FPL Question Time – Liverpool defenders and best time to sell Alonso

Fantasy Premier League Question Time is back following the return of top flight football in Gameweek 9.

As ever, the FPL community is brimming with questions, which we have put to our latest panel of pundits.

Read on to find out what they think about the best way to cover Liverpool’s defence, whether it’s time to sell Marcos Alonso and how to build the most effective forward line.

Who’s on the panel this week?

FPL General – aka Mark McGettigan, who has three finishes inside the top 400 in the last four seasons and who has a huge following on Twitter. Mark has also appeared on the official FPL Show this season.

Who Got the Assist? – Tom and Nick run one of Twitter’s most active Fantasy accounts and run their very own blog, also producing an excellent regular podcast.

Holly Shand – aka FPL Holly, founder of the popular Fantasy Football Community Twitter account and website and another who has appeared on the official FPL Show in recent months.

Question 1 – General

Is Robertson the only Liverpool defender worth investing in? Should we avoid all others?

“The Liverpool defence is a bit of a minefield right now. Alexander-Arnold, Gomez and Lovren are competing for two places, not to forget Joel Matip as well.

“That’s enough for me to avoid these players in FPL.

“I’ve got Robertson as he’s the safe bet. Van Dijk looks secure as well if you are willing to fork out £5.9m for a centre-back who has zero attacking returns this season.

“If I was going for a Liverpool defensive double-up, it would be the Scottish Roberto Carlos and goalkeeper Alisson.”

Question 2 – Who Got the Assist?

With Alonso’s points drying up and Mendy proving again threatening, should we make the switch now? Or because Chelsea have easier fixtures comparing to City in the next three should we wait after GW 12 to make the change?

“I can see why a lot of people are eyeing the price of Alonso and thinking he could function as a cash cow.

“As we got a hint of with his headed goal this week, you’ve now also got his team mate Rudiger second for goal attempts, just three behind the Spaniard.

“To his credit, Alonso is still getting in the right positions to register attacking returns.

“But the crucial element for me is his ownership. Nearly 50% of managers have him in their squads.

“Chelsea have Burnley Crystal Palace and Everton before the next international break, which on paper is better than what City have.

“Anything in those winnable games and it’s a bona fide rank killer. Other managers may be braver, but I’m not selling until injury forces my hand.”

Question 3 – Holly

Is it too risky to go with three cheaper strikers with none of the big strikers in good form (aside from Aguero) or should team structure still take priority?

“Aguero, Aubameyang and Lacazette are leading the way for premium strikers, and I expect that trend to continue.

“For this reason, I’d say you need at least one expensive striker or maybe even two, with Aguero and Lacazette the pick of the options.

“Bournemouth have provided great value in the cheap striker slot, but as their schedule stiffens, a move for Arnautovic might be wise.

“Mitrovic, Jimenez and Ings are all lacking consistency right now.”

Question 4 – General

While I’m looking to protect my overall rank somewhat. I’m also looking for a differential or two. Who does the panel see making a difference, away from the norm over the next three Gameweeks?

“I’ve had a look at my Watchlist and picked out three differentials who I think could score well over the next three Gameweeks.

“Ben Chilwell (0.8% ownership) impressed me on Monday night against Arsenal. He picked up his first assist of the season, bombing forward from left back for Leicester. He faces West Ham (h), Cardiff (a) and Burnley (h) next.

“Newcastle need to turn things around quickly after a very poor start to the season. Their fixtures are great between now and Boxing Day (they don’t face any of the ‘Big Six’ until then) which could see an upturn in form. Kenedy (1.2% ownership) is the one I’m interested in.

“Jamie Vardy (4.9%) was very quiet against Arsenal, possibly due to illness. Interest in him will be low after two blanks but I can see him back amongst the goals over the next three Gameweeks.”

Question 5 – Holly

Do you view the Wolves defeat as a reality check or an anomaly against a Watford side with a point to prove? How should that affect our utilisation of our Wolves defensive assets over the tricky run of fixtures in the coming Gameweeks?

“Those managers who jumped on the Wolves defence have been fortunate so far, as defensive stability coincided with great fixtures.

“According to expected goals conceded, Wolves are third best in the league, behind Liverpool and Manchester City.

“We must remember that they are a promoted team though.

“Their defence still contains value options, with Rui Patricio a set and forget keeper option, who should do well for save points over the difficult period.

“Doherty is still a great third or fourth defender and Bennett a great bench filler with his 4.2m price.

“It might be time to abandon a starting double or triple up, but still worth carrying one or two in your squad long-term.

“It’s these players that can enable us to afford the popular premium options of Mendy, Robertson and Alonso.”

    How this for a hit?

Kane, Richarlison, TAA to Salah, Robbo, Ings ( just enough cash). It would give me...

