Knee injury taints Arnautovic display as Walcott blanks again

Our coverage of the weekend’s matches continues with a look back at the events at Goodison Park, where West Ham United ran out surprise 3-1 winners to lift themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table.

Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m) served another reminder of his appeal as a mid-priced Fantasy Premier League forward despite the Hammers’ poor run of form and fixtures, though the Austrian limped from the field just after the hour mark with a knee injury that the striker himself said is “hurting a little bit”.

Theo Walcott (£6.7m) won his own fitness battle to take his place in Marco Silva’s starting XI, but the Everton winger left his legions of FPL owners disappointed for the second Gameweek in a row with another blank.

Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m) was instead the headline-making act on Merseyside, scoring the Hammers’ opening two goals on his first league start for his new employers.

Everton 1-3 West Ham United

  • Goals: Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) | Andriy Yarmolenko (£6.8m) x2, Marko Arnautovic (£7.0m)
  • Assists: Jonjoe Kenny (£4.3m) | Marko Arnautovic, Mark Noble (£4.9m), Pedro Obiang (£4.4m)

The debate over form versus fixtures has reared its head in recent weeks, most notably when discussing which/how many Liverpool assets are necessary for the Reds’ current tricky sequence of matches.

Marko Arnautovic’s 12-point haul at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon was a reminder of his own ability to accrue points no matter how “difficult” the fixture.

The Austrian delivered attacking returns in away matches against Chelsea and Arsenal in the final six Gamweeks of 2017/18 and his rate of goal involvements per minute was actually superior on the road last season.

That Arnautovic is ranked joint-third for points among FPL forwards this campaign – only the more-heralded Sergio Aguero (£11.4m) and Aleksandar Mitrovic (£6.8m) are ahead of him – despite playing in a side that was pointless before Gameweek 5 and languishing near the bottom of our Season Ticker is a testament to his Fantasy appeal.

Granted, Arnautovic will seldom come up against a defence as obliging as Everton’s. Beset by injury problems and without Seamus Coleman (£5.3m), Yerry Mina (£5.4m) and Michael Keane (£4.9m), the Toffees were cut open time and time again by the Hammers on the counter-attack.

The Merseyside club are one of five top-flight teams without a clean sheet this season and indeed a side managed by Marco Silva hasn’t recorded a shut-out in 16 matches.

Mason Holgate (£4.5m) and Kurt Zouma (£5.0m) had a particularly torrid afternoon at centre-back, the pair being all-too-easily bypassed by a looping Pedro Obiang (£4.4m) through-ball that set Arnautovic free for West Ham’s opener – the former Stoke City man unselfishly squaring for Yarmolenko to finish from close range.

Obiang and Arnautovic combined nicely for West Ham’s third goal, with Holgate again culpable as Arnautovic finished the one-two by prodding past Jordan Pickford (£5.0m).

Pickford had been partly responsible for Yarmolenko and West Ham’s second strike, with the Ukrainian winger capitalising on some poor distribution from the England goalkeeper to curl home the goal of the match.

When asked about the extent of his injury, Arnautovic said:

I don’t know. We have to check now, it’s not my calf, it’s behind my knee. It is hurting a little bit. We are checking this week how it is going and we will see.

The positive signs were that Arnautovic was able to walk from the field and put weight on his affected knee but the coming days should tell us if the injury is anything other than minor. A spell on the sidelines would be a blow to the Hammers given Arnautovic’s talismanic role: the Austrian has been directly involved in four of West Ham’s five goals this season and seven of their last ten stretching back to the end of 2017/18.

From a Fantasy perspective, Arnautovic’s returns might have been considered fortuitous: his goal and assist coming from just one attempt on goal and a solitary key pass. Only two strikers have had more penalty box touches than Arnautovic over the course of the season, however, and the West Ham forward is averaging a chance more often than the likes of Wilfried Zaha (£7.0m), Cenk Tosun (£6.9m), Callum Wilson (£6.3m) and Josh King (£6.3m) in the mid-price bracket.

Yarmolenko’s brace also came from the Ukrainian’s only two shots on goal, with the former Borussia Dortmund and Dynamo Kyiv winger not creating a single chance all match.

The knee-jerk reaction to Yarmolenko’s performance in FPL has been sensibly modest, with less than 4,000 managers snapping him up at the time of writing, and much more evidence will be required before we talk about him as a viable mid-price midfield option.

