FPL Question Time – Salah vs Mané, international break and Wildcard tips

More names from our panel of Fantasy Premier League managers are back to answer your questions, this time as we go into the first international break of the campaign.

The big question which we’ve had plenty of submissions on is whether Mohamed Salah (£13.om) should come out of our squads.

We’ve got some opinion on that conundrum while the subjects of transfers during the international break and Wildcard tips are also discussed.

Once again, we had an overwhelming response to our request for questions. Unfortunately, we can only answer a handful each week but keep your queries coming in for the rest of the season.

Here’s a reminder of who is on the panel for your Gameweek 4 Question Time:

James Egersdorff – You can’t get much more experienced than this man when it comes to FPL. After yet another season inside the top 5,000 managers in 2017/18, James is a Fantasy Football Scout ‘Hall of Fame’ legend.

Tom from Who Got the Assist? – One half of one of the fastest growing FPL podcasts of recent times.

Holly Shand – Founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community website and recent video star for Official FPL.

QUESTION ONE – JAMES EGERSDORFF

Do we have enough information to be reasonably sure that Mane provides a better points return over Salah and if so, should we be looking to move Salah on?

James: “The lack of a double-digit return from the ‘Egyptian King’, combined with the smoking hot start to the season from Mané has led many FPL managers (myself included!) to investigate the possibility of doing the unthinkable and removing Salah from our squads.

“As a pre-Gameweek 4 Wildcarder, it’s fair to say the idea of cashing in on Salah did look attractive. I spent the week tinkering with my squad given with treasure trove of riches his £13m opened up. It looked like a combination of Mané and Hazard versus Salah and a (roughly) £7m midfielder here.

“It’s definitely a tough choice. We’ve only had four Gameweeks played and therefore only a small sample of data to base such a potentially season-defining decision on. So I kept the Egyptian in my squad.

“We must ask ourselves ‘do we feel that Mané and Salah will maintain their current performance levels?’ Mané is flying right now, with a score of 9.8 per game to Salah’s 6.8. To put that into context, if they were to continue that over 38 Gameweeks, Mané would smash the all-time FPL high score record (303 set by Salah last season) with a whopping 372. Do we really think he’s capable of doing that?

“On the other hand, Salah would weigh in with just over 258, which in fairness isn’t a million miles away from his optimum points per game levels seen in 2017/18.

“Working the figures again, this tells us Salah is underperforming against last year’s figures by around 15 percent, whereas Mane is massively overperforming, even when we factor in his 10-game absence last season.

“The question FPL managers need to ask themselves therefore is whether they feel Salah will make up the performance level deficit and return to the mean and whether Mane can continue to outperform his mean score by such a high margin.”

QUESTION TWO – HOLLY SHAND

How much team value can you potentially earn playing your Wildcard during the international break and is it worth using if your squad doesn’t need a major fix?

Holly: “The international break tends to be a steadier time for price rises and falls than many expect. So I’d expect perhaps just one or two players rising twice, to give the all important £0.1 million gained value.

“However, if you cannot afford the price swings to ditch underperforming assets for the in-form players, the Wildcard can still be valuable.

“Beware the fixture swings and chasing early season points though.

“Liverpool in particular have a tricky upcoming spell.”

QUESTION THREE – TOM

If you are not planning to use the Wildcard for Gameweek 5, how many point hits should we consider taking to make up an injury and suspension filled squad? Also, should we be making early transfer considering how fast players prices are rising?

Tom: “How many hits should we consider? Well, obviously this depends very much on your team and what the situation is.

“If you are dead set on keeping your Wildcard, I’d focus on getting a good XI out for Gameweek 5, after International Break, rather than fixing bench fodder – unless you are doing a combination move as part of your hit (i.e. moving a £4.5 defender down to a £4.0 to free up cash).

“That being said, I’d be thinking that if you need multiple hits to deal with your team’s injuries and suspensions then there’s no need to be stubborn about pulling your wildcard; your squad needs it.

