Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

Best way to get Alonso in?
    A. Tomkins & DSilva > Alonso & Pereyra (-4)
    B. Robertson & Zaha > Alonso & Ings/Deeney (-4)
    C. Wait a week on Alonso

I would like to report UEFA for crimes against football.

Lionel Andrés Messi Cuccittini has not been shortlisted for UEFA's best player.

Apparently he had a poor world cup, yet managed to score a hattrick in a must win game Vs Ecuador to qualify, help the poorest Argentina side in living memory out of the group and a last 16 exit to France after 2 assists in that game. The same stage Ronaldo exited. Also scoring a world class goal Vs Nigeria and it being voted for the Puskas award.

Apparently had a poor Champions League yet but he only lost 1 game, and was knocked out on away goals.. whereas Ronaldo and Modric lost 2. Also having 6 MOTM's to Ronaldo's 2.

Has the same heat map as Mesut Özil, yet scored more goals than any other player in Europe. Assisted more goals than anyone in Europe.

Scores free kicks almost on a weekly basis as if they're easy as penalties.

He's the greatest player in the history of football, for more than a decade he performs 10/10 every game. And continues to do so.

This is a robbery. This robbery dwarfs any robbery in the history of mankind.

He's become so good at football, that it's become normal, and is now underrated.

    I am very upset.

It's UEFA...so surely it's based on Champions/Europa League and domestic leagues only

FIFA things like internationals and world cups have no bearing?

      Only things under UEFA's jurisdiction.

There are many stats that can be compared with messi ahead of ronaldo in some and ronaldo ahead of messi in others.

Btw ronaldo is also 3 years older so that many more years of football playing to get more stats in.

              Show me some stats then?

And I agree Messi is younger, but that article covers that. Yes Messi May have age on his side, but until he does achieve what Ronaldo has achieved he simply cannot be classed as the best player of all time.

I mean messi for me is the best player but I'm not claiming he actually is the best player. Neither ronaldo. Both have achieved crazy things.

For stats simply Google it and you will find enough. For example ronaldo's 2 goals aren't as important in a game they were already winning by a few in comparison to decisive goals messi scores.
Anyhow everyone has their opinion which is all fine. I just replied to you because your stats don't show the whole story. I have respect for both.

                  Fair enough.

To be honest I personally prefer watching Messi, he’s so much more fun to watch.

But a friend sent me that link of achievements and I can’t look past that personally.

This is a terrible justification. Messi scores a similar amount of goals to Ronaldo, while spending most of his time in midfield areas and carries both his club and national teams. He is a better dribbler, passer and finisher than Ronaldo. He led La Liga in goals, assists, assists to the assist, chances created and successful dribbles this past season. Anyone that doesn't consider Messi the greatest player either doesn't watch him play or is simply deluded.

You say Messi carries his club and his nations team - So does Ronaldo. But Ronaldo carries his team even better than Messi does.

Your next point I agree with to a certain extent, Messi is a better dribbler.

Your third point comes from someone with a weak argument. When talking about the best player of all time you look at everything they have done, not their past season.

I prefer to watch Messi personally, however the facts state Ronaldo is better and someone needs to come up with a better argument over your weak opinion to pursuade me to go against facts.

I gave you facts, but convieniently you diismissed them as a "weak argument". There are no facts that prove Ronaldo is better, that's why you haven't provided any. The only things Ronaldo is better at is heading, penalties and shooting with his weaker foot, yet Messi's goal conversion rates are still far superior to Ronaldo's so I guess those things don't amount to much.

I believe UEFA award is for UEFA competition and international stage only. In that respect ronaldo def has the upper hand given then won CL and he scored 15 goals while at it.

I am a messi fan and overall I do believe he is the better player hands down. But this debate has no end. And to be honest both are to be respected.

Patricio | Fabianski (rotate surprisingly well)

Doing some good ol’ fashioned tinkering and came up with a left field alternative plan....

What if I say stuff Hazard and his potential and do this:

Mkhi, Wally, PVA > D.Silva, Fraser, Holebas (-8)

    Would give me:
    £0.4itb
    Fabianski
    Alonso, Robbo, Mendy, Wan-B
    Salah, Mané, Dilva, Fraser
    Aguero, Wilson
    (Foster) (Holebas, Hughes, Kamara)

    Now isn't that fairly lovely?