The Hammers’ summer signing looks to have nailed his place on the flank in the short term at least, with Pellegrini having this to say about the Ukrainian wide-man and his patient wait for a first start:

He arrived late in the pre-season with us and that’s why we didn’t start him in the Premier League so far, because he needed to improve a lot with the pace.

He has a lot of quality and he has demonstrated that in every game, but he was not ready to play in the Premier League after he just arrived.

We were patient with him, talking with him, working with him and I’m very happy for him that today when I thought he was ready he demonstrated it.

Yarmolenko was one of six changes made by Pellegrini to his starting XI, with the all-new central midfield three of Obiang, Mark Noble (£4.9m) and “out of position” Declan Rice (£4.4m) impressing in the engine room. Pablo Zabaleta (£4.3m) and Arthur Masuaku (£4.5m) also returned at full-back.

Silva meanwhile made only two alterations to his line-up, with Jonjoe Kenny (£4.3m) replacing Coleman at right-back and Idrissa Gueye (£4.9m) returning from injury to oust Tom Davies (£5.4m) from the double-pivot.

Theo Walcott also won his fitness race to be included in the Everton starting XI, although his remaining owners (Walcott was the second-most-sold player of Gameweek 5) might have wished he hadn’t after another blank in which he had only one shot on goal and didn’t create a single chance.

Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m) headed in Everton’s only goal of the match just before half-time, with the Icelandic midfielder nodding home Kenny’s cross – the second successive season in which the 21-year-old full-back has provided an assist in a home match against West Ham.

Kenny and Lucas Digne (£4.8m) were rare bright sparks on an otherwise wretched afternoon for Everton, with both providing some dangerous deliveries from the flank: Digne denied two assists when the disappointing Tosun could only head his pinpoint cross straight at Lukasz Fabianski (£4.5m) before substitute Oumar Niasse (£5.3m) blazed another Digne centre against the bar.

Digne created more big chances, made more key passes and sent over more crosses than any player on show at Goodison Park yesterday, with only Sigurdsson having more shots than the Everton left-back. Digne was also prominent at set-piece situations, taking both indirect and direct free-kicks.

Available for only £4.8m, he would ordinarily be a defender to consider given his underlying attacking statistics – but Everton’s dearth of clean sheets and the continual risk of rotation with Leighton Baines (£5.4m) means he remains far down on the watchlist.

Sigurdsson’s sudden propensity to open fire bucked the trend of the season so far, with five of the Icelandic midfielder’s seven shots in 2018/19 coming on Sunday afternoon.

Bernard (£5.9m) showed glimpses of promise after his introduction on the left flank just before the break, with Silva switching from a 4-2-3-1 to a 4-4-2 in a bid to peg back the Hammers’ two-goal advantage.

Richarlison (£6.6m) served out the final match of his suspension and, along with Bernard, will now come into contention for the trip to Arsenal in Gameweek 5 – Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.4m) and even Walcott’s starting places could be at some risk at the Emirates next weekend.

Everton (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Kenny, Holgate, Zouma, Digne; Gueye, Schneiderlin (Bernard 44′); Walcott (Lookman 77′), Sigurdsson, Calvert-Lewin; Tosun (Niasse 69′)

West Ham United (4-3-3): Fabianski; Zabaleta, Balbuena, Diop, Masuaku; Noble (Sanchez 71′), Rice, Obiang; Yarmolenko (Snodgrass 82′), Anderson, Arnautovic (Antonio 64′)

Wondering if anyone chnaged their 'normal' fpl strategies going into this season?
I went for a 'strong 11' (more like 9) team and I've got off to my best start in a long time. Top 29K before saints game tonight (Good for me at least).

I've always tried to have at least 1 decentish bench sub to come in or use to rotate formation, fixtures etc with playing players for the rest. I did try get a playing bench in the price bracket at the time but rotation killed that (which I kind of expected for at least 3/4 of them)

    My team is:
    Fabianski - Stekelenburg
Bennet - Alonso (Just got him this week) - Mendy - Wan Bissaka - Peltier
    Hazard - Salah - Walcott - Fraser - Odoi
    Aguero - Aubameyang - Kamara

Scored 81 this week with no Mendy or bench player coming in for him - which I suppose is the downside for this strategy but I've still been scoring well every week.
Still have my wildcard and no hits taken to this point.

