Palace denied clean sheet late on as Pickford top-scores in Everton win

Our latest set of Scout Notes from Gameweek 9 focuses on the only Premier League fixture to have been contested on Sunday.

Everton’s match against Crystal Palace appeared to have been heading for a goalless draw before late strikes from substitutes Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun, leaving those with the most-owned outfielders on show at Goodison Park with little to take away from the encounter.

Fantasy managers who were hoping for a sizeable haul from the likes of Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott, Wilfried Zaha and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to salvage a fairly underwhelming Gameweek were left disappointed as Jordan Pickford emerged from the Toffees’ 2-0 win with the joint-highest score of this weekend thanks to his penalty save from Luka Milivojevic.

Not one of the four players involved in Everton’s four goals were owned by more than 2.3% of Fantasy managers, meanwhile.

We round up the goals, assists, Fantasy talking points and manager quotes from the penultimate match of Gameweek 9.

Everton 2-0 Crystal Palace

  • Goals: Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m), Cenk Tosun (£6.7m)
  • Assists: Ademola Lookman (£5.1m), Michael Keane (£4.9m)

When Richarlison (£6.9m) scored after seven minutes of his first run-out as an Everton striker in the Toffees’ 2-1 win over Leicester City in Gameweek 8, there was much hope for the 25.7% of us who own the Brazilian.

In the 173 minutes of action that Richarlison has played since then, he has had only one attempt on goal – that being a header over from a Lucas Digne (£4.8m) corner-kick in the first half of the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.

Anyone watching Sunday’s victory over the Eagles would have surely reached a similar conclusion: that the outwardly positive move “out of position” to attack appears to the detriment of Richarlison’s goal threat.

Eden Hazard (£11.4m) has run into similarly underwhelming form when moved to a “false nine” position in the past and it seems, admittedly on the evidence of just two matches there, that Richarlison also presents much more of an attacking menace when running at opposition defences rather than playing with his back to them.

Richarlison’s inclusion as the spearhead of the Everton attack was again to accommodate Bernard (£5.9m) on the left flank, though the latter of the two turned in a particularly ineffectual display and Everton’s two goals came after his withdrawal and Richarlison was shunted back out to the wing.

Bernard had turned in an excellent performance at Leicester, of course, so it remains to be seen whether Marco Silva perseveres with the pint-sized Brazilian on the left wing and his countryman up top for the trip to Manchester United next weekend. It may be, indeed, that Richarlison is more suited to the striker’s role when playing away from home against a “bigger” side, given the damage he could potentially wreak on the counter-attack.

As it was at Goodison, though, there was little to cheer for the two Brazilians or Theo Walcott (£6.5m). The trio had only two shots on goal between them, with Walcott wasting the best chance of all when played through on goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson (£7.4m).

Bernard should have squared for the unmarked Walcott just after the hour mark in what was to be his final major act, with Everton’s subsequent substitutions turning the game.

Ademola Lookman (£5.1m) crossed for fellow substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin (£5.3m) to open the scoring on 86 minutes, before Bernard’s replacement, Cenk Tosun (£6.7m), latched onto Michael Keane‘s (£4.9m) hoofed clearance-turned-pass to put the match beyond Palace two minutes later.

Silva hailed his squad depth at full-time:

I’m really happy for them. Cenk has come on in the last two home games and scored two important goals, for us and for him as well.

I was pleased for Dominic and Lookman because they created the first goal and are working really hard as well to get into the starting XI.

It’s important for us, now we have solutions on the bench to solve some problems during the match.

Sigurdsson was the pick of Everton’s starting front four, supplying that excellent chance for Walcott and having five attempts on his own – the most any player at Goodison recorded.

As usual, most of his efforts were from outside the box, with the pick of those attempts from distance being a shot that whistled just wide of Wayne Hennessey‘s (£4.6m) left-hand post.

The Icelandic midfielder’s only effort from inside the Palace area drew a smart stop from Hennessey in the first half, meanwhile.

Aside from Silva’s substitutions, the game’s turning point came on 60 minutes. After the fit-again Seamus Coleman (£5.2m) had felled Wilfried Zaha (£6.9m) in the Everton box, Luka Milivojevic (£6.1m) was given the opportunity to register his first attacking return of the season from 12 yards.

So dependable from the spot in 2017/18, Milivojevic could only find the trailing leg of Jordan Pickford (£5.9m) this time and with that glorious chance went Palace’s last real opportunity of the match.

