Captains

Vote in the Captain Poll for Gameweek 3

The Captain Poll is now open for votes ahead of Gameweek 3 and you can watch our video on the best candidates for the armband below or on our YouTube channel.

The early favourite is, not surprisingly, Mohamed Salah (£13.0m) who faces a very appealing home match against a Brighton side, who are notoriously poor on the road.

The Seagulls shipped nine goals in two league matches against Liverpool in 2017/18, four of them at Anfield in Gameweek 38. The Egyptian netted in that match and provided the assist for Dominic Solanke’s (£5.0m) 53rd minute goal too.

His case is, of course, strengthened by being Liverpool’s biggest goal threat against Crystal Palace on Monday night, even if he only managed two assists in the end.

Sadio Mané (£9.8m), owned by 31 percent, should prove a strong alternative candidate bearing in mind he is a must-have option for the 45 percent of Fantasy managers who do not own Salah, and remains ahead of him for both goal tally and FPL total score.

Either way, Liverpool assets are expected to dominate the captaincy debate this week considering that West Ham were the only top flight side to survive relegation in 2017/18 with more shots conceded on the road than Brighton.

Sergio Aguero‘s (£11.1m) hat-trick against Huddersfield on Sunday will naturally give him some backing for the captaincy this week, as Manchester City prepare to travel to the Molineux.

Wolves may have allowed fewer shots on their goal than any other side so far, but the fact that have still conceded four goals in two matches suggests there are areas to exploit for the reigning champions.

Aguero might be at slightly more risk of rotation this weekend but we will, as per usual, wait and see what emerges in the press conferences later this week.

After four assists in just two matches, the highly-owned Benjamin Mendy (£6.1m) is an option for a second week running. In fact, he finished third in the poll behind just Aguero and Salah for Gameweek 2.

After West Ham’s performance at Anfield in Gameweek 1 and a defeat at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 3, Arsenal assets might also be worth looking at. The favourites there are expected to be Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£11.0m) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£7.0m).

Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur’s meeting at Old Trafford reduces the appeal of a few usual suspects, namely Paul Pogba (£8.1m), Romelu Lukaku (£11.0m) and Alexis Sánchez (£10.5m) for the Red Devils and Harry Kane (£12.5m) and Christian Eriksen (£9.5m) from the north London outfit.

    Ryan,
    Mendy, Alonso, PVA
    Pedro, Mane, Alli, Miki, Richa
    Auba, Aguero

    (2 pointer bench)

Any changes you would make to this team or shall I stick with it?

My concern would be the absence of Salah obviously, but given Liverpool's fixtures after this week, it's a post wild card worry. It looks very solid. Hold your transfer

Fabri instead of Ryan? Has registered a lot of saves in first 2 games which i think is important for 4.5 GK since CS would be expected to be few.

Ryan was high up at the end of last season. I still think he is a good choice myself.

I actually did want him but I just don't feel comfortable not having a backup 4.0 keeper. All Fulham's back up GK's are 4.5. Do you think I should risk it?

Probably not worth it when factoring in the extra 0.5 for backup, unless you went for hamer. As demel says, ryan was high up on saves list last season as well.

Like this team a lot, if you could squeeze another 0.5m in to do PVA (thought I do rate him) > Robbo to have 2 Liverpool players then it would look ideal to me! (as a non-Salah owner either)

Not a massive fan of a few things with my team:
    Ederson
    Robertson, Coleman, Shaw
    Salah, Siggy, Mane, Richarlison
    Zaha, King, Aguero
    Hamer, Cook, Ward, Wan-Bissaka

I like Siggy and think that he has been really unlucky not to score points but I don’t like Shaw or King and may need to sacrifice Siggy to make replace them. Atm I’m looking at two options –
    1) Shaw, Siggy and King for Mendy, Mkhitaryan and Ings (-8).
    2) Shaw and King for Mendy and Kamara (-4). Leaves 0.7 over.

You can't do 2 as you don't have a strong enough 11th man. Option 1 is not worth 8 points and looks very sideways at best.

I think that Shaw is a big problem - he was always a placeholder but the points from him have been very lucky, and he will be dropped when Valencia returns. Plus Untied are terrible. So it's about getting Mendy in without sacrificing Coleman, who has superb fixtures and attacking potential.

PVA have been doubling up with Schlupp, and covering each other's arse when going offensive/defensive.

Do you think PVA will become less attacking when Max Meyer gets the LM role, as the german is defo better going forward?

    1. OldBenKenobi

He probably had the constant worry of Salah behind him when he bombed forward. With their fixtures coming up I think it will be good old PVA again.

What makes you think Meyer will get that role? Thought he was a centre mid. I wouldn't worry too much either way. Getting forward is instinctive for PVA.

Meyer mostly played attacking midfielder, shadow striker. However, if he does play there, does that mean Zaha goes back to midfield?

Really tough call. Liverpool are the only team in living memory who actually perform better against the top sides, so using fixtures as a factor is not straightforward. City could score get 20 goals in these games though.

Depends partly on your bench. Do you have a decent 1st sub for when Sterling doesn't play?
It also depends what you could do with the extra £1m from going for Mane.

