Palace denied clean sheet late on as Pickford top-scores in Everton win

Our latest set of Scout Notes from Gameweek 9 focuses on the only Premier League fixture to have been contested on Sunday.

Everton’s match against Crystal Palace appeared to have been heading for a goalless draw before late strikes from substitutes Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun, leaving those with the most-owned outfielders on show at Goodison Park with little to take away from the encounter.

Fantasy managers who were hoping for a sizeable haul from the likes of Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott, Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to salvage a fairly underwhelming Gameweek were left disappointed as Jordan Pickford emerged from the Toffees’ 2-0 win with the joint-highest score of this weekend thanks to his penalty save from Luka Milivojevic.

Not one of the four players involved in Everton’s four goals were owned by more than 2.3% of Fantasy managers, meanwhile.

We round up the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points and manager quotes from the penultimate match of Gameweek 9.

Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m), Cenk Tosun (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Ademola Lookman (£5.1m), Michael Keane (£4.9m)

When Richarlison (£6.9m) scored after seven minutes of his first run-out as an Everton striker in the Toffees’ 2-1 win over Leicester City in Gameweek 8, there was much hope for the 25.7% of us who own the Brazilian.

In the 173 minutes of action that Richarlison has played since then, he has had only one attempt on goal – that being a header over from a Lucas Digne (£4.8m) corner-kick in the first half of the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Anyone watching Sunday’s victory over the Eagles would have surely reached a similar conclusion: that the outwardly positive move “out of position” to attack appears to the detriment of Richarlison’s goal threat.

Eden Hazard (£11.4m) has run into similarly underwhelming form when moved to a “false nine” position in the past and it seems, admittedly on the evidence of just two matches there, that Richarlison also presents much more of an attacking menace when running at opposition defences rather than playing with his back to them.

Richarlison’s inclusion as the spearhead of the Everton attack was again to accommodate Bernard (£5.9m) on the left flank, though the latter of the two turned in a particularly ineffectual display and Everton’s two goals came after his withdrawal and Richarlison was shunted back out to the wing.

Bernard had turned in an excellent performance at Leicester, of course, so it remains to be seen whether Marco Silva perseveres with the pint-sized Brazilian on the left wing and his countryman up top for the trip to Manchester United next weekend. It may be, indeed, that Richarlison is more suited to the striker’s role when playing away from home against a “bigger” side, given the damage he could potentially wreak on the counter-attack.

As it was at Goodison, though, there was little to cheer for the two Brazilians or Theo Walcott (£6.5m). The trio had only two shots on goal between them, with Walcott wasting the best chance of all when played through on goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m).

Bernard should have squared for the unmarked Walcott just after the hour mark in what was to be his final major act, with Everton’s subsequent substitutions turning the game.

Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) crossed for fellow substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) to open the scoring on 86 minutes, before Bernard’s replacement, Cenk Tosun (£6.7m), latched onto Michael Keane‘s (£4.9m) hoofed clearance-turned-pass to put the match beyond Palace two minutes later.

Silva hailed his squad depth at full-time:

I’m really happy for them. Cenk has come on in the last two home games and scored two important goals, for us and for him as well.

I was pleased for Dominic and Lookman because they created the first goal and are working really hard as well to get into the starting XI.

It’s important for us, now we have solutions on the bench to solve some problems during the match.

Sigurdsson was the pick of Everton’s starting front four, supplying that excellent chance for Walcott and having five attempts on his own – the most any player at Goodison recorded.

As usual, most of his efforts were from outside the box, with the pick of those attempts from distance being a shot that whistled just wide of Wayne Hennessey‘s (£4.6m) left-hand post.

The Icelandic midfielder’s only effort from inside the Palace area drew a smart stop from Hennessey in the first half, meanwhile.

Aside from Silva’s substitutions, the game’s turning point came on 60 minutes. After the fit-again Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) had felled Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) in the Everton box, Luka Milivojevic (£6.1m) was given the opportunity to register his first attacking return of the season from 12 yards.