Just goes to show that there are many strategies to play this game each with their own risk/reward.
Curious to know how the Salah -less teams have been going to now?
I imagine not too bad especially if you went Mane instead?

      I've changed a few things

      1. Gone with my head not my heart by having 0 man United players.

      2. Focused on whole squad not just bare 11 as rotation killed me last season

      3. Not taken unnecessary hits

      4. Avoided bandwagon trolls in the past like Walcott mkhi (with the exception of hazard this week)

Ranked between 9k to currently lowest of 30k

Been a lot more patient with poor performers. Paid dividends this week with King, and hoping it will do over the next couple with Bilva.

Earlier seasons I would have been taking -4s early to impulsively jump on someone I wanted because they had got points that week, then get annoyed that someone I had sold ended up returning.

Big lesson learned so far - You don't have to spend all of your money!

Did a mistake, gone for Sanchez instead of Mane first two gameweeks. The only reason was I had extra 1.0 itb with Mane on board. That costed me top 10k atm. Now im on 3.2 itb and I won't take a hit just to spend it.

Usually I opt for a very top heavy team with a few cheap options in mid and a cheap defence.
This year I’ve only gone for Salah and Aguero as premium options this year with Mendy, Robbo and Alonso (gw3) in defence and generally spreading the funds.
Still had a relatively good start at 43k.
Also, I usually ignore newly promoted sides, but Pat + Doherty double up are starting to pay dividends rotating with Hen + AWB.

In the hope that Aguero and Mendy look fit to continue I am toying with the idea of this - how silly/ genius is this?:

Wally, Pedro, Robertson > Hazard, Billing, Boly/ Doherty (-8)
    Would give me this:

    Foster
    Alonso, Mendy, PVA, AWB
    Salah, Mané, Hazard, Hughes
    Aguero, Wilson
    (Fab) (Boly/ Doherty, Billing, Kamara)

Alternatives are just doing Wally > Fraser or saving FT but where's the fun in that!

What do you think?? A couple of price drops and I'd be priced out of making the move. Clearly losing Robbo not the best but he finances having that amazing mid set-up and is heading into a tough patch after this GW

    Hennessey (Hart)
    Shaw - Mendy - Robertson (Wan-Bissaka - Bednarek)
    Salah - B.Silva - Hazard - Ghezzal - Mhkitaryan
    Mitrovic - Aubameyang (Kamara)

    0.5 ITB 1 FT

    a) Mhkitaryan -> Richarlison/Fraser and Aubameyang -> Lukaku (-4 hit)

Do you fancy King or Wilson? Which do you prefer? What are your thoughts on Mitrovic, Arnautovic, and Zaha? Is Ings an option despite missing the Liverpool game? What have you seen from these players that encourages or discourages you?

And that ultimately adds to his xG (something like 0.7 I believe, can't find the actual score). Its just another reason his statistics look better than they really are.

I just don't think hes a good finisher. Can understand why you would jump on as he is involved so much in Bournemouths good play right now. Once the fixtures turn I can see him drying up. Fraser would be my number one shout in their team. Arnie and Mitrovic are the talisman worth going after, everything goes through them in their teams

Jiminez is a really interesting one.

The start of the season has been very interesting, as it has provided us with a lot of budget and mid priced striker options - especially compared to last year.
I think most of the ones you mention are good options - plus I think we should also consider Jiminez. Cheap, nailed and playing for a Wolves side that looks like improving and could be a very good option at 5.5m.

Its between Zaha and Mitro for me.
            - As I have Fraser who is great at that price dont want to fouble Bou attack.
            - Arnie is the one I have now but he has same injury as before so may be a problem and those fix makes me think he will be good pick but later.
            - Ings cant play Pool and has Chelsea so not ideal
            - Jimenez is cheap and can be a good pick IF you need that money but for now its Zaha or Mitro for me.
            - Zaha can play a bit like a mid and collects YT but is their best player, a talisman and have nice fixtures
            - Mitrovic is a bit more explosive, has great stats, plays proper striker and got pens. Fix a bit worse than Zaha but he may look as the best pick.

            Do you agree?

I'm pretty well with you on this.

I've had Mitro from the start and won't be losing him - he looks great and can grab a goal in any game. Fraser I've just brought in on a WC and won't be doubling.

I'll be shipping Ings, I haven't looked at Jimenez yet but I certainly will.

