Meet the Manager #4 – Richard Clarke

Richard Clarke is among an elite core of managers who have topped our Hall of Fame, which is based on the career achievements of those in our Fantasy Premier League mini-leagues.

He achieved this momentous feat just last month and after since slipping to 11th spot he is keen to once again return to the summit and secure his ambition of being number one when the season ends.

In the latest in our Meet the Manager video series he reveals how he plans to see off the competition and discusses the strategies that have earned him such incredible success over his 12 previous campaigns.

With seven top 10,000 finishes, including last season’s 263rd and a 303rd rank in 2011/13, he is a competitor that cannot be underestimated. In fact, he is yet to have a poor season, with 2015/16’s end rank of 32,547th his ‘worst’ to date.

Richard (FPL team link here) discusses the importance of keeping tabs on elite managers and the season ticker. He also reveals how analysing probability can ensure managers make their own luck.

This season’s trends are also discussed, as he reveals which heavy hitter he is looking to shun on his upcoming Wildcard and how the tried and tested ‘eye-test’ let him down badly last weekend.

The chat with Richard is available to view on Youtube here and in the embedded video below.

The first Meet the Manager video, featuring Triggerlips, can be viewed here, while the second, featuring Philman, can be seen here. Last week’s episode, featuring Will Thomas, is available here.

    Wildcard Needed? I think so

    Ederson Begovic
    TAA AWB Shaw Alonso Trippier
    Salah Rich Maddison Knockart Cairney
    Salah Mitro Ings

I'd wildcard too if I had two Salah's stinking up my team 😆

I wouldn't WC personally though. Just use FTs to get rid of Shaw, Cairney (Begovic to 4.0) Trippier

No need to wildcard. Focus on getting Hazard in in two transfers and you'll be fine.

    2 questions..

How nailed on do we think Mendy is? Are people going back to him?

Salah vs Mane - what are people doing for this plum run of fixtures?

I'd trust Salah much more than Mané. As a Mané owner since the start, it's actually been a bit painful watching him at times. Salah is usually much more involved- plan on getting him for Cardiff I think.
In terms of Mendy, that's a big question for my WC. I personally don't think he's nailed but unlikely to make a cameo appearance, still offers outstanding value and lots of strong bench options to cover the odd no show.

Keeping Trippier for now. Mendy seems injury prone.

I kept Mendy so naturally will be keeping now he's back.

I have Mane. Not bringing Salah.

Going to keep Trippier for at least one more week to see how the Mendy situation plays out.

Prefer Salah- while he has been wasteful recently, he has been very involved and got into the right scoring positions, I've hardly noticed Mane a lot of the time when watching Liverpool play.

    5. MTPockets

I think he's nailed. But also don't believe Sane will be sidelined, so that needs resolving by Pep.
        Have Salah.

The games against Spurs and Chelsea mean nothing as Lovren wasn't available. People seem to forget that Lovren and Van Dijk actually formed a very good partnership at the back end of last season. Lovren went on to have a great World Cup and as soon as he was fit again Klopp chose to start him against the best attack in the league.

Too many people panicking about TAA after a tactical benching and after playing every game this season.

I'm a TAA owner and Liverpool fan and not worried at all - sure he will be rested every now and again (like everyone) but will still play 90% of games and his output at RB is needed against the smaller teams.

Gomez has been imperious at CB this season and won't be competing with TAA for RB.

Which he would only need to think about against Arsenal, PSG and Napoli during the next 7 GWs. Being rotated with Clyne is a bigger issue than being benched for defensive reasons, but Clyne will probably get to play against Red Star over the next 4 GWs.

What do we think of David Brooks as an option? 15 points in his last two matches as a 5.0 midfielder. Good enough for fourth midfielder or likely to come under threat from Stanislas after the international break?

Is Doherty worth the 0.3m more than Jonny?

Or are they essentially the same thing, and Jonny could easily be the better scoring wingback this week?

Haven't really watched Wolves yet, so not sure if there is a difference in the attacking intent of these two.

        Alonso Trippier TAA (Doherty AWB)

Mendy looks like he's going to be another Kompany. Great when fit but can't stay healthy.

Lacazette looks like a trap to me. Arsenal have basically feasted off 5 of the worst defences in the Prem in the last 5 games.

