Can Watford’s form and Fantasy appeal last much longer?

Watford have been the surprise package in the Premier League this season, level on points with table-topping Liverpool and causing Fantasy managers to investigate their assets.

The Hornets have won all of their matches so far and have held onto their 100% record longer than defending champions Manchester City.

Their most recent result was the most impressive of the lot, a 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Vicarage Road in Gameweek 4.

Lose or even draw with Spurs and very few would have batted an eyelid. But emerging from that match as come-from-behind winners put Watford decisively in the spotlight.

Fantasy managers the world over have been asking whether Javi Gracia’s in-form side can sustain their impressive displays.

It’s a vitally important question as many consider their Wildcard squads. Overlook the Hornets in the event that they go on to do great things this season and you could be left behind. Alternatively, overinvest when they are but a flash in the pan and the same could happen.

We’ve gone over the data for the first four matches of the season to see just how serious we should take the Hornets’ buzz.

Obviously, they're gonna regress sooner rather than later but it's still commendable the way they've started the season.

A top 10 finish looks certain as things stand. A top 8 finish would be remarkable.

You need a bit of Alonso in your team 😉

You can get Fraser instead of Pereyra. Saves you some € to get Alonso next week.

Sensational midfield once Richy's back. I'd be tempted to dump Foster for a 4m and get Ings in over Jim but very nice, yes.

      How’s this WC team looking?

      Patricio - Hamer
      Alonso - Mendy - Shaw - AWB - Bennet
      Hazard - Mane - Pedro - Maddison - Billing
      Aguero - Lukaku - Jimenez

      - Jimenez bit of the but, but prefer him to Ings to be fair
      - Pedro to become Richarlison for GW7
      - For now I am on Patricio, but looking at Hennesey / McCarthy / Ryan as well as „set and forget 4.5 GK”

Whenever another premium priced player is outscoring the highest priced player in the game, it's always interesting to see how people react. I've only been dipping in and out this week (oo-err missus), but there's nearly always a comment related to Salah ownership.

RMT's without Salah, get the inevitable "No Mo" response, while others will go to the lengths of creating new posts forewarning us of the dangers of not owning Salah when player X stops delivering. Said "player X" is currently Mané; someone who is known to be explosive but perhaps not consistently so. Hazard also has some backing by the fixtures over form brigade, with signs that form is following.

Short of going into article length territory, what I find intriguing is the psychological response to this challenge. The thought process goes, "Salah is the most expensive player in the game; he ought to score the most points and be my most reliable captain pick.". We cling to this security blanket so when Salah(c) brings returns and a gameweek turns out well, we're reassured that we're playing the game correctly.

There are ALWAYS more maverick people playing the game, however. They may have concluded that the premium you spend in securing Salah weakens the squad elsewhere, and spread their funds more evenly. Their decision to do so may be ignorance as equally as it may be from pouring over the stat tables (an FFS Member's article earlier in the week compared Salah and Mané and my conclusion was that Mané was the greater threat, but I didn't get a chance to comment as to why at the time). They may simply want to play the game differently, but the consequence that they all have in common is more premium priced alternatives.

At the minute, the maverick group of people are winning. Salah has not been essential this season. He maybe on track for 300 points this season, but so are the alternatives.

It's at this point, someone mentions last season's results. Salah posted 303 points, he's FPL royalty. So why aren't these people owning Kane? Aren't these the same people who last year clinged to Kane auto-captain week in, week out and ignored Salah? Are they now blinkered by Salah ownership?

My personal view is that Salah is the best FPL player in the game to own. But he won't be worth owning for the entire season. Someone somewhere will get the balance right, perhaps going with Mané and using the additional 3m to good effect.

In 4 games he has 1 blank and people are shipping him out, that tells you what a player he is, im keeping him even with mane, he's due a haul, proven record against big teams and liverpool cant afford to bench im right now with sharing 1st place and trying to get separated

No-one is due a haul. Salah has been getting the chances and missing them. 4 big chances missed this season - only Callum Wilson has more.

Just as people are being cautious with Kane and waiting until he hits peak form, some are reaching the same conclusion with Salah.

And with those 4 big chances missed he still had: 8, 9, 8, 2. Imagine when he actually starts not to miss them, unless you assume this will happen to him all season long, that he suddenly lost his touch

But that's the point, he isn't hauling like last season and you're spending 13m of your squad budget on him.

Mané has 16, 10, 3, 10 btw. Based on his Premier League PPG history, he's equally a viable captain pick when fit.

