Jimenez hits Wolves’ winner but Doherty and Jonny catch the eye

Our review of the weekend’s matches continues with a look back at the Sunday lunchtime kick-off at Molineux, where Wolves defeated Burnley 1-0.

Raul Jimenez (£5.5m) scored the hosts’ winner on the hour, slotting a Matt Doherty (£4.4m) cut-back past the otherwise impressive Joe Hart (£4.5m).

Doherty and fellow Wolves wing-back Jonny (£4.4m) stood out from a Fantasy perspective, with their performances suggesting they will rack up both clean sheets and attacking returns throughout the season.

Wolves 1-0 Burnley

  • Goal: Raul Jimenez (£5.5m)
  • Assist: Matt Doherty (£4.4m)

If there were any lingering doubts that Wolves could hold their own against the Premier League elite – if Burnley can be described as such – then the dominant display that last season’s Championship winners delivered in their victory over the Clarets on Sunday would have dispelled them.

The narrow scoreline failed to reflect the West Midlands club’s almost total dominance: no club have had more attempts on goal (30) or shots in the box (20) in Gameweek 5 so far, while only Manchester City registered more big chances and penalty box touches than Wolves across the weekend’s matches.

Speaking after the match, head coach Nuno Espirito Santo said:

Creating chances is difficult, but we produced a lot. We always have to improve. We’re going to work together to find the final touch. Talent exists; organisation we work on.

We scored one and that’s the most important. After we scored there was more space. The hard part of the game is to produce, to stay organised. And it’s two times we’ve kept a clean sheet.

The most important part is the way we played, how we controlled the game. It was a good game, no doubt about it.

After promising but understandably flawed displays in their first two matches of this season, Wolves had impressed in Gameweeks 3 and 4 with a draw against City and a last-gasp victory over West Ham United. Their performance against Sean Dyche’s troops was their best yet, however, with Wolves’ relentless pressing and direct attacking play unsettling Burnley throughout and reducing the visitors to a handful of limp attempts on goal.

Ruben Neves (£5.2m) is the only Wolves player who is owned by more than 10% of managers in Fantasy Premier League but based on what we saw at Molineux, Santo’s side are seriously under-represented in the Fantasy world.

Neves and Joao Moutinho (£5.4m) were a joy to behold in midfield. From a Fantasy perspective, their goal threat is somewhat limited: neither player had a single penalty box touch or shot from inside the Burnley area (as deep-lying “registas”, of course, this is not a failing on their part). Neves, as we have come to expect, was instead his usual trigger-happy self from distance.

Creatively though, the pair excelled. No player took more corner-kicks in Gameweek 5 than Moutinho, who appears to have the monopoly at indirect set-piece situations.

There wasn’t a single player in FPL who created more chances than Neves this weekend, meanwhile.

The Portuguese midfield pairing made more passes than any other player on show at Molineux and it was the two Wolves wing-backs who benefitted most from Neves and Moutinho’s raking diagonal balls out to the flank.

Jonny and Matt Doherty (£4.4m) were owned by no more 1% of FPL managers before kick-off, with the budget-freeing Ryan Bennett (£4.1m) the most popular route into this Wolves defence.

Doherty and Jonny though would appear to be the two names to monitor for those who like their defenders to come with an added goal threat.

No FPL defender registered more penalty box touches than Doherty (five) this weekend, with Jonny just one behind.

Both players had three attempts on goal (all of Jonny’s coming from inside the opposition area), with each registering one big chance apiece: Doherty being denied by Hart from close range and Jonny having his shot cleared from almost on the goal-line by James Tarkowski (£5.0m).

The pair also made three key passes each, with one of Doherty’s resulting in Jimenez’s match-winning strike.

The solidity of Bennett, Willy Boly (£4.5m), Conor Coady (£4.5m) and Rui Patricio (£4.5m) behind them suggests clean sheets will be a semi-regular occurrence too, with Burnley not allowed a single big chance during the match: only Liverpool have conceded fewer-clear cut opportunities than Wolves this season.