So dependable from the spot in 2017/18, Milivojevic could only find the trailing leg of Jordan Pickford (£5.9m) this time and with that glorious chance went Palace’s last real opportunity of the match.

His manager, Roy Hodgson, backed the Serbian midfielder to bounce back and take Palace’s next penalty, with no suggestion that someone like Zaha would oust Milivojevic from spot-kick duties:

The fact is you have to take your chances and we came across a goalkeeper in form who made two outstanding saves in the first half which meant we came in at half-time 0-0, and we had the penalty which would have made a difference. It definitely lifted the crowd and they really got behind the team and gave them fresh impetus going forward.

Luka has only missed two penalties out of around nine or 10 so I’m sure he’ll score the next one, and I’m sure we’ll get penalties and opportunities because we do send people forward into the opposing team’s box.

Hodgson’s side arguably had the better of the match in the first half and most certainly had the biggest chances: James Tomkins (£4.4m) demonstrating his aerial threat by firstly heading Andros Townsend‘s (£5.8m) cross narrowly wide and then nodding on for Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.8m) to strike the Everton woodwork.

Zaha – passed fit after the recurrence of an adductor injury – and Townsend were paired up front in a 4-4-2, with Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.5m) and James McArthur (£4.8m) taking up the “wide” roles either side of Milivojevic and Kouyate.

Zaha and Townsend didn’t have a great deal of joy up front (registering only one shot each), but Zaha’s trickery did cause problems for Coleman in particular – culminating in that aforementioned penalty award.

Hodgson paid tribute to his strike duo after the match:

I think it went well and both played well. They caused problems and did their work defensively as well which helped the team, so I think they’ve got to be very satisfied with their day’s work.

We do have other alternatives. Sorloth was sick, as was Max Meyer, so there’s a couple of players there who I’m sure will be available for the next game, and Connor Wickham after two years at least got onto the field of play; albeit with three or four minutes left and he was unlikely to be able to perform any miracles.

Palace’s stand-out players were perhaps at the back, with Tomkins and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) particularly impressive and in the mix for bonus points prior to those two late strikes. That Bernard and then Richarlison were so impotent down the Everton left was a testament to Wan-Bissaka’s defensive work.

With Palace facing “big six” sides in the next four Gameweeks, Wan-Bissaka will likely be sitting on countless benches between now and the beginning of December but many will rightly be keeping hold of this budget gem for when the Eagles’ fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 14.

Connor Wickham (£4.9m) returned for the visitors as a late substitute after almost two years out, while Yerry Mina (£5.4m) was on the bench for Everton on his own return from injury.

Max Meyer (£5.7m) and Alexander Sorloth (£4.9m), meanwhile, missed out with illness for Palace.

Andre Gomes (£5.4m) made his Everton debut in the double pivot and Silva was positive about the on-loan Portuguese midfielder, who is unlikely to be coveted by many FPL managers going forward:

He did well, like we expected. He is working really hard and well. He is a player who can give us different things in that zone.

I am happy with Tom Davies and his performances as well. I knew and I expected a tough game this afternoon and we needed Andre to control the ball and give different solutions for us in some moments. He is a little bit of a different profile from Tom.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Zouma, Digne; Gueye, Gomes (Calvert-Lewin 82’); Walcott (Lookman 82’), Sigurdsson, Bernard (Tosun 67’); Richarlison.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Hennessey; Wan-Bissaka, Tomkins, Sakho, Van Aanholt; McArthur (Wickham 89’), Milivojevic, Kouyate, Schlupp; Townsend, Zaha.

    Thoughts on this team?
Have 1 FT & 0 itb. WC still left.

    Patricio Hamer
    Alonso Robbo TAA Doherty Tomkins
    Salah Hazard Maddison Richarlison Fraser
    Kun Mitrovic Quaner

Plan is to save and do a mini WC for gw 11:
    Mitro > Arnie
    TAA > Mendy
    Fraser > 4.4 mid

Only issue is if TAA drops or Mendy rises this week (both possible), will mess up my transfer plans.