This is the proper way to play the game. Salah is underperforming in fpl, but he had the same problem at the start of the last season. He got a lot of chances he failed to convert and soon started firing to an extent he became the best fantasy player in the league. Your predictions are way off, not backed up by statistics, where by the way “player X” (Mane) is still far behind Salah.

Mane's numbers have collapsed last 2 as Bobby's have soared. Mo's collapsed too but in 70'. I think many are just waiting for more evidence before dumping/keeping.

          Which numbers, Netley?

The goal threat & assist threat numbers, Mane's have collapsed last 2 but Bobby's have soared. Could just be happenstance though.

Have just taken a look. Yep, Mané's have definitely dropped but then, Liverpool did play West Ham first game 😉

Very small small sample size this season, but from what I've seen Salah is drifting wider right on the counter attack as the target for the immediate out ball, before tapping it back to Firmino, Milner/Henderson for the through ball to Mané.

Once Liverpool are in 'steady' possession or when teams park the bus and there's no space in behind, Salah is much the greater threat as Mané is drifting deeper in order to pick up the ball and run with it. Even so, the stats can be misleading as touches in the penalty area aren't so great an indicator if the ball is then squared to Mané at the back post.

In any case, I really don't want this to become a Mané v Salah debate. Price the same or similar, most would go with Salah. It's all about having viable alternative captain options (we do at present) and how we use that additional budget.

So are you getting Salah in now? My guess is you're switching out the under-performing players for ones that are in form.

No-one can pick all the players that started the season well without a massive dose of luck!

Sorry I missed this earlier - in case you still read half a day later:

No, not getting Salah now with these fixtures. Basically in the beginning of the season the dilemma was between Salah/Mitrovic and Sanchez/Aubameyang. I went for the latter pair. The upside was I was able to easily upgrade Sanchez to Hazard. I do still want Mitrovic but it's not time to downgrade Aubameyang yet (and if I do, it might be for Lacazette if he's nailed).

If I do get Salah in the future, right now the obvious move would be Mane and Aubameyang to Salah and Mitrovic, or something along those lines.

Think you're overanalysing. I have Salah. He has 2G/2A from 4 games and supportive stats. If/when stats and points collapse vs alternatives I'll sell him. Until then I won't. Don't mind what others do.

Fair enough. I haven't over analysed Salah per se, I've just commented on how I see people respond to Salah non-ownership.

I think you're confusing individual rationale or justification with efforts to undermine others' rationale or justification. They're not the same thing. In your example of a RMT, how does a considered Salah owner/nonowner respond except via some bias. That doesn't necessarily infer forewarning or security blanket or maverick or ignorance etc. Only a difference of opinion, and perhaps a very considered one.

If you're really saying there's more agressive or passive-aggressive push back from both sides then yes I'd agree, but it's increasingly common here in general.

No Salah working well for me.

FPL is all about timing (as are lots of things in life). Get on Salah when he hauls and justifies his price and get off him when he is off form. At present I think getting Salah from GW 9 onwards is the way to go.

One thing about FPL is you have to be open minded. You need to be able to envisage scenarios where Salah scores no points and Troy Deeney scores a hat-trick. Then narrow down all the possibilities to what you personally feel is the right decision.

Having a blinkered view (i.e. you should always have Salah, you should never own Lukaku etc.) is not the way to approach the game IMO.

Agree with all general points. It's hard to ride all the waves though, and some players are very dependable to hold long term. That's why it helps to have some season keepers / longer term options, especially if a good captain choice, unless their form is particularly bad and opportunity cost too high.

Salah has been a stable source of returns rather than a hauler. He got an attacking return most gameweeks last season and has returned 3 of 4 games this season, which means it's not obvious when he is in/out of form, so there's a risk you take him out after 1 or 2 bad games and he starts returning again the next week.

I've had Salah since the start and sticking. But I can see why some people are choosing Mane over him. Salah performed amazingly well last season regardless of the form that the rest of the team were in, and he became the focal point. I'd argue Mane depends more on service so he benefits enormously from Liverpool's improved squad, despite coming in at the same price as last season. Liverpool can be less dependent on Salah who is way more expensive and heavily marked.

Basically, we should have started with both players! Hence why I'm still haunted by my drunken decision to switch Mane and Richarlison out for Mahrez and Bernardo on deadline day.

Yes, starting with both Salah and Mané would definitely have paid dividends. I'm still traumatised by switchiing Mané and Aguero to Mahrez and Firmino while on the train to Old Trafford. It should've been Alexis I was getting rid of!!

