We have revised our Watchlist player rankings for goalkeepers and defenders following Gameweek 6.

The Watchlist can be found in your sidebar on a desktop, or via your slide-in menu on mobile or tablet. It acts as a collection of our current thoughts on player selection for each position, also citing the factors that affect their ranking on the list.

As a general rule, we try to commit to just one player per position per club. However, in some cases we where we believe double-coverage is advisable, two players will be listed instead.

Goalkeepers

Ederson (ยฃ5.6m) remains top of the Watchlist after securing his third clean sheet and a fourth return of the campaign in Gameweek 6. However, the Manchester City man loses his Favourable Fixtures factor with two particularly tough matches in their next four. Home matches against Brighton and Burnley sit alongside trips to Liverpool and Tottenham.

Alisson (ยฃ5.6m) also retains his place in the Watchlist based on his impressive form. The Liverpool man has kept a clean sheet in all but two matches so far this season. Neither of the fixtures factors applies to Alisson though with two favourable matches against Huddersfield and Cardiff coming after Chelsea and Man City.

Rui Patrรญcio (ยฃ4.5m) and David de Gea (ยฃ5.9m) are two more non-movers on the Watchlist with no change in their respective form or quality of fixtures.

Kasper Schmeichel (ยฃ5.0m) and Petr Cech (ยฃ5.0m) appear next to reflect their continued good fixtures. Neither side has been particularly adept at keeping clean sheets in 2018/19, but they still have the potential. Schmeichel sits a little higher for an increased certainty of a start.

Joe Hart (ยฃ4.5m) is the first of two new inclusions in the Goalkeeper section of the Watchlist. His clean sheet against Bournemouth was his second of the season as the Clarets work towards improving on a poor start. Neither fixtures factor applies to him with Cardiff and Huddersfield up next but Man City and Chelsea after that.

Wayne Hennessey (ยฃ4.5m) drops a little bit despite recording a third clean sheet of the season in Gameweek 6. Just below him is our second new entry Martin Dubravka (ยฃ5.0m). Newcastle’s fixtures are on the turn now and apart from a trip to Manchester United in Gameweek 8, have several with clean sheet potential between now and Gameweek 19.

The popularity of Marcos Alonso (ยฃ6.9m) has pushed Kepa (ยฃ5.5m) off the Watchlist. The left-back is heavily owned for his offensive potential, and the current state of Chelsea’s fixtures do not encourage double-coverage of their defence.

Asmir Begovic (ยฃ4.5m) also dropped off after yet another match in which Bournemouth conceded more goals than their underlying numbers suggested they should have done.

Defenders

Alonso remains the top pick in defence. The Chelsea man has returned points in all but one match thus far in 2018/19, with three clean sheets, a goal and five assists to his name.

Kieran Trippier (ยฃ6.1m) has received a boost after registering his second assist of the season in Gameweek 6. He rises up the ranks as a result of other premium options facing injury and/or tough fixtures. Conversely, Spurs rank second for defence on our Season Ticker over the next six Gameweeks, and Trippier has a role in set pieces.

Andrew Robertson (ยฃ6.2m) just about holds onto his place but Trent Alexander-Arnold has run him close. The Scottish left-back has shown more consistent attacking returns over the course of the season so far, and we believe he is more likely to continue that during tough fixtures. Robertson is also more adept at picking up bonus points with Alexander-Arnold already earning three yellow cards this season.

Aymeric Laporte (ยฃ5.5m) takes Benjamin Mendy’s place on the Watchlist with a fair bit of uncertainty over the wing-back’s fitness. There is no return date on him currently and until we know more, we have to take him off. Laporte is the most reliable replacement considering he has played every minute of the league campaign so far and has some goal threat too.

Matt Doherty (ยฃ4.4m) tops off the best of the rest with Wolves’ defensive potential, appealing fixtures and his budget price. Jose Holebas (ยฃ4.9m) loses his price-related tag now that he has risen in price again but still stays in our thoughts with Watford’s relatively kind run and his role in set pieces. The Greek also receives a ‘Sus’ factor as he is one yellow card away from a one-match suspension.

Luke Shaw‘s (ยฃ5.1m) return to the Man United team keeps him in the Watchlist and he manages to lose his Rotation Risk factor. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (ยฃ4.3m) sits just below him. His slight increase in value has reduced his appeal a little for non-owners and only one of Crystal Palace’s next six fixtures looks like one where a clean sheet is likely for him.

DeAndre Yedlin (ยฃ4.5m) moves onto the defence Watchlist for the same reason as Dubravka. The American has a goal and an assist to his name so far this season and is the most assured of a start out of the budget options available at Newcastle. Jamaal Lascelles is arguably a bit too pricey while there is competition for places at left-back and centre-back between Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schรคr and Paul Dummett.

Ben Chilwell (ยฃ5.0m) takes the place of colleague Ricardo Pereira after the latter was dropped for Gameweek 6. Pereira was held accountable by the local press for the manner of Leicester’s heavy defeat to Bournemouth in Gameweek 5. It appears that manager Claude Puel was in agreement as he deployed Daniel Amartey in his stead against Huddersfield. Meanwhile, Chilwell held onto his place and continued to post encouraging underlying statistics.

For free I’d give it a punt. If for a hit I’d do it if I were to captain Kane, but I doubt you’d do that if you have Aguero?

I’m gonna WC Gameweek 9 (international break) seeing a nice fixture shift. Liverpool fixt improve, Palace is horrible etc...

So for a 2 week punt:

    Salah(che,MCI)+Arnautovic to Kane(hud,CAR)+Richarlison

With an eye for a differential captain in Kane.

    A) Stick with Mo Salah
    B) No Salah punt

The decision is more based on the worfulness of Cardiff and Huddersfield defensively than Spurs magic.

