Watchlist Update – Wolves defensive options climb rankings

We have updated the Watchlist after the important events of Gameweek 5.

There is a sizeable shift in the prospects of some goalkeepers, while the best budget defenders are still a little tricky to pin down.

We’ve gone over the changes we’ve made to those sections in this article, with midfielders and forwards to come later in the week.

Goalkeepers

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson (£5.6m) stays top of our Watchlist for now. The Brazilian registered his third return of the season against Fulham in Gameweek 5 and still has decent fixtures coming up. It’s a trip to Cardiff up next before Brighton come to the Etihad Stadium. Given his form and fixtures, he represents the best option among the premium ‘set and forgets’.

Alisson (£5.6m) stays second on our list although does lose the Unfavourable Fixtures factor with the Tottenham Hotspur clash out of the way. While Chelsea (away) and Man City (home) are still to come, those matches are bookended by Southampton (home) and Huddersfield (away). Liverpool remain the best side in the league for big chances conceded, and they were close to collecting a clean sheet at Wembley.

The headline riser from the goalkeeping department is Wolves man Rui Patricio (£4.5m), could be a potential bargain. He has climbed all the way to third after keeping back-to-back clean sheets. The reigning Championship title-winners have looked very organised at the back this season and rank very well for big chances allowed. A tough trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 6 is not too appealing but after that, there are four very favourable fixtures against Southampton (home), Crystal Palace (away), Watford (home) and Brighton (away).

Premium options David de Gea (£5.9m) and Kepa (£5.5m) are up next. The Manchester United man is in worse form but has better fixtures looking ahead, although the Chelsea custodian has collected more points in 2018/19.

The return of James Tomkins to the Crystal Palace starting XI boosts Wayne Hennessey (£4.5m) and sees him climb up to sixth place. The Eagles now have two clean sheets this season and have favourable fixtures on the horizon. Hennessey has already saved one penalty and has earned additional save points in all but one match. His rise up the list, combined with Patricio’s causes Asmir Begovic (£4.5m) to drop down.

Our new entry is Joe Hart (£4.5m) who creeps onto the list having made more saves than any other goalkeeper so far. Burnley have just one clean sheet this season but they face Cardiff (away) and Huddersfield (home) in their next three matches.

Kasper Schmeichel (£5.0m) and Petr Cech (£5.0m) complete the goalkeeper contingent based on their fixtures, although both are in pretty poor form. The Leicester man sits above Cech considering slightly more favourable matches as well as being more assured of a start, with Bernd Leno (£4.8m) still waiting in the Arsenal wings. Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) drops off the Watchlist this week with Southampton’s fixtures turning incredible sour.

Defenders

Despite losing the Favourable Fixtures factor and blanking in Gameweek 5, Marcos Alonso (£6.8m) stays top of the pile for defenders. The fact that has registered returns in four of the first five weeks show shows his quality. With Liverpool and Man United to come in the next four weeks, it’s hard to say his fixtures are appealing. But those matches are offset by trips to West Ham and Southampton.

Benjamin Mendy (£6.5m) keeps his fixtures factor but stays below Alonso on account of the doubt around his place in the side for Gameweek 6. He reportedly has a minor injury but the performance of Fabian Delph against Fulham could indicate a rotation risk once the Champions League gets up and running. That said, we can’t take anything away from his form.

Like Alisson, Andrew Robertson (£6.2m) loses the Unfavourable Fixtures factor with Spurs out of the way. However, with Chelsea and Man City still to come he can’t be rewarded with the Favourable Fixtures factor.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.1m) and Matt Doherty (£4.4m) come in as the most appealing budget options. The former has a great set of fixtures and stands to collect clean sheet points while the Wolves man is showing great attacking potential, also with an attractive run of matches after Man United in Gameweek 6.

Watford defender Jose Holebas (£4.8m) keeps his budget tag for now, even though he has risen to £4.8m. That’s because he can still offer a direct route into virtually every Watford set piece apart from penalties. A blank against Man United is not enough to remove his A for form.

Another set piece orientated defender is Spurs right-back Kieran Trippier (£6.0m). He is on corners and free-kicks and now has a very favourable run of games against Brighton (away), Huddersfield (away) and Cardiff (home). However, knowing Mauricio Pochettino as we do, Trippier has to retain the rotation risk factor.

