Wildcards change shape of top 10k FPL squads in Gameweek 9

Squads among the top 10,000 bracket of Fantasy Premier League managers changed a little for Gameweek 9.

The international break triggered 4.4% of Wildcards at that level of the overall rankings. This was more than double the figure from any of the previous three Gameweeks.

In this article, we will highlight the differences between the choices made by Wildcarders and the rest of managers, also discussing the effect of injury news during the break.

As expected, the Wildcard chip is the only one that has significant usage this week.

This leads to a cumulative percentage of managers in the top 10k who already used the chip to 73.7%, a number that is particularly high considering we are only almost half-way through the first Wildcard usage window.

The overall cumulative percentage of Wildcarders is much lower, 35.4% and we could see significant changes in the top10k fabric if the Wildcards that are to be used in the next few weeks make a big difference.

Most Popular Players

Next, we look at the most common picks of the Gameweek 9 Wildcards vs the total picks of the top 10k.

Most of the Wildcard picks actually explain themselves. The two cheap goalkeepers Rui Patricio and Lukasz Fabianski dominate the Wildcards selection.

In defense, the interest in the in-form Matt Doherty and the returning  Benjamin Mendy is the main focus point. While they are in 72.4%, 69.2% of Wildcard teams respectively, their ownership in the top 10k reside at just 50.4% and 26.1%.

Meanwhile, it seems like Marcos Alonso and Kieran Trippier are the main fall guys.

On the other hand, midfield and attack options look very similar. The only exception is the shy appearance  of Raheem Sterling in 39% of Wildcards while it was Ryan Fraser’s position in the rest of the top 10k.

Speaking of which, the Bournemouth man, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were the most popular picks that had injuries over the international break.

While Fraser had 42.6% top 10k ownership last week, the number only slightly dropped to 41.8% indicating that only 0.8% managers decided to sell him this week based on his injury concerns.

However, not all who kept him actually had him in the starting XI.

In fact, Fraser’s percentage in started top 10k teams is only 33.85% meaning that around 8% of managers have him on the bench this week.

Meanwhile, Salah and Mane switched places again for top 10k ownership. Salah now leads with 34.1% as opposed to 31.4% for Mane. The Egyptian has an even higher effective ownership since 6.7% of top 10k managers actually gave him the armband this week.

The other top captaincy choices this week are the very popular option of Sergio Aguero (67.2%) and Eden Hazard (7.2%). Other differential captains were Sterling (5.97%), Harry Kane (4.28%) and Alexandre Lacazette (3.5%).

It looks like so far this season, most of the obvious captaincy choices delivered and Aguero continued this pattern today.

Also, as the most owned players in the top 10k have been more or less the same the past few weeks, it can still be hard to beat the template with differential picks or captains. But this could all change.

What are us Sterling owners to do now? Mo looking ready to explode and yesterday's fixture was meant to justify Sterling...

The template has formed now and it has no room for Sterling. It is basically:

      4.5 GK (Ryan, Patricio, Fabianski)
      4.0 GK (Hamer, Button)
      Mendy, Robertson, Alonso
      Wolves Def (Doherty, Jonny, Bennett)
      AWB
      Salah, Hazard
      Fraser
      7m MF (Richarlison, Maddison)
      4.5 MF (lots of options)
      Aguero
      7.0m FW (Zaha, Mitro, Arnie)
6.5m FW (King, Wilson, Murray, Jimenez, Ings)

I am suprised that so many people have moved away from the back 3 of Mendy - Robertson - Alonso. There has not been a single week where the combination (swap Tripps for Mendy through his injury) has not returned good points. It changes week to week which one or two delivers. But it doesn't really matter. They are consistent. It is the regular points which are required to do well in FPL. Cost cutting to the likes of TAA or perhaps a 4.5m defender or two is damaging people's rank You end up putting so much pressure on the player you have spent the extra money to deliver over the likes of Arnie/Mitro or Mad/Rich. An impossible task.

I have owned Trippier during the spell (it worked) but I brought him back in last night for Tripps. The big 3 plus AWB and Doherty looks a no brainer for me. My team is good enough not to need to spend the money elsewhere.

      Agree with you there.

I have 1FT and need to get another starter on my bench.

      Really want Robertson back too.

      Trippier to Robertson or
Rico to Duffy and do Robertson for GW11

Have you got the cash to do Rico/Stones/Trip to Doherty/Mendy/Robertson.

For this week Rico/Stones > Doherty/Robertson (-4) looks good. The following week trade Tripps > Mendy.

I’m 1.3m short for that(have 0.2 itb), which is why I had to get Stones in instead of Mendy last GW.
Maguire could be a decent option?

Perhaps. For me I think that back 3 outscores any other by a distance. Owning Stones would be my biggest concern followed by Rico. I don't think Tripps is a bad option. I have swapped him to Mendy myself but I would be happy to keep. It may take some cash from elsewhere to upgrade Stones to Mendy or Robbo.

Southampton and Bournemouth at home. Perhaps. Perhaps not. Either way many will. I have to be a little careful rank wise at the moment. I don't think it is a terrible idea if you can use the cash well. It isn't for me.

As a Liverpool fan, I want him playing CB with VVD, with Lovren out.

Gomez has been our best player this season along with VVD. So impressive that he can switch from CB to RB as well. I think we’ll see Trent in the next two home games though - as well as Matip making at least one appearance.

Reason being that we need Lovren / Matip to be match-ready if anything happens to either VVD or Gomez. Both have had serious injury issues in the past so we need those reserve lads played in.

        strange huh?

