The World Cup takes a break on Friday for the first time in over a fortnight, with the round of 16 commencing on Saturday afternoon.

The lull in action is a welcome respite for Fantasy managers as serious thought can be given to what is effectively a compulsory wildcard, with both McDonald’s FIFA and Fantasy iTeam offering unlimited transfers between the culmination of the group stage and the start of the knockout rounds.

Although the round of 16 fixtures will be the prime concern, Fantasy managers ought to take the quarter-finals into consideration given that only three free transfers are permitted (any more will cost points/credits) before they begin.

Up to four players can be selected from one country in both Fantasy games at the last 16 stage, though some Fantasy bosses may wish to spread their selections across several nations given the restrictions on transfers before the quarter-finals begin.

Fantasy managers will have already noticed the price rises – and drops – in both our featured World Cup games, though in McDonald’s FIFA at least the allotted budget increases from £100m to £105m for these knockout rounds.

Players such as Cristiano Ronaldo (£12.1m), Harry Kane (£11.1m), Diego Costa (£9.1m), Christian Eriksen (£9.1m), Philippe Coutinho (£9.1m), Denis Cheryshev (£5.7m), Andreas Granqvist (£5.1m), Diego Godin (£5.6m) and Fernando Muslera (£5.6m) have all increased in price in McDonald’s FIFA, though no player has risen more than £0.2m.

Lionel Messi (£11.9m), Olivier Giroud (£8.9m), Willian (£8.4m), Dele Alli (£8.9m), Nicolas Otamendi (£5.9m) and Kyle Walker (£5.9m) are among the big names who have suffered a price drop, meanwhile.

Members can read on for this round-up of the Opta data from the group stages. The data itself is available to members as part of their yearly subscription and obtainable immediately after the end of each World Cup match.

Don't have Costa on my team, but I'll go with Isco since he will be playing against Russia.

I think that Croatia - Denmark will be a more balanced game.

Hi, I’m just wondering if there is anyone who would help me pick the team? Currently I got:
      GK:Pickford
      D: Trippier, Ramos, Godin

      M:Coutinho, modric, iniesta, claesson, Rodriguez

      S: griezmann, ronaldo

5/3/2 maybe should do some changes? Still got time till 3pm

      Thoughts on this BB team?

      Muslera - Courtois
      Lovren - Fagner - R. Rodriguez - Alderweireld - Granqvist
      Eriksen - Modric - Coutinho - Claesson - Inui
      Lukaku - Hazard - Costa

      Captains:
      1) Muslera vs Portugal
      2) Costa vs Russia
      3) Lukaku vs Japan
      4) R. Rodriguez vs Sweden

I would go with Meunier over Alderweireld but I think Meunier is one yellow away from a ban - perhaps he will be saved in the game against Japan otherwise he could get booked and miss the next game which will be vs Brazil/Mexico.

I would say it is a bit conflicted having players playing against eachother. Better off choosing a winner than having them take points off eachother and being stuck with a player leaving the tournament. For example if Claesson gets an assist then you will lose your clean sheet for Rodriguez so no gain. Similar story with erikson and modric. Personally I would switch Isco for Erikson and invest a bit more in defence. Just my 2 cents.

You get 3 free transfers so you can easily change your team

True, but imo opinion they should be saved for unexpected results. For example, In that team if Erikson and Rodriguez both score and Denmark and Switzerland go through then they lose clean sheet points and already have 4 players out of the tournament.

I still have my WC so that's not an issue - but I think that you make a good point about Eriksen -> Isco. I got Isco for Eriksen and Trippier for Lovren, since JRod is probably out.

        Btw, my final team is:

        GK: Courtois, Olsen

Def: T. Silva, Lovren, Carvajal, Granqvist, Pavard

Mid: Isco, Modric, Coutinho, Bentancur, Quintero

        Atk: Griezmann, Hazard, Kane

Only possible change is if Pavard won't be on France's starting 11 and I'll change: T. Silva with Miranda and Pavard with Maguire.

Hi everyone I'm toying with 3 combo options for my last 3 players and can't figure out which one to go with the budget I have. I still have my WC and I'm playing Bench boost this round. Thanks for any thoughts

        a) *my current selection*
        F- D. Costa
        M- J. Lingard
        B- T. Silva

        b) *the Rakitic move
        F- D. Costa
M- Rakitiic (I already have Modric, but is the upgrade worth the double up?)
B- Miranda (T. SIlva gets downgraded)

        c) *the Hazard move*
F- Hazard (I already have Lukaku, but is the upgrade worth the double up?)
        M- J. Lingard
B- Miranda (T. SIlva gets downgraded)

Been tinkering probably too much so would really appreciate other people's opinions!

        Please RMT

        Olsen - Sommer
        Carvajal - Trippier - Miranda - Granqvist - Lovren
        Cheryshev - Isco - Modric - Coutinho - Claesson
        Costa - Kane - Lukaku

I have my WC still available for potentially the next round and also bench boost which I was considering using this round.

        Thank you.

I would hope you're using your BB with both Olsen & Sommer and praying for a 0-0 too? Cheryshev? Nah not vs Spain...Quintero instead. Rest is gtg.

The keeper situation is hacking me off! I don't really want two in from the same game although I do think it'll be tight, at least one is then through to the next round...

Trippier > Maguire and upgrade keeper to Muslera, Subasic or even Pickford?

My thinking behind Trippier is that he seems to be taking England's corners and England look very decent from corners.

Why do most of you consider Costa -> Griezmann and Lukaku -> Hazard. Have I missed something?!

I would guess because Griez and Hazard both take penalties. Also Griez offers a day 1 captain choice.

Thoughts on Casemiro? Seems good value at 5.5 for a player sure to play and decent chance of progressing. Am I missing something as I haven't seen him included in many teams?

This final could be a recap of the group stages....own goals, VAR and penalties.