His manager, Roy Hodgson, backed the Serbian midfielder to bounce back and take Palace’s next penalty, with no suggestion that someone like Zaha would oust Milivojevic from spot-kick duties:

The fact is you have to take your chances and we came across a goalkeeper in form who made two outstanding saves in the first half which meant we came in at half-time 0-0, and we had the penalty which would have made a difference. It definitely lifted the crowd and they really got behind the team and gave them fresh impetus going forward.

Luka has only missed two penalties out of around nine or 10 so I’m sure he’ll score the next one, and I’m sure we’ll get penalties and opportunities because we do send people forward into the opposing team’s box.

Hodgson’s side arguably had the better of the match in the first half and most certainly had the biggest chances: James Tomkins (£4.4m) demonstrating his aerial threat by firstly heading Andros Townsend‘s (£5.8m) cross narrowly wide and then nodding on for Cheikhou Kouyate (£4.8m) to strike the Everton woodwork.

Zaha – passed fit after the recurrence of an adductor injury – and Townsend were paired up front in a 4-4-2, with Jeffrey Schlupp (£4.5m) and James McArthur (£4.8m) taking up the “wide” roles either side of Milivojevic and Kouyate.

Zaha and Townsend didn’t have a great deal of joy up front (registering only one shot each), but Zaha’s trickery did cause problems for Coleman in particular – culminating in that aforementioned penalty award.

Hodgson paid tribute to his strike duo after the match:

I think it went well and both played well. They caused problems and did their work defensively as well which helped the team, so I think they’ve got to be very satisfied with their day’s work.

We do have other alternatives. Sorloth was sick, as was Max Meyer, so there’s a couple of players there who I’m sure will be available for the next game, and Connor Wickham after two years at least got onto the field of play; albeit with three or four minutes left and he was unlikely to be able to perform any miracles.

Palace’s stand-out players were perhaps at the back, with Tomkins and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (£4.3m) particularly impressive and in the mix for bonus points prior to those two late strikes. That Bernard and then Richarlison were so impotent down the Everton left was a testament to Wan-Bissaka’s defensive work.

With Palace facing “big six” sides in the next four Gameweeks, Wan-Bissaka will likely be sitting on countless benches between now and the beginning of December but many will rightly be keeping hold of this budget gem for when the Eagles’ fixtures turn for the better in Gameweek 14.

Connor Wickham (£4.9m) returned for the visitors as a late substitute after almost two years out, while Yerry Mina (£5.4m) was on the bench for Everton on his own return from injury.

Max Meyer (£5.7m) and Alexander Sorloth (£4.9m), meanwhile, missed out with illness for Palace.

Andre Gomes (£5.4m) made his Everton debut in the double pivot and Silva was positive about the on-loan Portuguese midfielder, who is unlikely to be coveted by many FPL managers going forward:

He did well, like we expected. He is working really hard and well. He is a player who can give us different things in that zone.

I am happy with Tom Davies and his performances as well. I knew and I expected a tough game this afternoon and we needed Andre to control the ball and give different solutions for us in some moments. He is a little bit of a different profile from Tom.

Everton XI (4-2-3-1): Pickford; Coleman, Keane, Zouma, Digne; Gueye, Gomes (Calvert-Lewin 82’); Walcott (Lookman 82’), Sigurdsson, Bernard (Tosun 67’); Richarlison.

Crystal Palace XI (4-4-2): Hennessey; Wan-Bissaka, Tomkins, Sakho, Van Aanholt; McArthur (Wickham 89’), Milivojevic, Kouyate, Schlupp; Townsend, Zaha.

    Lovren or Holebas?

    Need to pick one and:

    Dump Shaw or TAA?

Watched match of the day earlier and Gomez was so good, there’s no way TAA is ousting him IMO.

TAA to Lovren May seem sideways, but makes sense and think il do the same.

      You doing it for free?

Was going to do Trippier > TAA this GW but he's not safe anymore...who would you get instead of Trippier:
    A) Gomez
    B) Lovren
    C) Mendy (would have to lose Alonso to get him otherwise)
    D) Keep Trippier

Any insight on TAA at Liverpool please... should I do a straight swap for Gomez?

Looks like he’s been dropped completely?

wait and see to this Champs league game....

