Scout Notes – Liverpool Close in on Euro Final

Liverpool make giant, if not decisive, strides towards a place in the Champions League final with a 5-2 win over Roma that sends out decidedly mixed messages for Fantasy managers.

If it weren’t for the Italians’ eye-opening comeback against Barcelona in the previous round, we’d all be forgiven for thinking that Jurgen Klopp’s side had already done enough to make the second leg something of a formality.

But that was precisely what did for the Spanish giants in the quarter-finals, and Roma are now faced with exactly the same task – claw back a three-goal deficit to make it through on away goals.

Liverpool were 5-0 up and cruising with 10 minutes to go last night, courtesy of two goals each from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, with Sadio Mane the other name on the scoresheet.

Salah and Firmino also provided a brace of assists each, with the final goal coming from James Milner’s corner.

At that point, even Klopp at his most cautious must have been thinking of who he could rest in the second leg for the potentially crucial Gameweek 37 trip to Chelsea that follows four days later.

Ten minutes and two Roma goals later, European rotation returned to being a luxury he could ill afford, which makes this Saturday lunchtime’s visit of Stoke City the obvious place for teamsheet tinkering.

But the coach has a dilemma.

Liverpool have a potential five matches left to play this season – three in the league, the conclusion of the Roma tie and then, if that is successfully negotiated, the Champions League final itself.

They are also within touching distance of securing their place in the European competition for next season.

Win against Stoke and avoid defeat at Stamford Bridge, and Gameweek 38’s home match with Brighton becomes a dead rubber in which Klopp can rest key players ahead of the European final, although that is a full 13 days later.

Does he stick with a ‘front-loaded’ approach involving getting the season sorted as soon as possible, or twist by prioritising the Champions League semi-final and hoping that a win against Brighton will confirm a top-four finish?

Klopp’s decision will have a major impact on the make-up of Saturday’s side for a match which, on paper, looks like being a routine home win.

Liverpool have no Double Gameweek 37 to attract new Fantasy investment in their stars.

But in Salah (59.8%) and Firmino (39.8%) they have two of the three most owned players in the game.

Some 35,000+ managers have made the Brazilian the third most transferred-out asset heading into Gameweek 36, although that has yet to make a significant dent in his 2.4 million ownership.

The major concern is that Firmino – who played into stoppage time last night – has been rested to the bench in each of the last two league fixtures prior to Champions League duties.

Meanwhile, Salah’s ownership is simmering. Some 8,000+ have sold him on so far ahead of Gameweek 36, while more than 12,000 have brought him in.

Klopp’s decision to withdraw the Egyptian on 75 minutes arguably indicates that Salah should retain his weekend start as Liverpool attempt to lock down their top four place.

Indeed, the idea of significant weekend rotation were also downplayed by Klopp’s comments post-match.

“I’m already in the Stoke game, to be 100 per cent honest…I’m much more interested about the Stoke game in the moment than about the second leg against Roma. That’s a massive game for us, and we need to be ready for that. We’ll try everything to be ready for that.”

That could hint at a strong line-up against the Potters, with perhaps at least two (and maybe all) of the front three on the pitch. Klopp’s press conference, later this week, could and should offer more clues.

However, should Paul Lambert’s side succumb to an early barrage of attacks, Liverpool’s front three, including Salah, will likely give way to be preserved for Wednesday’s return in Rome.

That could be a factor that has us sway towards Harry Kane as a captain. The Spurs striker is bidding to make up ground on Salah in the Golden Boot race when he faces Watford on Monday night. Kane is currently dominating in our captain poll, with over 46% of the vote to the Egyptian’s 25%.

Klopp perhaps has a bigger dilemma in midfield after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (3.1%) picked up a knee injury and was stretchered off before the 20-minute mark last night.

“Oxlade, it’s probably a really bad injury. If we can say that already before the scan, that’s never good news so that means for us it’s a massive blow, of course. We have still a few very important games to go and the squad doesn’t get bigger in the moment, so we obviously need to be creative in the next few games.”

The Liverpool coach has few central midfield options left with which to exercise that creativity, as both Adam Lallana and Emre Can are also injured.

That should improve Milner’s prospects of retaining his start as an out-of-position defender against a Stoke attack that has just two goals in their last four away matches.

The Reds have recorded home shut-outs in three straight league matches, but working out who will play in the backline this weekend also looks tricky.