    Hi all!
First time this year but feels like an important one:
What transfers would you do: 2FT + 1.0 ITB

    Ryan ( Button )

    Bellerin - Alonso - Walker ( Bennett - WB )

    Hazard - Salah - Maddison - Richarlison ( Guendouzi )

    Agüero - Jiménez - Murray

To be honest I want to get rid of Kun. (playtime)
    Murray & Walker are doubts.
    I want KDB.

    Greetings!

What would be your top 4 City options long term, and how would you rank them?

    Mine:

    1) Mendy
    2) Aguero
    3) Sterling
    4) Laporte

Only have Aguero at the mo! 😯

      1) Aguero
      2) Mendy
      3) KdB
      4) difficult maybe Mahrez or D.Silva

Sterling has contract issues, if new contract not agreed can see his minutes reduced a lot. Also his price over 11 is too much comparing to Mahrez / Silva / Sane.

ok cool, i think so too....i think this week in champs league may answer the question for us, its one of these 2 scenarios:

        - if he doesnt play champs league , he has been dropped and permanently dropped because of the bad game against Napoli and Klopp has decided on his strongest back 4
        - if he does play champs league, Klopp still thinks Taa is in his best back 4 but thought he needed a rest and will be back in the PL team after this week or when no champs league games/

    B) Salah, Richarlison (no City mid/fwd)

Considering going B (with 2FT) this week, and then move to A in the coming weeks. However, it feels a bit weird to waste transfers on having Salah short term. The Mané injury problems is a concern.

Aguero. Are you content to see him play 60-60mins each week and does this render him ineligible for the armband? Would you prefer limited minutes from the spearhead of the City attack which look to be walking the league in yet again, or would you prefer a talisman of a club guaranteed 90 mins in a less attacking or potent outfit (eg Arnie, Mitrovic).

Talking point - All of a sudden the 7m and below midfielders have stopped scoring. Is it time to be patient? Is a change of system required e.g 433 with 3 premium mids and 2 budgets? Who would you still have faith in? Are there any e.g. Gross, Delefeou to keep a look out for over the coming weeks?

      1. Eze Really?
        • 9 Years

I would argue Perreyra, Maddison, Richa, Siggy, Fraser, Wilson, Arnie, King, Mitro, Martial, Schurle are all projected for points returns and expect very little between them all. A stand out will come and will probably helped by fixture difficulty.

Riyad Mahrez - looks more settled now, scored 4 in 6... or still a rotation risk?
Man City - Can we drop Aguero, bring in de Bruyne

      Mine would be Mendy.
Playing for 90 minutes seems he will keep up with Kun over 60 minutes. (Saving 5 mil!!!!!!!!)
Man City the team as Dilva Bilva KDB Sane Sterling Mahrez and even Foden are high stakes rotation risks.
Again, is Mendy the better option?
At this moment in time, I cannot think of a more exciting 6.3 mil prospect.

He lost roughly 1m in ownership the two weeks after his surprise exclusion (6 and 7). Rob, Trip and Doherty were bought by nearly 600k managers those weeks. Im not sure he majority of those selling him wish they could take it back. Especially as many possibly already have bought him back at the price they sold or cheaper.

Player/s: Iheanacho, he has outscored Vardy this season (Vardy RC helped) but does not seem to have attracted much attention. Is he about to become a band wagon, are his minutes too much of a problem.

Team: Spurs - they’ve quietly won 7 of their 9 games, despite players out of form and injury problems. They have an evil next 5 fixtures, but from GW15 their schedule seems the strongest in the league. Are they relevant for FPL yet or wait another few games - Bavies in particular at 5.5 could be too good to be true, if rose injury is long term.

Talking point: Liverpool defence, who (if anyone) to swap TAA to. If lovers is nailed he is getting baps & has goal threat for 4.9. Gomez also seems a Klopp favourite for now. Will Matip also get games, and where does this leave TAA.

Team: Leicester their run of fixtures do look great, many of us have Madison, should we go for a defender if so which one,or maybe attacker

Talking point: Is the holy trinity essential or should we go for only 2 of Alonso,Robbo,Mendy ( if so which one) and get one of maybe cheaper defenders ( Duffy, Leicester defence, yedlin)?