Their next stretch of 7 games has 4 tough outs (LIV, wol, TOT, MANU) . I don't see them getting anywhere near the amount of goals they've been getting recently.

As a Salah owner, I would secretly prefer for Fabinho or Mane to take them as Salah would probably miss!

Although I wonder if Klopp will get Salah on the next pen just to get him off the mark and scoring again.

I think he has the biggest chance (with pre-season scoring two). But last season Firmino was on them for a while, even Salah took some. I think it's about:
          Mané 40%
          Firmino 35%
          Salah 25%

yes since you have 5 playing defenders, although if youve still got your bench boost chip it would make using that in the near future pointless.

            A

Look at the next 7 Arsenal fixtures. They've been feasting of most of the worst defences in the Prem over the last 5 weeks. Now they're coming up against 4 teams all capable of shutting them out or only conceding 1 a game.

            Sterling and Arne for me.

Nice insight Nomar....you’ve given me some food for thought here!
Just to let you know, I’m on WC now and my three forwarders are currently Mitrovic, Wilson and Lacazette. I have Hazard and Mane for the top mids.
You still think I’m ok with A since I don’t have Aguero or Kane ?

Wilson and Lacazette are OK for the next 2 games but then their fixtures change.

I'd in a WC I'd be inclined to get Murray or Arne for Wilson and then think about upgrading Lacazette in GW10

          Alonso Robbo Mendy Trippier Doherty

          Hi all,

          Currently on WC

          Fab - Patricio
          Robbo - Doherty - Mendy - AWB - Bennett
          Salah - Hazard - Richarlison - Fraser - Hojberg
          Aguero - Arnie - Mitro

          ITB 1 M

Positions where I have the most doubts are in DEF
I'm playing 3-4-3, I don't plan to bench Doherty so I need 2 premium def. Robbo is 1st choice but then not sure between Mendy/Trippier/Alonso.
I tend to go Mendy for fixtures (compared to Spurs) & price (Alonso is a lot of money) plus he will have 2 full weeks of rest because he is not playing with France
          Should I upgrade my 4th DEF ? J. Gomez/TAA ? Yedlin/Duffy ? any other suggestions ?

Not nailed. Was dropped for Huddersfield but then D Gray got injured. He's a nice option for now, but I think it is Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Trippier, Doherty, Bennett and AWB competing for 5 spots in most people's squads.

Aye. Oh yeah forgot about Gray. He could even be back for their next good fixture.

He might be but there are lots of Defenders people will have before him: Alonso, Mendy, Roberton, TAA, Trippier, Doherty, Bennett

Certainly looks a good option if he stays in the team. Puel has a lot of options out wide such as Albrighton and Ghezzal as well as Maddison so Pereira has competition for the right wing spot...

Yeah Gray also a worry on his return. Will probably steer clear after all. Although he is winning a noteworthy amount of tackles to complement his attacking threat

I need Mitrovic to go down in price. Why only down 3% in a day?!

If i do a Trippier->mendy on wc and mendy gets benched next week, probably my squad could still work well with doherty as the 1st sub?

If the answer is yes then i may go for it.

            Got two FTs, anything doing?

            Patricio (4.0)
            TAA, Laporte, Alonso (Bennett, AWB)
            Hazard, Richarlison, Maddison, Mane (Hojberg)
            Aguero, Mitro, Laca

Any £ ITB? Solid team but could take out AWB so you don't lose a transfer? His fixture list is awful.

            Schmeichel
            Trippier TAA Cook Alonso
            Mane Moura Son Hazard
            Zaha Aguero

            Stekelenburg Maddison AWB Kamara

            0.2 ITB & 1 FT

            Which option is better?
            A Trippier > Mendy
            B Zaha > Mitrovic
            C Zaha > Arnoutavic
            D Moura > Siggy

Would probably save - ride out the spurs game and then reconsider for the Southampton game

How do you solve a problem like Pereyra?

(How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?)

He’s only 6.2 (6.1 sell value), so what are the alternatives if I already have Fraser?

1FT this gameweek - what would you do?

                A) Mane ---> Salah
                B) Trippier ---> Mendy

Personally don't think Trippier will keep many cleen sheets in the next 5 or so games so am thinking Mendy.