Boly’s recoveries, CBIs (Clearances, Blocks and Interceptions) and pass completion statistics earned him a bonus point, with the French centre-back also going close with a volley in the first half.

Wolves were profligate in front of goal, with Jimenez and especially his replacement Leo Bonatini (£4.9m) guilty of several glaring misses.

Jimenez at least keeps getting into himself into goalscoring positions (only two strikers have had more efforts on goal than the Mexican this season) and is the only genuine rival to Danny Ings (£5.7m) for those considering a budget second or third forward: Jimenez is the highest-scoring player in his position in the sub-£6.0m price bracket.

That Santo has named the same starting XI for five successive matches adds to Jimenez and his team-mates’ appeal as FPL assets.

Helder Costa (£4.9m) and Diogo Jota (£6.2m) had plenty of sights of goal, but neither player really convinces as a viable FPL midfield option at the moment despite their relative security in Santo’s line-up and their undoubted contributions to the Wolves effort on the whole.

From a Burnley point of view, there was little to cheer.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson (£5.9m) returned from injury to take his place on the left wing and was the Clarets’ main goal threat, registering more shots (none of which caused Patricio any bother) than any of his team-mates.

Matej Vydra (£5.9m) was a bright spark upon his introduction and the collective failings of Chris Wood (£6.4m), Sam Vokes (£5.4m) and Ashley Barnes (£5.7m) this season would perhaps suggest that the former Derby County striker isn’t too far away from a start in attack.

Vydra’s volleyed effort, which came within a whisker of being turned in by Jack Cork (£4.9m) at the far post, was the closest the visitors came to scoring on Sunday.

Dyche had rolled out a 4-4-2 for the first time in the league this season in a bid to pose more of an attacking threat, but the Burnley boss bemoaned his side’s lack of creativity in his post-match interview:

The better side won, first and foremost. But from our point of view the intention to play hard was there, and it was a poor goal.

We knew it would be a tough game against a team with a real connection and we did well in terms of our defensive play in terms of getting the blocks and clearances in, but we didn’t have enough on the offensive side of the game today.

That’s as a collective. There were too many misplaced passes and we gave the ball away cheaply far too many times and it’s like a fog has dropped onto the group.

Dyche was right to highlight the defensive contributions of his side, with Ben Mee (£5.0m) and especially Tarkowski throwing their bodies in the way as Wolves mounted attack after attack, but full-backs Phil Bardsley and Charlie Taylor (both £4.4m) had a torrid afternoon against Jonny, Doherty, Jota and Costa. Stephen Ward and Matthew Lowton (both £4.9m) may fancy their chances of a recall soon.

In the end, the Burnley backline was indebted to the efforts of Hart between the sticks, with the former Manchester City goalkeeper making several stops – the best of which was from Jimenez – to keep the scoreline respectable.

Hart has now made more saves than any other goalkeeper in FPL this season, simultaneously highlighting his own good form while drawing attention to the porous defence in front of him.

Burnley sit second in our Season Ticker for the next three matches, but with Dyche talking of a “fog” descending on the group, there seems little incentive in drafting in the Clarets’ FPL assets into our squads at this present time.

Wolves XI (3-4-3): Patricio; Bennett, Coady, Boly; Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny; Costa (Traore 66′), Jimenez (Bonatini 76′), Jota (Gibbs-White 88′)

Burnley XI (4-4-2): Hart; Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Taylor; Lennon, Hendrick (Westwood 79′), Cork, Gudmundsson; Barnes (Vydra 56′), Vokes (Wood 70′)

Is Richarlison definitely eligible to play on the 23rd?

Or does his ban mean, he's eligible to play from the 24th onwards?

    1 FT, £2.1m ITB

Thinking Walcott > Maddison for 1 GW (Walcott has ars, Maddison has HUD), then Maddison > Richarlison?