      - if he doesnt play champs league , he has been dropped and permanently dropped because of the bad game against Napoli and Klopp has decided on his strongest back 4
      - if he does play champs league, Klopp still thinks Taa is in his best back 4 but thought he needed a rest and will be back in the PL team after this week or when no champs league games/

Gameweek 9 Rough with the Smooth

Although we still have one game remaining,

Feel free to post your tales of joy and woe from Gameweek 9 here:

Smooth: Kept Pickford since GW1 (With Stekelenburg as backup) - stuck with him for 8 GW's with only 1 CS to date. Penalty save plus maximum bonus! Boom! Green Arrow from 500k to 200k (https://fantasy.premierleague.com/a/entry/412758/history)

Rough: I guess Arnautovic's one point.

Lamela crushing the joy out of my GW...inevitable.

Happy with his replacement, Mo's goal at least.

      Jimenez 59-minute-blankety-blank a worry.

      10-pointer from Mendy was enjoyable.

      Mostly all woe.

Double wolves fail, TAA and Knockaert fail. A week to forget. Need Vardy to bag a few tonight.

My first run-out of the 'TRAM' was successful.

      Trippier 6
      Robertson 8
      Alonso 1
      Mendy 10

Contemplating the TRAM going forward as well, at the moment I'd prefer any of them to their similarly price midfield counterparts. How long are you thinking of keeping?

          Indefinitely.

As long as you have a decent bench, rotation shouldn't be too much of an issue and you can still put out a decent 4-3-3 or 4-4-2

Hold on, some of us Sterling cappers haven't even had their captains play yet!

      In the meantime:

Rough - TAA; Doherty; Sterling; Jimenez; Ings; Bennett brought in on wildcard. They scored less than a point each for me. I get Madison's points instead of Sterling's so let's see what happens tonight.

Smooth - decided to bring Mendy in at the last minute, and I brought in Keane for his commanding aerial threat. He was pretty hopeless in front of goal to be honest but he got that all-important jammy assist, a clean sheet (thank you Mili!) and two bonus. A goal from Lacazette and this gameweek won't be a complete write-off.

Rough: Wildcarding for 36 points with just Vardy to come.

Sterling captaincy fail, vice captained Hazard over Salah due to Salah flag, turned out Hazard played the whole game flagged with his back injury.....typical. TAA didn't turn up so missed out on the liverpool clean sheet - AWB came in which was looking ok until the 87th minute yesterday. Wolves double up at the back immediately failed. Wilson and Fraser failing against a dreadful Southampton side. Ings off my bench failed.

smooth- Wildcarding Mendy back in saw immediate dividends. Salah goal welcome but no surprise to see him drop out the bonus. Probably the best part about the wildcard was seeing Josh Murphy bag me a goal. When the best part about a wildcard is your 4.8m 5th mid scoring 7 points you know its been a shocker!

Rough – Doherty, Alonso, Hazard, Wilson. Selling Trippier to free up funds to bring in Sterling for Mane.

Smooth – Kun (c), Begovic, Robertson, Dilva.

50 points all out, but looking at rivals I had a good week.

Rough: Transferred Trippier out for TAA (terrible Saturday morning rushed transfer), so missed clean sheet from spurs and liv. AWB coming in off the bench after I thought he had the CS in the bag! Now priced out of getting Mendy which was the plan all along for Tripps.
Zaha assist stolen by Pickford save.

Smooth: Reliable Robertson, Surprising Schurrle (2 in a row!)

49 points and a green arrow inside the top 5k!

Finished on 44 points & just about climbed 80k into the top 500k.

Rough has been my third defender squad spot, started as Coleman, transferred to Holebas after GW4 & to Trent after GW8 to give me scores of:

      1,2,1,2*,0,1,(1),-1, 0
      -benched GW7

      GW8 played Holebas (-1) over Fraser (6) & Robertson (6).

6 points over 8 weeks, net 0 points since GW5, dreadful.

Rough - Hazard and Wilson blanks.

Smooth - Robertson, Mendy, Salah(c) Aguero, Mitrovic all returned, leaving 51... with TAA starting, Dunks 8 pointer coming in off the bench leaving 59, with Ramsey to play, could hit 70 if Rambo hauls tonight!

Awful week for me. 36 points all done. TAA and Knockhaert both benched, meant Bissaka came in who lost his clean sheet near the end for a solid 1 point.