Team: Liverpool - what is going on? Mane out, Firmino rested, TAA dropped, Lovren the man. How do we play their assets?

Aguero. Is he worth the money with 60 minute appearances?
Watford. Great short-term fixtures, good result vs Wolves. Are they the next budget team to invest in?
Getting defensive bargains from good teams - worth getting Lovren, Laporte, Gomez etc. Or is their lack of security not worth investing in.

I think you need to talk about TAA. He's quite well owned and hasn't played 2 in a row now. Ditch or keep? If ditch, who? I think covering the Liverpool defence is essential for our teams, but the nailed options VVD and Robertson are expensive. Is Gomez the answer, or just a sideways move with the same problems?

I’ve come up with a strategy of targeting the weak Cardiff and Fulham defences.
Barring any other concerns with my team, I’m thinking of planning my transfers to make sure I have at least one attacker playing against them every week, starting with Kane > Wilson this.
I feel this a strategy that could reap rewards, but would be interested to know if this is a sound plan or not...

It will undoubtedly reap rewards in that position but if all your FTs are based on 1 game then much of your team may stagnate and rot in the medium to long term

That could well happen, however with the money I’ll be saving with by doing Kane > Wilson I can pretty much pick the strongest attacker from any of the teams that are playing Ful or Car. I’m also not averse to a -4 now and then.
Honestly thinking of trying something a bit different...

Team- man City. Kdb back. Loads of pts in midfield that come with rotation issues.

Re: taking out highest score. Lack of other double figure scores makes the 20 almost an anomaly. Could also make the point that some of those pts scored past the 60 minute mark-a period he doesn't seem to be going past atm.
Owned Kun for only very profitable 6 games last season and used Man City mids a lot and still made top 100.

As I posted yesterday - He’s returned points in 6 of his 9 games, and in the 5 games he’s been earmarked as captain he’s delivered which is important, not sure there are any other players in the game with that type of reliability.Apart from Salah & Haz.

Kun has dovetailed so well with Salah’s captaincy points in GW1, 3, 6 and Haz’s in GW8. I think there’s a lot to be said for having those 3 as captaincy candidates, they’ll all blank from time to time, but they’re delivering when it counts. It’s over to Mo now for GW10/12 & coin flip between Kun/Haz GW11

      Player:
Aguero + De Bruyne + Sterling - does this count as team? idk.
If you're still looking to offload Kane, is Aguero just the obvious go-to answer, or should we look below at Vardy/Lacazette/Arnie/Mitro etc., and then use the funds elsewhere - for example getting in De Bruyne. If you have Aguero do you keep hold of him or look for City cover elsewhere? Similar issues with Sterling - is playing 90 most weeks, then getting rested once in a while better than playing 60 every week? Or time to downgrade to De Bruyne? Is De Bruyne captainable?

      Team:
Leicester is my pick. Amazing fixtures, is a double up worth it? Is Maddison all that? He's had consistent, if not spectacular returns with a bit of luck. Is Vardy more of a risk because of his better fixtures, as he thrives more on the counter. Is Pereira a safe/good option? Chilwell looks promising but underlying stats aren't delivering. Is it worth splashing a bit more on Maguire? Or ignore their defence completely, since they haven't clicked yet? Is Iheanacho a great differential/enabler now he's got himself into the team, with 3 assists and a goal in the last 4?

I guess Liverpool defence might be worth it to discuss, but please don't dwell so long on Salah this week. Every week the same things are said, it just doesn't seem worth it to discuss anymore

      Talking Point:
Similar to my Leicester question, are double ups necessarily bad? I don't see them as bad, and just pick whoever I think will get the most points, but people on here often get advised not to do double ups. I guess for 1 week it's a risk, but longer term is it that bad?

      Talking Point - Cheap Enablers

With premium defs like Robertson & Mendy coming back into the action there is a need for some cheap enablers in attack.

Cardiff, Newcastle, Huddersfield & Watford all have decent run of fixtures.

Is it worth looking at cheap enablers like Murphy, Kenedy, Pritchard & Success as bench fodder and/or occasional starters (“12th man)?