    Ederson
    Alonso Mendy Robertson
    Hazard Mane Fraser Walcott
    Aguero Zaha Wilson

    Subs: Hamer AWB Bennett Guendouzi

Other options including saving FT and maybe preparing to drop Robertson for their run after SOU, maybe for Shaw, and upgrading a forward to Firmino.

    What do you lot think?

So we thinking Walcott > Richarlison this week then? I do feel like for one week with these fixtures Maddison is the better pick but I'm going to get Richarlison in regardless I think.

Wow... 12/15 here (Mitro, Mkhi and Kante in place of Zaha, Wally, Guendouzi)

I'm wildcarding and am going for a budget friendly defence due to extremely good value out there

TAA, Shaw, Holebas, WanB, Bennett (or Doherty) - all cheap as chips
Arni - West Ham still have rubbish fixtures - I'd prefer mitrovic or Zaha or King

Your midfield is very weak and also a little light up front in my opinion and Hart I'd swap for Patricio

        My thinking was

Arnie not good fixtures. Zaha looked like a winger and i prefer Mitro. Have Wan b so felt that was enough Palace. Fraser flagged and chose Wilson as my Bournemouth player and chose Madison and Rich over Fraser. To be fair even if Fraser was not flagged probably would of still chosen those two.

Will wait for more news. If he is fit he stays for now. If injured will sell and get back after those hard fix.

Fixtures are irrelvant because he scores against anyone. Last year I got rid of him too soon because I thought he was injured.

I am certainly keeping...unless he is out long term.

      Yeah difficult situation.
He has proved that he is fixture proof with 4 returns in 360 minutes, but the niggling injuries are a bit of a worry...
If he seems fit, I am keeping for now

Thanks both. I know the sensible move is to sell him for these tough games, especially with this ongoing knee issue. But he's a fantasy darling for me in the way Maddison is to Az, or Lingard/Sanchez to Andy.

    Fairly happy with my GW
61 points with Ings left to play. Had 2FT transfers. Did the first one Saturday night Mkhi>Fraser gained .2 already.

    Teams looking like this
    Foster/Fab
    Mendy, TAA, Luiz, Boly, WB
    Hazard, Salah, Mane, Fraser, Hughes
    Aguero, Ings, Madine.

With Ings not playing next week I'm basically going to be left with Aguero as my only forward and I have a slight feeling he will be rested. Best replacement for Ings with with 7.1ITB is Wilson and Fraser to much ?
    A) Wilson
    B) Mitro
    C) Zaha
    D) Someone Else.

Or is it time to Ditch Aguero ? 5 games 4 without goals.

Aguero>Kane for example with the fixtures ahead

4 games out of 5 Without a goal against some poor teams as well. Was just thinking with champions League coming round he could be benched as well. Is that something we need in an 11.4 striker?

      I'm debating losing Kun too.
People say it's crazy but I don't see why. He failed to score against Wolves, Newcastle and Fulham...all games where he would be the obvious captain choice, always an injury worry...and now with CL starting he'll be a rotation risk too.

It sounds crazy when you think of losing Kun. But then as you just said all them games and no goals. And can easily see him being rested around champions League games. I might give him one more week and evaluate there. But that's only because ATM he is my only playing forward next week

I'm on my WC this week. So I need to make the decision if I'm going to stick with him or not. The problem is City are going to score so many goals this year you need to have someone from their attacking assets in the team, but it's knowing who. I'd probably punt of Sterling if I drop Kun.

    WC Dilemma...

    Hennessy - Foster
    Mendy - Alonso - Robbo - AWB - S.Cook
    Mane - Hazard - Lucas - Maddison - Fraser
    Lukaku - King - Zaha

Downgrading a keeper to Bettinelli would allow Aguero instead of Lukaku, but mean Kun rotation fear! Thoughts?

