Cork scores again as Hart keeps third successive clean sheet

Burnley progressed in the Europa League once again on Thursday night as they dispatched Istanbul Basaksehir after extra-time.

The Clarets now have a Gameweek 2 fixture against Watford on Sunday afternoon, a trend that may continue if they stay in the continental competition.

We’ve gone over the match in detail to assess the impact it should have on our Fantasy Premier League squads.

BURNLEY 1-0 ISTANBUL BASAKSEHIR

  • Goals: Jack Cork (£5.0m)
  • Assists: Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m)

Jack Cork (£5.0m) scored his second Europa League goal of the season as Burnley booked a meeting with Olympiakos in the third qualifying round of the competition. The former Swansea City man’s form on the continent this summer may start to put him on the radars of Fantasy managers, as goal-scoring £5.0m midfielders proved popular between Gameweek 1 and 2. Cork’s first strike was a header against Aberdeen while his latest goal was a beautifully struck shot from range curled into the top corner after a neat piece of skill. Manager Sean Dyche is clearly a fan of Cork, who should still be available to face Watford on Sunday having played just 38 minutes.

“Fantastic goals, both of them. Sublime goal (tonight). That’s something we maybe don’t get enough credit for because that’s a fantastic goal. If that’s a more trendy name than Jack Cork in the Premier League, it would be raved about. And he meant it.”

Cork led a group of six Burnley players who started against Southampton in Gameweek 1 to drop out of the starting line-up on Thursday night. That also included Matt Lowton (£5.0m), James Tarkowski (£5.0m), Ben Mee (£5.0m), Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£6.0m) and Chris Wood (£6.5m). Cork, Tarkowski, Gudmundsson and Wood were all used as substitutes at various stages in the match while starters Aaron Lennon (£5.0m) and Ashley Westwood (£4.5m) had their minutes managed, so all of these names are unlikely to be considered too tired to keep their places for Gameweek 2. The only outfield players to have registered 90 minutes against Southampton and 120 on Thursday were Stephen Ward (£5.0m) and Jeff Hendrick (£5.5m), the latter seemingly possessing plenty of stamina having played more pre-season football than any of his colleagues this summer (512 minutes).

Also of note from a Fantasy perspective was that Joe Hart (£4.5m) started in goal once again, and kept a third clean sheet on the bounce. His most recent performance was the best of the lot as he made a string of impressive saves to keep Istanbul out. After a troubled few years on various loans from Manchester City, the former England number one looks as if he can offer value in FPL once again. While Nick Pope (£5.0m) and Tom Heaton (£5.0m) are out with injury and the starting defenders are all in the same price bracket as the pair, Hart seems to be providing a reliable route into the Burnley defence for £0.5m cheaper. Fantasy managers were disappointed to see Dyche’s organised backline receive price hikes across the board for 2018/19 but the developing goalkeeping situation appears to have created a nice little loophole within those changes. However, it’s worth mentioning that Dyche seems to be frustrated with the media spotlight being trained on Hart…

“I’m surprised you’re not fed up, we’ve been talking about him for two weeks. I made a lot of the display of the team. There were a lot of really good performances – Ashley Barnes had an interrupted pre-season but gets stronger and stronger as the game went on, Ashley Westwood was excellent and certainly I thought the two centre halves were absolutely top class. They deserve just as many mentions. Jeff Hendrick as well, and sometimes the fans can question him but I thought he was absolutely tremendous. But Joe definitely played his part, just so you’re happy.”

Fantasy managers should monitor the situation surrounding Charlie Taylor (£4.5m). He came on as a substitute for Gudmundsson at St Mary’s on Sunday and started in his left-wing position on Thursday night at Turf Moor. The former Leeds United defender spent the entire 120 minutes in that position and was one of the better performers for the Clarets. Taylor provided the assist for Cork’s headed goal against Aberdeen in the previous round so has delivery to offer from wide areas. Should any injuries or suspensions strike particularly strongly in this area of the pitch, it is worth knowing there is a potential out-of-position defender ready to step into the breach.