      Player - Mitrovic

Is Fulham's propensity to shoot from outside the box reducing his appeal as an FPL asset?

Fulham have had 120 shots this season (51 in last 4) with 58.3% from outside the box (56.8% last 4)

To compare sides with similar shout counts:

      Everton 123 - 41.5% outside the box (66 last 4 - 43.9% outside the box)

      Southampton - 125 - 46.4% outside the box. (47 last 4 - 48.9% outside the box)

      Wolves 120 - 45.8% outside the box (42 last 4 - 45.2% outside the box)

      Man United 119 - 39.5% outside the box (49 last 4 - 46.9% outside the box)

Should we be looking to move Mitrovic on despite his kind fixtures for the next 2? Priced kindly - can do straight swaps to Arnie / Wilson / King / Murray(!), or downgrade to Ings / Jimenez to free up funds?

Team/players: Man City. Mendy. Should we get him back? Aguero, should we keep, or do we need some attacking City asset for captaincy? Sterling vs. Aguero is still relevant imo, the Sterling benching was an exception rather than the rule, and who says Aguero wont get the odd benching eventually. On the other hand, if Aguero got a brace which he should have, we wouldnt have a conversation about dropping him (which is why this should be discussed)!

Talking point: 4 at the back with Alonso/Mendy/Robertson/Doherty? 5m-ish Liverpool def no-go?

I think Lovren really needs to be discussed. I'm hearing talk of how badly he played and seeing him getting max baps again! Liverpool defence at 4.9 is a dream but only if he's going to stay in the team.

    27. Dr Robotnik

Player: Aguero, is getting reduced minutes every week making it hard to justify his price and captaincy potential? With Lacazette, Arnautovic, Vardy, all looking like decent options, could the money saved be better used on premium defenders?

Team: Liverpool, Is it really worth owning any of their players except Robertson, even with decent fixtures? Salah is being matched by Ryan Fraser for 7.5m less! Sterling is 1.6m less in a free scoring team, and has form. He doesn't get bonus, which is mad for 12.8m. Mane hasn't returned since GW4. Firmino isn't nailed. None of the other defenders are nailed except VVD. Allison only has 2 save points, 1 bonus point, is 1m more than very solid options.

I think the main talking point should be going 5 at the back for maximum value. With Alonso, Robertson, Mendy, Trippier, Doherty, all matching Salah for points for at least half the price, why not play 5 defenders with attacking threat every week? Holebas has great fixtures and is on set pieces, Leicester defenders have goal threat too. You could easily do this AND have Salah, Aguero, Hazard, with Jimenez or Wilson and two of Maddison/Richarlison/Fraser, and a decent bench. I almost wish I could play 6 at the back right now.

I'd be interested to hear you talk about Mendy and how much we should prioritise him in our transfer plans. He is clearly an outstanding player, but Liverpool and Chelsea both have superior fixtures to City in the medium term. I know we 'should' have him and he is undoubtedly quality, but can we get away without him for the next 3 GWs when he faces tot SOU MUN? Or am I playing with fire by avoiding?

The other player I'm thinking about is Aguero - great pick, but should we be re-investing money elsewhere? After all there are loads of great mid-priced strikers about, which frees up cash for premium defence and midfield...

1, Mendy - great fixtures and nailed at 4.5 mill
2, Cardiff - have they turned a corner and are now great budget options
3, weak benches that quite a few of the Scouts have and the hits they keep taking to just about get 11 players on the pitch

Player: Richarlison is playing up front effecting his output?
Teams: Leicester and West Ham great fixtures but which assets?
Taking point: Is a double Liverpool and Man city defence the way to go? Normally i'm not a fan of double defence but both clubs have 6 clean sheets in 9 matches. Leaving a back line something like Ederson, Mendy, Robertson, (TAA/Gomez/Lovern/VVD), a wolves defender and AWB. Also which other Liverpool defender othen then Robertson is the best choice? VVD most nailed, but which of the 3 cheaper Liverpool defenders is next best? Gomez,TAA, Lovern?