So it's mostly between Zaha and Arnautovic (or Lacazette, maybe even Lukaku) for the other spot alongside Aguero and Mitro

I agree with the majority and wish to add:
              1. It's clear that Palace are more reliant on Zaha than Fulham are on Mitro which makes the former more appealing to me. Palace haven't won with Zaha in how many games again? The majority of goals and assists go through him.

              2. Palace are a better team than Fulham with better fixtures in the next 4.
              3. After those 4 fixtures, i'd be more inclined to do Zaha>Arnie for the same reasons above really.

          1) King for form, fixtures (and penalties over Wilson)
          2) Mitrovic's form and talisman status

From gameweek 10 on Arnautovic is the one for me, the fixtures are ideal and I think given some time Pellegrini is going to get lots of goals out of his front three.

Have Zaha and Arnie since gw1 and can't really complain as their returns have been solid.

Arnie's fixtures are taking a turn and he seems to have re injured his knee which may be a problem for him going forward.

Zaha seems to pick up yellows, refs don't like him and his post match interview was a bit worrying so I think I'll be losing him too.

This week probably Arnie to Wilson or Mitro.

Maybe Zaha to Arnie GW 10 then when the fixtures turn good for West ham and bad for Palace

There's arguably not even spaces for all the strikers

Mitro, Raul, Arnie, Wilson are my favourite 4. Tempted to go without a premium striker and get 3 of the above plus Sterling/Haz/Salah

Love Arnautovic as a player and an FPL asset, but going to give him a few weeks "rest" until they play Cardiff at home - which is quite a way down the road but their upcoming fixtures are horrible + he has clearly got a minor issue with his fitness which will need to be managed.

Being a fixtures + stats person who already owns Josh King, I think Mitrovic has to be the replacement. Arsenal & Everton games look tough on paper but I can see him scoring in those given the defensive frailties of both, and WAT/car/BOU/hud/SOU in the next 8 gameweeks looks great.

Zaha's doing the same as he did to me last season - goals accompanied by yellow cards and falling away in the BPS. Palace's next 4 games are good, but then tails away while Bournemouth & Fulham's favourable fixture run carries on.

As I say, I have Josh King. I kind of wish he was Wilson though... I think CW will keep outscoring him.

TL:DR My wildcard front three would be Aguero - Mitrovic - Wilson.

Zaha is what, 3 goals in 3 away games? I like the Zaha > Arnautovic move for GW10 but planned transfers rarely work for me

              Thanks!

Yeah 3 from 3 away games. He's been impressive & I really like him as a player, but I'm also a tiny bit worried about this 'I need protection' thing. I don't think he's necessarily incorrect to say it, but it could get to a point in his own head where he boils over due to a tackle and gets a red for reacting / similar.

Granted, Mitrovic could easily do the same out of nowhere!

Likewise RE planned transfers - best to stay flexible or "yogic" as Joe would say. Just good to be aware of when fixtures turn, and think through the possible routes into those sides.

Have had King and Zaha from the start and can't really complain with their production so far! Zaha a definite keeper for the next 4 plum fixtures imo.

King v Wilson is a tough one as all the open play chances seem to fall to Wilson. Think Fraser is the best option from Bournemouth at a cheaper price.

Mitro looks good and I'm definitely eying him up as a King replacement long term.

Jimenez and Ings look decent cheap options but no point getting either in for next week.

In short loads of fantastic options out there so 3 up top still looks strong!

I'm currently weighing up whether to go three up top or five in midfield; and tending towards the latter. I suspect Richarlison/Maddison will outscore a £7m striker.

Mitro is the best option by a mile.Arnie will be after next 4 fixtures King 2nd best option as he is a better finisher than wilson.Wilson is just a poor finisher simple as that.king is a better technical and intelligent player .Zaha also great option and is a second best option with king i think

Currently on a WC with Aguero, Mitro and Ings. Didn’t transfer Ings out as I was waiting for his .1 rise, but now I’m thinking of keeping.

With all the rotation going on, I think having a decent bench is vital. With Ings, I can get Richarlison too whereas if I get Zaha I’d have to get a 4.5 mid.

Can afford to bench Ings this week too and in the long run I think him and Rich will outscore Zaha + a 4.5. He’s a brilliant price for a starting striker who has proven he can score in the past.

