Sweden v South Korea: Budget punts and bench fodder

After the rip-roaring spectacle of Germany v Mexico yesterday afternoon, Group E’s other two teams – Sweden and South Korea – get their World Cup campaigns underway at 1pm in Nizhny Novgorod.

The match is likely to be of minimal interest to Fantasy managers, with no player on show owned by more than 3% of McDonald’s FIFA managers.

The omens aren’t particularly strong for a free-flowing exhibition of football or indeed a Fantasy points bonanza, though the fixture is surely now a must-win for both sides given Mexico’s shock victory yesterday.

Sweden haven’t won a FIFA-sanctioned match since their play-off first-leg victory over Italy last November and have scored on only two occasions in their subsequent seven fixtures.

South Korea have won only one of their last six friendly internationals, losing all three of their most recent meetings with European opposition. No Korean player scored on more than two occasions or registered over two assists in their ten AFC third round World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Despite us previously championing the causes of penalty-taking centre-back Andreas Granqvist (£5.0m) and creative full-backs Mikael Lustig (£5.5m) and Ludwig Augustinsson (£5.0m), it was Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof (£5.0m) who Fantasy managers gambled on: the Swedish centre-half is owned by 3% of those playing McDonald’s FIFA but is only among the substitutes this afternoon.

The Swedes kept clean sheets in both of their June friendlies.

Midfielder Emil Forsberg (£7.5m), who scored on four occasions, supplied three assists and had more shots on goal than any other Swedish player in qualification, is the only other main Fantasy draw in Janne Andersson’s side. Marcus Berg (£8.0m), the scorer of eight goals in World Cup qualifying, has been largely overlooked by Fantasy managers.

All Korean players owned by 1% or more of McDonald’s FIFA managers are £4.0m-rated goalkeeper and defenders: only one of them – Park Joo-ho – starts today in Russia.

Flick of a coin between Costa and Lukaku for me in round 2.
Depending on how it goes today, Kane against Panama could also be 'essential'.

I am very happy with RTEs coverage here in Ireland but i must start tuning in to ITV when they are on in that case.

I quite like Bilic and his idiosyncrasy's too, that sounds like a good match up.

There is a great GIF online of Bilic spreading his arms out and making contact with Keane...you can just see Keane holding back the urge to kill him.

ITV have Gray Neville, who is very good with tactical analysis, and Ian Wright as the voice of the people.

BBC, I only really like Rio, and Alex Scott I have been impressed with.

Ronaldo favours fantasy football as the Portugal team is set up entirely to suit him, whereas Argentina have a wealth of attacking talent to share the points.

OR 1 in McD's game currently on 93 pts, with BB active and 28pts on his bench...reality is though, that the two Russian 13 pointer's would have been in his starting 11 if playing without BB, and the 2x 1 pointers in his stating 11 subbed out.

    BB value = 4 pts
    What's the point?!

    1. Legomané
      • Has Moderation Rights
      • 6 Years
      5 years, 10 months ago

The way I see it, is because of the ability to tactically sub in and out players, the only realistic way to get a genuine boost from your bench is to have a double return from your GK. The odds of you getting 11 or more returns from your 13 outfield players are minuscule.

      1. Deulofail
        • 8 Years
        5 years, 10 months ago

This too. See, it's not useless! WC a team with two good GKs and activate BB 🙂

    2. Deulofail
      • 8 Years
      5 years, 10 months ago

Yeah it's value is pretty low, but it still has value. I think you can increase the value, of course, in a week wher eyou have a strong bench. But more subtly, prehaps if you have players towards the end of the round that you're less confident in, so a BB would stop you swapping 2-3 point scores for 0-1 point scores.

    3. Pras (FPL)
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Yea but Croatia are decent so a haul is not a given and I intent to wild card for Round 3 anyways. Depending on how good panama and tunisia are makes sense to look at Kane/ Lukaku/ Hazard.

Confirmed: you can wildcard then use your bench boost immediately.

If folk are playing their wildcards, who are your targets? Which big-hitters that blanked in Round 1 are you keeping, and who are you ditching? Who is essential to bring in?

I'm ditching Kimmich and Varane from the back (Alba and Rodriguez in), and bringing in Isco for J-Rod. Front line remains the same, so keeping Neymar and Cavanni.

    Sommer - Schmeichal
    Alba - Godin - Rodriguez - Muenier - Miranda
    Isco - Nandez - Galinsky - Meza - Cueva
    Neymar - Cavanni - Lukaku

Should be a full XV of starters, with possible captain rotation of Gazinksy, Cavanni/Alba, Meza, Neymar, Lukaku.