Luke Shaw (£5.1m) loses his injury after Jose Mourinho revealed last week that he had recovered from the concussion suffered on England duty. We can’t bring ourselves to put a rotation risk on him just as Ashley Young‘s (£5.8m) appearance against Watford at the moment can be put down to Shaw missing the training for Gameweek 5 rather than a tactical choice. More weeks of both players being available will tell us more about the Man United left-back spot.

Ricardo Pereira (£5.1m) and Steve Cook (£4.6m) round off the defence section of the Watchlist. Both players have favourable fixtures upcoming but have struggled to pull in clean sheets thus far. Pereira’s advanced positioning and three assists suggest he has potential, while Cook is a threat from set pieces.

Shkodran Mustafi (£5.4m) comes off the Watchlist altogether. Arsenal have registered no clean sheets so far this season in spite of favourable fixtures. Anyone who wants to cover their defence while their appealing run of matches continues could turn to the much cheaper Cech.

Pva, Mendy, Pedro to hazard, Jonny and Doherty for a -8. Have wan b and Ederson to cover city and palace defence already and will only play 1 of Jonny or Doherty this week. Is it worth it or wait to see how long Mendy is out for as can afford 0.2 price rises

No way. Proper knee jerk that, Wolves have Man United up next.

I'd rather do Salah > Hazard for free if you want Hazard that badly.

Should do. Bit worrying how he's not linking up with Kane in the final third. He's being very selfish (which can be a good thing FPL wise).

Funny one this... I don't think selfish is the right word. He's a much smarter Ayer than he's been given credit for. His control and hold up play reminds me a bit of Berbatov.

Moura?? I don't see the similarity tbf, unless you're referring to his intelligence? Moura's electric while Berbatov was all about flicks , creativity and technique. A poor man's Bergkamp maybe 😉

I'll ask this another way.. who's worth sacrificing if any, for enabling hazard?

    A. Robbo
    B. Mendy

If mendy was sure to start then it's a no brainer imo.

If Mendy looks likely to start then lose Robertson.

Personally though I'd only lose him before one of Mane/Salah if you were planning on selling a second Liverpool player next week too. If you're planning on keeping two for the duration then I'd rather have Robertson + one of the mids.

I'm thinking of selling Robbo then buying back on wildcard in a few weeks time. If salah blanks this week then he's gone from my team and keeping Mané.

Yes but even with a reasonable probability curve some of those numbers seem complete bollocks. I can remember when RMT thought Solado was the future of the Premier League and while I really rate Salah is he actually some Behemoth who is so much better than everyone else.

Of course. Home/Away. Don't think Hazard will outscore Mané every game week from now on.

Wally and Aub to Mane and Lacazette -4 is exactly my thinking atm. But have 0.0 to do it and need to see team Thursday. Annoying.

Swapping the winger for the CF plus 1.5 to fund a good C this week is so enticing. But I also think Ozil could tick over nicely. I'm a sucker for a 3 bonus off 1 assist type mid. 8.3 is a bargain

I'm seriously considering Laca now, agreed their fixtures are great and although they haven't quite clicked yet this could be the start of their season, it's only a matter of time. Everton defence has not been good either. 4pm on a Sunday shouldn't influence me but I like the idea of a Laca captaincy punt when all else is done and dusted.

I think Ramsey will be the one but didn't get him in as I was worried by him playing both games for Wales plus Newcastle can be a tough but to crack.

absolutely no idea - if Kane/Tottenham don't sort it out and Sterling blanks/gets rotated there is a decent chance I just keep Salah.

Something like Salah & Arnie -> Sterling & Lacazette/Vardy could be a possibility, but I could easily just get Wilson/Zaha instead and keep Salah.

Thoughts on Wilson v Zaha (or even Mitrovic) for GW6 debate?

Personally going Zaha as have Fraser for Bourne cover... and Mitro i just dont fancy atm

Yeah. Zaha looked crucial in GW5 and could do damage at home to Newcastle in GW6. I've got him too and Fraser who to be ignored at your peril. Mitrovic is one of the most potent strikers in the game at the moment, no shame in blanking against City though.

it's a tough one, but Wilson has better fixtures for slightly longer and his stats are really good, he is also cheaper than Zaha and Bournemouth will generally score more goals than Palace I think, so I'd go with Wilson

Stats? You mean 'underlying stats', the ones that don't count towards your FFL team total. Wilson hasn't even double-digited this season and only returned six points in the last two games. Been built from owning him last season. Hurt prevents current inclusion.

