to pick one, but neither appeals. Maybe Arnie - fixtures aren't brilliant but great form, nailed, and some other stats in the article above.

Looked at arnie but away to Leicester and home to Man U worries me on attacking return

                Son salah gundogan Carroll xxx

With only TC left is too much to make up?

Im I insane to consider Sane? Surely will play next and at least the last home game in 37 where they get crowned as the winning team usually field regular 11 in that game.. with a bit luck, might even play all three games as he was rested last week

He's not sure to play the next. Otamendi hasn't started 2 games in a row.

Not insane but a known risk. I'd have picked him but just got burnt on that in 35, plus however much Sterling fluffs up he keeps scoring pts.