My question if you had Kane (hud) or Kun (bri) who would you captain??

    Bottomed/RP

Ben Chilwell is a great example of a player who continues to deliver great underlying stats that don't translate to tangible points.

Sold him for Doherty last week; at 5m he was a bit too expensive to be held on to.

I think it's still a little early to make that determination. 6 games is a small enough sample size that he could have just been unlucky so far. Still, I do agree that he's at an awkward price point. He has to be definitively better than the host of 4.5ers.

I think it's definitely too early to say he'll never notch goals/assists. He's only played ~2500 premier league minutes in his career. Maybe he just doesn't have the end product but there's at least a chance that he ends up with 2-4 goals and 5-7 assists this season.

Whether a Leicester defender is worth a .5 premium on Wolves/Newcastle etc. is the trickier question for me.

Anyone else in the situation where they have Mendy but have decent players on the bench so not a big deal? If I had no bench I would transfer him out immediately but it feels like Pereyra and AWB are good enough to come off the bench.

6m+ a tad too expensive for a defender to stay on the bench IMO plus too much uncertainty around this whole 'injury' scenario.

If you had him at 6m you lost 0.1 already so very easy decision imo to just wait for news, i got fed up with the silence and swapped him for trip last night due to the pending 0.2 price change (-0.1 & + 0.1). Not that happy with trip but it makes it easier since so many others doing same thing, most just as followers.

    Patricio (Hamer)
    Alonso - Robertson - Mendy - Holebas - AWB
    Salah - Hazard - Moura - Fraser - Billing
    Aguero(C) - Mitrovic - Ings

    0.2ITB, 2 FTs

Except for possibly dealing with the Mendy situation (I’ve had him since the beginning, so I can take another price drop if needed to preserve the 6.1), I don’t see any transfers that I need to make. Should I just let the one FT go?

    The case for Lacazette.

Lacazette is an excellent finisher. His G/xG ratio for the last few years was top tier and people are being blindsided by his run of terrible form when he first joined last year. All great strikers have bad runs, his just coincided with when he joined Arsenal. He will be up there with Aguero and Kane if he nails down a central role.

I have no idea what planet Mourinho lives on these days. Which part of doing that to Pogba helps any of Pogba, Man United, himself, or his relationships with the other players?...

It would have been quite easy for him to just not captain Pogba anymore without turning it into a public issue....the man's an ass who constantly wrecks his own progress at Old Trafford by treating his players like something he found on the bottom of his shoe.

    He's a shocker.

A way of slapping him down without dropping him ... they need him on the pitch.

Won't help his state of mind oc but he didn't leave Mourinho much choice if he wanted to retain a shred of authority over his squad

He does it constantly....every week he's busy "slapping somebody down". It's a great way to p your squad off and get below par performances from some potentially great players.

Yep....bitter is the word. I look at Pep and Klopp and their players love them...and it shows on the pitch. That's the way to do it.

...and maybe that word you use "authority" is the problem at United. So whilst Kliopp and Pep are encouraging some "Joi de vivre" in the camp, to great effect, Mourinho thinks he will get more from his players as some sort of Captain Mainwaring. Well he won't.

Yes he did and he was the best at it. It's a really hard trick to pull off in any walk of life. Mourinho certainly hasn't got it.

I know about 50 lads (not exactly half the stadium I know), regular match goers. I'd say at most 10 side with Pogba, the rest (myself included) side with Mourinho, though we're fully aware of his faults. Non matchgoing fans, internet brigade, they're probably more on Pogba's side.

After the hangover with the last two managers I'd be very protective of him too. I mean the day's looming already for me when Rafa throws in the towel. I just genuinely wonder if there were a suitable replacement ready to come in, would they toughen there stance a little?

Mourinho didn't say that in public though, did he? It is reported apparently by a leak from Carrington.

Mourinho didn't need to say it and Mourinho would know it would get leaked. Half his players don't like him anyway so he'd have no problem ensuring it was leaked.

I don't see how he could have avoided this though? He can't just randomly ask Pogba to give the armband 10 minutes before a match to another player, that wold have been worse. If he wanted the armband off him, the correct thing was to address it in the dressing room which he did. I don't particularly like Mou either, but blaming this on him is hardly sensible

I do not think that Jose turned it into a public issue Wakey but more the insider that leaked the news to the public.

I think Jose is right and Paul is just not captain material yet.You have to be cut out for a leadership role like that and it can have a very negative effect if you are not Rooney springs to mind for instance.

As I have said before - something happened to Mourinho when he was in Spain. His psychology has changed.

This was a guy who would call Arsene Wenger a 'voyeur', play Robben and Duff and make subs after 20 mins. Now he has turned into a moaner who blames everyone else, but himself.

Unfortunately, you cannot help those who do not want to help themselves.

Dropping a few points value. So if he drops say .4 then I lose a whole .2, or maybe .3 if I invest in another player dictated by upcoming rises. So maybe .3m, from a team of 103. something.

I don't think there is a general right decision here, it's different strokes for different folks. Just you ludicrous hype sounds self serving.

I don't know what the future holds. I'd rather bank my transfers, bench him and bring in players that have been performing fine

Either you're stupid enough to believe that Mendy ownership decisions have no nuance and no scenario exists in which any single manager could be better off holding, or you're just a ridiculous hype man who can't help running his mouth without thinking. I was giving you the credit of assuming the latter.

You still haven't explained why it's a disaster to hold a key player falling in value when you have adequate replacements for the coming week
              Nobody wins on team value.

And your splurging this hype before we've even got through a round of fixtures, let alone seen the weekend team sheets. Well. You see where I'm going with this
