Meunier is Fantasy top scorer as Belgium beat England to World Cup bronze

Belgium’s World Cup Fantasy options rewarded their owners with a parting gift in their last match of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Those invested in England were left disappointed though, as they were unable to register any returns.

We’ve got all the goals and assists and Fantasy talking points from the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND

TOP-SCORING PLAYERS:

  • Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) – 12 points
  • Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m) – 7 points
  • Eden Hazard (£10.1m) – 6 points
  • Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m) – 6 points
  • Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) – 6 points
  • Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) – 6 points
  • Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) – 5 points
  • Nacer Chadli (£6.9m) – 4 points

Thomas Meunier (£6.0m) was the top-scorer as Belgium beat England in the World Cup third/fourth place play-off.

The wing-back finally rewarded his 10.7 percent ownership with his first and final goal of the tournament, after showing promise both in qualifying and the earlier stages in Russia.

He even had a chance to add another strike in the second-half as his drive from the right was saved spectacularly by Jordan Pickford (£5.5m).

On top of his fourth-minute goal, assisted by Nacer Chadli (£6.9m), Meunier kept the clean sheet too. His defensive colleagues, Thibaut Courtois (£6.0m), Jan Vertonghen (£5.9m), Vincent Kompany (£5.7m) and Toby Alderweireld (£5.8m) also banked points for the shut-out.

England came into the tie a little more in the second-half with Harry Kane (£11.2m), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (£5.7m) and Eric Dier (£5.7m) the most dangerous.

Owners of Romelu Lukaku (£10.0m) were initially disappointed by his withdrawal in the 59th minute but he was eventually awarded two points for playing 60th minutes by McDonald’s FIFA World Cup Fantasy.

Belgium finally put the game beyond England late in the second-half, catching them on the break. Kevin De Bruyne (£9.8m) was allowed too much space to thread Eden Hazard (£10.1m) through to slot home.

BELGIUM XI (3-4-2-1): Courtois; Vertonghen, Kompany, Alderweireld; Chadli (Vermaelen 39’), Witsel, Tielemans (Dembele 78’), Meunier; Hazard, De Bruyne; Lukaku (Mertens 60’).

ENGLAND XI (3-1-4-2): Pickford; Maguire, Stones, Jones; Dier; Rose (Lingard 45’), Delph, Loftus-Cheek (Alli 84’), Trippier; Sterling (Rashford 45’), Kane.

Should Everton have been playing that Austrian side at all? I presume they are the equivalent of a Sunday league team, may suggest a very haphazardly planned preseason

No, the linesman had his flag up so the keeper did not attempt to save it, but for some reason the goal stood.

😛 Honestly, he'll only become a decent option in my book if we make some decent signings up front. We have Sess, but lack a first choice striker and RF/RW. He'll take some corners, but he isn't first choice set piece taker, and our first choice pen taker has now left, so if he's lucky he might end up on them.

For the time being I wouldn't be picking him, but he definitely has the potential to become a good option at 5.0mil at some point in the season if he can get into his rhythm.

Tom has just signed a contract so I think he will be on pens. He has a knack for having shots just outside of the box as well so could score a few and plays some great through balls to the front 3. Cairney is cheap imo. By the way great grav

lol thanks, I just hope Seri is saving his smiling for the pitch 😀

Yeah Cairney has been undervalued by .5 probably, but I guess his injury hit season last year hampered his progress. If he can get back to best of seasons ago, can definitely see a 5-7 goals season with 9-12 assists

remember he was manager of chelsea 4 years ago, and 3 of his 4 players above featured.

not saying he'll do the same this year, but just useful to look at history sometimes.

So only 6 out of 17 actually started GW1.

With over a week less break this time, most semi-finalists are unlikely to start before GW3, if then, and most quarter-finalists will probably not start in GW1 either.

Probably best to avoid them all. I suspect that early wildcards in the first international break may be popular, but perhaps better to wait a little longer and just bring a few of them in with free transfers.

Going by security of starts and all that, City are a lottery. For the same reason I'd pick Robbo over TAA.

I'd also pick Auba over Lacazette, I expect the former to score more.

    Thoughts on her?

    Ward

    Robertson, Smalling, Mee

    Salah, Mkhitaryan, Gundogan, Mahrez, Jota

    Aubameyang, Vardy

    Bench: Fabianski, Tomkins, Kamara, Schelotto

Think Vardy will start GW1 and Leicester rely heavily on his goals so could be a decent pick.

      Way too many un-nailed players

Smalling...will he be a nailed CB with Bailly, Lindelof, Jones, Rojo around and Maureen sniffing around Maguire and Toby?

Gundogan...not a chance he plays in the 1st choice City midfield beyond GW1-2 once the World cuppers are all back

Same with Mahrez...he's competing with Sane, Sterling, DSilva, BSilva, KDB etc. etc. He's OK for a few GWs...beyond that, nah

Vardy? Mahrez gone...will he get any service?

        Thanks Catty.

I have Coleman right now, I've kept 0.5 ITB with the intention of switching to Smalling or Mendy a week prior to the kick offs.

Think Gundogan will get atleast the first couple of games which is why I've gone for him. Plus, he's just 5.5m - can't go much wrong at that price. Will switch out once KDB is back.

Mahrez? They must've broken the club's transfer record for a reason. Which is surely not using him as a bit part player.

Vardy? With Mahrez gone, it's simply him who is expected to deliver the goods. If Leicester score, he should be involved.

I don't think price matters at City 🙂

50m for Stones to be benched a lot, Mendy and Danilo were 50m a pop too but barely played (albeit injury in Mendy's case). BSilva was an expensive bit-part player too?

Don't see good things for Leicester with Vahrez broken up. Doubt Albrighton, Amartey and co will hit the same levels

            Thanks for your thoughts again.

I agree with the Vardy situation but I'm just a bit too stubborn to I'm just a bit too stubborn to drop him.

Wouldn't be too keen on using 2 of 3 slots up in an attacking team - quite happy with Coleman and Tosun, and their midfield could also provide value.

I'd only have 2 keepers from the same team if they are defensive and don't have that many interesting players elsewhere. Many here mention Tosun, Siggy, Walcott, Coleman, maybe Baines... so I reckon it's a terrible decision.

I'm not sure how the City midfield lottery is going. I'm not sold on Zaha as it seems like he'd be playing on the wing, nor on Arnie, Wham's early fixtures are scary.

Soroloth could be decent. Expect him to play up top in his natural position hopefully putting Zaha onto the wing.

      Daniels is rubbish

The rest I like but TAA won't be ready and martial if he has any sence will go somewhere who will get the best out of him