To me this is simple, TAA better than Gomez offensively. Not much difference defensewise as right backs, Gomez also prone to do mistakes there more so than as CB. Gomez and Lovren is very solid CB´s but with some big differences in style. Gomez alot better with the ball, much faster and as a CB he looks very assured and not making mistakes, Lovren is unplayable at times but also makes huge mistakes. Even if there is no apparent differences in quality to me Liverpool are much better with Gomez and TAA, because then TAA can run a lot higher up the pitch knowing that Gomez pace will save him. It gives the opponent both an extra threath to deal with, but also makes them more difficult to counter, as Gomez and van dijk is among the paciest cb pair in the league.

Think you need some city attack cover so it’s either have aguero or a midfielder but with a very good 12th player in case they get rested like sterling yesterday. Thing is sterling would have got 30 minutes yesterday if the game was tight yesterday so you run that risk plus when Gundogan comes back in a couple of weeks there are 4 spots for dilva, bilva, Gundogan, Kdb, Mahrez, Sané, sterling, and foden will get some minutes as well. Also the chance he plays 3 5 2 the odd time so less game time for midfielders. So there’s no perfect way into the city assets, I’ve gone for Ederson, Mendy and aguero as see them as consistent points every week but miss out on the big occasional hauls from the midfielders.

Morning dzzz, another rough week. I have been stuck around the 80k mark since gw3 ffs! Anyhow, need thoughts on which team would you prefer

    A (leaves 0m):
    Patricio Foster
    Alonso Robbo MENDYDoherty - awb
Salah Rich Maddison Hazard — stephens
    Kun King — KAMARA
    - very solid starting XI I think
    - downside is a weak bench and being stuck to playing 442 even when Doherty faces spurs/arsenal soon
    - biggest issue is what to do with King from gw11 when his fixtures turn? Robbo/king >> Maguire/Arnie (-4) in gw11?

    B (leaves 0.6m itb):
    Patricio Foster
    Alonso Robbo Doherty SCHINDLER Awb
    Salah Hazard Rich Maddison Camarasa
    Kun King INGS
    - more flexibility as Schindler has good fixtures so can play him ahead of Ings (city) in gw11 and Doherty (ars) in gw12
    - biggest benefit is I can do king >> arnie/Mitro in gw11

    Hart
    TAA Trippier Doherty
    Salah (C)Hazard Maddison Richarlison
    Aguero Arnautovic Mitrovic

    hamer Laporte AWB Masuaku

    1 ft and 0.3 itb

Any suggestions on what to do here ?

    A. Trippier>Robertson
    B. Aguero>Vardy
    C. Hart>Ryan/fabianski

Getting a 9mil striker for gw9 means i cant easily get Mendy back in if I want RAM and Doherty. Why didnt i think this out properly.

Alonso to Robertson. Tbf its probably quite a sideways transfer pointswise over the season. The problem will come if one of my premiums gets injured and I need to buy Alonso back.

I guess my rationale was long term I want a defence of RMT+D+AwB. I think my rationale was I can have all 4 premiums, or I can have 3+Richi, so as i couldn't choose between them the most expensive kopped it. Robertsons price rise was probably what forced by hand.

I can see logic in that. I think Trippier is the 4th best option and with the money saved on Alonso not a bad pick. Any of those 4 should do well but Alonso is a keeper for me. Aurier will start getting a game or two soon. Especially in the easier ties

im looking at wk15+ Trippier looks absolutely essential based on the fixtures.

Very true. You have 3 premium options with strong cover. I think it looks fine to me and the logic makes sense.

but yeah, has the potential to be a rank killer of a move given Alonso's 46% ownership.
need some nurofen now, and potentially more for the future

Think you did well. I got rid weeks ago in time for Dohertys second haul and haven't looked back since... Thing about Alonso is he ALWAYS looks dangerous, but doesn't always translate that into points.

Ouch! Ryan has repaid the faith I showed in bringing him in for GW1. I very nearly swapped him out for Rui a couple of weeks ago and then Mendy saved me by getting injured and gave me a more important transfer to make.

    Pick one

    A Aguero Son> Salah Arnautovic
    B Sterling Son > Salah Martial/Maddison

Not a fan of those Aguero minutes.
Last five games he got less than 65 minutes. Also City seem to score more goals toward the end when he isnt there.

His ownership will hurt.. But wont be captaining him in the next 3 anyway..

Before yesterday's games I'd focused on Liverpool defence rather than attack on my wildcard, as they don't seem right going forward but doing enough to win games. Perfect for defenders imo.
Shame Trent didn't play but happy with Robbo 8 points and feel like I've made the right decision to avoid pool attack for now.

KDB but requires a major shift in squad balance as I don't want to sell Salah or Hazard so means fitting in three premium midfielders. Alonso to D.Luiz would be the main enabler.

Yeah I've still got WC also. What sort of structure are you looking at?

          I'm thinking
          4.5 (Patricio)

2 × premium (Mendy and Robertson), 1 mid priced/5.0-5.5, 2 x cheap (AWB and Bennett)

Salah, Hazard, KDB, Fraser, cheap 4.4

          Aguero, Arnie, cheap 4.4

So 4-4-2 with one of AWB, Bennett or midfielder rotating.

Arnie, Fab (cover for Pat), KdB, Trippier.

      Haz Mane KdB Richi
      Aguero Arnie

      WC plan WAS....

      Robbo, Maguire, Luiz, Doherty, Balbeuna
      Haz, Mane, KDB, 4.4, 4.4
      Aguero, Vardy, Wilson

Wondering about Mendy now, and Mane is obvs a concern. Ryan tempting me too.