Klopp fielded Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren and Andrew Robertson last night after resting them for Gameweek 35, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he springs something similar on Saturday, leaving Virgil van Dijk as the most likely starter.

Of course, the recent trend of leaked and accurate Liverpool line-ups via social media may make these teamsheets concerns academic.

Once the Stoke match is done, there is likely to be a mass exodus involving Liverpool assets as managers flock instead to those with double fixtures in Gameweek 37.

The exception, as ever, will be Salah – if Kane starts to claw back his five-goal lead in the Golden Boot race, Klopp seems very unlikely to rest the winger.

A more informed decision can be made on that once the Champions League tie is finally resolved next week.

Based on the evidence of the first leg, that might not be the case until fairly late next Wednesday night.

No way you won't get a goal or 2 there with the pace you have against Fazio.

How roma have such a great defensive CL record is beyond me on that showing.

Prizing wantaway defender Alderweireld from Spurs would be the ideal solution in my opinion. He wouldn't be cheap, but is proven in the PL. Can't see many teams scoring against a centre back pairing of him and VVD!

Firmino is something else. Only 1 less goal contribution than Ronaldo this CL campaign.

There isn't many folk who play like Firmino does. He has about 3 roles rolled into one.
A totally unique player and often overlooked at just how much he contributes.

I can probably do a combination of Mahrez, Gross & Vardy to Son, Kenedy & Jesus, either for -8 this week, or a -4, keep Vardy and get Jesus next week for free. But that would mean I end the season with no Sterling (keeping Salah). Would you do it?

    a) Salah and Firmino both start
    b) Salah starts, Firmino doesn't
    c) Firmino starts, Salah doesn't
    d) neither Salah nor Firmino start

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What are you doing with Salah and co following Liverpool's Champions League win...but concession of two vital away goals for Roma.

Is it simply a case of waiting to see what Anfield Express say?

If Salah is benched what is your plan?

If Salah plays will you captain him - or is he still at risk of reduced minutes?

I think he'll probably play but still think Kane might destroy Watford if he's still chasing the golden boot and am likely to captain Harry. But yeah, wait for Anfield Express first for sure

Will wait for Anfield Express. But this week he could even come off the bench unlike Everton as he wasn’t injured.

Reduced mins looks very likely if he starts and Pool are winning.
But he can do the damage in 70 mins or 13 mins (last time against Stoke).

It’s a very tough decision but I think I’m keeping him unless confirmed he’s being benched.

I simply can't see Salah being rested, but as you say we will hopefully have Anfield Express to bail us out anyway. If he starts he absolutely has to be captain, last night the torch of the best player in the world was well and truly passed from Messi to Salah.

Az must be shitting himself not owning him! Kane is a pale shadow of himself too at the moment. Half injured, out of form, and playing for a team which hasn't won in its last 3 games. Members of the squad are preparing themselves for a depature and even Pochettino was insinuating he had taken them as far as he could after the game on Saturday. Hardly adds up to captaincy material does it?

You’re right about Spurs/Kane recent form, but I remember many people on here saying the same thing in Dec. Even when their form is poor he can score two hattricks in a row.

He can when he is fully fit, but it doesn't look like he is at the moment. I'd want to see evidence of him back to somewhere approaching his best before I would feel comfortable captaining him over Salah.

Yeah i do agree. I think i have a more difficult decision as I dont have him. Either I get him now for -8 hit, or for GW37 and -4 hit. I always planned to get him back for GW36 but his form and spurs’ form are making me question this. I’d appreciate any advice!

Messi is still brilliant, I never said he was on the scrapheap. But like Ronaldo, he's the wrong side of 30 now and they're both starting to slow down. Whereas Salah is only 25, with scope to improve over the next 3-4 years. His goals and assists ratio this season eclipses both Ronaldo and Messi, so yes, I do think the torch is in the process of being passed.

The original question Jonty asked was posed as whether Salah was a captaincy option this week. The other contender for the armband appears to be Kane. Looking at their recent form, its not even a contest worth debating.

If Messi was at home to Stoke you'd captain him wouldn't you? 😉

Ah, for me, I would actually have to take two hits, -8, to create funds (e.g. Alonso and Mahrez to defender and Salah). Not likely going to do this, yet would have expected some discussion for folks in this situation. Thanks Rumour Mill.

yeah a minus 8 isn't great, especially as salah doesn't have a double. Also depends who the defender coming in would be of course

Hmm what if you don't own Salah but have the cheap alternative that is Mane. Sell Mane for Salah for -4 (as don't quite have enough in the bank)?