Whoops bottomed, so here we go again... Managed a nifty 170 points from two GWs but not sure where to go from here:

    Kepa
    Mendy • TAA • Peltier
    Salah • B. Silva • Mkhitaryan • Richarlison
    Agüero • Aubameyang • Zaha

    (Stekelenburg • Bennett • Stephens • Wan-Bissaka) • 0 ITB

    A) Start Peltier, hope for an appearance, if not Bennett gets -2 from conceding against City
    or
    B) Peltier-> ... no one for -4 ... seems like a dead end lol

    Mane

I wouldn’t say maverick I’d say just a pure gamble. It’s so hard to predict when a defender will get attacking points, so you then have a big reliance on the clean sheets which the Man City v Huddersfield match showed you can never guarantee even with the best fixtures as all it takes is a small mistake and the clean sheet is gone.

That’s why it’s nothing but a gamble that you are just hoping the stars align and a defender manages to hold onto his clean sheet and get attacking returns, all on the very week you decide to captain him.

          1. jia you
            • 7 Years

Very true but with Mendy and Alonso so far forward their chances of attacking returns are very high when compared to your average defender, but I take your point.

I think of it more like their chances of attacking returns are similar to players like Xhaka. And you wouldn’t ever captain Xhaka.

Both Xhaka and Alonso gained 9 attacking returns last season. Now Alonso may have clean sheets as additional ways of scoring but these can’t be reliably estimated on a specific match so there isn’t a huge amount of extra value in captaining Alonso over Xhaka in one particular week. And a player like Xhaka would never ever ever be considered as a captaincy option.

Well explained, yeah poor captaincy picks as a one off punt then but might not be terrible if you left the armband on them for a very good run of fixtures say, which of course you wouldn't really consider!

You wouldn’t consider but I agree, it certainly could have its merits. I think over a longer period you could average well. One off is just a gamble.

Also with so many great attacking options for this week in particular I think you could help your points potential a lot more with the likes of Mane, Aguero or Auba as captain who could all score double digit points very easily.

I have the same options as you and I'm honestly undecided. Well, undecided between the attackers that is - I would never captain Robertson, Mendy or Alonso! I may be leaning towards Aubameyang for no reason other than I haven't captained him yet, unlike Mane and Aguero.

I was considering taking out King for either Zaha or Ings, but I really cannot decide. King's fixture isn't that bad either, so I have three options:

    a) Zaha
    b) Ings
    c) Play King vs. Everton, then reassess.

King's fixtures are excellent which is why I swapped him for Wilson.
A player with the confidence to run it around the whole of a team's defence and then slot it home is a player I want in my team.

      1. poohdini

His numbers are good as well. My only concern with Wilson is I feel like it is a sideways move and his end to the last season. I think I'll keep King for another week. He may even score a penalty this week, you never know.

Have a feeling Sterling is going to be raging he was dropped and go all out v Wolves. Captain would be a risky call, but could be great if he starts.

Raging? Lol, that's not how it works under Pep. He clearly rested Sterling and Walker due to their World Cup campaign and the fact they played Huddersfield at home. He may very well explode upon return (to Wolves?) but I doubt it's gonna be cause he's 'raging' over being 'dropped'

What to do with Josh King ? No returns in two weeks despite good pre season form, worth £6.4 in my team (with 1.5m ITB) so I can't upgrade to Zaha (I do have Arnie in my team though) - any good budget options coming through sub 7m? They will be in the XI each week, not looking for a punty bench option

I downgraded to Ings so I could upgrade Davies to Alonso and Jota to Mkhi.

For £5.5m I'm not expecting much and will probably keep rotating cheap strikers into that slot based on form every now and again.

It seems a lot of people on here are sacrificing Bilva to accommodate a Pedro/Alonso/Fraser/ etc.
I think Bilva offers great value. Albeit being played out of position against Huddersfield, it in the community shield and Arsenal game he was one of the best players on the pitch! Away from home Pep will play him more advanced
He may take up a Man City slot, but for his price he’s worth it.

Exactly my thoughts. Even in the last match he had a really good chance late on.Again, at his price he is quite good. I do agree though that there are a lot of options in the mid price midfield bracket who are performing. But he will get points for sure.

It's just early season points chasing and catching price rises. If i had Bilva I'd be keeping him.

Hi, posted this in the old article. Would really like comments as I didn't watch most of the matches. Only the Liverpool one (supporter)

Who is the list of players that wont continue to do well even though they scored high in gameweeks 1 and 2. And why.

    My list

Pogba - 2 penalties nothing else. Doesnt look like continuing his fpl performance.
Etheridge - 2 out of 2 penalty saves. You cant make this up!
Sclupp - will probably lose his place in the team.

Got doubts about others. But so far these are on the list.
    Thiughts? Any others?

I disagree with the first 2 completely.

Pogba's PPG was very high last season. He doesn't appear to do a lot but gets constant points (just don't expect a haul). He is the modern day Yaya Toure.

Cardiff will be solid defensively (but limited going forward) Etheridge will keep clean sheets and accumulate save points. If their back up had been 4m i would have had that pair over the Brighton pair pre-season.

Fair enough on Pogba. He did get a lot of assists last season. I guess it slso depends a bit on how muach Man U are attacking and scoring compared to last season.

My team has problems, exacerbated by the WB red card... I can either take hits, or activate the wild card.

Here is my question: how bad do things need to be to activate WC? Is it -12 or worse?

Would appreciate any views on the value of this chip.

A 12pt hit in the first few GW's to change your team up is probably acceptable at this stage as you can easily make the points back and catch the price rises.

86 then 83. Only things I consider mistakes I could have avoided and get 100 every week are going for Davies alongside robbo and mendy rather than shaw or other premium defender like alonso. And then not having Mane because I did not want to take 2 midfield spots using 2 liverpool players...

Salah (c) for me until further notice.

Sessegnon could be for the axe.
