Burnley’s fixtures easing up – but their defence remains a concern

With Wolverhampton Wanderers (a), Bournemouth (h), Cardiff City (a) and Huddersfield Town (h) next up for Burnley, the Clarets sit top of our Season Ticker for defence over the coming four Gameweeks.

All is not well at Turf Moor, however. A defence that performed so admirably and proved so popular among Fantasy bosses in 2017/18 that their goalkeeper and hitherto first-choice back four all rose to £5.0m in Fantasy Premier League this season have flattered to deceive.

Sean Dyche’s side have conceded as many goals after four league fixtures (nine) than they had after 12 matches of the previous campaign, offering little encouragement for those considering drafting in a Burnley defender for this quartet of upcoming encounters.

Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (£4.9m) were both dropped to the bench for the visit of Manchester United last weekend, with fatigue hardly a factor given that the full-back pair had both sat out the Thursday night encounter with Olympiakos.

Dyche’s comments after the match on Sunday acknowledged the repercussions of the Thursday/Sunday fixture turnaround but implied that Charlie Taylor (£4.5m) and Phil Bardsley‘s (£4.4m) inclusions at left-back and right-back respectively were merited on performance:

We’ve been trying to monitor the workload of the players, equally monitoring the ones who have laid down a little bit of a marker and done well.

Ben Mee (£5.0m) struggled against Romelu Lukaku, meanwhile, not getting close enough to the Belgian forward for either of his goals and perhaps being fortunate not to concede a penalty when lunging at the United striker in the second half.

Mee could soon find his place in jeopardy from Kevin Long (£4.3m) or Ben Gibson (£4.9m), the latter having missed the defeat to the Red Devils with a stomach problem.

With such doubt over personnel and a lack of confidence in the backline as a whole, Burnley’s defenders are not quite the attractive proposition they ought to be for this run of matches between Gameweeks 5 and 8.

The all-important goals conceded column aside, though, are Dyche’s side statistically performing any worse than they were in 2017/18? Members can read on for our assessment of the Clarets’ defence.

Hey all. How’s this for a WC team?
Initially had Auba, but getting Vardy instead has allowed me to get DSilva. Good move?

    Patricio, Hamer
    Alonso, Mendy, Robo, AWB, Bennett
    Hazard, Mane, DSilva, Pereyra, Fraser
    Aguero, Vardy, Kamara

352, with 2 cheap playing defenders on the bench.

The first thing I checked was if Salah was in your team :). Good move. DSilva looks like starting. But you know the risks so go for it imo.

Cheers! Had Salah to start the season cause I was too scared not to, but now happy with Mane. Could come back to bite me!

Really hoping Vardy and DSilva can match or close to matching some of the more expensive attackers. I think they can with their fixtures!

    2. Eze Really?

      Top side.
More or less what I would do.
Interested in how many changes you made?

Cheers thanks! Made 8 changes all up. Had Salah before so freed up funds for other changes. Had big problems with injury and form. Team was great GW1 and 2, but made some bad changes. Got rid of DDG, Coleman, PVA, Mkhi, Walcott, Zaha, Gunnarsson who all had issues.

Then great to use the WC.
          Obviously gone template on defenders.
          Thoughts on Trippier over Robertson?
You have enablers if Trippier rotated.

Funny you should ask! I’ve been trying to fit Trippier in. Replacing Robbo would be the easy solution, but Robbo has been in my team from the start and has been superb. Doesn’t feel right taking him out. Don’t fancy either for GW5 against each other but Robbo against Saints after that would kill me if he scored well again. Maybe after that game I’ll trade.

Probably the only reason the WC had a weakness.

I also toyed with Trippier in for Bennett and downgrading DSilva for the money, then I just had too many punts and benching headache.

Hi Lads, Can you RMWCT please?

    Patricio, Foster
    Alonso, Mendy, Robbo, AWB, Bennett
    Salah, Pedro, Pereyra, Fraser, Moura/Maddison
    Vardy/Laca?, Kun, Ings

    issues I have is which to pick between;

    a. Moura or Maddison for last Mid spot

    b. Vardy or Laca for fwd spot?

    what are your thoughts?

    Cheers

Very close to mine above. Same defence. Have a look at mine. I’ve gone without Salah though which has allowed me Mane, Hazard and DSilva. Risky without Salah but I’m going for it!

Funny I noticed that ours were very simular but yes you have no Sala but Mane is on fire atm so u should be ok with him for the Reds cover along with Robbo.

any thoughts on my questions lad?

Vardy for me as he’s nailed. Laca could be great, but I’m worried about his minutes. Auba will play, but then you can’t play Ozil and Laca with him.

Same thing with Moura’s minutes as well with Son back. But I probably wouldn’t want 2 Leicester attackers. I like Pereyra over Moura to be honest.