Only smooth point was the fact everyone else seemed to have a bad week. Overall Rank has gone from 4k to 7k. I expected a lot lot worse.

Rough: Did Foster to Patricio as one of 2FT for double Wolves defence. 5 of my starting 11 registered only 1 point. Aguero's minutes managed again not ideal either. Have Maddison as a non playing first sub so will be rough if he hauls.

Smooth: Used 2FT to swap Trippier and Zaha out for Mendy and Mitrovic. Also had Kun (C), Salah and Robbo so 52 points, Green arrow and moved from 20k to 12k.

Rough: Wildcarded and few of my players have been dropped this week with Knockaert, Sterling, Alexander Arnold not showing up.
35 + La(c)a to go is actually a rough on my pre-wildcard team which would have been 43 + Auba & Ramsey points to go. Still happy with my setup and hopefully will not see a ranking drop.

      Rough week

      Chose sterling over Salah
      Had TAA no show
Had Hennessy and AWB single pointers
      Hazard single pointer
      Doherty single pointer

37 points with lacazette and Maddison to come

Only smooth(ish) - Alonso out for Robertson (for a hit) so 1 point up on the deal.

Possibly smooth - Kane for lacazette so let’s see how that goes

Rough... Going TAA and Sterling on WC. Correctly predicted these could be in for huge points, frustrating watching their teams do well.

I did have Duffy as my sub defender before changing to Yedlin which was an additional blow

Rough: Brought in TAA and he got benched. Was going to hedge my bet with Foster and AWB if I didn't bring him in, but decided to play Hennessey once I benched AWB for TAA. 12 points turned into 2 very late in the Palace game.

Smooth: Captained Salah. Silva and Mendy paid off the patience invested in them. Silva ended up with an assist in a situation where Agüero (non owner) should've likely had a penalty, but the play went on and an offside placed Silva rolled a ball from out of bounds into the feet of Bernardo Silva during the confusion that arose.

Used my 2 FT to move Fernandino & Wan-Bissakka -> Hojbjerg & TAA.
I really felt a second LIV defensive asset would be a good move. Unfortunately he didn't play and Fernandino got 14 points. Ended up costing me 11 points.

      Smooth -

      12 points from Ozil 🙂
14 points from the rest of the team 🙁

      Rough:

I bought TAA after the deadline on the Friday 5 Oct (before he was benched for his GW8 game) to catch the prise rise so I wouldn't be priced out of my preferred move for both KDB and Mane. TAA didn't play, and Yedlin came off the bench with only 2pts at home to Brighton.

I was put off the Mane, so changed plan by selling Pogba for Sterling and giving him the captain's armband. Sterling didn't play and I got Arnautovic's 1pt off the bench.

I spent from Saturday to Monday evening in FPL Discovery's Hall of Shame as the lowest scorer inside the top 10k with only 4pts in my starting XI, dropping from 5k to 44k.

After the long wait, I was excited for Monday Night Football, with 3 Arsenal attackers in my team along with Vardy for a game that promised goals to save my gameweek. Vardy was denied a penalty early on, and did nothing else until he shat himself. Ramsey started on the bench and brought home a single appearance point. The game was immensely frustrating as a Lacazette owner, as he had plenty of quality chances, which on another day could have seen him haul. The frustration was heightened by the fact he had taken over capaincy of my team from Sterling, as well as by Aubameyang stealing the limelight with 2 goals from the bench (this is already my third time owning an Arsenal striker this season, and it's certainly been a rollercoaster).

      Smooth:

I was very close to selling Ozil for Sterling instead of Pogba, but luckily I was on the right side of that decision as Ozil delivered a goal, an assist and 2 bonus points, bringing my GR up a more respectible 5,497,740. I'm delighted to find that, despite only making it to 26pts, my team has only dropped to 17k and not looking too bad for the following week.

Smooth: coming back out of a ~25 point free-hit swing, and getting my old team with the likes of Robertson, Salah, Pereyra, D.Silva, Agüero and Mitrovich on form. Happy with 57 points there given I would probably have had some players like Holebas, Lacazette, Ramsey, Kane or Hazard in for this round if I'd not gone that route..

Mostly rough. Add me to the list of people who chose to transfer in Stering (for a hit) instead of Salah. Have already shuffled to get Salah back in for Cardiff.

Also, just not a lot of the usual scorers did much scoring (1 assist in total from Hazard, Mitrovic, Wilson, Richalison, Fraser). And my defense combined for three points from Alonso, Doherty and TAA (Wan-Bisaka sub).