Too radical imo. No need to ship PVA esp if Tomkins is fit. Keep one of Mikki/Walcott at least, you could use one of them to get Rich back next week.

So you would just do the boring Mkhi > Pedro/ Maddison/ Fraser?

Doesn't seem to be playing very far forward. Not firing off many shots. Not showing the form his price needs I think even with good fixtures. I'm staying well clear for now

Because Salah's a better captaincy option and Aguero is a must right now and it will be very difficult to fit all 3 in one team.

When Kane scores, he usually scores 2(+). So he’s probably the better captaincy option on his day.

Doesn't look like the player he was last season. More than likely he'll score against Liverpool (always does), however doubt he will kick on from there for quite a few games yet. In fact he should have been rested for this weeks internationals for his own good. Sterling knew what he was doing.

Have a look at the RMT Tool for a second opinion. It’s recommending Salah/Aguero/Hazard as captain for almost all of the upcoming fixtures.

    OK guys

WC intact and not taken a hit this season yet. 1ft 0.5itb

    Patricio

    Mendy/Robbo/PVA

    Salah/Bilva/Mikki/Pedro

    King/Firmino/Aguero

    (Sket/Stephens/AWB/Pielter)

    At 350k at present

    Thanks

    Got some advice earlier.

    So
    Firmino ➡️ Mitrovic
    Pielter ➡️ Alonso

    Play 4 at the back
    Bench King

    Save WC
    Deal with midfield later?

      WC.

Bilva, Mikki, Firmino, Peltier, Stek, Stephens at minimum need to go.

Then you're also without any Chelsea cover. It's too many holes to plug.

Nah. In fairness "only" mid price options thats the problem, no big players or structure which is the ideal use of a WC. Stek and Stephens are not issues imo. A hit this week then only 2 (small) issues left.

Firmino -> Mitro not ideal, but gets you Alonso and good going forward. But then you still have 3 potential issues with King, Bilva and Mikki. Might consider a -4 next week as well.

New Spurs stadium doesn’t look remotely close to being completed. But I do like how the video screens aren’t right behind the goals like in the Olympic Stadium. Should be a good one once it opens.

Last season, towards the end of the season, Barcelona are still undefeated in the league, they're 2-0 down to Sevilla, it should be 6-0, Messi is carrying a knock so is on the bench, comes on for a 15 minute cameo, Sevilla drop 10 yards and they're petrified, Messi destroys them and tears them a new behind. Finishes 2-2, Messi masterclass and worldie of a goal.

    Messi effect.

I'm trying to ride price rises and create extra cash on my WC with quite a bit of early joy.
If Pedro, Robbo, Moura, Deeney or Neves rise again I can afford this:

    Mccarthy (or another 4.5), Hamer

    Alonso, Mendy, Holebas, AWB, Shaw

    Hazard, Salah, Mane, Fraser, Hojberg

    Aguero, Mitrovic, Kamara

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

Hate to break it to ya, but they most likely won't. Very little transfer activity over an Intl. break. Also, double Liverpool mids with their fixtures really ain't great.

Sorry, I currently have Moura too and so have another option there. Seems to have been loads of transfers already from what I can see and my theory is that this GW is the best chance

to gain maximum value as people are still interested as its early on in the season but bored as no PL game for 2 weeks so transfer volume will increase... I might just be being overly optimistic though

On a wildcard, midfield is a headache... thoughts? Comes down to Hazard vs Mane I think?

    Currently have:
    Hennessy (Hamer)
    Mendy Robbo Alonso (Holebas, Bennet)
    Salah Mane Moura Pereyra (Hojgbjergjghj?)
    Aguero Wilson Mitro
    0.1 ITB

Looking at downgrading Holebas, then one of Moura/Pereyra so that Mane can become Hazard.

Is that a better option? If so, what moves do you think? Or should I just leave it?

Anyone fully understand UEFA Nations League?

Apparently the finals will be June 5-9, 2019, the 4 winners of which will qualify for Euro 2020.

But the main Euro 2020 qualifying takes places after June 2019.

Won't this mean you can pre-qualify by winning the nations league, therefore not needing to try hard in the main qualifying?

I've obviously misunderstood something along the way I know but WHAT????