I dropped Salah and got Hazard in my WC last week (had a touch also putting the armband on him!). I think there's value in moving some funds up top to give better options for when needing to jump on the next must have - Kane for example.

Does anyone know on average how many goals are scored by teams using set pieces throughout the season or where this data is available. Want to see how valuable the set piece duties really are (on average).

Of course many of the goals from set pieces are direct one touch goals. So maybe really need those which give the taker the assist. Not sure if this is even available. Searching google currently.

Sorry to say man, but not a fan after listening to your 2 latest pods.
I know it’s the break, but you need more content related to the actual game. A lot of defending the scout cast (which I’m a big fan of), but constructive criticism is definitely okay. I know it’s free content, but they are making money off of it. A few has been too harsh, but most are trying to give helpful tips on how to improve.
Secondly moaning about your Walcott pick and the reactions (I chose him over Pedro as well) isn’t what you want to hear in a podcast. One of the main arguments against Walcott was that he was kind of injury prone and unreliable. Of course there are always going to be a few lads being smug, but what are you bringing to the discussion in your podcast?
Either way, a single guy FPL podcast should imo be about the game and probably not just about what you think is wrong about the FFS / FPL community.
I know you have a lot of interesting points to make about the game, strategies, players etc., so my tip would be to focus more on that. There is enough complaining about this site on here - no need for a podcast solely about that.
Hopefully you’ll find your own place among the many good FPL podcasts out there, but you current approach isn’t for me at least.
Hope it wasn’t too critical, as I hope to listen to you going forward.
      Good luck

So I don't mean to point out the obvious here.. but with this being a members article, why does the title sum up the article? Shouldn't it be a bit more bland if your trying to get someone to pay to get the info? Better yet, don't those that have the membership, deserve to have that privilege of gaining the knowledge of the article without feeling like the title spoon feeds the masses?
"Burnley's fixtures easing up, are they worth investing in?" would seem a bit more sensible to me.. I mean.. I didn't even need to open the article to know exactly what it said!

I posted a good example of a perfectly subtle and informative title that wouldn't give away the plot.

    Is Kane worth the money?

I was gonna go for Kane in my Wildcard, but got Lukaku Auba and Aguero obv. I think Kane should be considered a bit later.

Will Walcott be fit to play in GW5?

And what are the chances of a Walcott rise and Richarlison drop in price? Want to make the switch for GW6.

Would say there is a good chance he plays if it is bruised ribs. Richarlison certain to drop but Walcott has zero chance of a rise.

Guys, is Bettinelli (Fulham GK) nailed starter? I just wildcarded, and got a very nice team, but only 4.4 for a keeper, which leaves me with one option plus Hamer

Should I WC out Salah, Mkhi, Zaha, TAA, DDG and Lucas for Mane, Hazard, Lukaku, Bennett, Hennessey and Fraser this week? Considering everyone in front of me in my mini league has Mkhi, Salah, Zaha and Lucas.

Leaving me with a team that looks like this:

    Hennessey-Hamer
    Cook*-Alonso-Mendy-Bennett-AWB
    Hazard-Mane-Maddison-Fraser-Odoi
    Wilson-Lukaku-Aguero

*Cook to Lowton or Holebas maybe?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated :).

Guys I deperately need help here...

Not sure where you post stuff like this but...

I've been away for basically the whole of the start of the season. Set my team up in GW1, and all I have had time to do is transfer injured players out. I've been travelling so its been almost impossible to follow anything.

I was hoping to enter a team that would have done just OK enough to get me home so I could pay attention.

THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED and I have no idea who is playing well/bad.

Please help me... I am close to 100 points behind already... eurgh.

    Current team

    Hart
Wan Bissaka - Robertson - Davies
    Walcott - Salah - Eriksen - Pedro
    King - Arnautovic - Aguero

    BENCH
    Patricio - McArthur - CedricS - Tomkins

1 million in the bank and one FT.

    Patricio, Foster
    Alonso, Mendy, Robbo, AWB, Bennett
    Salah, Pedro, Pereyra, Fraser, Moura
    Vardy, Kun, Ings

    01itb

    thoughts?

Hard to say without seeing the rest of your team. Assuming 2 of the 3 would play a week, Robbo + Madds is a nice upgrade (over TAA + Deeney). The rest of your bench would have to be strong enough to support the fact that your 3rd sub wouldn't be playing, instead of having Cairney there.

      Hope that made sense!

        Yeah it does.

        My team is
        Pat
        taa mendy Alonso holabas wa

        haz pedro cairney walcott mane

        deeney firmino aguero

Hoping rich goes down to straight swap with walcott, maybe
But got enough from robbo / mad upgrade but have to stick with kamara.
