Scout Notes

World Cup is over for much-owned Brazil and Uruguay Fantasy assets

And then there were six. A European nation is guaranteed to win the World Cup this summer after South America’s final two challengers, Uruguay and Brazil, were despatched by France and Belgium in Friday’s quarter-final ties.

The bad news for Fantasy managers who own one or several of Philippe Coutinho, Neymar, Marcelo, Thiago Silva, Diego Godin, Fernando Muslera and Jose Gimenez – and there are many who do – is that their assets’ races are now run.

Coutinho was the most-owned player in the game ahead of Friday’s fixtures, while Godin and Marcelo both had ownerships of over 30%.

There is, at least, the consolation for those playing McDonald’s FIFA of being allotted five free transfers before the semi-final deadline next Tuesday evening. That is an increase of two transactions from the quarter-final limit and will in many cases be much needed to overhaul Fantasy squads that contain an abundance of players from eliminated sides.

We’ve got all the goals, assists, clean sheets and Fantasy talking points from Friday’s two quarter-final matches.

Uruguay 0-2 France

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Raphael Varane (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Antoine Griezmann (£10m) – 9 points
  • Hugo Lloris (£5.9m) – 7 points
  • Corentin Tolisso (£7.3m) – 6 points
  • Samuel Umtiti (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Benjamin Pavard (£4.5m) – 6 points
  • Lucas Hernandez (£5.0m) – 5 points

After Kylian Mbappe (£9.1m) hogged the limelight in the 4-3 win over Argentina, it was Antoine Griezmann‘s (£10m) turn to demonstrate his worth to the French national side – and Fantasy managers – with a starring role in the quarter-final win over Uruguay.

The Atletico Madrid forward’s teasing free-kick delivery was flicked in by centre-back Raphael Varane (£6.0m) for France’s opening goal and, while Fernando Muslera (£5.8m) could do little about that header, the Uruguayan goalkeeper was culpable for Les Bleus’ second.

Receiving the ball from Corentin Tolisso (£7.3m) around 25 yards from goal, Griezmann struck a speculative shot that Muslera could only palm up and into his own goal, Packie Bonner-style.

Mbappe, the most-bought Fantasy player ahead of the quarter-final deadline, ended the match with one point after picking up a yellow card.

Hugo Lloris‘ (£5.9m) superb save from a Martin Caceres (£5.8m) header was the closest that Uruguay came to a goal, as the 2010 semi-finalists struggled without injured striker Edinson Cavani (£9.6m).

Uruguay XI (4-4-2): Muslera; Caceres, Gimenez, Godin, Laxalt; Nandez, (Urretaviscaya 73′) Torreira, Vecino, Bentancur (Rodriguez 59′); Suarez, Stuani (Gomez 59′)

France XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Umtiti, Hernandez; Pogba, Kante, Tolisso (N’Zonzi 80′); Mbappe (Dembele 88′), Griezmann (Fekir 93′), Giroud

Brazil 1-2 Belgium

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS

  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 7 points
  • Renato Augusto (£7.2m) – 6 points
  • Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) – 5 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 5 points
  • Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m) – 5 points

Having almost failed to get past Japan in the last 16, Belgium produced a fine counter-attacking performance to eliminate Brazil and reach the World Cup semi-finals for the first time in 32 years.

Two first-half goals did for the Selecao. Nacer Chadli‘s (£6.9m) inswinging corner was flicked past his own goalkeeper by Fernandinho (£6.2m) for Belgium’s opener before Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) finished off a swift breakaway to double his country’s lead. The excellent Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) picked up a deserved assist for De Bruyne’s strike, which was reminiscent of the Manchester City midfielder’s arrowed effort in the 5-0 win over Swansea City in April.

Substitute Renato Augusto (£7.2m) nodded home a chipped cross from Philippe Coutinho (£9.2m) to halve the deficit, but a sustained period of late Brazilian pressure came to no avail.

Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) collected three extra points for his nine saves made, one of which was a fine injury-time stop from Neymar (£12.1m). The Brazil forward cut a frustrated figure all evening as he was thwarted by Courtois and denied a penalty claim by referee Milorad Mazic.

Thiago Silva (£6.2m) should have scored from a Neymar corner when the match was still goalless, but could only turn the ball onto Courtois’ post from point-blank range.

Brazil XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Fagner, Silva, Miranda, Marcelo; Paulinho (Augusto 73′), Fernandinho, Coutinho; Willian (Firmino 45′), Jesus (Costa 58′), Neymar

Belgium XI (3-4-3): Courtois; Alderweireld, Kompany, Vertonghen; Meunier, Fellaini, Witsel, Chadli (Vermaelen 83′); De Bruyne, Hazard, Lukaku (Tielemans 87′)

Who do you prefer in semis ?

    A) Pogba (Belgium)

    B) Lingard (Croatia)

    (assuming england goes through.)

doesn't make a difference. Its basically Pogba 4.4 vs Lingard 5.7

assuming england and croatia go through there are no midfield starters below 5.7m from any teams playing in semis

    @Geoff

It would really help to have a "Minimum Cost" drop down menu option to go along with Max Cost in the members stats tables, please?

This way you can isolate price brackets in your stats, such as premium strikers (i.e. min cost £9m, max cost £12.5m).

After playing your Free Hit chip, at the next deadline your bank balance and squad is restored to as they were at the previous deadline, with any player price changes in the previous gameweek reflected.

Does this mean that any player price increases when FH is active will be deducted from your bank balance at the next GW deadline ? If so what happens if your BB was 0.0m when FH was activated ?

