Kane drops deep again to disappoint new owners for Gameweek 8

As expected, Harry Kane was at the centre of Fantasy Premier League drama as Spurs beat Cardiff at Wembley.

After being heavily backed as the best captain candidate for Gameweek 8, he served up just one point.

We’ve got more details on why that happened and all the other FPL talking points from the match in this latest edition of Scout Notes.

Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 Cardiff City

Goals: Eric Dier (£4.8m)

Assists: Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m)

Harry Kane (£12.5m) let down his 380,000+ new owners by recording just one FPL point in Tottenham’s 1-0 win over Cardiff. The forward spent a lot of time dropping deep and, according to our Members Area, his average position for the match was nearer to the centre-circle than the penalty area. Even Lucas Moura (£7.4m) and Erik Lamela (£6.4m) registered average positions closer to the Cardiff goal than Kane.

He still had more shots than anyone else at Wembley on Saturday afternoon, but Moura outperformed him for efforts inside the box. Three of Kane’s team-mates registered more touches in Cardiff’s box too, two of whom played fewer minutes than him. With Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal on Tottenham’s schedule in the next six Gameweeks, many of those who signed Kane for Gameweek 8 may be looking to immediately remove him from their squads.

England’s captain was not the only underperformer for Spurs, who did not look like they were in control of the match throughout. They were sloppy in midfield and their poor passing, in the absence of Christian Eriksen (£9.2m), Dele Alli (£9.0m) and Mousa Dembélé (£4.9m), allowed Cardiff to spend large spells camped in the Spurs half. The Bluebirds’ tactic of high pressure on Spurs certainly had its desired effect.

“Being honest we need to improve a lot. We need to kill the games and have more control. We need to be calm. When you’re at home you must control the game. I am happy, the effort was fantastic and it wasn’t easy after the defeat to Barcelona.” – Mauricio Pochettino

Son Heung-min (£8.3m) was another Spurs asset to disappoint. He had just two efforts on goal and has now gone 18 matches without a goal for his club. Furthermore, he was taken off in the 72nd minute when manager Mauricio Pochettino was still chasing goals.

Danny Rose (£5.8m) was withdrawn with a groin injury in the closing stages, and still needs to be assessed.

“It was the same as it was after Huddersfield, a problem in (Rose’s) groin. He felt it again. Hope that nothing important but of course we need to assess. He needs to go to the national team and see what happened. He needs to check in with the national team.” – Mauricio Pochettino

The Gameweek 7 injury to Jan Vertonghen (£6.0m) allowed Davinson Sánchez (£5.8m) to make his second successive start. He demonstrated his set-piece threat once again, his first-half shot leading to Eric Dier‘s (£4.8m) goal. That was his second assist of the season.

Cardiff showed off some neat approach play but it was another match where a distinct lack of quality in the final third was obvious. Junior Hoilett (£5.2m) was the prime example of the problem, as he found himself in great positions down the left-wing on multiple occasions and still failed to deliver. He was reticent to use his left-foot, consistently looking to cross with the outside of his right or attempting to cut inside, all with little success.

Utility man Callum Paterson (£5.2m) was deployed up front and did cause Spurs some problems with his hold-up play. He set up several decent chances for Cardiff, with Hoilett and Josh Murphy (£4.8m) going close. Hoilett was especially unlucky not to score a first-half equaliser as Toby Alderweireld (£5.9m) produced an exceptional block on the line. However, the fact that Neil Warnock has now named five different options at centre-forward in eight league matches is indicative of the attacking problems facing the Cardiff manager.

Sean Morrison (£4.9m) proved his goal threat from set-pieces yet again and he nearly scored in the 63rd minute with a back-post header from a free-kick. Hugo Lloris (£5.4m), back in the side for the first time since Gameweek 3, kept the Spurs clean sheet intact with a great save. That allowed the brave Fantasy managers who captained Kieran Trippier (£6.2m) to collect a 14-point haul, thanks to a shut-out and a bonus point.

Warnock and Kane’s owners were dealt a blow in the 58th minute when Joe Ralls (£4.8m) was sent off for a foul on Moura. It was a wild and cynical challenge, which stopped a dangerous Spurs break, but was still 40-yards from the Cardiff goal. Naturally, Warnock was incensed by the decision, especially with Kane getting involved in the aftermath. His reaction earned the Spurs man a yellow card.

“I was disappointed. All afternoon there were plenty of busy people around him. He said it was a group decision. I don’t think Mike Dean needs earplugs to tell him what to do. He’s a top ref. I don’t think 15 white shirts around him helped.” – Neil Warnock

“(Kane) plays for England and is a top player, I love him, but I don’t think you should try and get other pros sent off. He’s the England captain for goodness sake. He didn’t need to do that. Just because Kane was having a poor game himself. He was determined to score today because we’re the only Premier League side he’s not scored against, but I thought our centre-backs handled him well.” – Neil Warnock

FPL midfielder Danny Ward (£4.5m) made another appearance as a striker, this time coming on for Paterson. However, he had to be substituted minutes later with a calf injury.

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR XI (4-3-3): Lloris; Rose (Davies 88′), Sánchez, Alderweireld, Trippier; Winks, Dier, Sissoko (Wanyama 85′); Lucas, Kane, Son (Lamela 72′).

CARDIFF CITY XI (4-2-3-1): Etheridge, Bennett, Morrison, Bamba, Manga; Ralls, Arter; Hoilett, Camarasa, Hoilett (Harris 78′); Paterson (Ward 78′, Reid 84′).

Just been looking at a few other people's teams and there seems to be quite a few people that picked a wolves defender and left AWB on the bench. I went with AWB and left Doherty on the bench.