Liverpool and Man City are likely to score the most goals this season, again. I don't think we can go wrong by owning their key assets. It's interesting how people respond to fixture changes though - really intrigued to see how Liverpool do with their PL & CL fixture run.

I feel your pain! In future I'm hopefully avoiding pubs and clubs on deadline day or the night before...

The fixtures look brutal but I don't see why everyone is shipping players like Mane. He's too good to lose, especially if value is locked up. I'm questioning my own decision to go with D Silva rather than upgrading him to Mane, it could prove decisive for my season.

The amount of cheap forwards (Below 7 million) is so much better than last season. I mean, Joselu was the go-to cheapie.

This for me is what makes 3-4-3 the ideal formation as Kamara is useless and Hoj/Billing are not.

              thoughts on this WC team:

              Mccarthy Patricio
              Robbo Alonso Mendy Shaw WB
Salah Hazard Maddison (Rich in 2 weeks) Fraser Ward
              Aguero Wilson Mitro

Obvs missing a few explosive players like Mane, Sterling, Lukaku

Which fantastic foursome do you prefer to fill the gaps on my WC?

              Patricio / Foster
              Mendy / Alonso / XXXX / XXXX / AWB
              Mane / Hazard / Maddison / Fraser / XXXX
              Aguero / Lacazette / XXXX

A - Shaw, Holebas, Schurrle & Jimenez (gives strong bench options with big UCL rotation issues incoming could be vital?...and also very flexible in formation).

B - Robertson, Bennett, Holbjerg, Mitrovic (very weak bench could prove big issue but premium def in Robbo plus Mitro up top).

              Any thoughts much appreciated, thanks.

Robbo and Mitro sounds much stronger than Shaw Jiminez. If u didn't have maddison you could go laca to the more nailed Vardy to free up 0.6 to help the bench

The numbers look good for that "very weak bench" of B. Sometimes we are guilty of equating base cost with rubbish, in this case the 'free' players are producing good underlying stats. B

Thanks all for replies, been on B for some time but always good to get others opinions on new plains of thought, i guess you're right Netley bench of 'B' is actually better than it looks and also probably better to get Robbo & Mitrovic who are both likely season keepers?

Well AWB's assist threat is rocketing, Bennett's bps is on a par with nearly all of his Wolves def peers and Hoj's assist/goal threat numbers are more like a 6m atm 😆 Gift horses mate.

Not sure they're season keepers but right now Robbo & Mitro look as good as anyone for that dosh.

                      Yes, they're on FPL - Statistics > (sorted by) > Creativity(assist threat) & Threat(goal threat)

They do it all for you, then give a number for each game.

Kun, it's tight but Fulham are an attacking side and could leave gaping holes at the back? 60/40 in Kun's favour for me.

Don’t think it’s anything to do with how cheap a striker is but who is at the spearhead of a team’s attack and the form of the player and the form of the team.

I’m sure the stats will speak for themselves.

Hasn’t Rich still got one game ban to go. I’d swap him out and bring him in GW6

How’s this non WC team looking? Transfers done for GW5.

                Foster/Fab
                Alonso, Robbo, Mendy, Holebas, AWB
                Salah, Mane, Bilva, Pedro, Neves
                Aguero, Mitrovic, Kamara

I’m thinking Bilva, Kamara and the keepers need future work.

Miraculously in the top 10k, hoping to stay there. Kane, Moura and Hazzard worry me.

Try and stay ahead of the points curve.

Alonso may be enough Chelsea so Pedro and Bilva could go to shift funds to get Spurs cover. Moura could end up being that bandwagon I watch and regret.

Keeperwise I have no idea, I guess watch the mid table clean sheets and find a decent rotation.

A Kun injury or rotation may change everything.

What are Mkhitaryan owners doing? I've got 2ft and 0itb to play with but unsure what to do. I've already got Pedro. Any thoughts?

Benching this week unless something comes up to suggest he'll start, then selling in a double switch.

I had other fires to put out this week but most likely getting rid of him or B Silva after next GW depending on rotation / performance.

I'm considering Pereya or Richalison as a replacement for either.

Worth downgrading Auba to get in Alonso for a hit? I can't believe I'm considering blowing up my team structure to squeeze in a defender.

Alonso posted a goal threat of 51 v bou. An astonishing number when you compare it with Kun's 39 v new and Auba's season high of 32 v che.

Holding until I get news Friday or Saturday. If he is out, I may transfer for Vardy or bench.