Talking point... Premium Defender Truffle Shuffle

Premium defenders (and probably a four-at-the-back formation) are looking like a smart move again. But it's more complicated than in week 3. Doherty is a clear pick, but now we have Mendy back and firing, TAA sadly benched twice in a row (leading us back to Robertson), and while Alonso has been quiet lately he has good looking fixtures ahead.

Looking at the form and/or fixtures, seems we'd like all three of the "RAM" defenders (Robertson/Alonso/Mendy) but it's not so easy to fit them in as they cost a collective 1.1M more than they did in GW2!

Intriguingly, each one has a cheaper alternative: Alexander-Arnold, Rudiger, and Laporte. TAA's benchings should make us look more at the other two, right? Are Rudiger or Laporte sufficient to cover for their pricier teammates? Both are steady and non-explosive, but still rack up the points for half a million to a million less than Alonso or Mendy.

So to the Scoutcast talking point questions:
      - Do we believe four at the back and these three pricey defenders are the way to go?
      - If we can't affort R+A+M, should we do Robbo + Alonso + Laporte... or Robbo + Rudiger + Mendy?
      - Or do we make room for all three big hitters and downgrade the third mid or third striker? Who to downgrade? (Interesting formation questions then at 4-4-2 vs. 4-3-3.)
      - And am I being to harsh by leaving out Trippier? Respect for his strong returns so far (more points than Kane!)... but Spurs fixtures are turning grim and with Eriksen coming back that means fewer free kicks and corners.

Suspect others have asked on the thread but TAA a popular topic & notice Joe has already said "he has to go". I think I'm inclined to wait for Cardiff. I suspect he'll play but it's undoubted that the Liverpool backline will rotate again. Personally, I suspect only VVD and Allison are 100% nailed.

Quite fancy Pereya, Delofeu or (of course) Maddison for the next 3 certainly.

He's out when I decide to go for KdB. Keeping Maddison over him.

For now, yes. Maybe he will get booted back out to the wing if Silva thinks it's not working?

  15. Eze Really?

Hennessy Moura Kane to Fab Salah (C) Arnie. -8
    All should be long term.
Only doubt is concerns over Haz back injury.

      Hennessey to Fabianski isn't worth a -4

I have Hamer and have you seebn Hennessy fixtures? I would not do it for short term.

Thoughts on this team? Wildcard still available. 2FT, 0.3itb

    Ederson Hamer
    Robertson, Luiz, Doherty, Kabasele, Wan-Bissaka
    Salah, Mane, Fraser, Neves, Stephens
    Kane, Vardy, Mitrovic

    Current plan:

    Neves+Kane -> Hazard+Wilson

Considering Gray (WAT) aswell. Was he knocked or why was he benched vs. WOL?

Please could someone explain price locks?
KDB went 0 to 75% on October 5th (so presumably unlocked 7 days from there) but surely 100% + 7 days is a more logical?

KDB went to 100% available on 19/10/18 so, in my mind he should be price locked until 16/10/18? Not 7 days from him going to 75% chance of playing

A few scouting reports needed if possible....

    1. Watford. Who was the big threat at the weekend and indeed going forward?

    2. Also, Newcastle. I have Kenedy and I'd planned to use him to cover the two difficult Wolves fixtures (BOU/WAT vs TOT/Ars). Is that a horrible plan?

    thoughts on these moves?

Alsono, Richo & Ings > Mendy, Fernandinho, Arnie

    2fts so it would be for a - 4

    Worth a punt I think!

I wouldn't bring in Fernandinho, he wont score a bullet every week

I'm looking at Ings to Arnie this week but I do have 2.5 in the bank

If Mané is declared fit for the weekend:
    A) Mané, KdB
    B) Salah, Richarlison (no City mid/fwd)

I dont think Mane will play this weekend, they dont really need him vs Cardiff at home. He may play Champions League but then rested with that broken hand injury

2nd and 3rd in my ML have both taken a hit before he end of the GW and CL/Europa. Playing with fire, especially with the Hazard issue. TV becoming a little less important now imo