Leaning towards saving. Fraser is tempting, but cant get both Fraser and Rich without chopping up the team atm, and Burnley away is never easy. Also own King and not sure about doubling on Bournmouth.

Remember that he has to be on fire to be worth the 13m price tag. He's not the 9.5m (?) bargain from last year.

                                Terrific point.

Last year we jumped off Kane in droves after his lackluster start. I'm on WC and currently don'r have Salah. Just like Kane, once he clicks and finds form you just bring him back.

Pretty poor it must be said.. gave the ball away cheaply, not 1 SOT. Sturridge more effective than he was.. quite alarming for me personally.

About the worst I've seen him in the Liverpool red tbh.

He looks quite frustrated with himself.

Probably just needs an early goal against Southampton to turn his fortunes around.

Walcott has to go before BSilva, i think, unless you want to do them both.

I'd get Maddison > Richarlison > Fraser, in that order.

Really don't like the Holebas pick.

You need Aguero, and Mitrovic is great value. Prioritise those two over Alonso.

Chilwell or Pereira are good defsive alternatives if you think the Bournemouth game was a blip for Leicester.

Why don’t you like Holebas ? A goal and 4assists already. He would rotate with Doherty and AWB.

Watford have had a lot of home fixtures due to their rotation with Spurs (Spurs more away fixtures while they get their new stadium sorted). So now Watford have more away fixtures to play.

Watford's fixture list is toughening too, and personally, I don't trust Holebas to avoid yellow and red cards.

Was Kane in poor form? The standard narrative seems to be that his stats were amazing all season prior to him actually performing as expected in terms of returns

no idea tbh - Salah is pretty much performing how he did at the start of last season imo (but people expect a lot more this time around) I put off getting him for ages because he missed a few sitters at the start and couldn't use his right foot to save his life.

I'm not really arsed about 'form' if he's getting a load of chances, a lot of his goals were tap-ins last season anyway, once they come so do the points

Kane was playing well so it was a bit of a risk. Blanking in those two home games was so frustrating for so many tho, including me. He made me pay (although I bought Eriksen).

Wouldn't say Salah is out of sorts. Top of goals imminent, top shots in the box, top for chances created. If his stats were down then, and only then, would I be concerned!

Agree with Anish above but Mendy isn't the priority if he's out injured. Selling Mkhi for Hazard is!

I will lose some money on Mendy pick. I have 0.1 clearence on
                        Salah to Hazard
                        Mkhtaryan to Sterling.

I will not lose any money on Mkhtaryan,Salah. And i can Get Salah back in gw8 wc.

Maddison or Richarlison if you could only have 1 or the other ?

I've gone with Maddison. Might do Pedro to Richarlison at a later date.

Really flying at the moment but feel i need to tweek my squad a little, but i will save this gameweek, i will set up like this,

                      Ederson
                      Wan Alonso Mendy
                      Salah(C) Hazard(vc) Lucas Fraser Maddison
                      Jimenez Aguero

                      Button Bellerin Duffy Kamara

then i will do Kamara and Bellerin to Ings and Bennett

Wan/Duffy/Bennett rotations work really well, Maddison and Lucas spots are flexible with players likes Richarlison and Ramsey to name a couple.

                      what you all think?

Surely start Bellerin over Jimenez or Lucas? Everton are terrible and Spurs don't look much better atm.

may be much different with Richarlison back and Arsenal struggling in defence at the moment, Lucas i'm really happy with the way he plays and he has a great fixture, but over Jimenez maybe but i think i would rather play the attacker, can see Utd going full att at home and maybe Wolves can get a goal.

I would get Jimenez instead of Ings. He has better fixtures, and even if he didn't, I'd back him over Ings. I wouldn't set your heart on Bellerin. He's pretty dog, and might prove it again this weekend, assuming he starts (which, granted, he is likely to).

Oops selling Bellerin. I'm going to take a complete U-turn and say it seems a bit of a waste of a FT to sell him. 😆 And why would you want the extra money on the bench? Is there a rotation strategy you're interested in?

Okay it's a good plan. Just a bit dull 😆 But my end up being the best option. Very early to be asking though 😉

ok it will be Kamara and Bellerin to Ings and Bennett, already have Jimenez

Try not to get Ings AND Jimenez as it leaves you nowhere to go if one of them loses form or is injured. They also don't rotate well which is frustating.

I'd get King or Mitrovic somehow.

Just watched the Liverpool game. Suddenly I'm kinda scared to captain Salah at the weekend now. I can see him getting "rested".
