The Watchlist Updated – Defence

With the reduced Gameweek 35 now behind us, we’ve updated our Watchlist rankings have been updated ahead of the remaining fixtures.

For those unfamiliar, the Watchlist offers mid-term player recommendations for the upcoming rounds of fixtures. They can be found in your sidebar on desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet.

These highlight our current thoughts on player selection for each position, listing the factors that contribute to their given rank.

Double Gameweek 37 understandably dominates our thinking, then, given that 12 teams will play four matches in the final three rounds of fixtures.

Our analysis gets underway with a look at the main contenders in defence, beginning with the goalkeepers.

The Goalkeepers

Man United’s David De Gea (5.9) remains at the summit of our standings for the run-in.

The Spaniard offers two home fixtures against Arsenal and Watford on either side of his trips to Brighton and West Ham in the penultimate round of matches.

With question marks over the make-up of Jose Mourinho’s back four, De Gea – the second most popular player in FPL, with an ownership of 44.67% – looks the safest route as he looks to add to a total of 17 clean sheets.

Only four keepers have made more saves than his total of 108, earning the Red Devils’ number one a total of 24 save points.

As a result, he leads the way among all goalkeepers and defenders on 161 points in FPL.

Although premium-priced alternatives Ederson (whu HUD & BHA sot) and Hugo Lloris (WAT wba & NEW LEI) have stronger schedules, few will be looking to invest in a Man City or Spurs keeper at this points, with more compelling options in defence and/or attack at both clubs.

Lukasz Fabianski is our preferred cut-price option as Swansea prepare to play three times at home (CHE bou & SOT STK) in the final three Gameweeks.

Five of the Welsh side’s last six clean sheet have been recorded in front of their own fans, while the Pole’s propensity for save points keeps his tally ticking over.

Fabianski has earned at least one save point in 24 of his 34 league outings, totalling 31 save points, and, at 4.7, looks the ideal partner for De Gea for those set to play their Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 37.

Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka (4.5) is another budget option for Bench Boost managers.

The Magpies have conceded just one goal in their last four home matches and host West Brom this weekend prior to their Double Gameweek 37 (wat & tot).

The downside is that he’s not been kept as busy as Fabianski – the on-loan Slovakian has failed to collect a save in each of his last six outings.

Elsewhere, Kasper Schmeichel (5.1) is one of only two keepers – along with Thibaut Courtois (LIV & HUD) – to play at home twice in Double Gameweek 37.

Although they’ve kept just two clean sheets in their last six, the Foxes have allowed the opposition just 27 shots inside the penalty area – only Man City (15) have been more resilient.

Ben Hamer – at 4.3 – could come into contention for the visit of West Ham and Arsenal if the Dane fails to recover from the knock that forced him to miss the second match of Leicester’s Double Gameweek 34.

The Defenders

With his left-back rival Danny Rose still recovering from injury, Spurs’ very favourable schedule (WAT wba & NEW LEI) elevates Ben Davies to the top of our defender rankings.

The Welshman’s creativity is a big part of his appeal. Priced at 5.8, Davies has supplied 44 scoring chances for team-mates – at least nine more than any other backline rival – while no defender has earned more than his seven assists.

Indeed, having also found the net twice, Davies has been involved in nine goals this season – more than any defender in FPL.

Meanwhile, Spurs boast the third most resilient defensive record (31 goals against) in the top-flight and have recorded 14 clean sheets so far.

Should we hear news of Rose’s return to the squad for Monday’s tie with Watford, then it would be Jan Vertonghen who becomes the consideration, though there is every chance that Davies will still be handed starts in each of Spurs’ remaining three home matches.

Benched for each of the last two Gameweeks, we feel that Nicolas Otamendi will return to the Man City teamsheet as Pep Guardiola’s starts to ration the minutes of Vincent Kompany.

Ranked second only to Marcos Alonso for shots (31) and goals (four) at the back this season, the Argentine is also placed second for bonus points from the back, with 18.

The forthcoming schedule (whu HUD & BHA sot) looks very persuasive for those looking to invest in a defence that’s conceded fewer goals (25) than any side on their way to collecting 16 shutouts.

Otamendi is currently the most popular defender in FPL thanks to a 26.7% ownership.

Swansea’s aforementioned trio of home matches boosts the prospects of Alfie Mawson.

The centre-half has produced all of his attacking returns –two goals and an assist – at the Liberty Stadium this season, recording a total of 16 efforts in the box in 2017/18.

If you consider his cost of 5.1 somewhat lofty, though, Mike van der Hoorn (4.4) offers a cheaper option in defence, while Fabianski is also kinder on the budget in goal.

Having started each of the last 12 league matches, Chris Smalling currently appears immune to Jose Mourinho’s rotation at Man United.