          1. Arnie, set and forget and Talisman with a huge T. Only Salah have got more goals/assists in 2018, and he's only 7.0m... And on pens. Don't care about the fixtures.

          2. Mitrovic. Great stats and Fulham are really going for it.

Lots of other good options as well. The cheap strikers are finally back in business!

People seem to be fancying King over Wilson after scoring again this week. But the key stats are still in Wilson’s favour in my opinion...

          More shots per min
          Higher shot accuracy
          More chances created per min
          Cheaper
          Higher goal involvement

Where Wilson falls down is his...

          Fewer goals per min
          Fewer passes received per min
          Not on penalties
          Lower BBPS

Granted being on penalties is a big plus but they don’t happen all the time and both of Kings goals have come from penalties not open play explaining his higher goal involvement.

Fraser’s stats on the other hand look sexy and beat Wilson’s in all key categories except shots per min. I wish I owned him

Basic question: why have three forwards when forwards, as a group, are not providing good statistical “Value” at the moment?

Look at the FPL "Value (season)" stats and judge for yourself. Datasets for last season are also widely available on the Internet.

Last 2 seasons this have been true, this season is different at least so far. They dont have to perform over the whole season either if you can get a good spell out of the ones you get in.

"...this season is different ...". Potentially, yes, it may prove to be the case. As you point out, however, if you look at the data set for this year and last it suggests that in purely "Value" terms (with no allowance made for captaincy, rotation, ...) players should put their money in their 15 in the following order:
              1. Goalkeepers
              2. Defenders and Midfielders
              3. Forwards

This is why I usually play a defence & midfield heavy team. The assist and clean sheet points add up for both budget and premium players.

Last season the budget strikers were inconsistent and most teams in the league went through good and bad spells, which were hard to time. What I think is different now is that many budget forwards are looking like they can deliver consistently over the medium to long term. We were aware of Arnie and Zaha's quality before this season started, so no surprises there. Mitro looks key to an attacking team and posting great stats, and Bournemouth and Watford are on great goal scoring form. If they keep it up and don't regress like budget players usually do, there will be value there. Plenty to switch to otherwise (at the moment).

Because where theres smoke theres fire.
At the moment they ARE providing GREAT statistical value. But as you've shown with the comments below, your mostly looking at the past to prove your point. The fact is, that theres currently 5 sub 7m strikers providing averages greater than 5pts pr game. Also a couple between 4-5pts pr game.

Where theres smoke....: if a number of these players actually "come good", meaning their ppg dont regress to much, we might have 2-4 budgetstrikers scoring 150-200pts this season. We've seen cheap strikers do this before, so its not unheard of. If this happens, it will need to be a very strange season for these players to be deemed low value.

I've spent a lot of time looking at points per million over the last couple of seasons, and your point is valid. But remember that no season is similar. Those budgetplayers, providing both good points and extra cash to spend might emerge in all areas of the pitch.

Think Arnie is the best option long term if injury free. Followed closely by Mitrovic.

Ings and Jimenez both good considering their relative cheapness.

Zaha flatters to decieve a bit imo - not on pens, rarely hauls, YC magnet, not many baps.

Not sure I see Bou continuing their good form - King not as dangerous from open play as Wilson but on pens makes it a tough decision.

Glen Murray is very under-rated on here

Arnie gets loads of goals and some assists. He's relatively fixture proof and independent of West ham (crap) form. Talisman status helps as well. Injuries are the problem, you never know whether to keep him...

Zaha is quality but his stats are never appealing and palace don't seem to be scoring many. I expect more from them though. His YC addiction ain't great.

Mitro's stats and importance to the team are impossible to ignore. Little cheaper than the above as well.

No idea what to expect from Bournemouth, I need to watch then play and make an eye test judgement because i struggle to believe in the stats they're posting.

Deeney a decent option as well, good stats and with Watford's confidence I can see his physical approach overwhelming some of the defences they face soon.

King. Been on him from the start based on the fact that he has 50% goal involvement on all BOU goals. On pens too.

Arne. Again had him from the start and now ranked third of all forwards. Only his injury might cause a rethink here.

The rest: Ings makes a strong case after last night's game both on price and form so he is worth waiting for after week 6.

Mitrovic - I just see him regressing. Lots of GAs but I still don't think he is good enough at this level.

Here is the right pecking order lads (providing they are all fit):

          Mitrovic > Arnie > Zaha > Ings > Wilson > King > Jiménez.
