$10,000 prizes with Draft Kings’ World Cup games

A busy Friday of tournament coverage continues with a look at the DraftKings game for Russia 2018.

DraftKings is running a free contest for the tournament this weekend with $10,000 in prizes (the top prize is $500).

Having partnered with DraftKings for other league campaigns, many of our readers will be more than familiar with their set-up.

We’re excited for the contest, but an FYI: we receive a commission from DraftKings, but are not employees of DraftKings and don’t have any access to non-public info. These are just our personal thoughts on the matchups.

For those new to the game, though, here’s a quick rundown on the rules.

Building a squad
DraftKings managers are handed a budget of $50,000 to construct an eight-man line-up for their selected contest.

This must comprise of one goalkeeper, two defenders, two midfielders and a pair of forwards.

However, the final “Utility” slot can be handed to any outfield player.

This allows a greater degree of flexibility to our formations, with managers having the chance to play 3-2-2, 2-3-2 or even 2-3-3, providing, of course, the total cost remains within your budget.

Scoring Points
Scoring in DraftKings is perfectly suited to members of Fantasy Football Scout in need for a summer tournament.
As mentioned in previous articles, members who have joined up already for the 2018/19 season have access to the qualifying rounds for Europe and South America and for international friendlies involving the participating nations, as well as the data for the tournament itself.

Aside from the obvious goals, assists and clean sheets, among the on-pitch actions included are shots on goal, crosses, fouls won, successful tackles and interceptions.
Here’s a summary of the new DraftKings scoring matrix:

  • Goal = +10 PTs
  • Assist = +6 PTs
  • Shot = +1 PTs
  • Shot on Goal = +1 PTs
  • Crosses = +0.75 PTs (via corner kick, open play, and set pieces)
  • Fouls Drawn = +1 PTs
  • Fouls Conceded = -0.5 PTs
  • Tackle Won = +1 PTs
  • Pass Intercepted (D,M,F) = +0.5 PTs
  • Yellow Card = -1.5 PTs
  • Red Card = -3 PTs
  • Penalty Kick Miss = -5 PTs
  • Saves (GK) = +2 PTs
  • Goal Conceded (GK) = -2 PTs
  • Clean Sheet (GK) = +5 PTs
  • Clean Sheet (D) = +3 PTs
  • Win (GK) = +5 PTs
  • Penalty Kick Save (GK) = +3 PTs

As you can see, keepers earn more points for shutouts than defenders (five to three) and are the only players rewarded when their team emerges victorious, claiming an extra five points.

On the downside, through, goalkeepers are deducted two points for every goal conceded.
DraftKings will be running contests all the way through Russia 2018, with a trio of matches later today offering plenty for Fantasy managers to consider.

With that in mind, here’s our standout options for each of those kick-offs.

Uruguay vs Egypt, 1pm

Coming in at $10,000, Luis Suarez is the priciest player in Friday’s early fixture for good reason.
The Barcelona frontman played a part in more goals (13) in qualifying that any team-mate, scoring five times and supplying eight assists.

Uruguay’s number one for spot-kicks, Suarez placed first and second respectively for shots and key passes on the way to Russia.
His domestic form remained relentless, too, with 25 goals and 12 assists in 33 La Liga appearances this term.

With a goal and assist in last week’s 3-0 win over Uzbekistan, Suarez looks worth the outlay against an Egypt defence that’s managed just two clean sheets in their last 12 matches.

Morocco vs Iran, 4pm

With showdowns against Spain and Portugal to follow, both Morocco and Iran will be looking for a vital three points in the second of today’s matches.

Like Suarez, Hakim Ziyech ($8,700) arrives on the back of an outstanding domestic campaign.
The Morocco midfielder bagged nine goals and 15 assists in 34 league fixtures for Ajax in 2017/18 and his underlying numbers are even more impressive.

Ziyech averaged 18.4 minutes per shot and 21.4 minutes per key pass for the Dutch side.
Supplying two goals and as many assists in five qualifying fixtures, the playmaker is their main man for set-pieces, boosting his prospects of points for crossing in the Draft Kings game.