    Patricio Hart
    RAM Doherty AWB
    Salah Hazard Maddison Fraser Hojbjerg
    Aguero Mitrovic Ings

    Good move?
I could postpone the Robbo move and do others for free....but priced out if Robbo increases or TAA drops by 0.2

Robbo for Mendy. Your strikers need up or downgrading. You clearly play 5 mids so that leaves 3 at the back which you are proposing are all premiums.
So that means you are resting Jimenez or Docherty every game so what's the point of wasting 1m on your bench with Jimenez?
      I'd downgrade someoa d upgrade

    Bottomed

    Ederson, Hamer
    Mendy, Robertson, Duffy, Tomkins, Wan-Bis
    Haz, Maddison, Rich, Knockaert, Gendouzi
    Kun, Kane, Mitro

I am 0.3m short for Kane & Knockaert to Arnie and Salah (2ft)

    Do I:

    A) look at downgrading Rich instead of Knockaert?
    B) downgrade Ederson for Ryan/Patricio/Fab (-4)
    C) get King/Ings instead of Arnie

I'm on B currently but it goes against my grain to take a hit for a keeper!

          Ya good team.
But Mane is out of sorts lately and KDB a bit rusty. So I would rather have Salah(C) and 6.5 mid for now and make the Kdb and Mane switch later.

If you can somehow get Balbuena instead of AWB for rotation with Doherty, that would be good. Very nice team and I think KDB has shown enough to merit his inclusion.

Cheers aware of this rotation, good shout. Would mean Arnie to Mitro though, and like to plan WC for longer term. Shürrle over Richo alternatively.

Yeah Arnie is a keeper. Well then there's the option of Diop although I don't rate him as highly. Alternatively since you're on WC, there's a chance that Stephens finally drops to 4.3. Either way it's not make or break.

Next GW I can afford to bring in only one of Mendy (for Yedlin) or Arnie (for Ings). Which is more essential for the immediate future? Would likely have to wait until GW 13 or 14 for the other.

Would appreciate opinions on whether to take this 4 point hit.
      Team is
      Ederson (Hamer)
      Mendy, Robbo, Trippier, T.AA. A.W.B
      Mane,Hazard, Maddison,Fraser (Guendouzi)
      Aguero, Lacazette, Jimenez
      Have 1FT and 0.6 itb

Thinking of Mané/Tripp to Salah(capt) and Duffy with 0.1
Pros: Salah better capt than Ken this week ina week when otherwise very reliant on City keeping clean sheet, and Mané a falling star currently.
Cons having gone all season without Salah, is he too much dosh to tie up.
Any other options would be appreciated

I'm pro-Salah because the big scores are going to happen sooner rather than later. I feel your midfield is underdone.

This, risky to bin Salah (as bad as his finishing has been) plus, midfield is slowly starting to require more funds and something has to give. Salah Hazard (KDB) Ozil in form.

Played last 4 games so why would he be? OOP as well. Presumably his favourable fixtures is one of the reasons why you picked him so you wouldn't want to bench him for this fixture.
If he is benched or rotted, you have the auto-sub to come in.

Southampton at home in the League or Donetsk at home three days later?

Asking because the plan os for me to bring back Mendy for SOU (H), and have a feeling he could get the odd rest for that game

Mendy was bought to the club by Pep to play that specific role. TAA was always questionably 2nd choice

Yeah ok but Delph deputised ok last season and Guardiola trusts him as a back-up. He will play from time to time, even if not that often

        To elaborate a bit -

        He started vs Pool
        He started vs Burnley
        He started yesterday
        He will start vs Spurs
He will prob get a rest vs FUL in League Cup
        ...
Next two after that are SOU (H) followed by Shakhtar three days later. Could he start both?

Owner. Agree on FUL rest. SHAK or SOU, however, is anybody’s guess. Doubt he plays both.

But if he misses FUL and SOU, that’s two rests in a row. Isnt it slightly more likely he wont start vs SHAK?

Ok thanks. Plan is to get Arnie for Ings spot. I can also do Moura to Fraser (not as much as a captaincy shout tho). Wouldn’t captain Wilson over Hazard or Mane anyway.

      Begovic (Hamer)
      Doherty Alonso Robertson (W-B, Bennet)
      Dilva, Richarlison, Maddison, Hazard (Billing)
      Aguero Wilson Kane

      1) I am planning to do a hit to get Salah, Kane will be out and Arnautovic in. Who to get rid? Silva or Richarlison? Is David Silva going to be rested?
2)If I am not get rid of Silva out, I want to upgrade Bennet, who to get from defenders I will have 5.3m, I m thinking either Perreira or Chillwell

        Good transfers.
Rich's stats put me off him and Silva is always going to be prone to rot. Perhaps it needs to be Silva because of his higher cost and with Rich you know he starts each week.

Who would you downgrade to fund Mendy?

richarlison probably. But why do u need Medny, City's fixtures are not that perfect, and he is probably going to be rested soon. I would keep all those players above. Richarlison is a concern, but his home fixtures are good, he can get double digits there. Forget about Mendy for now, get Robertson if you dont have him

There's no evidence Mendy will suffer any rotation significant enough to dent his value

Mendy is averaging almost 8 points per game. That's what 13m Salah owners are going he steps up to. Coincidently, the only reason Mendy isn't clearly essential is because his injury and Salah owners ruining their teams for the sake of ownership.

Mendy is THE player in the game

I think City will beat Spurs comfortably, but not sure on KDB... With so many attacking options KDB will most likely play a little deeper and assist the assister...

      Is salah essential?

      This is my team:

      Ederson (Hamer)

      Alonso, Robbo, Doherty, Cook, AWB
      Hazard, Moura, Fraser, Rich, Obiang
      Kun, Kane, Wilson

or do you have any suggestion?