      Forgettable week all around.

Never liked Ings even though lucky enough to own hm for the 2 games where he actually scored (swapped for Wilson few weeks back so good move there).

As a Robbo owner, much prefer him to TAA.

Not really convinced by Laca either but then again not see Arsenal at all this season so get opinion from someone who has see him play this season. He is good price and quite nailed playing for decent team who score goals.

I was from the group who took a hit Mane to Sterling before this GW.

Wondering what do now... but actually the fixtures for Sterling arent so bad

Sterling: Spurs away Shampton and United Home

    Salah: Cardif H Arsenal A Fulham H

The only downside is probably that I wont C Sterling as Aguero is the favourite everytime.

The hidden advantage is that If Hazard is my C vs Burnley he could well score more than Salah...

Is the best Defender in the world an option ?.
Lovren 4.9 with back to back clean sheets and 3 Bonus points after coming back in. Currently have TAA and consecutive benches is annoying when a clean sheet against Huddersfield was more or less guaranteed.

He was foolish to remove Pickford before home game against Palace so no sympathy there.

Unlucky with Sess as he hadn't always played but they were playing the worst team in the league so again lack of sympathy.

Sterling always rotation risk with their plethora of MF's and with big match against spurs plus Champs league, again that was on the cards.

I have Kane through my stupidity 2 weeks ago and I see value in Vardy, Arsenal and Arnie. Maybe Vardy as no Maddison.

Pereyra - Not seen a lot of Watford at all, worth the switch from Rich?

Felipe Anderson - Potential differential with West Hams decent run of fixtures?

Was just about to ask about him, looked good on highlights, great price and good set of next few games. Is he on any set pieces or anything?

      1. Eze Really?

I am looking at him as I have Maddison. Reliable points getter always if fit.

I'm tempted by Felipe Anderson but probably going with Arnie instead.

May go with Pereyra, he seems the main man for Watford. Arnie is for West Ham & he just doesn't fit into my team unfortunately

Does anyone know the best way to contact FPL to ask about why an assist wasn't given? Basically want to ask about why Gunnarsson didn't receive the assist for Reid's goal as it clearly came off of him.

    1. Eze Really?

      Did he assist or deflect?

Deflect for sure. But they are given week in week out in fantasy football

As far as I know there has to be some intention. I could be wrong though. Assists I have always struggled with.

yeah fair enough, I think if intention is the definition then definitely shouldn't get it. I thought it was just alter the direction, but could well be wrong

Rules state it could be intentional or unintentional. Defo the latter, and would have been a tenuous assist, but it looked like as assist from where I was sitting (in a Gunnarsson arm chair!)

              Go to 'Rules' tab: 'Scoring'>'Assists'

A touch isn't enough, it must 'significantly alter the path of the ball' to be considered an assist nowadays, I think.

true, think it changed the direction completely though. But think that description is true, thanks.

    Play one

    A. Højbjerg
    B. Kante
    C. Bennett (doubling up with Doherty)

    D. Kante + Mitrovic > Pereya + Jiminez? for - 4

    Or transfer one to who?

Is Knockaert out of favour? Or why was he benched this GW?

Anyone else considering Deulofeu at 5.4? Playing up front now for Watford as he returns from injury. Looks like good value for money

Already regretting buying Kane 2 GWs ago.... I'm on 26 points with only Maddison to play... awful.

    Should I sell him ??

    Foster (Stekelenburg)

    Walker, Alonso, Wan-B, Alex.Arnold, (Peltier)

    Hazard, Richarlison, Maddison, Knockaert, (Fraser)

    Aguero, Kane, (King)

I have 2 FTs and am seriously considering selling Kane, swapping Walker OUT - Mendy IN, and going for Aubameyang....

Well, yes you should seriously consider selling kane lol. 12.5 bag of useless. Would rather have jiminez and cash then Kane ATM.
      I have Kane myself.

Thanks guys, i've gone for it, sold Kane, and brought in Laca, and done the Wan-B->Mendy move.

        Team already looks better, and going for 3-4-3 formation for this GW;

        Foster (Stekelenburg)

Mendy, Alonso, Alex.Arnold (Peltier) (Walker *injured*)

        Hazard, Richarlison, Maddison, Fraser (Knockaert)

        Aguero, Lacazette, King