Ziyech is also expected to be Morocco’s number one penalty-taker, after scoring from the spot in a 2-1 win over Serbia back in March.

Morocco look the likeliest to emerge victorious in the battle of the Group B underdogs – they have won four of their five friendlies in 2018, beating the likes of Serbia and Slovakia and drawing against Ukraine.

Spain vs Portugal, 7pm

This evening’s match was a difficult one to call even before Spain’s change of manager on Wednesday morning.

Given that Cristiano Ronaldo sets you back $11,500 and Isco comes in at $9,200, a price of $7,400 for David Silva looks more than reasonable.

No player produced more goals (five) or assists (four) for Spain than the Man City playmaker, who is listed as a midfielder in DraftKings for the clash with Portugal.

With a big share of set-pieces also boosting his appeal, Silva created more chances and supplied more crosses than any team-mate on the way to Russia 2018.

Having also supplied two goals and a pair of assists over the recent friendlies, he looks strong value for money on DraftKings.

Fantasy Football Scout promotes DraftKings but we are also avid fans and users, and may sometimes play on our personal account in the games that we offer advice on. Although we have expressed our personal views on the games and strategies above, they do not necessarily reflect the view(s) of DraftKings and we may also deploy different players and strategies than what we recommend above. We are not employees of DraftKings and do not have access to any non-public information.

Hah sorry, but I'm biased as my team is loaded with Uruguay players for these first two games.

Egypt could definitely get out of their group, just hope they haven't rushed Salah back too quickly. Would play super defensive and go for a draw with Uruguay and then have a fit Salah v Russia and Saudi to try and go for it. But best of luck- I've put $5 on them to win the world cup!

I know. It's a shame that things never really changed after the Arab Spring. The initial signs were very promising.

Hypothetically speaking, is he popular enough to win a free vote?

    Next seasons Premiership rotation pairs looks to be as follows;

    Arsenal & Spurs
    Bournemouth & Palace
    Fulham & Chelsea
    Huddersfield & Burnley
    Liverpool & Everton
    Man City & Man United
    Newcastle & Brighton
    Southampton & West Ham
    Watford & Cardiff
    Wolves & Leicester

      Nice thanks for posting this.

Newcastle Brighton could be a good one after Newcastle's awful start.

Normally I don't want to rotation with a 5.0m defender so that probably knocks SOU/WHM out of it. Maybe BUR too?

For me rotation is about long term planning so I like a rotation pair that I don't have to think about, then one big hitter.

          6.5m + 4.5m + 4.5m.

Then I add in a 5.0m defender who I'll switch out according to fixtures, and a 4.5m/4.0m who is my fifth option.

          6.5m, 5m, 4.5m, 4.5m, 4.5m. Done.

Yeah, shame Newcastle and Brighton both look to have pretty tough starts and reckon Burnley are all £5m next season. I’m thinking Southampton and West Ham could be a decent £9m pairing for goalkeepers though, depending on who West Ham were to bring in or if they stick with Adrian.

Owned Ryan and Dubravka last season for a long period, both actually did well against top sides if i remember correctly. This will be my goalkeeper pairing from the start i think.

I expect very few managers will wildcard later than the third international break, before GW13, with plenty likely to be played over the first two, in GW5 and GW9, so it's not realistic to plan rotations for any longer than that. That said, focusing on the pairings that are likelier to have cheaper defensive options:

The Bournemouth/Palace combination looks decent, if you trust Eddie Howe, going 10 GWs without having to face a top six side: CAR/whu/EVE/SOU/LEI/NEW/CRY/WOL/SOU/ful

Leicester/Wolves isn't too bad, either, making it to GW18 before you have to choose between LIV and che: EVE/WOL/sou/whu/BUR/HUD/SOU/EVE/WAT/WHU/car/BUR/HUD/wat/FUL/new/BOU

Newcastle play a top six team in each of their first 3 home games, and Brighton in 2 out of 3, so I wouldn't go there for the start of the season, but they have a nice run together from GW7 until Christmas: LEI/WHU/BHA/WOL/WAT/BOU/LEI/WHU/CRY/WOL/hud/FUL

Burnley have a decent run of fixtures until the second international break, and I wouldn't be in a hurry to bench one of their players away from home for a Huddersfield defender - Pope or Heaton should be a good option to play every week.

