Wildcards change shape of top 10k FPL squads in Gameweek 9

Squads among the top 10,000 bracket of Fantasy Premier League managers changed a little for Gameweek 9.

The international break triggered 4.4% of Wildcards at that level of the overall rankings. This was more than double the figure from any of the previous three Gameweeks.

In this article, we will highlight the differences between the choices made by Wildcarders and the rest of managers, also discussing the effect of injury news during the break.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week.

This leads to a cumulative percentage of managers in the top 10k who already used the chip to 73.7%, a number that is particularly high considering we are only almost half-way through the first Wildcard usage window.

The overall cumulative percentage of Wildcarders is much lower, 35.4% and we could see significant changes in the top10k fabric if the Wildcards that are to be used in the next few weeks make a big difference.

Most Popular Players

Next, we look at the most common picks of the Gameweek 9 Wildcards vs the total picks of the top 10k.

Most of the Wildcard picks actually explain themselves. The two cheap goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski dominate the Wildcards selection.

In defense, the interest in the in-form Matt Doherty and the returning  Benjamin Mendy is the main focus point. While they are in 72.4%, 69.2% of Wildcard teams respectively, their ownership in the top 10k reside at just 50.4% and 26.1%.

Meanwhile, it seems like Marcos Alonso and Kieran Trippier are the main fall guys.

On the other hand, midfield and attack options look very similar. The only exception is the shy appearance  of Raheem Sterling in 39% of Wildcards while it was Ryan Fraser’s position in the rest of the top 10k.

Speaking of which, the Bournemouth man, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the most popular picks that had injuries over the international break.

While Fraser had 42.6% top 10k ownership last week, the number only slightly dropped to 41.8% indicating that only 0.8% managers decided to sell him this week based on his injury concerns.

However, not all who kept him actually had him in the starting XI.

In fact, Fraser’s percentage in started top 10k teams is only 33.85% meaning that around 8% of managers have him on the bench this week.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane switched places again for top 10k ownership. Salah now leads with 34.1% as opposed to 31.4% for Mane. The Egyptian has an even higher effective ownership since 6.7% of top 10k managers actually gave him the armband this week.

The other top captaincy choices this week are the very popular option of Sergio Aguero (67.2%) and Eden Hazard (7.2%). Other differential captains were Sterling (5.97%), Harry Kane (4.28%) and Alexandre Lacazette (3.5%).

It looks like so far this season, most of the obvious captaincy choices delivered and Aguero continued this pattern today.

Also, as the most owned players in the top 10k have been more or less the same the past few weeks, it can still be hard to beat the template with differential picks or captains. But this could all change.

I'll look at him in a couple of weeks as an enabler. I haven't owned any midfielder more than 5.0 and less than 7.4 this season. He could be the first cheap mid I take seriously for the starting XI. No rush for me though 🙂

I have had Maddison and Fraser both sat in my team all season. They have done well for me over the season. I just need an extra one to throw into the mix when the fixtures stiffen.

Another one! 😮 Plenty of money on the bench each week then if you're always benching one or two of them. Could be worth it if they rotate well, I suppose

True. I will have a good look at it. I like at least one or two decent options on the bench (I don't consider the likes of Bennett a decent option). It allows to flex fixtures and inevitable rotation.

Me too, and I semi agree about Bennett, which is why I got Jonny, and sold AWB for TAA, with Yedlin also on the bench. Although now, I'm thinking Yedlin needs an upgrade again.

Defenders make great bench players because of the bang for their buck, which is why I only semi-agree with Bennet being a lame bench option, since he doesn't have many points in him compared to Doherty for example, but he's still a worth second sub at worst most weeks imo, which would make the third sub a base-price player for me (actually I do have Hudson-Odoi with 2 of Yedlin, Doherty and Jonny on the bench each week).

Just another reason to avoid the cheaper midfielders unless you're really, really convinced by them imo.

I own both and I'd say Arnie would be my slight preference. If he leaves extra money in the back, you have the addedbonus to reasses the more expensive option (Vardy) before investing, too, which lessens the risk. But I'd give the edge to Arnie, anyway, in pure footballing terms. Subject to change my mind on Monday 😛

In FPL you are looking for value, Arnie represents greater value imo. Chance of similar returns for 2m less.

He said he plans to get both, one now and one next week, which is why he's looking for an absolute comparison of the two for one game.

Did VVD > TAA this week to fund Salah in time for Cardiff. Don't know if I can be arsed spending 12.8 on a player that needs a hat-trick to get baps.

I'm aware of his potential. Liverpool are a different team this year. Far more pragmatic. Good for defenders, bad for Salah et tal.

don't mind it if captaining, quite likely to get rid after GW12 though, he isn't worth it on his own (un-doubled)

            1.7m GW rank = 27k>24k OR

            I’ll take it.

            Trippier/Murray > Maguire/Lacazette for free?

I'm assuming that this article is based on comparing last weeks 10k v this weeks 10k. This make some of the assumptions and comparisons in the article void. This weeks 10k wont be the same as last weeks. It-s gonna be really difficult to do proper comparisons, as sites like fpldiscovery are only showing who's top10k before the gwk starts. It seems like a small difference, but its actually a big one. Especially early in the season.

For sure it's not the same. I'm the lowest scorer from last weeks 10k, making me now 40k 😆

Well.... You've got "5" very good players left to play, but it certainly highlights the point. week to week 10k samples are uncomparable at this stage of the season.

Bench Mendy over Bennet? And captain Salah over Hazard? Something entirely different? Could bench one of Wilson / Fraser I guess?

            Hennessy, Hamer
            Robertson, Alonso, Mendy, Bennet, AWB
            Salah, Hazard, Fraser, Pereyra, Hojbjerg
            Aguero, Wilson, Mitro

            What do we think?

Højbjerg looking dangerous. Could bag another couple of goals before the year is out. Almost certainly whilst rooted as third sub on everyone's benches.

Getting itchy fingers with Moura dropping tonight. Will be doing Ings for Arnie next week. Can also afford Peltier to Mendy but that means I won’t be able to upgrade Wilson to Mitro or anything.

            Patricio Hamer
            Alonso Robertson Doherty AWB Peltier
            Salah Hazard Richarlison Fraser Moura*
            Aguero Wilson Ings

            £1.1 in bank

            Should I:

            A. Swap Moura for Camarasa/Kayal/Hojbjerg?
            B. Swap Peltier for Mendy
            C. Both
            D. Neither

Don’t usually advocate hits, but if you’re looking at the next 5 GWs that probably gives you a good return... do it.

I'm looking at the same move.

I think I'm gonna save the Ings > Arnie part for next week and just take the -4 this week. Swapping Ings v Newcastle for Arnie v Leicester isn't quite worth it if you can do it for free a week later.

I could do Kane > Arnie/Vardy for -4. I take it you’re going for Vardy first?

Are you adamant about selling Kane for a hit then? Lacazette is another one to consider.

Yeah, Kane is definitely going this week. In the long run bringing in someone with better fixtures and freeing up those funds will justify the -4, I think. It's a lot of money invested in someone I won't be captaining any time soon. This is as good a week to lose him as any other.

Lacazette is still very much on my radar. He could easily change my plans with another performance this week.