The top transfer target in defence ahead of the weekend deadline by some distance, Smalling has earned over 32,000 new owners on the back of three goals in the last six league fixtures.

At 5.6, he looks an ideal partner for De Gea for those looking to double-up on the United defence, though with a spot in the FA Cup final now secured, Mourinho’s teamsheets may yet spring a surprise or two before the season is done.

With his team-mate Marcos Alonso still suspended until Gameweek 37, Cesar Azpilicueta is currently our favoured pick from the Chelsea rearguard.

The top-ranked defender for bonus points (22), Azpilicueta has turned in his most attacking season since arriving at Stamford Bridge, tallying two goals and six assists.

Certainly, three of the Blues’ remaining four matches (swa LIV & HUD new) look conducive to clean sheets although Antonio Conte’s men have struggled for resilience of late, mustering just a single shut-out in their last ten league outings.

Something to consider, then, given that Azpilicueta comes in at a hefty 6.9.

Ben Chilwell is our standout budget defender for the run-in.

Priced at 4.4, the left-back has usurped Leicester team-mate Harry Maguire in recent matches, tallying two assists and four bonus in the last five Gameweeks in addition to a pair of clean sheets.

Southampton’s Cedric Soares (BOU eve & swa MCI) and Brighton’s Lewis Dunk (bur MUN & mci liv) also offer attacking potential in the sub-5.0 bracket.

Soares has supplied two assists in three appearances under Mark Hughes, while Dunk has chipped in with a goal and assist over the Seagulls’ last six league outings.

Meanwhile, Paul Dummett offers little attacking potential but, at a cost of just 4.2, the Magpies full-back looks an ideal squad filler, particularly for those planning to Bench Boost in Gameweek 37.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

What is your strategy for defence for the remaining for few fixtures.

Are you looking to bulk up your backline with premium options from top sides?

Or are you seeking to reduce your rearguard value and opt for budget options?

Who is top of your defender watchlist?

And you is out of the running for you?

Rely upon Ben Mee remaining injured, enabling double BUR defence to continue.

Sell Alonso to facilitate mid targets.

Strategy will be most probably to stick to players that I have from GW32 wildcard (Alonso, Vertonghen, Lowton, Morgan, Femenia). Can't really spend transfers on defence myself so probably will keep Alonso too. If I'd get rid of Alonso I'd probably get Smalling in.

I feel as if this is the point in the season where teams don't care too much about clean sheets. Some clubs are going for goal records (either for individuals or as teams). This sort of thing affects both the team involved and their opposition.

Other complications arise too, like Terry being subbed on 26 minutes in his last game for Chelsea, players being subbed off for ovations, that sort of thing.

There is also the weather factor. Warmer, dryer, stiller conditions suit teams who play on the deck, who tend to be the strongest attacking teams such as Man City and, traditionally, Arsenal.

Anecdotally it feels as if there are more goals in the final couple of GWs, I certainly believe so, and so I will not be spending big to get defenders in.

It’s all about the power front 3 of Lukaku, Jesus and Kane for me. This means weakening the defence and relying on DDG and Smalling to deliver as the more expensive players.

The likes of Masuaku, Bednarek, Simpson and Lowton will make up the other 2 positions in my 3-4-3.

Stuck with Valencia, Christensen and Dunk. Would prefer other options but short on transfer now so may just do Dunk > Mawson for GW37 and pray Christensen and Valencia get the starts.

I'm looking to perhaps keep Alonso. The main exit plans for him involve hits and it seems self defeating.

Can already go into GWK 37 with two Spurs and two city attackers. I guess I could do Alonso to Davies - but the spectre of a Rose recovery always looms large with him.

Value for money (pts per mil) tend to be defenders. I will have to captain choices but defenders in 36 37 38 are:
Bavies Kompany Smalling and as I have bb Ederson and DDG ( Naughton and Lascelles spare)
Really a case kane or no Kane to have that power.

Currently on a backline of Bailly, Davies, Morgan, Lowton, Fernandez.

One of these is injured and 2 appear to have been dropped, so I may struggle to get a full 11 out this weekend! The biggest problem is Bailly, 6m of budget doing absolutely sod all. What a catastophic decision it was to get him instead of Smalling on wildcard.

I think for this weekend I will cross fingers and see what happens, but for DGW37, Bailly may become another premium who actually plays matches, such as Smalling, or possibly even Kompany, Walker or Mendy, which would be another way to tap into the city fixtures. Any advice on which premium to get?

I'm focusing on utilising my transfers for mid and attack.