Southampton/West Ham gets off to a bright start of home fixtures, with BUR/BOU/LEI/WOL/BHA, before rapidly going downhill, with a run of CHE/MUN/CHE/TOT. One to last until an early wildcard, maybe.

Similarly, Cardiff/Watford both have a reasonable first 3 fixtures, giving a rotation of BHA/NEW/CRY, before both teams face top six opposition in GW4 and GW5.

In all likelihood, though, a huge number of people will wildcard in the first international break in GW5. Notably, Liverpool start the season with WHU/cry/BHA/lei, before facing tot/SOU/che/MCI after the break.

With that in mind, Bournemouth, Fulham, Southampton and Watford have playable home fixtures in GW1 and GW3, and could be effectively paired with West Ham or Everton (who are unlikely to have an option at 4.5m), as they have decent home fixtures in GW2 and GW4.

While McDonald's is great for the masses, Telegraph is perfect for the elite manager.

26 transfers in the group stages.

At least a dozen strategies on how to use them.

See the line ups before making transfers. Unlimited picks from any given team.

Would love to see how someone like Ragabolly would play it.

    McDonalds game:

This has probably been covered BUT...
My captain is currently Lukaku. Can I change it to Cavani now then if Cavani scores 1pt (doubles to 2), can I put it back on Lukaku which means Cavani will be on 1pt and I have the chance of picking up double for Lukaku????? (Unless Cavani scores big)

Effectively changing captain before each game till I decide to stick of hopefully a good scoring player.

Is it Sergio Ramos or David Silva who takes the penalties for Spain?

      https://www.besoccer.com/new/lopetegui-selects-spain-s-world-cup-penalty-taker-437030

Found this on google. Ramos took two penalties in a friendly but Silva wasn't on the pitch. Hmm

Best 4.5 options in defense already got Valera. Has Pavard gone off the radar? seemed to be very popular but died off

    Dumb question alert.

I have Uzohu and Gallese as my keepers who play on the same day. If i start Gallese can I then swap him out for Uzohu afterwards? or can you only swap in players who are yet to play?

Apparently you can only change before the first game of the day. Shouldn't have picked keepers playing on the same day.

I'm going round in circles on the Draft Kings website between log in screen and account screen. About to give up. Just something you might want to pass on to your DK partners. No good giving a great write up if users can't then play!

Apologies for asking this early - but has anyone got an Excel compatible fixtures list for next season? I am really only looking for Arsenal fixtures as I need to arrange my season ticket syndicate...

    Cheers!

Hey Jarv. I notice I missed question 10 in the yes/no competition. Would it be possible to add a "no" answer in there or would that be too contentious? Cheers

I have a query on this, do we select a captain each day ? Like we select one today and his score doubles then one tomorrow and so on or is it that we select one captain and once he plays that's done and we cannot change the captain till next round ?

A bit odd question but I was not sure of the rule from the website.

      1. Nani R U OK? R U OK ? R U O…

You can only change your captain to someone who hasn’t played as yet. Your previous captain loses double points once this is done.

So, say if I am putting Godin as captain today then I can change say Cueva tomorrow ?

I have kept Lewandowski as captain at the moment..

Cheers Bear. De Arrascaeta starts. Now gotta choose whether to captain him or Godin

Any time. Yeah, everyone starts for them from a fantasy perspective.

Tough one, I've never seen De Arrascaeta play so I don't know how big his ceiling is. I'd probably personally go with Godin and hope for a clean sheet and goal (would that be enough to tempt you to stick?).

        1. Deulofail
          • 8 Years
          5 years, 10 months ago

It would, but simply one CS or one goal would not be. De arrastaeta is probably more liekly to score higher than 12 and more likely to blank as well. With some good captain options to come, I'm thinking De Arrasaeta might be wortht the punt, but in a normal FPL situation, I'd definitely go Godin