“Should we make early transfers considering how fast players’ prices rise? It depends in what context.

“If there’s little to no midweek action, as we’ve seen at the start of this season, then an early transfer is a risk that can be worth taking.

“However as we saw with Wilfried Zaha and Kevin de Bruyne picking up training ground knocks you are never immune from a shock injury.

“But as we start to enter the period where continental football and other cup competitions return, I’d advise being more cautious with your early transfers as you may end up needing a hit to fix an impetuous move.

“Essentially: you’ll remember your overall rank at the end of the season, not your team value.”

I’d just leave him be and roll with AWB as sub until you WC or have 2FT.

Money drops like that are crap but the other 4.4m aren’t gonna be setting the world on fire and would probably drop anyway in time.

what about this for a wc team? 0.3 itb

    Hennesey, McCarthy
Alonso, Mendy, Robertson, Holebas, (Wan Bissaka)
Hazard, Mane, Lucas Moura, Fraser, (Højbjerg)
    Aguero, Vardy, (Mitrovic)

Not sure on Holebas and Moura. Could get Maddison / Pedro / Ramsey? Or dowgrade Holebas - and spend up to 8.1
    Thoughts?

I would take a chance on Trippier over Robo as you have defensive cover on rotation.

Strong side. Pogba could be interesting differential over next few fixtures. Same situation as a lot of us on the Hazard front but I'd go with your gut. If you're gonna make that change it's Salah for a swap and the fixtures swing in Hazard's favour so timing couldn't be better for the change.

Anyone preferring Jimenez over Ings? Ings has better stats, though with slightly better fixtures behind him. But I would likely bench him for 2 or the next 4 games, and 3 of the next 7. On the other hand, Jimenez could be benched for just 1 of the next 6, and Wolves have shown that they can put in a performance against top opposition anyway. Plus Jimenez seems to have a little bit more quality than Ings from what I've seen, with solid shots outside as well as inside the box, and should get more minutes. What do you think?

Posted this earlier. Would love to know views from a different crowd.

I'm finding it tricky to settle on a frontline on my WC.

With plenty of us WCing in the IB, I think it would be beneficial to look at what strikeforce managers are getting in.

Plenty of premium options fired this past GW. We have the likes of Aguero, Lukaku, Auba and Laca staking their claims.

Then we have the cheaper options like Mitrovic, Wilson, Murray etc and of course the returning Vardy who has juicy upcoming fixtures.

With the defense and midfield fairly settled for most WCers, It would be interesting to know how they are spending their funds up front to accommodate/sacrifice that one extra heavy hitter elsewhere.

Would also like to hear from non WCers about how they are reshaping their frontlines if at all.

FWIW I'm currently on Aguero - Lukaku - Wilson.

      Burnt my WC already.

      Kun, Zaha, Ings.

If Zaha is fit then I'll stick with him. If he isn't then I'll pick up Deeney/Wilson/Mitrovic.

All of their stats are great, including Ings.

      I'm on Aguero - Arnie - Mitro , looking at Arnie -> Deeney/Wilson after GW5 possibly.

OR I will WC next week and get Lacazette and/or Vardy

Aguero - Laca - Wilson for me. All 3 have great fixtures. Considering Vardy for Laca but unless I find a good use of the .5 I wont do it.

Assuming no injuries do we think Emery sticks with the same XI against Newcastle that beat Cardiff and Mkhi spends another week on the bench?

Assuming he keeps LacAuba up front, then Mkhi / Ozil could be out.

Got to think Lacazette will start with Auba on the left. Mkhi and Ozil fighting for the other spot, Ozil most likely.

    WC team:

    Patricio (4.0 million)
Robertson, Mendy, Alonso (Wan Bissaka, Connolly)
    Salah, Mane, Hazard, Fraser, Neves
    Aguero, Jimenez (Kamara)

Like it and a bit different to the norm! Only suggestion I would prob drop Robbo to a 5m player and upgrade Kamara to Ings or equivalent to give you bench cover across front 3.