    1. Epic Fail
      • Fantasy Football Scout Member

Nothing. You just get your normal price increases/decreases as you would have normally.

It's just like a week has passed and you haven't made any transfers.

So you would get your original players back at there latest price (even if it's higher than when FH was actived), without any deductions for MITB ?

    A)
    Fabianski
    Robertson - Mendy - Ward
    Salah - Sane - Silva - L.Cook
    Aubameyang - Zaha - Wood

    4.0 - Cedric - Masuaku - 4.0

    B)
    Fabianski
    Robertson - Mendy - Ward
    Salah - Sane - Eriksen - Mhki - Masuaku
    Aubameyang - Zaha

    4.0 - Cedric - Quaner - 4.0

The second one has only 1 playing sub and Masuaku playing ever game. So A. That being said, Id try to balance the team more with redistribution of funds.

Wood, Cook, 4.0-> Jimenez, Cairney, 4.5 is a decent start.

Thanks. I was thinking more around rotating Cedric and Masuaku (442 352).

I need to find 0.5 to make this work though, I'm not comfortable with having 2 non-players.

Jimenez at 5.5 is a decent pick if it looks like he'll be the starting fwd for Wolves. Otherwise Robertson -> Arnold (if he nails down the place) or Ward -> 4.5 (EL football) are good bets if you dont want to downgrade midfield.

Quite like this set up till Deulofeu & 7m strikers bottle it for me.

    McCarthy
    VVD • Bailly • Cedric
    Salah • Mane • Silva • Deulo
    Auba • Zaha • Tosun

    (Fab / Tomkins / 4.5eve / Stephens)

Could opt for Firmino & Palace/Everton mid over Mane & Tuson/Zaha but pre season will tell which is the better option.

Yup if Deulo puts in half a decent pre season and gets regular mins he’s worth the punt imo. 5.5 for an attacking player with good fixtures and should be on some set pieces.

Yeah even I’m not sure about Zaha but if he’s starting upfront consistently throughout pre season he could be worth a punt. Personally as a United fan I think Bailly will start the season for us as first choice.

Just want England to put in a good defensive performance today. Not like against Iceland - let's not get done by long throws, set pieces and counter-attacks. If Sweden score a good goal then fair play, but let's not hand it to them with poor defending. They are probably going to park the bus so let's not play into their hands.

  20. Puyol Pants Up

Well this is how I'm lining up so far:

    Karius, 4.0
    Walker, Coleman, Cedric, 4.5, 4.0
    Sanchez, Silva, Eriksen, Delofeu, Stephens
    Aguero, Firmino, Zaha

    Feel alright with this.

    1. Karan14
      • 7 Years

Looks good. But not sure about spending 5.5 on eve defence as they are likely to offer us a 4.5m option too. Walker also might not be available for start of the season.

Fair, I'll probably reshape my defence. I do want a city defender in though so I might stick with Walker (Plan to bench him GW 1 anyways)

Will probably replace Coleman with Bailly/Jones and get in a 4.5 EVE defender as my 4th defender slot.

Yup City def looks like a good option but there could be some rotation nthere. That’s why I’m on Bailly & VVD right but could shift one of them for a City def if anyone looks nailed (Laporte & Mendy on my watchlist).

Why are we talking so much about our fpl team at this point of summer when we know we know nothing about teams squad as many of them have new players and managers, and we are going to change our teams thousands times and our current teams is nowhere near final one?

Speculation is fun, also good to see what other's first thoughts are. It's this part of the year when you might get the widest range of opinions

2 out of Fabianski & McCarthy front runners for me. Watford & Palace keepers could be a decent option too.

Karius + 4.0 for me looks decent

I don't know why people still try and rotate 4.5 GKs, I don't ever remember it working well at the start of the season.

Nach monreal to real sociedad deal may be done in coming weeks
That would leave kolasinac as arsenal's only LB

Don't really think you can go wrong with either.

Currently on Aguero, but might switch back to Auba

Auba probably more nailed and long term pick but Aguero could do equally well. I’m covering City with Dilva most likely as KDB will be on a extended holiday.

Hey Ian! Hope you’ve been doing well. Just passing time with World Cup Fantasy.
Yup I have made a draft and I think I’m quite settled on it till pre season throws my plans in the dustbin.

          McCarthy
          VVD • Bailly • Cedric
          Salah • Mane • Silva • Deulo
          Auba • Zaha • Tosun

          (Fab / Tomkins / 4.5eve / Stephens)

Like it. I also mentioned Bailly on here a few days ago and got shot down. Jose likes his rested players - fully expect smalling and Bailly to start the season together - Before Bailly's injury last season he was first choice and bargain at 6.0 - so at 5.5 he seems ridiculously cheap way into the UTD defence

Yup Bailly & Smalling look favourites to start the season imo too.

Yup have considered Sane over Mane would like to seek how pre season goes for both.

also, maybe Sane over Mane - doubling up on man city value mids with Silva could be a nice way to cover city.

Very nice team Karan. How about Eriksen instead of Mane?

Eriksen is a good option but most the Spurs first 11 are still at the World Cup and they have a few extra games away from home to start with. Want to double up on City/Pool attack with Sane or Mane as I they’ll score the most goals and have the best fixtures.
Will get Spurs when they start playing in their new stadium.

for a team with salah, KDB, Kane and Aubu - its ok, but you can see where the compromises have been made.

For me, KDB --> Silva and McArthur --> Walcott for more flexibility