      I have
DDG/ Mawson/Vertongen/Chilwell plus Lowto and Tarkowski at the back, so don't see any need to change.

got plenty of cash to free up with Lukaku Kane and Jesus up front plus Mahrez, Gross, Willian, Albrighton and Lingard in my midfield of mediocrity

Lukaku out for Ayew - bring in Eriksen and Sterling in Mid for wek 37, then Eriksen to Salah for 38 - job done.

I’m holding everything this week as my gw32 wc team has good fixtures, and it allows me to assess the situation with Bailly. It appears as though illness curtailed his dgw so I’m hopeful of a return to the side and one less transfer to make.

Top of my watchlist is Cresswell, he’s a crossing machine, they’re quality, and big Andy is around

Brining in Smalling for Bailly (disaster buy).

I wouldn’t advise that. As a Smalling owner I’m worried about his minutes with FA Cup in mind and Top 4 already cemented.

I know he has played every game from GW23, but Jones, Bailly and Lindelöf are all fit and Jose will rotate to find the best pairing.

Ta, struggling to see who to buy to play every game from here. (Have max Spurs). Might punt on Laporte.

Does Mourinho ever sub on CBs late on? I ask, as I can afford to play him this week, as I've got Tark coming off the bench if necessary.

This problem reminds me of last autumn. Someone sold Davies because he had been rotated. Bought Trippier just to see Aurier and Davies play next match. Selling Bailly now is very likely to be similar move. The fact that Smalling has started every game may mean also that he will be rested soon. Why wouldn't he be?!?

I’d avoid United altogether. I’m having to stick with Smalling as I can’t afford to take the hit to get him out. His 3 recent goals make me comfortable with this decision and I’d not be too annoyed if he’s rested given the fact he’s overdelivered lately.

I'm keeping Alonso for DGW37 and GW38 fixtures, with Cedric coming off then bench this GW. I have Morgan but I was planning to bench him for the remaining 3 GW's even if he was nailed.

DW36 D DDG, Vert, Lowton, Cedric (Morgan, Alonso)
GW37 D DDG, Alonso, Vert, Lowton, Cedric (Morgan) in a 4-4-2

Vert Alonso chilwell lowton Morgan at the mo.

My defence is a mess. Brought Otamendi in for a hit last week, but it's looking like he was a useless buy. Might have to move him on to Davies. I have Robertson who isn't looking like playing either. Mustafi who is utter rubbish. Lowton with no DGW. And Simpson's solid 1 point a match. I was trying to be clever with wc32 and now this is no longer fun. I paid .1 for captain Morgan over Chilwell (nailedness), kept Robertson thinking City to beat Liverpool, have also banned Alonso and injured Fernandez (che).

      My defence looks like this:

Valencia, Alonso, Robertson, Morgan, Fernandez (Lloris)
(Sterling, Son, Willian, Kenedy, Cork )
      (Kane, Kaku,Vardy)

Worst case scenario is only Valencia starting this week. BB37 strategy going not as planned. I thank you for help in advance.

      Defence this GW:
      Cedric, Lowton, Long (Morgan, Alonso*)

Next GW, I might do: Morgan > VdH, so it’ll look like this:
      Alonso, Cedric, VdH (Lowton, Longn)

Have no plans for GW38 yet.

I like to put my attacking players first on the bench. If a defender doesn't play you still get the defender coming in anyway (unless you have 4 at the back of course)

But when you’re defender (Tomkins) is the better option than the attacker (Jayew) then you should put the defender first.

Basically because Ribery couldn’t finish his dinner and Madrid weren’t really threatened otherwise.

Modric also gave Bayern absolutely no time to breathe. What a player, defensively and going forward.

This. Ribery had multiple golden opportunities, and there were a few others by non-Ribery players, too. Bayern also made two critical mistakes defensively, for which RM took advantage. Bayern, with many injuries, still managed to carve up RM on the attack, yet just could not finish (except for Kimmich, which was partially Navas overplaying the pass).

    How does this plan sound?

    This week:
    Alonso >> Cedric/VdH
    Willian >> Sterlling (-4)

    Next week:
    Mahrez >> Mili/Iwobi
    Barnes >> Jesus (-4)

    For GW38
    Sanchez >> Salah

      • 7 Years

Not sure on Cedric/VDH, depends on the rest of your DEF.

Not sure on Mili/Iwobi either, no DGW for Palace and Iwobi's not exactly taking the world by storm.

Could you do Mahrez to King (to use as bench fodder) to free up funds instead? Barnes to Jesus sounds like you'll play 3 up front anyway so King probably won't be played.

Thank God for that. West Ham fans can now briefly dream of Butland signing once Stoke are relegated only to be fobbed off by a 3rd tier Slovak keeper who once played for Bayern's youth team.

He'll be introduced by a chairman who uses either the phrase 'next level' or 'exciting times'.