Plus Zaha got crocked & Wilson came off the bench for 2 points. Salah blanked.

Rough; Salah and Ryan both a let down. Held my transfer rather than selling Cairney I started WB who blanked.

Smooth; Aguero(c) but held back on the triple..was a very close call! Mendy, Robertson, held my nerve on Auba and got my points back on last week's transfers ( King>Ings & Eriksen>Mane). 2 FT's now for a mini-wildcard.

      55 all out.

      Smooth:

      Salah (C) = 4 points

Rougher: Held him despite price drop

Rougher still:1st Sub this week after Wan Bissaka's 0 points

Smooth: ML rival had him 3rd sub

Wildcarded this week as had to get Alonso and need to get Hazard and Mitrovic now to avoid being priced out and didn't want to take -12 to do it. So Rich,Mane, Arnie and PVA out Alonso Hazard Mitrovic Fraser. Fraser benched for net +12. Got Mkhi's 1 point cameo and kept Fab instead of getting Patricio and regretting already. Salah blank and Kun(c) not great either. Still 55 and a green arrow keeping me in top 10k

Smooth; virtually nothing but did play Doherty and Mané got a decent score.
Rough; almost everything, Fab lost cs and bonus in last minute, 3 points in total from three midfielders, 5 including Salah. One of those weeks..

The 7m market in both midfield an strikers department is turning into quite a minefield area, and picking the right ones could be crucial. So far i´m on the wrong side of the luck.

Smooth - Used 2 FT Daniels & Richarlison --> Alonso & Kante (enabler) rather than bring in Walcott.

Just seen how young Mitrovic is. I thought he was pretty average at Newcastle a few years ago so wasn't sure what all the fuss was about. Just realised he was only 19/20 at the time! I reckon he could be a 15+ striker this year.

to be fair he turned up and just chinned everyone for six games and it was downhill from there

guy is a monster though. I owned him in our draft game a few times but didn't buy him this year 🙁

Didn't realize how young he was myself until I checked during the world cup. He's a beast, especially for his age. Silva and Miranda had their hands full when they played against them. I'm glad that I watched that game as it helped convince me to get him

Just 3 home games in his next 8 matches.

I do wonder if he'll be fixture proof.

        8 headed goal attempts
        Penalties
        Free kicks

that's what you want to see if you're thinking longer term

What's this video of Alisson? Has he been caught with his pants down?

Does Mark have any input into who appears on the FPL Show?

Just out of interest, why did people with Ings bench him?

Did you prefer your £4 5m mid or £4.1m defender over him?

Regardless of price, wouldn't you start Ings as 3rd striker every week? He's a good striker.

I'm starting him every week unless tough fixture. Good value

He was yellow flagged so was worried by a cameo.

Home to Southampton is a great fixture for a defender.

Usually I'd start an attacking player over a defender 99% of the time, but this was the 1%. I'd make the same decision again.

He's scored off the bench this season already though.

I genuinely rate him and would have started him if I had him. I start King every week and think Ings us better and more consistent.

Just trying to figure out why so many people got him in over the last week or so then benched him.

We've told you the reasons. Are you enjoying the feeling of superiority or something?

Please don't judge. It's an ugly quality in a person.

A lot dropped him (me included) because the reports suggested he may not play or play a bit part so wanted to avoid the 1pt cameo!

Price doesn't enter into it for me. I wasn't sure he would start and didn't think he would score. But then I was hoping a bit that the Tomkins injury wouldn't keep him out...basically I read into the injury news wrong.

It can't be understated how important Zaha's surprise omission was, too. Palace never win without him, it seems!

No. Team looks pretty good. Zaha and walcott are the only worries but you can cover them with your bench

Similar to mine. I've gone Holebas and Vardy over Bennett and Laca