Like many others, the main causes of your dramatic rise in the rankings were your decisions to captain Hazard and start Fraser

Significant contributions from Maddison and Jimenez also helped of course, and the more template Aguero and Wan-Bissaka also did their bit, but your transfers were only a very minor part of your success.

Smooth: WC'd against all typical advice

You can get out a half decent 11, not enough info yet, save it for fixture swings etc etc. Brought in Doherty, Haz, Mad, Fraser and Wilson. Kept Salah. Hit 90, about 25 more than I would've got and set for a promising week next week.

Rough: Took the band off Hazard last minute and bottled AWB over Robbo.

60 odd points without Hazard was a good recovery. Playing the patient game really helps with Arne and King all in the big points.

Rough - just AWB's 9 points on the bench again. Looked at the Members' RMT tool to decide who to bench from Boly and Jorghinho (Jorghinho was benched) and should have used it for Jorghinho and AWB as well.

Alexander-Arnold getting subbed in the last minute with clean sheet still in tact then Liverpool conceding to wipe out the points for the rest of the defence. And auto-subbing into my team for Mendy 😎

        I sold Eriksen (assister)
He's getting Trent off the bench for Mendy (extra salt in the wound)

Smooth = Entering top 10K OR - Kept Fraser despite injury concern, TAA Cleanie off the bench for injured Mendy, Haz also in

      Smooth:

      - Against all my rules of playing a cheapo, I started AWB for the first time coz Huddersfield and it paid off. He accounted for a quarter of my points

      Rough:
      - 36 points! But Ings to play and Mitro 2 pointer coming in
      - Took a -4 hit to bring in Ramsey and Rico for Groß and Pereira
      - Chose Rico over Doherty as cover for ... wait for it ... Fraser
      - Was waiting one more week to see who out of Salah or Mane to ditch for Hazard
      - Took another -8 hit now to bring in Fraser, Hazard and Vardy for Salah, Pedro and Ings
      - Scared being a non-Salah owner

Smooth; brought in Fraser and played him, King rewarded my patience, Doherty finally got what he deserved. AWB in form bench is nice.
Rough; My Alonso curse strikes again.. against Cardiff home, so West ham away that´s going to be a big fat zero (yellow and conceding 2).. Mkhi was a mistake at this moment beeing. Pretty rough to have 4 points from Salah/Mané after that game vs Spurs..

Overall pretty satisfied with 67points which will be 76 when Bissaka points rolls in. Fairly happy with team atm, just those two City guys currently yellowed and Kun looks fine by the reports and Mendy is not a huge problem as i have decent back up if no show.

Smooth: Palace assets, Low percentage Zaha shot flies in and AWB clean sheet from what was a defensively poor Palace performance. Patricio performing for a very strong Wolves defence. 2 assists from Captain Aguero.

Rough: Robertson conceding in the final seconds. Mendy no show just gets me 1 point off the bench rather than the 6-9 pointers many others are getting.

The real kicker though was in midfield:

      Salah: xG 0.79 xA 0.27
      Mane: xG 0.52 xA 0.57
      B Silva: xG 0.70 xA 0.71

And 7 points in total between them for what were superb performances. Shame.

It’s been all smooth this week.

        Smooth:
        - My last 4 transfers in last 2 weeks for -8 paid off hugely (Hazard, Fraser, Dilva, Wilson).
        - AWB coming in for Mendy.
        - 79 points (with Ings still to play and without AWB points) moved me up to 6K. This is the earliest entry into top 10K for me so a bit encouraged for a top 1K finish after some years but still too early of course

        Rough:
        - Although I was seriously thinking that Hazard could explode, I was not brave enough to hand him the captaincy over Kun despite tinkering a lot within the week
        - Robbo conceding in 90+3 but not a big consequence given the huge ownership.