BURNLEY XI (4-4-1-1): Hart; Ward, Gibson, Long, Bardsley; Taylor, Westwood (Cork 82’), Hendrick, Lennon (Gudmundsson 58’); Barnes (Tarkowski 120’); Vokes (Wood 82’).

Seeing a lot of people asking for transfer advice for this week.

I think the main problem is that people seem to be asking "should I bring in X this week" with little or no basis other than they scored in GW1.

Is Kante a sensible transfer in this week? No.
    Is Jorginho? No.

Similarly, Neves is not necessarily the best transfer this week. He's a 5.0m player so any transfer to him is sideways really. Yes he scored and assisted and is a great player but will he do that every week? Of course not!

One game week doesn't give enough data to make informed choices about these players. I'm not saying don't bring them in, but also don't knee-jerk.

Maybe not, but coming from a family of Wolves fans I don't think he'll score and assist in great numbers over the course of the season.

I think he's a great 5.0m option as a nailed on starter who will crop up with the odd assist/goal here and there. But bandwagoning from him from one week is a bit risky.

exactly...for the 0.5m extra players like fraser and delefeu (if he ever converts his awesome ability into rewards) are much better and exciting options...in fact even kennedy i would say is the best 5m option

Could easily fail too - for all those who get "rewarded" by TC in a non DGW and then their player scoring a hattrick there are 10x those who TC and their player fails to score/assist.

Might have failed in a DGW last year but I remember 2 seasons back iirc it was Sanchez who I TC and got a monster score.

It's probably less of a nonsense if you live in a country where your neighbours have been "at war" with you for 50 years.

i agree i was born in the former Yugoslavia and understand what it means being under such a pressure like war, they wanted to send me to war to kill my neighbors just turning 18.but still its Football which should be there to entertain us. they just of there faces to put this on players and coaches its just not right doesn't matter what happen over there.

I think the chance of PVA getting more than 2 points is higher than Fraser getting more than 2 points. I think both West Ham and Liverpool will score, so we're relying on points from the other end of the pitch. And therefore I'd bench Fraser.

Why? Because he scored in GW1. That may be him done.
Averaged about 1 goal in 16 games across his career.
Doesn't really tend to assist either.
I still don't see him as a great FPL pick even at his price point.

Mentioned it previously, with both Jorginho and Kante - one has to go a bit further forward and that one may represent value. Would still this more likely to be Jorginho.

Will keep an eye on it tomorrow, but not looking forward to that match in all honesty. Hazard and co usually turn us over there.

    Ban updates

This will (hopefully) affect very few of you, but there are a few tweaks coming out today for the way bans work.

    1. Starting later today, instead of banning a user outright moderators will have the choice to ban a user for 10 minutes, 1 hour, 12 hours, or 24 hours. A ban longer than that will have to go through an Admin, usually me but occasionally Mark. These bans will not have to be manually removed by the moderator and will instead come off a user's profile automatically.

    2. A ban will trigger an email to the user explaining when their account will be unfrozen. Right now there is also a simple default message in these emails but this will be expanded so that moderators will be able to pick an explanation based on the reason for the ban.

These changes have been implemented in response to various user requests I've received. Hopefully this makes it more clear to a user what the problem is and when they'll be able to post again.

As always, if you have been banned and would like to discuss it email me: geoff@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Not really.. because it'll depend on the severity of the comment, the user's history, the frequency of the problem, etc.

For example a fake goal shout from a trusted user might be only 10m if it's decided they really did it by accident, but if it was from someone who did it before it would easily be 24h.

        1. Reedy
          • 13 Years
          5 years, 8 months ago

Yes but will the frequency of the problem actually be taken into account? It seems to be the same users spamming rubbish every matchday, and no matter how many of their posts get removed, they are always free to post more rubbish moments later.

Yeah, that's exactly why the changes are here. A 10m ban will be a warning and won't allow them to post that stuff immediately after and the bans will be tracked so they can be escalated when appropriate.

