Bournemouth’s budget defenders enhance their FPL appeal

Callum Wilson (£6.2m) and Ryan Fraser (£5.6m) have occupied a lot of column inches on this site in recent weeks thanks to their excellent underlying attacking statistics, but the Cherries’ quietly impressive defence will be the sole focus of this article.

With most of their backline available around the £4.5m price bracket in Fantasy Premier League this season, Bournemouth’s defenders are budget-friendly assets that have the potential to rack up a clean sheet or two over the next half-dozen matches at the very least: the Cherries, in fact, sit top of our Season Ticker for the coming six Gameweeks.

Eddie Howe’s backline is not one that is normally associated with solidity, of course, and there is a reason why their defensive assets are available on the cheap.

The Cherries have conceded more than 60 goals in each of their three previous seasons as a Premier League side and kept the joint-lowest number of clean sheets (six) in the top flight in 2017/18.

As we touched on in our Digest feature earlier this week, though, Howe’s troops have been posting some uncharacteristically promising defensive statistics in the first four Gameweeks of this campaign.

This Members’ piece takes a closer look at their key performance indicators (KPIs) at the back and highlights which of Bournemouth’s FPL defenders stand out from a Fantasy perspective.

I reckon not making the World Cup really knocked his confidence, Mendy then returning has made his situation even worse.

Which five from this seven would you pick -
Salah, Mane, Hazard, Pedro, Moura, Peryrea, Fraser
Currently going without Salah and Fraser, but it's allowing me to go Lacazette over Deeney.

Salah Hazard Pedro Fraser and Mane but would mean a weak defence or no Kun

Just chanced that...need to find 2.2 million from around the team (have salah, Mane and hazard prior to WC, but nothing else really upfront or midfield)
Feel mane can cover salah, so was going to use those funds else where. Suffered to much in recent weeks with poor auto subs, getting the 1 and 0 pts, so don't want to be too diminished now. Not feeling positive about owning both with tough fixtures and rotation.

Side note, Liverpool have a hectic three weeks, and even being a Liverpool fan who knows how well they can play, there's going to be rotation with spurs, psg, sothampton, chelsea, Chelsea, napoli, city.
The likes of shaquri and sturridge could become very hand with rotations in coming week.

        El Fenomeno R9
I'm 1.7 off that combo, so would possibly have to sell a mendy/alonso, or else Wilson out to manage again, which I swapped for on WC.
I'll be racking the brain over the coming week, and feel will come down to Hazard & Mane, or else Pedro & Salah, to try allow better overall 11 & stronger bench.

Had chambers and Stephens auto sub in twice in last 2 weeks, to give me 5pts from 4 players. Poor choices granted but when chosen at start the were cheap options, but if Europe coming can't afford to get caught out again.

            Team lining up as follows
            Fab / Patrico
            Mendy Alonso Hobelas Bennett WBA
            Hazard Mane Pedro Peryera Fraser
            Aguero Lazacette Wilson

0.7 itb to change possibly benett/wba prior to deadline.
Back of mine debating moving patrico/ fab to hamer to free up funds to possibly change mane to richarilson/schurlle and then Wilson to lukaku after the spurs match as no United coverage. But that would leave no Liverpool coverage

            Long week ahead!!

Arron wan bisaka nil thank for feedback

I can get Fraser and billing with the big 3 but leave me with near same team.as pre wildcard and bench worse off I think.

Would still have fab mendy Alonso awb salah mane hazard kun, with only alterations of note
        Out
foster chambers tomkins jorginho Stephen's zaha kamara

        In
hamer hobleas Bennett Fraser billing deeney wilson.

which leaves me with a weaker bench than before and somewhat underwhelming wildcard. It's the midfield where Point can be made over the coming month or two doesn't to sort properly to maximise.

Firstly, I pay to support the site. I feel they’ve taken it up a couple of notches this season, with these member articles. I try to process as much information as possible to help me make my own decisions. Information packaged like this, on topics I wouldn’t have tried to dig deeper into myself, are well worth the fee.

I think all articles should be restricted to Members only. Give non members a couple of paragraphs. 15 pounds is nothing for an annual subscription to a site that generates so many articles.

there are Patreon sites that are charging 10-25 pounds per month and offering way less than FFS ever does.

When Salah starts to outperform Mané, will all those who thought Mané would cover him say they’ve been trolled? Or will they fess up and admit they got it wrong?

They would knee jerk mane out which will suit them well as Mane has outperformed Salah by much more than 4pts

It’s not just about Salah v Mans though isit, it’s what you do with the extra 3 odd million. Which in my case is Vardy over Ings if I decide to go without Salah

It's fulfilling to maintain the moral high ground.

Imo the reasoning many wish the worst for England is not so much dislike towards the team or supporters. It's the persistent failure of the British mainstream sports media to fail to even recognise that there are more to the British isles that just England FC.

WC this double week. You have an idea of form, and have a chance for price rises. There is the added bonus that if you get it right you cash in for longer. When they changed the rules to have it expiring in December it made it less useful to hold on

If you mean why that general rule:

Forward over Defenders is the general go to rule of thumb if you are uncertain.

There's a couple of reasons for it - Different people might have different reasons but I'll give you mine:

Defenders points, primarily, is clean sheets. This means that it tends to be quite easy to predict a defenders returns - They get clean sheets in the easy fixtures and concede in the harder ones. Once you get to the premium end, your Alonso's etc, you are talking about teams that can get clean sheets anywhere OR have a good chance of attacking returns. We've seen with Holebas that he can get these attacking returns, but he's nowhere near the level of me having the faith that his potential for attacking returns can outbalance the fact that he probably won't keep a clean sheet. You additionally have the issue that defenders are very capable of scoring 1, 0, -1 etc because if their team has a bad game, they tend to rack up the minus points. If a forward has a bad game, you are looking at a 2 at the lower end.

With forwards, it's a lot less predictable. Players like Mitro, Arnie, Zaha etc are capable of getting returns in any game, and are far more likely to do so than keeping a clean sheet. Despite having a bad fixture, they have a decent chance of getting a goal or something.

Basically, when you are struggling to pick between two options with bad games, defenders are looking at 1,2 points but forwards are looking at 2 or 6.

If you mean why Mitro over Holebas:

Far more likely Mitro will score than Watford will keep a cleansheet. Don't trust Holebas to get decent attacking returns.

Thank you for your answer. I meant why in that general rule.

I see your point but I do not agree. Surely you do not expect Mitrovic to score against City. Ofc I wouldn't be surprised if he did though.
But some defenders are very attacking + can get a cleanie AND attacking returns. Holebas could easily get an assist against Utd.

Holebas (Manchester United @ HOME) is an attacker with clean sheet points potential.
Versus Mitrovic (Manchester City @ away) facing the best team in the Premier League.

Just to be clear this was just my general thinking about attacker's Vs defender's. Not particularly about Holebas Vs Mitrovic.

      Tough one
City gotta keep a cleanie soon enough and Utd was facing Burnley last game so not convinced on their attacking.