        Rough:
        A disastrous Saturday.
Brought in Holebas (0) for van Aanholt (6) instead of bringing in Hazard (20) for Salah or Mane (2 points each).
Benched Fraser (18) and Wan-Bissaka (9), who both stayed there when Mendy was surprisingly rested, because Jorginho (2) was ahead of them on my bench.
With a pathetic overnight score of 22 and an overnight game-week ranking of over five million, I crashed out of the top thousand and lost the lead in six mini-leagues (including Mods & Cons).

        Smooth:
        Fortunately Sunday went much better.
Arnautovic (12), Jimenez (8), Patricio (6) and Walcott (2) more than doubled my score.
Finished Sunday at 2,839th overall, regained the lead in on of mini-league and still in Last Man Standing - but the 30 points left on my bench would have made an excellent Bench Boost!

        More Rough:
Aguero, Mendy and Arnautovic are now all injury doubts.

        95 point GW! Very smooth.

A week after WC which defo paid off. Hazard captain, had Fraser too.

        Was 1.8M OR
Looking at a new OR of about 350k !!

Walcott disappointment and Holgate starter instead of AWB’s 9 points on the bench. Have already moved both out of my team!

      • stat

Rough: Got rid of Fraser as I thought he'd potentially be out for a while with a hamstring issue, and I was on my WC so I didn't want to keep any doubts who I would have potentially had to spend a FT on later.

Smooth: AWB autosubbing in for Mendy, and the players I brought in outscored the players I took out by 25 points (still have Elyounoussi to play). 82 points + Elyounoussi to play will probably take me into the Top 1K for the first time ever, even though I got rid of Fraser and didn't captain Hazard.

          Mostly smooth for me.
Nothing from Robertson, Alonso, and captain Salah,
But ended on 96-4 with returns from:
Hennessy, Sakho, Doherty, Hazard, Fraser, Fernandinho, Aguero, and King.

Rough - denied a CS (like so many others) by the late Spurs goal and then again for Cook from late Leicester goals. But at the start of the GW I did not want to use my WC so took a gamble on Zaha, Tomkins and Fraser. Not only did they play but CS for Tomkins & goals for Zaha and Fraser, really unexpected in Fraser's case given he's an assist machine.

I can add to my rough - first sub for Mendy Cook denied a CS with 2 minutes to go, 2nd sub Duffy weighs in with 12 points but stays firmly on that bench.

Had Fraser since GW1 - reports of a hamstring and not seen in training so I decided to sell for Pedro for a hit.

Minor recovery the other part of the hit was Doc in for VVD - 10 points of it back.

Smooth: Maddison scored late on for a few extra points.

Rough: Selling Zaha blocked me being able to brag about getting 7 baps from one match.

          Rough: Main rival captained Hazard

Rough: Quite a few injuries. Mendy and Shaw missing out in the same week with Bednarek as the fifth defender. Agüero (C) and Arnautovic subbed off early with injuries. Mkhi benched.

Smooth: 70 points all out. King and Arnautovic with double digit scores rewarded the reluctance to make transfers in the early weeks. Hennessey and AWB double up paid off. David Silva backed up his underlying stats. Robertson's late CS loss as my latest departure prevented another failed transfer short term.

Transferred Fraser in Sat morning. Needed to ship Wally for someone 5.6 or less to fund PVA to Alonso (2FT). Had Fraser lined up till his injury then fretted friday evening and Sat morning about the best alternative. Couldnt decide between Hughes & Neves, both of whom I'd have benched anyway, so just thought sod it, I'll still get Fraser, put him in my XI just in case, then I've got him in place for next week 🙂

Rough - almost (Almost!) took two hits to bring in Hazard on Friday nigth, but instead I swapped Fraser (with his apparent injury) for Pedro. As soon as I saw the massive points for Fraser and Hazard on Saturday I rage wildcarded to get Fraser back and bring in Haz. Also the minor injuries for Arnie and Kun have me worried about needing short-term replacements.