The -4 would mean swapping Shaq for Kenedy.

I'd need a hit to get him so I'm not sure it's worth it. I also want to get Jesus in so to get both would be a -8 or can just Jesus for free

I'm on wildcard - already switched Mane out to fund Jesus, and Virgil for Maguire. Holding Salah, I think he'll play this week in which case I will captain. Plan is to give myself the option of switching to Eriksen for 15 DGW'ers next week but whether I actually do it is another matter!

He’s fit, he’s in the form of his life, he’ll have 3 days rest before Stoke, then 4 days after Stoke, he came off 20 mins early, season is nearly over, he's chasing records.

He's the most in form player on the planet at the moment, unless he's carrying a niggle he doesn't need a rest.

If he starts he's 100% captain, we saw last night the havoc he can cause in 70 minutes.

      - If he does not start, he will make way for Sterling. (Mahrez>Salah @GW38 though)
      - If he starts together with Mane and Firmino, I will keep and captain him.
      - If he starts with Firmino benched, I will keep but may consider captaining Kane.
      - In case of no leakage, I will keep but captain Kane. (In my opinion, %75 he will start but %25 is a big risk for captaining him)

If Anfield express say he is not starting think I'm selling for eriksen.

I'll almost certainly captain him tho if he is starting - although something is pulling me to Kane- particularly if threat of the Liverpool team is heavily rotated....

For me it's not just about Salah getting benched, but Firmino too. I think that Salah's points potential is drastically reduced without Firmino on the pitch - he actually looked quite poor against West Brom. I'd say there's a 90% chance of Firmino getting benched, so i'm probably gonna sell Salah for Eriksen and get him back for 38.

So I'm going to keep him for sure, even though he's benched.

As for captaincy, haven't decided yet who I'll put the armband on. But yeah, it'll be one of Kane/Salah.

If Firmino starts, then Salah is captain material, but if Bobby is rested on bench or out of the team - then just keep him.
I can't undarstand people who are ditching Salah - the lad is due more record breaks and the momentum he buided up is a platform for at leas 1-2 hauls till the end of the season!

Just think Pep will want to rotate as much of the squad a possible. Start figuring out who will be in plans for next season

i am thinking that, with the title clinched, there is a chance he may be given compassionate leave again to be with his family.

I'm asking the same question. Convinced myself that he should now start the final four after having pretty much two weeks off

I wouldn't think so. He should come back into the line you you would expect. But it's a risk alright.

I have quick questions to help me up with my WC if you have the time.

    1. Iwobi good option and worth getting him or just go cheaper for 5th mid?

    2. Kenedy or young or T.carroll/king? Any better option?

    3. If i won't get spurs, man city defence and have smalling, who would u go for?

I’m currently about 1,300th overall. I have no Salah, no Kane and no City. Will have eleven doubles for GW37 and I plan to go without all of these “essentials” in a balls to the wall stab at rocketing into the top 1k for the first time ever.

    This is:

    A) a terrible idea which will fail horribly
    B) genius, your gamble will pay off!
    C) not the brightest and will probably lead to tears but good on you for trying

Haha... Listen if it works it works.
I have no Salah and No Kane.
I do have Jesus / Sterling / Son / Alli which I'm hoping compensates.

      Good luck.

        Thanks man, same to you.

I have a team full of punty doubles that will probably do nothing...and yet...AND YET

        Alonso
        Willian
        Mahrez etc

High ceilings but low low floors.

You only live once though right? And it’s almost like this is just a stupid game and doesn’t actually matter 🙂

Thats it. Go all in and hope.

My team is relatively template away from the big hitters. I'm hoping it pays off though.

          DDG/Ryan
          Monreal/Ward/Valencia/Morgan/Lowton
          Alli/Son/Mahrez/Willian/Sterling
          Vardy/Barnes/Jesus

Pretty similar, I have Lukaku for Jesus, Eriksen for Alli and no Sterling but basically the same otherwise.

Top 500 here I come lol

It was reposted quite quickly though. Someone posted his team - and used him as the source. Kind of a fudge but it stayed up as far as I know.

Ah ok. I guess the nature of the internet is once these things come out its difficult to put a lid on it! If BF and AE post the same team then I think we can say with confidence that is what it will be.