Before it was more difficult to navigate matchdays because a ban would then have to be undone and matchdays are busy, so generally users would have content removed then an email drafted.

Going forward though the mod can easily ban them for a short time with a message explaining it, and hopefully users will understand more what it is that is getting their accounts frozen. Then they can decide to stop or they'll get more serious bans

Tough to give set rules on this and I'm hesitant because it will often be a judgement call. Abuse will be 24h generally but obviously there are differing levels so it will sometimes be less.

Spamming questions would probably be a 10m ban and if the user comes back and continues it escalates

I'm concerned you're going to make the site boring. I'm with Debauchy on this one. Like he said, the ocassional lol can be funny, Kane claimed goal or Sanchez assist.

We also have Flashscore to report goals and lineups and most assists.

Could you make a poll for the code of conduct regarding these things? Just feel like the easily offended people are a minority here

I'm not changing the rules about bans, I'm not giving more bans, and I've instructed the mods not to give more bans - this is more about giving some nuance to the things we're already doing, not a change in policy.

Not every lol@ means a ban and I agree there has to be judgement on all this, which is why I've been hesitant to say 'x behaviour deserves y ban'

So like was talked about above a bit this isn't about people taking offence, it's about helping us have users understand why things like spamming posts isn't acceptable, and giving us a way to show them that they can't continue doing it

There are other ways of having fun than trying to deceive others. Deceit will continue to be punished on this site, however, now the mods can point at the rulebook when bans are set.

Flashscore is not relevant for what this site communicates, as it is a totally different service.

Claiming others are "easily offended" is a suppression technique, and a way to legitimize behaviour that other people do not approve of. When there are rules set, how can "easily offended" be of relevance at all?

Also, claiming that this group of people that you have labeled is a minority is just speculation, and hence also a way to legitimize the same behaviour mentioned above.

How is lol@ or shouting Sanchez assist when he isnt playing deceit??

Flashscore gives you updates on the scoreline ans big chances, relevant to the game imo, not as specific as FFS ofc.

And what am I suppressing then? It is legitimizing behaviour though, behaviour I find fun and normal where some people apparently don't. Regarding the rules, they are literally modifying them in recent weeks - based on thr requests of the people I labeled "easily offended". It is pretty obvious how easily offended is relevant.

Before hypothesizing that they are a minority I asked for a poll - ie I asked for a test for my hypothesis.

I can tell that you are one of those who would like the comment section heavily regulated.

Re: bans longer than 24 hours going through admin.

Is there anything to stop rogue mods placing someone on a 24 hour ban and then just repeatedly banning them the moment the ban ends?

          I run a tight ship 😀

No, technically not, but I would see the bans. Also if mods are doing banning without reporting it that's a problem

All communities need a certain degree of policing. To make the rules and the penalties more clear sounds like a good idea. Excellent work, Geoff.

What if someone just screams a name without mentioning anything like goal/assist.
        Like ' Omg Sanchez!!!!"

I wonder what sort of ban Alonsogate would have received. Not only did he crash two websites, he cost a few mini leagues in the process with his fake team news sans Bale.

Looks like this forum will end up with 'politically correct' posters only.

As I said above, the policy on banning users hasn't changed with these updates; if anything it helps us be more transparent and have more discussions with users about what is appropriate and isn't

If the tendency has stopped abusive posters and bullying that's a good thing, not a bad thing

Hope there's a ban every time a user sucks up to a mod.

Woy Hodgson: Zaha is on penalties, free kicks, corners, kick outs, throw ins, half time speech, team tactics and selection.

Can someone please fix the Fulham section on "Team News".

Half of it seems to be indicating they're about to host Crystal Palance and the other half that they're about to play Spurs away at Wembley.

      Just doesn't scan.

Rashford to Austin/Ings or wait and decide after this GW?

Probability that Rash does not start , but going with Austin or Ings this early not clever either, need more info. Play Rash in this situation