Smooth-ish (?) - Mendy replaced by AWB from the first spot on my bench; goal/assist from Arnie; two assists from Kun (but then leg injuries for both - see above).

Dropped 20K places but still atop one mini-league. Fastest start ever defintely slowing... so time to WC!

Also, using my only FT on Mkhi to Pedro, who blanked, but Willian produced instead.

          SMOOTH

Previously milling around at 750k OR, struggling to make headway, so played my WC ahead of GW4 with GW5 also in mind. Brought in the likes of Hazard and Fraser, got rid of Salah. I'm lucky he's blanked twice but it was a calculated gamble and it's paid off.

So, this week - 94 points. Ederson (7), AWB (9), Bennett (6), Fraser (18), Siggy who I've kept faith with since GW1 finally delivering (7), Hazard (20), Zaha (7), Aguero (C14). Just a really good week. Even had Duffy (12) marooned on my bench - just one of those weeks where most things went well.

          Up to 125k - a huge 625k rise.

          ROUGH

Kane and Walcott. Both on my chopping board with 2 FTs.

I take your point, but I'm asking for the 3 most 'essential', so you'll have to narrow down the template for me.

I was expecting Hazard, Alonso..and probably Aguero, but just curious.

              I get you.

And you're right, people will go for Haz, Alonso with maybe Kun but also Salah/Mane.
Defence will see a LIV player of your choice with Rich and Fraser added to the midfield options.

                Thanks my friend.
I think I would bring in Alonso and Hazard on my WC.
I'm seriously debating losing Kun though.
Salah annoyed the hell out of me watching him against Spurs. So Mane might be the option there, and I like TAA best of the Liverpool defence.
Fraser certainly makes a case for a starting 4th mid.

I actually rage WC'ed at half time of the 3 o'clock games on Saturday. I've never even made a rage transfer before so this was quite a leap for me.
I think I was tipped over the edge by making the forced King to Wilson transfer to avoid the price swing.
I'd watched Salah and Kane do nothing in the lunchtime game, so decided to just go for it.

Do you not consider Aguero to be too much of an injury/rotation risk now?...and in all honesty he's not doing as well as we'd expect, Huddersfield aside.

watching Liverpool vs Spurs and translate that vs defence consisting of D:Luiz and Marcos Alonso i´m not so quite sure Chelsea will be a tough game for them (the tough task probably more a matter of wearing their shooting boots on-) and City home, well history says Liverpool will score, and KDB still not available so i´d say advantage Liverpool.

Silva I love as a player, but I hate the city rotation nightmare. Pep keeps talking about playing Foden a lot this season, and KdB is rumoured to be coming back in time for the derby.
Fraser makes a strong case for a playing 4th mid.

Could work, but could be trouble if one of Fraser/Jimenez or Ings is going to be replaced as very few options in their price range? Ward is maybe a nice fifth mid if keeping his place, and after the horrible spell of fixtures is gone he could be the one to enable a 3-4-3 template, with a striker playing for albeit the weakest team as an OOP as a handy sub. As we saw vs Arsenal they are capable of scoring and as it is now i think there are more viable options in the 6-7m strikers department than in the same price range in midfield, not only points wise but in regards to nailedness in the teams, like KIng, Arnie, Zaha, Wilson, etc, while some of the midfielders in 6-7 is prone to rotation. But we´ll see, things changes fast in this game

Will expect a boost to Fraser after the next RMT update.

It's not bad. I watched the first series a while ago. It doesn't pull up any trees, but it's watchable.

I'm going back through Better Call Saul at the moment. Worth it if you haven't seen it.

                Enjoy it:)

Still can't beat The Wire for me, but Breaking Bad is definitely one of the rare "super shows".

It's really good isn't it - wasn't expecting to be that fussed, but well worth watching.

Ozark is excellent, surprised at the lukewarm response from other posters. Tense, beautifully shot, well written. Bateman in a career best performance. If you like a dark, atmospheric drama then you'll love it.