Hindsight n all that but I just couldn't see the logic of this before hand.

    Was it so obvious? :-/

Not really IMO. The FFS model predicted more points for AWB than Doherty.

Play the home guy is usual, but Wolves are good- probably the best promoted side in recent history.

AWB was a 9 or a fail. Doherty had a bigger ceiling.

Benching Doherty was insanity. I started Patricio and even Bennett (who doesn't have Doherty's attacking threat) over AWB. Palace hadn't scored at home all season while Wolves' xG conceded was very low.

Personally I just thought Wolves looked the better team in recent weeks. Plus I saw one of Doherty's heatmaps.....

Yeah that was my reasoning for Doherty and Jonny over AWB. As you say, probability of CS was approx. equal, or in Wolves' favour, and attacking threat in the Wolves' wingback's favour.

Would have considered AWB over Bennett, if I had him, due to AWB bonus, but might have settled on Bennett anyway, since he can still get goals and bonus himself.

Played both. Should have benched AWB for Steve Cook, but started AWB and Doherty in case any of them got a clean sheet. Didn't expect that for Cook.

Huge element of luck attached to this game... it was 50/50 assists and cleans wise imo with AWB and Doherty... I played Hart over Patricio

Doherty scoring? How many times will that happen, cleansheet was either way as you say

As much as people want to use hindsight to pretend it was obvious, it was just FPL luck. Could have gone either way.

Saying palace haven't scored at home, are they going to use that argument for all 18 home games?

        Football doesn't work like that

        1. SADIO SANÉ
          • 8 Years

Doherty and Jonny are much more attacking than AWB, all 3 are great picks but those two definitely have more potential for attacking returns

    11. fusen
      • 12 Years
      5 years, 6 months ago

      I played Hart over Patricio

And AWB over Doherty who is my first bencher

24 points on the bench and 26 points from my 6 played 11 ...

It wasn't obvious at all, it was lucky.

Palace will at some point score at home and it'll be sooner rather than later. That is basic law of averages.

Also palace have been defending well at home and AWB has been getting returns on top of cleansheets

I couldn't agree more. Someone on one of my posts said it was a No Brsiner to play Wolves DF over CP DF. No it wasn't. AWB with consecutive 9 pointers. Such a tough call

That’s where the gambler’s fallacy kicks in- because the event you wish to happen hasn’t happened for a while then you feel it ‘must’ happen soon

Looking at both sides on balance there was a pretty high chance of a Wolves cs

Easy to call it hindsight but those that played a Wolves defender will say it was more judgement than luck

Those that played Awb will feel themselves unlucky

I like your logic. Mine was swayed by owning Zaha and my hate for having my strikers play defenders in the same GW.

Need to rid of Zaha btw lol

Zaha a great player but Palace just not producing enough at the moment

In Fpl it’s natural to hope and believe one of our strikers will score but don’t let that you prejudice your choice of defender!

Easy to say in hindsight though!

But my point wasn’t about FPL points.....

My point was about watching football. The people that started AWB over Doherty probably haven’t watched Doherty this season. I’ve watched 3 of his games and it made my decision easy....

I just thought Palace were due to score (and have Zaha which swayed me even further) to start AWB and bench Doherty. Had Doherty lush points last week but don't think it was as easy a decision as people are making out. Judging by comments a lot of people in the same boat.
Well done for getting the 15 pts tho

Honestly mate, if you get some spare time watch a couple wolves games you’ll see exactly what I mean by Doherty being an easy decision.

When I saw Him vs Burnley at home he became a perms pick 😆

This is good advice, I got Doherty on my GW5 Wildcard after watching the extended highlights of him away at West Ham. After watching him vs Burnley you could see he will be involved in a lot of Wolves goals this season.

I did bench him against Man Utd, but have got all 3 of his hauls, he is my favourite pick this season by far. Would not drop him now, every time i see him he is in or around the other teams penalty box, he looks so dangerous. Season keeper for me.

I played Patricio, Doherty and AWB... and also benched Zaha.

It was a bit gung-ho, but as with Team Cruel above, had:
      - Cottoned onto Palace's poor goalscoring form of late (especially at home) > hence Zaha bench
      - Realised that defensively, they'd still been pretty decent > hence played AWB
      - Kept tabs on Wolves' defensive stats. Low Big Chances conceded, xG etc > hence Pat & Doherty

For sure, there was certainly luck involved, but the above felt like decent reasons enough.

Posted similar q below. In your case I’ll say no as he’s likely to just be your 5th defender and will rarely play for you. If you plan to rotate often then might make sense

Well happy, up to 25,498 from 90k with 49 points & Salah, Kun, Alonso & Mitro to play, was near 200k last week! Might lose rank a bit if Haz goes mad but I'll take it!

      I’ve just gone from 55k down to 18k with 48 (-4).

Haz, Alonso and Salah left to play.

Should not have brought in Kane!

Non Doherty owners, are you jumping on board now regardless of fixtures or is it points chasing?

    Have 2FT going into IB...

Is anyone here tempted to drop Aguero for Sterling?

With lots of European games starting to come thick and fast, I reckon Sterling can get returns even if he just has 20 minutes on the pitch. Aguero, less so.

Tempted to go all cheap up front and load the midfield with Salah, Hazard and Sterling.

I actually like bournmouth’s Next 5 fixtures, city away is tough after that allright but then hudds home after that... kind of looks like 6 good out of the next 7 (for attackers)

The value those BOU front 3 are offering is off the charts at the minute

Doherty can easily be benched. Would be fine if he had to come on, they only conceded one each against city and utd. I don't have Fraser but Bournemouth are very unpredictable and can turn it on against anyone.
